The Gentle Healthy Traveler

Says Dennis Dueker, co-founder of Dueker Ranch, with his wife Kathy: “Nine years ago, I was introduced to Horse Therapy, when a friend of mine called and needed a favor. He asked if I could come to his ranch and help with a new program that was starting. The program was Horse Therapy for Special Needs Children. I told him I would help, but I did not believe that pony rides would help handicapped kids…After the first Saturday helping with horse Therapy I WAS A BELIEVER.” As Dennis worked more and more with horses and children and shared the results with his wife Kathy, the more the idea of using their own horses to help children appealed to them. Eventually, their discussions turned into reality as they followed their dream of sharing their love of horses to assist those most in need of their help. While living in California, Dennis and Kathy began looking for a location to start their horse therapy ranch and eventually settled on the wooded mountains of Star Valley in Payson Arizona. The year-round cool weather, beautiful scenery, and nearby trails provided the perfect location for the Ranch to set down its roots. A key decision for the Dueker Ranch came early while Dennis was learning the power of horse therapy while working with children in California. Many families would show up one week for their important therapy sessions only to disappear for weeks on end before showing up again. Unfortunately, the success of the horse therapy programs was very much dependent on regular attendance with the horses. After a few conversations with the parents involved Dennis saw that for many of the families who needed horse therapy the most, paid lessons, even at $45.00 a week, were simply too much of an expense. It was at that point Dennis and Kathy decided that there had to be a better way to provide the help their clients needed. However to provide the proper care for their horses so they could provide care themselves is prohibitively expensive and was beyond Dennis and Kathy’s means. The solution to their problem came with the formation of the Dueker Ranch as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Corporation. As a non-profit, Dueker Ranch is dependent on the tax-free, tax-deductible, donations and contributions of individual and corporate donors to keep the ranch going and provide for the continued care of our special horses so that we can continue to provide life-changing horse therapy lessons to children and those in need. Mahara grew up in England and went to boarding school from the age of 10. From a very difficult childhood, she was propelled into the London of the ’70s. A year at art school and then a couple of years exploring the underbelly of London before being called to spend a year in India with Rajneesh and then 8 months in Oregon building the ‘new earth’. Since then she trained as a DOM and spent 7 years in practice before discovering frequency healing in the form of Quantum Biofeedback which she is still doing on a limited basis. She has also had periods of creating and selling art in the form of photography, ceramics, and digital images, with work currently shown in Sedona. She has trained horses, designed and built a house, studied with a Sufi Master, a Korean Taoist Yoga master, trained as a hypnotherapist in relation to the Enneagram, and trained in eye reading related to subconscious patterns inherited and acquired. About the title of this poem: The original image for the poem (and subsequent video poem) came during a group worship/ascension time in Prescott, AZ. I highly recommend stopping by and joining in with the wonderful people there at The House of Mercy if you are ever in the area! The vision of a giant girl joyously twirling in the sunshine catching butterflies was still in my mind as I left the worship and headed down to the center of town, called "Whiskey Row" by the locals. I wasnt planning on "tying one on" but did want to stretch my legs around the square a bit and see some sights on this beautiful sunny Sunday before the two hour drive back home. I am not too familiar with Prescott, so as I drove and spoke the poem into the audio recorder of my phone (which I often do), I was surprised to hear the GPS voice announce that I was driving down "Girley St." (spelled Gurley I later found out). I burst out laughing! God sure does have a sense of humor! I also knew instantly what the name of this poem would be. Thank you Jesus! LIfe with you is never boring! Jill Feldman is a lung cancer patient and advocate. When Jill was 13 years old, she lost her dad and two grandparents to lung cancer, and then her mom and close aunt died of lung cancer when she was in her 20’s. She became a volunteer, an advocate, and past president of LUNGevity Foundation before the unthinkable happened. In 2009, at 39 years old with four small children, Jill herself was diagnosed with EGFR positive lung cancer. Jill continues to be involved with LUNGevity. She is committed to understanding and promoting patient-centered research as a member of the programmatic panel for the Department of Defense Lung Cancer Re-search Program, as a member of the ECOG-ACRIN Research Group’s patient advocate committee, and thoracic committee. She is Chair of IASLC’s patient advisory board and co-founder of the EGFR Resisters, a grassroots, patient-driven community committed to accelerating research that will prolong and better the lives of people diagnosed with EG-FRm lung cancer. Jill also continues to share her story in the media and at various events and participates in countless advocacy opportunities to shine a light on lung cancer to end the stigma associated with it and to embed a health equity lens in all aspects of research and care. Sammie was born in Baton Rouge Louisiana. After moving back to Wyoming after high school, her son was tragically killed in an auto accident at the age of 21. Life was never the same. Her daughter and son and Sammie were extremely close and this devastated both of them. However, as a mom, she knew she had to stay strong and be there for my daughter as she was not going to survive this tragedy without her mom. Sixteen years later, she had an awakening, and for the next year and a half, she learned how to truly grieve and live again. She had always taken lots of photos from high school and all the way through her kids’ childhood but never considered it anything more than snapping family and/or landscape pictures. In the past 3 years, she has found her true love of being behind the lens. It is a form of meditation. She gets lost behind the lens for hours and days at a time. This medium has helped her to heal and continues to provide solace. “I get to practice and live this craft and hopefully capture a few great shots along the way that will touch someone who needs to see and feel the beauty that surrounds us,” says Sammie. Richard Leirer is one of the most experienced and accomplished Qigong teachers in the US. He has been a serious student and practitioner of the internal arts for over 49 years. He is considered by many to be one of the few American Qigong Masters. Richard began his training in 1972 with the American Kung Fu and Karate Federation with Kun Tao Master Guy Savelli. He later was accepted as a student with Master Huang, Tzeng-yu, Lee Henn, Master Hao Tian-Yao, Grand Master Hu Wei-yu, and was trained in the lineage of Grand Master Zhong, Hong Bao. He has been officially recognized as a Master by the Chinese Qigong Society of Cleveland for his excellence in Neigong (Taoist inner alchemy meditation techniques). He has studied in China and was certified as an instructor of Wu Ji Qigong by the late Master Zhu Wei from Tien Tai Mountain. Richard created Tai Chi and Qigong for stress recovery at the Cleveland VA hospital. He has also created programs for surgery rehabilitation at hospitals like the world-famous Cleveland Clinic.
