Tips for Homeschooling Math
Use More than One Math Program
While it might seem like math overload to use multiple programs, I find the variation in teaching methods and presentations to be helpful in building math understanding in my kids. A common weakness I find with teaching my own kids is that I present lessons in a way that fits MY understanding, but that doesn’t always mean it fits their learning style.
Using more than one math program gives the advantage of presenting lessons in different styles. So if presenting a concept one way doesn’t stick, you can easily present it another way.
Free Math Tutorials
The internet is full of so many helpful resources, including free math tutorials. This is a big advantage we have in homeschooling compared to when I was homeschooled in the ‘90s. I find math tutorials helpful for me as the teacher when I just need a refresher on certain concepts. My kids like that they can watch the tutorials and figure things out on their own, without waiting for me.
No matter which curriculum you use for math, take advantage of free online tutorials. Especially if you are not a mathy person.
Online Math Programs for Homeschool
There are so many more resources available now than there were when I was homeschooled. The variety of options available for math programs online are seemingly endless. You can choose between classes that are live online, where your kids follow a classroom schedule and actually attend class. The advantage of live online classes is that kids often have more opportunities to interact with a teacher, and it also gives them another person to be accountable to.
The other option, and the one I prefer, is self-paced online math classes. With self-paced classes you maintain your homeschool flexibility and autonomy while still getting to outsource instruction. Self paced online math classes often pair video instruction with online textbooks, quizzes and tests. You get quality math instruction without having extra books taking up space.
Learn Math Online with CTCMath
The Homeschool Family Membership from CTCMath provides online math instruction for your entire family, at one low price. Patrick Murray teaches online math lessons in a concise and easy to understand way.
With CTCMath, lessons are broken up into short, manageable chunks. I’ve never been a fan of drill and kill style math lessons, and I appreciate the short lessons with CTCMath. My kids appreciate this too. Math shouldn’t take hours to complete one lesson and it doesn’t with CTCMath.
If you are looking to outsource your homeschool math instruction, CTCMath offers a free trial so you can experience this excellent math program for yourself.

One of my favorite things about My Homeschool with a View is the opportunity I get to evaluate new homeschool resources. As a second generation homeschooler, I have seen many newcomers enter the homeschool space. One such newcomer is Education Perfect.
Education Perfect is an online learning platform with over forty thousand lessons, experiments, and topics to enrich homeschool lessons.
Homeschool students have opportunities to engage in learning competitions with other students from across the globe. Monthly homeschool festivals give kids the chance to compete for certificates and even prize money.
Every homeschooler that signs up with Education Perfect has the opportunity to participate in a free, online webinar Homeschooling Crash Course. This free option will teach you how to homeschool with Education Perfect.
In addition to the free Homeschooling Crash Course, you can book a 15 minute platform demo. And they offer registration and planning help. Education Perfect makes it easy to use their platform by eliminating any learning curve so you can jump in and get started.
Education Perfect works hand in hand with many homeschool curriculum options. You can search the subjects and topics within those subjects to enrich your homeschool lessons.
The lessons in Education Perfect are excellent for independent study. Your kids (or you) can choose a subject, then choose a lesson within that subject.
The subjects are divided by grade level, but I found with the content subjects it’s pretty flexible within a few grade levels.
While you can find many homeschool enrichment subjects on the Education Perfect platform, what stood out to me most were their foreign language options. As I’m prepping to homeschool high school, foreign language is high on my priority list. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of foreign language instruction offered.
The Homeschooling Product from Education Perfect currently offers these foreign language options:
Arabic
Chinese
French
German
Indonesian
Italian
Japanese
Spanish

Learn why I homeschool in the summer:
https://myhomeschoolwithaview.com/free-homeschool-resources/
It’s finally summer time! We made it through winter and we’re all excited to spend our days pool-side. Everyone is excited to be done homeschooling for the next few months…er…not so fast. While summer is a time for sunshine and fun, at My Homeschool with a View, it’s also a time for homeschooling.
Summer is a Good Time to Try New Homeschool Curriculum
If you have thought about switching homeschool curriculum, summer is a great time to give new curriculum a test run. Many homeschool parents worry about trying something new in the fall, not liking it, and then their schedule for the entire year is thrown off.
Trying new homeschool curriculum during the summer prevents scheduling issues later. You can think of it as a scheduling freebie. You can try something, if you don’t like it, you can stop wherever you are at, and use something that you like in the fall.
Homeschool Curriculum Free Trials for Summer
A great way to try new curriculum during the summer, is through free trials. Homeschool Buyer’s Club is offering some great free homeschool curriculum trials for the summer. These are exciting, high value resources that you can try during your summer homeschooling.

Tips for Summer Homeschooling
Now that you know all of the reasons to take advantage of summer homeschooling, here are my top 3 tips I have learned along the way.
1. Be flexible. A lot of activities pop up during the summer, and summer homeschooling doesn’t meant that our kids need to miss out. Plan to get in a few days a week, but don’t feel like you can’t skip a day, or two, or even a whole week.
2. Don’t forget about fun! Summer homeschooling doesn’t mean that we miss out on fun. There should still be days spent at the pool or splash park. Balance the work with the fun to still create fun summer memories with your kids.
3. Ease up on the schedule. Keeping summer homeschool work to a minimum each day will help your kids see that doing school in the summer time isn’t too bad. Don’t feel like you need to do every subject, every day. I often prioritize skills subjects during the summer. If we get content or enrichment (dessert subjects) done that’s just a bonus.

I have always loved history and that love is something I want to pass on to my kids. One of the ways I make history more meaningful in My Homeschool with a View is by incorporating hands on history resources, like historical timelines.
For years I have use the hands on history resources from Home School in the Woods and love the convenience of having everything in one place with the Printable Essential Timeline Library.
Home School in the Woods makes it easy for busy homeschool parents to incorporate historical timeline figures into their history lessons. Everything is in a convenient, ready-to-print package.
It’s never too early or too late to incorporate history timelines into your homeschool. The Printable Essential Timeline Library can be used as soon as you begin to teach your child history. A timeline notebook is something that your child can hold on to and keep beyond high school graduation. My perspective now as my kids are getting older is that a timeline notebook is something they will grow and mature into, not out of.
The Printable Essential Timeline Library can be used with any history curriculum. The helpful placement guide will help you match up the timeline events with what your student is currently learning. I have personally used the timeline figures successfully with a few different history curricula.
Home School in the Woods has served me well over the years with hands-on history curriculum for my homeschool. My boys have great memories of using some of the Time Travelers and Lap Paks. There is so much good stuff offered on their website, and they offer the best history timelines and lapbooks for homeschooling that I have found.
I will never be able to teach my kids everything about history by the time we are done homeschooling, but I hope to instill a love of learning history through hands on history resources like history timelines and historic timeline figures.

Review: Core Motivations Test and Curriculum from TruSpark

https://myhomeschoolwithaview.com/core-motivation-teens/
TruSpark is an online, self-paced, core motivation test and curriculum that’s based on sixty years of research. It is designed to help students find what truly drives them.
TruSpark’s research backed assessment is based on 19 core motivations. Core Motivations can be described as the driving force behind what you do and the decisions you make. The assessment helps narrow down these driving factors to your top three core motivations, then the curriculum takes you through what to do with the information.
TruSpark is designed for kids in their early to mid teens. I think this is an accurate age range, although older teens and young adults may be interested in learning about their core motivations as well. My thirteen year old really got into the program and was excited to learn about himself and explore some different career options. I think he’s at the sweet spot age for this program.
While those familiar with personality tests such as Meyers Briggs or the enneagram test may notice that TruSpark’s Core Motivations Test might seem similar on the surface, they aren’t the same. TruSpark goes beyond personality, talent and ability to find what really moves us at a core level. What drives us into the choices we make? Why do we like or dislike certain things? Core motivations are the answer to both of those questions.
The TruSpark assessment is also unique in the fact that it is story driven. Rather than asking generic questions you may see on personality tests, TruSpark has us write a short story about our own experiences, and then asks questions based on that story.
Add TruSpark to Your Homeschool! If you are planning for high school, or just trying to figure out how to reach your teen and help them discover their identity and build confidence, then TruSpark just might be the tool you need. Be sure to check out their website for more information.
