This custom (Wild Boar Hat Pin) was created using the client's boar figurine as the mold. The boar was a hollow cast form in really bad shape missing a leg and ear and made of a light weight pot metal. I used a hand saw to cut the piece to make the perfect size for a hat pin. The head was then put in a molding sand called (Delft Clay) to crate the mold impression. Watch to see the steps it took to achieve a very happy result! When casting using this process it is hard to get a perfectly detailed casting as the piece needs to be removed carefully and hopefully without moving much sand in the process. In today's lapidary talk I am discussing the polishing of Malawi Agate that has some rough matrix spots. Normally I would do a final polish with either cerium oxide or aluminum oxide. However, in this case with the matrix areas being rough, I have chosen to forgo that oxide polishing step. The rough spots will collect the oxide polish and ruin the look of the stone. Chasing and repoussè is a favorite process of mine. Here I show a shortened video of the process I go through to work a piece of fine silver metal. The process is lengthy and what you see in this two and a half minute video actually took 20 to 24 hours of work to complete it. The video doesn't show the repeated steps I take in the process. I work both sides of the metal numerous times back and forth, annealing the metal in-between each step. Every time a side is worked (hammered) the metal gets work hardened. The metal needs to be heated to allow the molecules in the metal to open up in order to soften the metal enough to continue to move it. Here is just a snipet to show what I do when designing Jewelry with a simple stone. From a rough rock to a polished stone we cut and polish these stones. This stone has the most unique pattern. Some of the pieces actually have a crossing line pattern and by cutting the stone in the perfect place we were able to show a cross as the feature on the cabochon. I am going to set the prongs to match up with cross to highlight the cross even more. I have also rolled my sheet silver in the rolling mill with a circular pattern to enhance the leopard pattern in the stone. Ready set go! Just in time for fall these hand made leaves formed by pressing the leave into a molding compound and rolling PMC into the mold and firing it. Some pieces were prepared by adding the PMC slip directly to the back side of a leaf, up to 14 layers. Then firing it in a kiln.

On my bench today I am cleaning up my setting and setting the stone. The setting is enhanced by a .999 silver pin oak leaf the I made by making my own mold from an actual leave and using metal clay. Once the clay was fired it was ready to be added to my piece.

Here I am drawing a design for creating a piece of jewelry. I will be using the technique of chasing and repousse'. Chasing is the art of hammering an steel linear punch to outline the design on the front of the metal. Repousse´ is the act of pushing the metal up from the back side using multiple shaped end of steel punches. Work can be Chased alone or Repousse´d alone or the two techniques can be used together.
