Michigan coach Juwan Howard hits Wisconsin assistant after loss 😭🤬
The handshakes quickly turned to punches.
After Wisconsin beat Michigan on Sunday in a Big Ten Conference basketball game, members of both teams fought after Michigan head coach Juwan Howard slapped Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft in the head. Howard explained after the melee that he was upset Wisconsin had called a timeout with a few seconds left in the game when Wisconsin was already up 14 points.
University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel issued a statement after the incident.
"There is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors," he said. "We will review the situation more thoroughly and work with the Big Ten Conference as they determine their disciplinary actions and will determine if any further disciplinary actions are needed."
Manuel said he called his counterpart at the University of Wisconsin, as did University of Michigan interim president Mary Sue Coleman, to apologize "for the totally unacceptable behavior."
As the teams lined up to shake hands after the game, Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard grabbed Howard's arm and appeared to try to talk with him. In a postgame press conference, Gard said he tried to explain to Howard why he called the timeout.
"He came up to me and pulled his mask down and said, 'I'll remember that,' and he started pointing at me and tapping me in the chest," Gard said.
Howard disputed Gard's retelling, saying it was unnecessary for Gard to touch him.
"It wasn't called for that, when we're talking," he said. "At that point, you know, at that point, I thought it was time to protect myself."
During the confrontation, players and coaches from both teams crowded around the men. As things heated up, Howard swung, hitting Krabbenhoft.
Howard was a star member of Michigan's "Fab Five" in the early 1990s. He, along with Chris Webber and Jalen Rose, helped popularize baggy shorts and black Nike socks in basketball. They're the subject of a documentary that explored their impact on the sport, as well as the investigation into illegal payments to players. The teams failed to win a national championship, but several, including Howard, went on to successful NBA careers. He won two NBA championships with the Miami Heat.
The Big Ten Conference issued a statement saying it will review the altercation and would take "swift and appropriate disciplinary action" when it completes its investigation.

NBA All-Star Weekend tips off in Cleveland amid snowstorm
NBA All-Star Weekend tips off in Cleveland amid snowstorm, coronavirus concerns
CLEVELAND — As NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Magic Johnson and other basketball luminaries gathered at a downtown hotel Friday morning to open All-Star Weekend, the outside temperature plunged into the teens following an overnight snowstorm. A conked-out delivery truck clogged traffic on Superior Avenue while awaiting a jumper cable rescue, an apt metaphor for a midseason showcase that is unfolding in fits and starts.
Thank Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball, who was selected to both the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday and the All-Star Game on Sunday, for providing the weekend’s unofficial slogan: “Stay out the cold and don’t get sick.”
The weather concerns canceled flights and scrambled travel plans for many attendees, including CNN anchor John King, who drove from D.C. late Thursday so that he could host a panel at the NBA’s annual technology summit, which brings together players, owners and other industry executives.
While Silver expressed hope that the weekend might serve as a pandemic bookend and the NBA dropped its indoor masking requirement for attendees, covid-19-related challenges were still visible everywhere, from shuttered storefronts to health protocols that required reporters to submit proof of their vaccines, booster shots and negative test results and to don layers of credentials and wristbands to attend events. Bill Russell cited health concerns in his decision to skip the festivities, which will include recognition of the league’s 75th anniversary team Sunday.
“I was proud to play in 12 All-Star Games, and have been lucky to attend so many as a fan,” the Hall of Fame center said in a statement. “I don’t lightly make the decision to miss one. But I don’t take anything about covid lightly either.”
Even with less pomp and circumstance than usual — Michael Jordan’s annual VIP party is off, and multiple sneaker brands opted against hosting their typical pop-up events — this year represents clear progress from 2021, when the NBA was forced to scale down and relocate its All-Star Weekend from Indianapolis to a fan-less arena in Atlanta. The league’s top decision-makers are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, and they played up the promises of the future at the tech summit.
The NBA enlisted former president Barack Obama to help unveil its ambitious plans to develop training programs across Africa, then hosted TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew for an extended conversation about the social media app’s explosive growth. Owners such as Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks and Dan Gilbert of the Cleveland Cavaliers participated in panel discussions about cryptocurrency, NFTs, sports gambling and other potential revenue streams, and Silver introduced “Coach Nat” — short for NBA Augmented Telepresence — a hologram-like instructor who will teach basketball’s fundamentals in the metaverse.
“My role is to help coach, train and develop the next generation of NBA talent,” said Coach Nat, who was voiced by Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal. “I know all the best moves and am untethered by one single dimension. I can even make a free throw.”
Back in non-augmented reality, Manu Ginóbili headlined the list of 11 nominees for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022. Joining the San Antonio Spurs legend were former NBA players Michael Cooper, Tim Hardaway and Marques Johnson; WNBA stars Swin Cash and Lindsay Whalen; and longtime NBA coach George Karl. This year’s class will be officially selected April 2.
“I’m personally rooting for Tim Hardaway,” said NBA TV commentator Isiah Thomas, who led the Detroit Pistons to titles in 1989 and 1990. “If you’ve got [Mitch] Richmond and [Chris] Mullin in the Hall of Fame, you’ve got to have Tim in there.”
Ball, Anthony Edwards and the league’s other first- and second-year talents closed out opening night in the revamped Rising Stars Challenge, which pitted four teams coached by former NBA stars in a tournament-like format that featured first-round games played to 50 points and a final game played to 25 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
In the first game, Team Isiah Thomas squeaked by Team James Worthy, 50-49, thanks to game-winning free throws by Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane. Jalen Green had 20 points in a losing effort, and the Houston Rockets rookie guard proved to be a crowd favorite with several highflying dunks that provided a taste of what’s to come when he competes in the Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday. The loosey-goosey affair saw Magic guard Cole Anthony pull down his own shorts in an attempt to distract Bane on his final free throw.
“I do what it takes for the win,” Anthony said on Twitter after his unsuccessful self-pantsing.
The second contest saw Team Rick Barry defeat Team Gary Payton, 50-48, thanks to 13 points and eight rebounds from Cleveland Cavaliers rookie forward Evan Mobley, who drew the loudest cheers of the night because of his hometown connection. Rockets forward Jae’Sean Tate hit a game-winning runner to advance to the final.
Team Rick Barry eked out a 25-20 win over Team Isiah Thomas in the final, with Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham, the top pick in the 2021 draft, claiming MVP honors with 18 points across the two games. Magic rookie forward Franz Wagner closed the victory at the free throw line.
“After watching the first game, we knew everyone was going to compete and go for the win,” Cunningham said. “We had to come out and prove ourselves, and I’m glad we did that.”
Attendance at the event was strong despite the weather, and the Rising Stars’ new format achieved its intended goal of circumventing the extended stretches of garbage time that often arise in exhibitions. The show went on through the trying circumstances, leaving Edwards to enjoy a brief victory lap on behalf of his fellow youngsters.
“Before we got drafted, they were saying how our draft class was going to be terrible, all this, yada yada,” the Minnesota Timberwolves guard said. “Everybody in my draft class, I’m just happy to see them being successful in the league because of how much bad they had to say about us.”

IU basketball, Mike Woodson suspends five players vs. Northwestern: 'I'm very disappointed.'
Mike Woodson suspends five IU players for Tuesday’s game at Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. – Citing “disciplinary reasons,” IU coach Mike Woodson announced near tipoff that he had suspended five players for the Hoosiers’ game Tuesday night at Northwestern.
Woodson confirmed his decision speaking with Don Fischer on Indiana’s pregame radio show. A program news release distributed at the same time confirmed the five players were guards Xavier Johnson, Parker Stewart, Khristian Lander and Tamar Bates, as well as center Michael Durr.
3 reasons IU lost to Northwestern:Hoosiers come up short with 5 players suspended
Doyel:Mike Woodson doesn't hold back after blowout loss. Well, he held back that one time.
“When you don’t obey the rules,” Woodson told Fischer, “you’ve got to do things you don’t want to do.”
After the Hoosiers lost 59-51 to the Wildcats, Woodson addressed the suspensions, but wouldn't say for how long the disciplined players would be sidelined.
"I don't know if it's a one game or not," he said. "That's a decision I gotta make as we go home tonight."
Woodson added: "I'm very disappointed, because I'm strictly about team. Those guys in the locker room know I'm very upset about it."
Per IU policy, if the players were being suspended for failed drug tests — underlining all those words — they could not dress out for this game and they are dressed out.
His decision meant the Hoosiers faced Northwestern without their most-accurate 3-point shooter, their primary backup center and no established point guard. Woodson confirmed sophomores Trey Galloway and Anthony Leal would begin the game in place of the two suspended starters. Galloway has functioned as a secondary point guard at times for Indiana this season.
Point guard Rob Phinisee is still absent via injury (plantar fasciitis).

Why Kansas Jayhawks basketball lost to Texas Longhorns — with a ‘crap’ play standing out
Tre Mitchell smiled when fans surrounded him a few steps outside the Texas locker room, shrugging about a half-hour after Monday’s game when asked about his all-important shot.
“I’ll take it,” he said with a laugh.
Not the way he planned, but three critical points all the same.
Mitchell’s shot should be the lasting image from Kansas’ 79-76 road loss to Texas on Monday night at Erwin Center.
The Jayhawks had the game won with a minute left and up four. All they needed was to force one more Longhorns miss.
And they seemed to get it from Mitchell. Texas guard Marcus Carr flung a behind-the-back pass to him, and Mitchell squared up from just beyond the three-point line on the right wing.
His brick on the previous possession was ugly. Mitchell had set his feet from straight on with that one, clanging it off the backboard and side rim before Ochai Agbaji cleared the board with KU leading by two.
This one — after a timeout — appeared on the same trajectory with the Longhorns now down four. It was at least three feet strong, but this time after hitting the glass, it caromed toward the rim, rattling in for three points that changed the game’s entire course.
It was silly. It was ridiculous. Mitchell knew it after the game and also after he hit it, clapping his hands on the court and laughing toward the sky.
KU coach Bill Self, meanwhile — a few steps away on KU’s sideline — collapsed his shoulders in toward his chest, his entire body crumpling in disbelief as he saw a near-certain Big 12 win become suddenly complicated following the luckiest of bounces.
“I don’t know that Chris (Beard) drew up a play to bank in a three,” Self deadpanned afterward. “If he did, he’s a helluva basketball coach.”
Self was clear from that point in his interview, though: that shot did not beat KU on Monday. “Crap like that happens,” he said of the make.
But KU cost KU, he said, both with its play in the final minute of the first and second halves.
It was enough to sink the Jayhawks in a game that could’ve easily been theirs. “A lot of things,” Self said, “that we could have done different late.”
Self’s mind probably flashed a few places.
Like late first half, when KU had possession while tied with 38 seconds left. At worst, the Jayhawks should’ve traded two final possessions with the Longhorns.
After two careless turnovers, though, KU went into halftime down five, with Self flinging his arms toward his players in frustration before heading to the locker room.
“That had as much to do with us losing the game as anything,” Self said later. KU also couldn’t make the one more play it needed after Mitchell’s fortunate bounce pulled Texas within one at the end.
Agbaji got a driving lane and saw David McCormack open for an alley-oop ... but his pass caromed off the rim. The loose ball plopped in the middle of an open area, but KU’s Christian Braun was a half-step late.
Then, Texas was able to get the shot it wanted to take the lead. Carr drove against KU’s Dajuan Harris to force help, leaving KU’s defenders scrambling to help each other.
One of them was Braun, who sunk to the lane to discourage an inside pass while letting Texas’ leading scorer Timmy Allen free himself at the elbow.
Allen didn’t miss his opportunity, putting his shot straight through to give Texas the lead.
“The fact that we didn’t contest that one possession,” Self said, “was the biggest play of the game.”
KU’s attempted call after that didn’t go as planned either.
Texas had been face-guarding national-player-of-the-year candidate Agbaji all game, looking to make his teammates win the game on offense. For the most part, they had, scoring 76 points on a Texas defense that had surrendered 51, 51 and 41 in its previous three home games.
In essence, Agbaji taking his defender out of the way was allowing KU to play 4-on-4, with teammates succeeding most of the night with the favorable matchup.
Self said he hoped to play to that again after a timeout. He pulled Agbaji out of the lane knowing that Texas would give him extra attention, then wanted to get the ball to McCormack, who had been KU’s best player all night. Harris didn’t go that direction, though, believing he had a crease on a drive. He lost the ball on the way up for a shot to turn it over.
“Obviously we didn’t execute very good coming out of that timeout,” Self said. “So that’s on me.”
Self usually wins more than his fair share of close games. Heck, it’s why KU had built up the Big 12 lead it had going into Monday night, with the Jayhawks entering 4-0 in league contests decided by five points or fewer.
Winning “most” does not mean “all,” though. And while Agbaji appeared like he might have the game-clinching move with just over a minute left — sprinting from outside the lane to corral an offensive rebound and stick it back in to put KU up four — it instead placed the Jayhawks in a spot where they needed to make one more play over the final 1:12.
They didn’t. But that’s not a fatal flaw either.
KU was a one-point Vegas favorite, meaning any number of random-chance events could potentially be the deciding factor to swing the outcome. It’s essential to see the other side of this too, as right after Agbaji put in his stick-back, Texas’ Courtney Ramey raised his hands to his head in disbelief.
He knew, in that moment, that his missed blockout was likely to be the difference between winning and losing. Texas was down four with a minute left. Things looked bleak.
The Longhorns needed something spectacular to get back in it.
And a half-hour after the game was over, Mitchell remained shocked by what happened next.
“In the right moment,” he told the Texas fans encircling him, “I hit it.”
Self certainly will bemoan other sequences, and film sessions later this week likely will reveal more instances where KU’s focus could’ve been better.
The narrative, nonetheless, shouldn’t get too twisted. Yes, Texas won, and Kansas lost.
But it still took some divine-like intervention for the Longhorns to get there.
And a silly, ridiculous shot falling perfectly their way.

Could Kyler Murray scrubbing social media channels mean a return to LA Angels' rival?
Recently, former LA Angels' rival first-round pick Kyler Murray scrubbed his Instagram profile clean of Arizona Cardinals content, and doesn't follow them anymore.
Arizona QB Kyler Murray has unfollowed the team & removed all Cardinals-related content from his Instagram.
The only recent content was a picture of himself at the Pro Bowl and a story re-share of a Mike Evans post that said "always wanted to catch a pass from the Texas legend." pic.twitter.com/ltcQTvJcPA
— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) February 7, 2022
Of course, this likely doesn't mean anything about the former Oakland Athletics first-round pick and his chances of leaving the Arizona Cardinals for MLB. Many are of course floating the idea out there, however, as Murray has expressed interest in returning to baseball during his young NFL career.
?⚾️ pic.twitter.com/xOlwaLBhTq
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) February 7, 2022
If Kyler decides to put on the baseball spikes again, it would indeed likely be with the A's. Because Oakland was the team to take him No. 9 overall in the draft, the outfielder's rights still belong to the franchise.

Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets hand Nets 8th loss in a row
DENVER | Nikola Jokic had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists and the Denver Nuggets beat Brooklyn 124-104 on Sunday to extend the Nets’ losing streak to eight games.
Jokic has an NBA-best 14 triple-doubles this season. He scored 23 points in the second and third quarters when Denver went from trailing by seven to leading by 21.
The Nuggets held Brooklyn to 29 points in the second half to end a three-game skid.
“We rebounded better in the second half, we made them take tough shots. The defense was much, much better,” Jokic said.
Will Barton had 21 points and Aaron Gordon had 17 points and nine rebounds in his return from a two-game absence.
Nets guard James Harden missed his second straight game with left hamstring tightness. Brooklyn coach Steve Nash said the team is being cautious with the former MVP.
Nash was asked before the game if it’s accurate the team won’t trade Harden before Thursday’s deadline and gave a definitive answer.
“Yes, that’s correct,” he said.
Kyrie Irving finished with 27 points and 11 assists and Cam Thomas had 20 for Brooklyn. The losing streak is the longest since the Nets lost seven in a row from Dec. 26, 2019, to Jan. 7, 2020. They finished 0-5 on the trip.
“The common thread is not having everyone and us finding ways to get better,” Patty Mills said. “It has been tough but no excuses. We’ve got to hang our hat on our ability to rely on each other.”
Brooklyn continues to play without Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge and Nic Claxton due to injuries, and Joe Harris has not played since Nov. 14 with an ankle injury.
The mounting injuries have contributed to the Nets falling into the first play-in position in the Eastern Conference.
“We’re not going to panic, there’s still plenty of games after the all-star break when Kevin gets back,” Nash said. “Hopefully have Kevin and James. You’re talking about five guys. That’s your starting lineup, potentially.”
Denver led 76-75 at halftime and outscored the Nets 31-16 in the third quarter to take a 107-91 lead. Jokic came out late in the third sitting on nine assists and looked like he would finish an assist shy of another triple-double until Brooklyn cut the deficit to 109-99.
Jokic checked back in and fed Barton for a layup for his 10th assist.
The Nuggets stayed a game ahead of Minnesota to remain in the sixth position in the Western Conference with 10 days left before the All-Star break.
“This is a challenging time for every team, every coach, and every player,” Denver coach Michael Malone said. “We have five games until the all-star break. We’re tired of each other. I see this team more than I see my wife and kids.”
FANCY DRIBBLING
Irving showed off his skills in the second quarter when he bumped into Denver forward Aaron Gordon and fell to the court. Irving never stopped dribbling as he got up, and then hit Day’Ron Sharpe with a bounce pass as Sharpe went baseline to the bucket.
Sharpe lost the ball as he went up for a shot and the Nets didn’t finish off Irving’s artwork.
BIG-MAN DECISION
DeMarcus Cousins’ second 10-day contract with Denver expired after Sunday’s game and a decision looms on whether to sign him for the rest of the season. Cousins said he is comfortable with this team and wants to stay on the roster.
“I would love to be here,” he said. “I think it’s a great fit. Both sides benefit from it and I think can be the extra piece to push us over the top.”
TIP-INS
Nets: Durant is still rehabbing his sprained MCL but has started to get on the court for basketball activities. … Blake Griffin scored all of his 19 points in the first half.
Nuggets: Gordon returned to the lineup after missing two games with a hamstring injury. … G Austin Rivers went to the locker room in the first half with a slight limp and was accompanied by team trainer Steve Short. He did not return.
UP NEXT
Nets: Host the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

3 Boston Celtics blockbusters that would blow up NBA trade season
All season long, Boston Celtics fans have been patiently waiting to see what exactly their favorite NBA franchise will opt to do during the 2022 trade season. Thus far, outside of the low-impact deal (at least, in the immediate future) for Bol Bol, they’ve stayed rather silent.
Now, with literally just a few days remaining until February 10th’s deadline, both fans and media pundits alike are sitting uncomfortably on the edge of their seats in hopes of seeing this front office set off some serious fireworks to try and help get the ball club back to being considered one of the upper echelon squads in the association.
While there seem to be a rather significant amount of people who believe that all the C’s need is to make a few key shakeups to their rotation, especially considering how great they’ve been playing of late, there are still plenty of others who believe Brad Stevens and co. must go all-out in order to bring on more top-flight talents to the roster.
In the past, we’ve gone about and discussed plenty of trade ideas the Boston Celtics could partake in, with ideas ranging from moves for mere role players to megadeals.
Today, we at the Houdini are going to take things a step further by discussing 3 absolute blockbusters that, be it likely to happen or not, would absolutely blow up this year’s deadline:
Trade No. 1) A multi-team deal between the Boston Celtics, Spurs, and Kings
Starting off our list of blockbusters that would blow up 2022’s trade season, we’re coming in scorching hot with this multi-team banger between the Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and Sacramento Kings.
As recent rumors have suggested, there seems to be a bit of concern about C’s star, Jaylen Brown‘s desire to stay put in Eastern Massachusetts past this year, with some reporting that, should things not improve to his liking, he could opt to request a trade elsewhere during this coming offseason.
As always, let us reiterate the fact that we would love nothing more than to see the Jays thrive in Boston and get this team back to contending for titles whilst running alongside one another.
However, just for entertainment’s sake, let’s say that things start to drastically deteriorate between both the wing and the front office, and they look to shop him as soon as Thursday’s deadline — this would unequivocally be the ideal transaction to partake in.
If the Celtics ever decide to trade away their young and talented star, they’ll undoubtedly be looking to get a monster haul in return for his services for, frankly, he’s that good.
To us, Dejounte Murray and Harrison Barnes could easily constitute as being considered a worthy enough return package.
For years now, Boston’s point guard position has been viewed as perhaps their weakest within the rotation. Since the days when Isaiah Thomas was leading the charge, this team has seen a revolving door of players trying to fill in as a long-term answer at the one.
To date, they have yet to find the player that they definitively see as being their franchise floor general.
However, a guy like Murray could easily be that long-awaited talent to have run the show for this ball club moving forward.
Currently in the midst of a career season with the lowly San Antonio Spurs, the 25-year-old finds himself putting up stellar all-around averages of 19.6 points, 9.2 assists, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game on 44 percent shooting from the floor.
An All-Defensive talent and a high-end facilitator, the addition of Murray alone would take a tremendous amount of pressure off of Jayson Tatum on both sides of the floor.
However, Brown for the Spurs stud straight up isn’t something Stevens should be all that interested in (not at this point in time, anyway), which is why adding Barnes to the equation would be imperative, making this hypothetical transaction go from being an “on the cusp” move to simply a no-brainer.
The 29-year-old is another savvy scorer, facilitator, and defender who’s also currently having a phenomenal campaign.
Through 50 games played with the Kings, the power forward is boasting stellar averages of 16.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists on 46 percent shooting from the floor and 41 percent shooting from deep.
With both Murray and Barnes in tow at the starting one and four, respectively, a large chunk of Ime Udoka’s desire to see more playmaking from his main guys would easily be covered, thus taking this semi-unnatural task of being a facilitator off the shoulders of Tatum and, in turn, have him revert back to focusing almost all of his offensive attention on getting into scoring opportunities which would likely go on to help elevate him closer to that highly coveted superstar status.
An added perk of all this, of course, is seeing Doug McDermott coming aboard to go about and fill the C’s need for a quality scoring option to have come off the pine (averaging 11.7 points on 47 percent shooting from the field and 43.5 percent shooting from deep).
For the Sacramento Kings, they bring on two recent lottery-selected wings in Devin Vassell and Aaron Nesmith to add to their young and promising core, Al Horford to add a veteran presence to such a youthful roster and, obviously, to serve as a salary matcher with only a partially guaranteed deal for 2022-23, and the rights to a future first-round pick.
And, as for the Spurs, they find themselves bringing Brown to town to serve as their new franchise cornerstone where they can go about and bypass a full-fledged rebuild and, instead, actually look to build around an already established young star wing.
On top of this, they also are seen taking a chance on the former No. 2 overall pick, Marvin Bagley III who, though has been viewed as a disappointment when considering where he was selected back in 2018 and who was taken after him on that very night (Luka Doncic, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Collin Sexton, etc.), has still shown flashes of being a solid starting big man in this league.
For his career, the 22-year-old holds averages of 19.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per 75 possessions on 49 percent shooting from the floor.

Klay Thompson's best game is rapid response to Bob Myers' prediction
SAN FRANCISCO – Warriors team president Bob Myers was, like many fans around the NBA, waiting for Klay Thompson to take a journey into the shooting zone he knows perhaps better than anyone who has ever shot a basketball.
“From a physical standpoint, the way he’s moving, we would argue he’s ahead of schedule,” Myers said Thursday night, shortly before tipoff against the Kings. “I think the shot will come.”
Klay’s shot came a few minutes later.
And it kept coming. Klay’s 3-pointers were falling and falling and falling, and the sellout crowd at Chase Center was smiling and smiling and smiling as he led the Warriors to a 126-114 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
“It was awesome to see,” longtime teammate Stephen Curry said. “I love when he's got a pep in his step and getting rewarded with shots going in. He can get hot at any moment when he's got that look in his eye, we love to see that. It's a big boost for the whole team, I know it's for him as well.”
By the time Thompson left the floor early in the fourth quarter, having reached his 24-minute limit, he had a team-high 23 points, draining a season-high seven 3-balls in nine attempts – easily his most efficient shooting from distance since his return on Jan. 9.
Klay made his first six 3-pointers, punctuating the streak with four in a little more than two minutes early in the second quarter. He scored 20 points on nine shots in 14 first-half minutes.
“The guy has had 60 (points) in a game, 38 (actually 37) in a quarter,” Kings coach Alvin Gentry said. “So, it’s not one of those things. Once he gets going, he’s hard to turn off.”
Thompson made his first seven shots overall, the sixth a 3-pointer that gave him 1,828 3-pointers for his career, moving him past the late, legendary Kobe Bryant into 20th place on the NBA’s list for career triples.
“Always a huge honor,” Thompson said. “We miss him so much. He was one of one. And he’s my biggest inspiration for playing basketball. I really miss him and Gigi (Bryant).”
This was Thompson’s 11th game of the season, a number that corresponds with his jersey, the year (2011) in which he was drafted by the Warriors and the slot (No. 11 overall) in which he was selected. He also, maintaining symmetry, took 11 shots in the game.
This is the kind of shooting performance Thompson is famous for, as Gentry pointed out. When he is in the Klay Zone, there is no such thing as a “bad shot.” With, according to Curry, one exception: “If it’s blocked.”
None of Thompson’s shots was blocked in this game. While firing shots through the net, he also demonstrated his passing wizardry.
“It wasn’t just the shooting; he had seven assists,” coach Steve Kerr said. “His drive-and-kick to Damion Lee early in the fourth quarter was a big basket. Kind of broke the game open.”
That play sparked a 14-3 rally that gave the Warriors a 110-92 lead with 8:02 left. Thompson’s night was done. His 3-point shooting percentage entering the game was 32.9. After going 7-of-9 beyond the arc, it was 37.8 – much closer to his 41.9 career percentage.

It was as if he heard Myers’ pregame comments and immediately responded with corrections.
“I did not,” Thompson said. “I was getting ready for pregame and I’m happy with the night. But I want to build off this. I want to shoot the lights out all the time.”
There have been many nights when Klay did precisely that. This was the first sustained glimpse of that kind of accuracy since he returned after a 31-month absence in the wake of serious injuries to his left knee and right Achilles’ tendon.
There will more such nights, because that’s Thompson’s history. Which is why Myers said what he said. He could not have known such a night would come so soon.

Healthy Anthony Davis can spark Lakers recovery, even without LeBron James
Healthy Anthony Davis can spark Lakers recovery, even without LeBron James
By his standards, Anthony Davis was subpar prior to his MCL injury on Dec. 17.
He was with averaging 23.3 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks through those first 27 games, but just couldn't seem to assert himself in the game as the Lakers were still finding their on-court chemistry and rhythm having added superstar Russell Westbrook in the offseason.

As he showed in the Orlando bubble, when he led the Lakers to a title along with LeBron James, there's more to him than that.
In recent games, especially those where he has played without a minutes restriction, the Lakers big man seems to have regained his superstar ways.

He played a key role in the team's 99-94 home win against the Trail Blazers, finishing with 30 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks and two assists as the Lakers suited up for a fourth straight game without James.
More than the all-round numbers, it's Davis' play on the defensive end of the floor where he can positively impact the team the most. After letting up 37 points in the second quarter, the Lakers clamped down with AD as the anchor and only allowed 41 points in the second half.
“We want to make sure we become one of the top defensive teams like we’ve been the last couple years," AD said postgame.
"Overall, I was proud of how our guys competed and pulled out the W." Frank Vogel shares his key takeaways from a gritty #Lakers win.

Over the last two seasons, the Lakers were ranked third (2019-20) and first (2020-21) in the league for defensive rating but that standard has slipped this season as the Lakers are ranked 17th. In the 17 games that Davis missed with the MCL injury, the team's defensive rating was ranked 24th in the league.
It's that end of the floor, along with his minimum 20-10 double-double, that AD can really spark the Lakers especially through stretches of games without LeBron James against non-contending teams. For example, in the five games since his return, they are already a Top-10 defence.
According to Tankathon, the team has the second-toughest schedule remaining but there are certainly winnable games on the schedule where the Lakers should be favoured to win just by the talent on their roster even if James isn't playing.
In the six remaining games leading into the All-Star break, AD should be able to carry the Lakers past teams like the Clippers, Knicks, Trail Blazers and Jazz based on either talent or recent form.
On Wednesday night, he balled out even while he was not 100 percent. Imagine what he can do, once he is fully healthy.
