Sedgefield Saturday Markets | Garden Route South Africa
If you happen to be into Saturday markets Sedgefield, which is located between George and Knysna in the South African Garden Route, has got a treat for you, because there are not one, but three markets from which to choose. Each one of them has got a unique atmosphere and a unique vibe to it.
The Wild Oats Farmers Market has a selection of fresh farm produce and food stalls. For some reason the market closes at midday, right before lunch, so while it's a good spot to grab an early breakfast, it may not be an ideal lunch venue for those who prefer to get going a bit later on a weekend.
Next door to Wild Oats is the Mosaic Outdoor Village and Market, which is more on the craft side, but also with a good selection of food stalls. It's open later so is a good spot to find some excellent, freshly made foods. And, you will also find some incredibly talented local artists showcasing their creations.
The Scarab Art and Craft Village is my personal favourite, with some excellent creations that you won't find anywhere else. There isn't much in the way of food, although the local craft brewery is a good spot to take a break, do some beer tasting and get a basic meal.
All 3 markets are pet friendly so your dogs are welcome.

Teniqua Treetops Sedgefield Sustainable Forest Chalets
Teniqua Treetops is located 16 km from the N2 highway in the forest not far from the "slow town" of Sedgefield in the Garden Route. What a very unique place, with 8 chalets combining timber, glass and wood, built into the forest canopy.
The property is entirely off grid and sustainable, with solar panels providing ALL the electrical needs and purified water from natural sources. If you want a "resort or hotel" getaway, then it's probably not for you, but if you love nature and want to experience the tranquility of the forest, and in a 100% sustainable way, then THIS is a place you will enjoy.
We also explored the local area around Sedgefield, enjoying the local restaurants, sights, beaches and craft markets. I really can't recommend this place enough, we stayed as guests of the lodge, no conditions were attached and opinions are entirely my own.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site Howick Kwazulu Natal
The site where Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside Howick, in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Mandela was dressed in disguise as a driver when the police found him, this arrest led to his 27 year incarceration. On that day, armed security police, acting on a tip off, flagged down a car in which Nelson Mandela was pretending to be the chauffeur. The spot where this occurred is on the R103 the old main road which is just 5km from Howick.
The capture site has an educational centre and museum, and do take the time to take the "long walk to freedom" which takes you to a unique steel sculpture to honour a unique man.
To see the sculpture, visitors walk from the Visitor Centre along a path representing 'the Long Walk to Freedom' towards the sculpture culminating at the viewing point halfway down a cut into the earth where the steel columns gradually come together and focus at a particular point 30m meters from the sculpture. Along the way there are 27 steel signs, 1 for each year of his incarceration, and each one symbolising a milestone of Nelson Mandela's life.
The artist Marco Cianfanelli and the architect Jeremy Rose worked together from 2007 to 2012 to create a unique monument dedicated to the life of Nelson Mandela. Exactly 50 years after Mandela's arrest, on August 5, 2012, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site was inaugurated by then-President Jacob Zuma.

Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and Suspension Bridge Hike
Storm's River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. What an awesome place, with log cabins and campsites right on the ocean, and a must do is a hike to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the mouth of the Storm's River itself. The Storm's River is usually considered to eastern end of the Garden Route. The rest camp and facilities are managed by SANParks.
The rest camp is a base for hikes along some of the most beautiful coastline imaginable. Some are easy, some require a good level of fitness, so there's something for everyone. In fact this is the start of the famous Otter Trail, a 5 day, 4 night hike of 45 km along the coast, ending at Nature's Valley near Plettenberg Bay.
Bookings for accommodation and the Otter Trail can be made on the SANParks website:

Top 10 Adventures of The 2020's with Kangela
My choice of the Top 10 adventures in the first 3 years of the 2020's. It's a totally personal selection with no "winner" and it's not in any particular order of preference. There are full videos of most of the destinations, in some cases more than one, links are below. So without further fanfare, here is my Top 10.
1). Zanzibar - a stunning tropical island off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. There are several islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago, the main island, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, is officially called Unguja, and it’s been inhabited for at least 20 000 years.
2). Matjiesfontein - visiting this green oasis in the vast emptiness of the Karoo, is to take a step back in time, to the days of Anglo-Boer War and the reign of Queen Victoria. The entire village was declared a National Monument in September 1975.
Video: https://youtu.be/UBoKSfRKcZs
3). Victoria Falls Zimbabwe - also known as Mosi Oa Tunya, (translated as "The Smoke That Thunders"), on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it's neither the widest nor the highest waterfall in the world, but it is one of the world's Big 3. David Livingstone, who viewed the falls in 1855 wrote that "scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by Angels in their flight".
Video: https://youtu.be/ws8TbsdcX4A
4). Narrowboat Life - for 4 months in 2020 we spent the summer cruising a small part of the 3500 km of the English canals. Living the narrowboat life is a slow one, best enjoyed at a maximum of 4 miles per hour, and the summer of 2020 will always occupy a very special place in my life.
Video (episode 1): https://youtu.be/0tmxqEWVMp8
5). Africamps - late in 2020, after originally having to postpone the project due to lockdowns, we undertook an epic 5000km overland road trip over 6 weeks, visiting all 11 (at that time) Africamps across South Africa.
Video (episode 1): https://youtu.be/6U8YWhMJkF0
6). Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - 250km north of Upington in the Northern Cape, the Kgalagadi is real wilderness. It’s a harsh environment, and totally unforgiving, with no cell phone reception and no tar roads it really is the last remaining truly really wild part of South Africa.
Video (part 1): https://youtu.be/OTp0KBlomKw
7). Southern Namibia - a 10 day overland road trip. Visiting the Fish River Canyon, Luderitz and the diamond mining ghost towns of Kolmanskop (Kolmannskuppe in German) and Elizabeth Bay. From there we turned north to Sossusvlei, an incredible and special place where the Tsauchab River finds it's way to the ocean blocked by the desert sands.
Video: https://youtu.be/d1xh9JmDQ0Q
8). Kruger National Park - a popular overlanding destination in South Africa, ideal for day trip visitors with easy access from several entrance gates from the far North to the extreme South of the park. We've travelled the entire 360km north to south distance a couple of times, and will no doubt do so again.
Video (part 1): https://youtu.be/N2mctTRO-Hw
9). Gamkaskloof AKA Die Hel - located in a remote valley in the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was entirely cut off from the outside world until 1962, when the road; actually a steep, windy and sometimes dangerous gravel track, was built.
Video: https://youtu.be/VLBD7oX9j5k
10). A 2000 km round trip, over 7 nights through the beautiful Wild Coast which stretches over 250km of the most stunning coastline. Bad roads and incredible scenery are the order of the day.

Riemvasmaak Hot Springs Northern Cape South Africa
I had the privilege of visiting the remote village of Riemvasmaak in the dry, inhospitable far Northern Cape of South Africa.
Riemvasmaak is located near the Orange River, close to the Namibian border. It was originally settled in the early 1930s by people of Xhosa, Damara, Herero, Nama, and Coloured origin, but in the early 1970s the community was sent back to their ethnic homelands, some of them to Namibia, by the apartheid government to make place for a military testing site. The area remained a military testing site until 1994, when a process of land restitution allowed the return of families and communities. Some of the Namibian Riemvasmakers returned but a residual group founded their own traditional authority.
It's remote, barren and dry, and if solitude is what you're looking for, it probably doesn't get any better.

Coffee Bay South Africa Wild Coast
Coffee Bay itself is a strange place, there are no "facilities" as such, no shops other than spaza shops, some basic back packers and pizza joints, but we managed to find a decent guesthouse which was awesome. The village is spoilt by the abundance of rubbish lining the streets, and even beaches, locals told us that the local municipality has long since ceased to function. Which is a pity, because it has so much potential.
The Hole in The Wall is a must visit, we were told that the road was terrible and only passable in a 4x4. Which is incorrect, there is maintenance on the go and it can be done in a normal car. The informal "guides" can be a problem, I found that a firm but friendly approach was the way to go. It's a spectacular natural wonder, I highly recommend it.

Orange and Vaal River Confluence by Drone
South Africa's two greatest rivers, the Vaal and the Orange converge just outside the small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here's some drone footage from a visit I paid earlier this year. Both rivers were very full, notice the difference in colour and also how much slower the Vaal's flow is than the Orange.
From here, South Africa's longest river still has another 900 km before it reaches the Atlantic ocean at Alexander Bay, on the border with Namibia.

Abandoned Gold Mine Knysna South Africa | Millwood Deserted Gold Rush Town
People know about the gold rush at Pilgrim’s Rest & Barberton in the 1870s and The Witwatersrand in the 1880s - fewer know about the Knysna Gold Rush in 1884. Millwood Gold Mine is near Jubilee Creek, Rheenendal in the mountains around 30 kilometres from the Garden Route town of Knysna.
Millwwod has it's origins in 1876, when ostrich farmer James Hooper found a gold nugget in the Karatara riverbed. Hooper took the nugget to Charles F. Osborne, a government engineer who was working on a new road between George and Knysna, Hooper confirmed that it was gold.
Osborne did some prospecting but was transferred away to the west coast, but returned to Knysna in 1885 and continued his search for gold in the remote forests surrounding Knysna. On finding a promising reef in 1886, he, along with Thomas Bain, the famed pass-builder, compiled an unfavourable report and tried to discourage other gold seekers. Others though spread the word and within weeks a village of 135 stands, hotels, boarding houses, general stores, a post office, police barracks and a hospital had been erected, with fortune seekers from as far away as the UK, California and Australia flooding into the area.
The “town” even had it’s own newspapers and a 3 times a week postal service to Kynsna. The Millwood Diggings were proclaimed in 1887 and by 1888 the goldfields had a population of over 1000 people, 400 of whom were living in the village itself, one thousand four hundred claims were being worked. The yields were too low to sustain such a population and within 5 years most prospectors started drifting away to find richer pickings around the Witwatersrand.
The town was soon completely silent and abandoned. The Bendigo mine, named after the gold bearing Bendigo reef with it’s equipment and sorting sheds still stands as a silent, abandoned testament to the gold fever that thrived here over 130 years ago.
A mystical aura still seems to lurk here, people were born here, people died here and were buried there in the cemetery. The abandoned gold workings can still be visited, the area falls under SanParks who maintain the roads. In the past there was a museum and a tea room, these have since be closed down, these days it really is abandoned, on my visit I was the only person there.

Morgan Bay Wild Coast South Africa
Morgan Bay is a little under 100km past East London, close to the mouth of the Kei River, which marks the southern limit of the Wild Coast. A really pleasant town with friendly people, awesome views and a spectacular hike along the cliffs on the edge of the village. A short ferry ride across the Kei River to real rural South Africa where cows have right of way and life is synched to a much slower pace.
Our accommodation was at the Mitford Hotel, it’s a little dated, but comfortable enough and clean. There’s also a restaurant and pub, and it’s in an ideal spot right next to the beach. There's also some excellent caravan and camping facilities, the Morgan Bay camp site is right on the river mouth and has shady camp sites with electric points and clean ablutions. But there are plenty of self catering options in town, ranging from really really basic, to very up-market.
It's a town with loads of character and a slow paced way of life, one of my favourite small towns in this part of the world so far.

Die Hel Drone View Gamkaskloof AKA "The Hell" South Africa
Gamkaskloof, also known as "Die Hel", or "The Hell" is located in a remote valley in the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was entirely cut off from the outside world until 1962, when the road; actually a steep, windy and sometimes dangerous gravel track, was built.
Most of the original 160 residents of the valley left soon after the road was completed, the last one departing in 1991. These days, Piet and Marinette Joubert, descendants of Annetjie Joubert, the last remaining resident, have created a Shangri-la, which is most definitely not hell, a small piece of paradise buried deep in the mountains. There is no cell phone reception, no internet and although it’s not a requirement, a 4×4 vehicle is definitely recommended to negotiate the sometimes treacherous gravel road.
We stayed in the "Bush Camp" on the farm "Fontein", here's their website: http://gamkaskloof.co.za/
Here's the drone video from our trip, equipment was a DJI Mavic 2 Air.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp Kruger National Park Review
Shingwedzi Camp is situated in a very beautiful part of Kruger, along the banks of the Shingwedzi River, in the heart of mopane country. There's a "back to nature" feel about it, and being the furthest camp from any of Kruger’s main gates (137 kilometers from Phalaborwa and 70 kilometers from Punda Maria), it's the ideal spot to find peace and quiet.
Shingwedzi has a small shop, a restaurant, a filling station and a swimming pool, which is quite well hidden, but persevere and you'll find it😉
There's a variety of huts, bungalows and chalets, sleeping between 2 and 4 people, and there's an awesome campsite with 50 stands, all with power and braai facilities. The stands along the fence on the north-west of the camp boundary are somewhat sought after because of their early morning and evening game viewing potential, but can be "booked" at an extra cost.
Although Shingwedzi overlooks a large riverbed, which was almost dry during our visit, the view isn't as spectacular as at camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Letaba and Olifants.

Putsonderwater by Drone Abandoned Ghost Town in South Africa
Putsonderwater is a remote, and now abandoned "ghost town". It's a remote railway village in the far Northern Cape province of South Africa, straddling the railway line between De Aar and Upington. It's not that hard to reach, along a reasonably good gravel road between Marydale and Kenhardt and is well worth the detour. Seeing it from the air makes it an even more special experience, a once thriving community, now an abandoned ghost town, reverting back to nature.
Equipment was a Dji Mavic Air2 drone, footage was captured in 4K.
The full video of my visit can be seen here: https://youtu.be/aEqgOTWcWhE

Kosi Mouth is at the extreme north eastern point of South Africa, a kilometre or so south of the Mozambique border on the Indian Ocean coast. The Kosi Bay lakes and estuary are a place of incredible natural beauty, where man and nature exist, mostly side by side, as they have for centuries.
We camped at Utshwayelo Kosi Mouth Lodge and Camp, which is as close as you can get to the mouth when it comes to accommodation. You can obtain a permit for access to the beach and river mouth at the reception. A 4x4 is required to get to the river mouth, although a normal car will get you some of the way.
Kosi Bay is renowned for the traditional, woven fish traps and palisade kraals used by the community for well over 700 years – a skill passed down from generation to generation. The palisade fish kraals consist of a guide fence that curves in towards a fish trap, allowing fish easy entry but no escape.

Crooks Corner Kruger National Park Far North
The far north of the Kruger National Park and Crook's Corner. The north has an undeserved reputation for being less productive for game viewing, travel with us and we'll show you that it's not true. The northern Kruger Park has not only awesome game viewing, it also has some of the most beautiful scenery in the park and some character filled rest camps, and it's got significantly fewer visitors than the busier south.
On our recent trip, we entered the southern portion of park at Phabeni Gate, near the town of Hazeyview and turned north for the 314km journey to our overnight stop at Shingwedzi Rest Camp, one of the older camps in the park and one of our favourites. Then it was northwards again the next morning to the far northern corner of the park at Crooks Corner, where South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique meet in the middle of the Limpopo River. It's a spot with loads of history where stories of scoundrels, rebels and bandits abound.
Encounters with irritated elephants, a pair of cheetahs and abundant other game species made this one of my all time favourite trips to the Kruger Park, we were sad to exit 2 days later at the northern Phalaborwa Gate. But we will be back, that's for certain.

Muluwa Game Lodge Near Kruger National Park South Africa
Muluwa Luxury Game Lodge is a hop skip and a jump from the famous Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, South Africa. With breathtaking views over the stunningly beautiful Mpumalanga Lowveld, Muluwa offers luxury African safari accommodation, paired with a warm and genuine hospitality. It's ideally located as a base for exploring the Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route and the sights of Mpumalanga, or to simply relax and enjoy our setting in a peaceful wildlife estate, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.
Muluwa is a few kilometres from the small, arty town of White River and is 47km from the Kruger Park Numbi Gate and a little further to Phabeni Gate. The later is recommended, at the time of making this video, there had been muggings and attacks on tourists near Numbi Gate. Bear in mind that might have changed when you view this video.
The Estate is a 15 minute drive from the airport, where you are able to catch direct flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. There are also daily flights to international destinations like Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabawe and Namibia, with flights planned to Germany in the near future.
We stayed as guests of Muluwa Lodge, however the opinions expressed are my own, there were no strings attached to our stay.

Ndhula Tented Lodge Mpumalanga Glamping Near The Kruger National Park
We were privileged to spend 2 nights at Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge outside the small but artistic town of White River in Mpumalanga, South Africa and spent the time in one of their unique luxury tents. Ndhula, which means giraffe in the local language is located on the 765 hectare Likweti Wildlife Estate. It's a short drive to the Kruger National park, so is an ideal base for day trips into the park. But it's also a short hop to the scenic wonders of the Panorama Route, and some natural treasures like the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes and other beautiful spots.
There are 26 luxury safari tents, and the lodge itself has a restaurant, viewing deck and swimming pool area. Free roaming wildlife like giraffe, nyala, zebra and other animals are abundant. It's also a bird lovers paradise and for the energetic there's a wide choice of walks, mountain biking trails and 4x4 routes.
It's so worth visiting if you can, and the specials for locals make it actually quite affordable, even on a South African Rand budget.

Hluhluwe Bush Camp KZN Glamping in South Africa
Glamping at Hluhluwe Bush Camp near the northern KZN town of Hluhluwe, South Africa. There are 5 self-catering glamping tents, as well as various other options, from traditional camping to the very cool "Tipi" tents.
The property is completely off the grid with solar panels, inverters, a generator and borehole water with a treatment plant. Hluhluwe Bush Camp is ideally located for exploring the area, being only 30 minutes from the awesome Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park where you can see the big 5. It also overlooks, False Bay Park one of the 11 World Heritage Isimangaliso Parks, (meaning “Miracle and wonder”).
The town of Hluhluwe isn't far, but if you do happen to forget essentials, there is a farm stall that's stocked with all the basics, you can also get an excellent pizza and the pool is a great place to cool off on a hot day. If you are in the area, give them a call, you won't regret it.

Augrabies Falls 2022 Flood Low Water vs High Water
Augrabies Falls in flood 2022, I visited the falls twice, around 30 days apart and what a difference a month makes in the life of a waterfall. My first visit was in early January, in mid summer, when water levels were quite low. After heavy rains in the catchment area of Lesotho, the Free State and Gauteng, the Orange River was in flood 30 days later, so I loaded up the bakkie and was off again on the 800 kilometre journey back up north.
Augrabies, which means "Place of great noise" in the San language, is formed when the mighty Orange River, South Africa's longest and largest, is channeled through a narrow chasm formed in the ancient granite over millions of years of water. The sight, especially when in flood is spectacular. It's not Victoria Falls, Iguazu or Niagara to be sure, but it's an awesome experience all the same.
The falls are in a national park and SANParks has provided excellent facilities, a well stocked shop, restaurant, chalets and a pleasant camp site with clean ablutions and lots of green grass & shade. It's well worth a visit, I hope this video helps convince you of that.

The Wild Coast Eastern Cape South Africa
A Wild Coast Road Trip in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A 2000 km round trip over 7 nights, staying at the Storm's River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park for our first night. What an awesome place, with log cabins and camp sites right on the ocean, and a must do is a hike to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the mouth of the Storm's River itself.
Then it was onto the Wild Coast, although we spent one night along the way at Port Alfred. Morgan Bay is about 100km past East London and is very close to the mouth of the Kei River, the start of the Wild Cost proper. A really pleasant town with friendly people, awesome views and a spectacular hike along the cliffs on the edge of the village.
A short ferry ride across the Kei River and we were in the are previously known as the Transkei, rural South Africa where cows have right of way and life is synched to a much slower pace. The road the Coffee Bay ranges from excellent on the N2 national route, to pretty awful once you get off the main roads. Loads of potholes, unmarked speed humps and an assortment of domestic animals wandering around.

Union's End Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park
Union's End is the far northern end of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, and is the north western most point of South Africa and the extreme north of the Northern Cape province. It's the meeting point of 3 countries, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.
There's no fanfare or fancy "monument", just a post with arrows pointing to each country's capital with the distance, and a reed covered information board giving some history of the place. There is no fence between South Africa and Botswana, however the border with Namibia is demarcated by a fence. The Namibian side is farmland, so isn't part of the transfrontier park.
This was the first purely camping trip in the Ford Ranger, and the first time I had the opportunity to test out the drawer system by @Alu-Cab and the portable power by @Jackery which included their solar panel. I've got to say that I was impressed by both. Also got to say that I'm not sponsored by either of those companies, so it's just my personal opinion.
