S4E149 Can We Homestead In Upstate New York And Still Follow The Mediterranean Diet?
For awhile, I really struggled with whether or not we could follow the Mediterranean Diet and still be homesteaders. After all, we don't live in the Mediterranean. And there are a lot of common ingredients to the Mediterranean Diet, that we cannot grow here in upstate NY.
A. We can't produce olive oil
B. We are 100s of miles away from the ocean and fresh seafood
C. We can't grow citrus, artichokes, olives, capers, figs and pomegranates, all things found in many Mediterranean diet dishes.
D. Because we have smaller acreage, we can't grow lots of whole grains or nuts.
But, eventually I realized that I was focused on the wrong things. Instead of being focused on what I COULD do, I was focused on what I COULDN'T do.
A. I can grow LOTS of vegetables.
B. I can grow LOTS of herbs.
C. I can raise a lot of meat.
D. Even Ma and Pa Ingalls bought stuff at the store.
E. The principles of the Mediterranean Diet are universal.

S3E138 Let the Weeds Grow.....
We arrived home yesterday from our vacation. And I found a very weedy garden waiting for me. At first I was very frustrated and upset over that. I felt inept as a gardener, a failure as a homesteader, a fraud as a homesteading content creator. But, then I remembered WHY the garden has weeds. And that change in perspective caused me to see the weeds in a way I never have.

S3E133 Three Ways We're Growing Potatoes On Our Homestead This Year
Because I primarily garden in raised beds that are about 10 to 12 inches deep until a couple of years ago, I had only tried growing potatoes once. A big part of the reason why I didn't try growing potatoes is because I thought you need a depth and a quality of soil that I don't have. Another part of the reason why I didn't grow potatoes is because I had only seen them grown in the very labor intensive "dig a ditch" and then "hill the crap" out of them before playing hide and go seek with the potatoes with a potato fork.
But, then I discovered the Ruth Stout method which I've used for the past 2 years. And this year I'm trying 2 more methods that are supposed to be much less work while still producing a good harvest.

S3E132 Why Garden?
I was recently interviewed for a magazine. As part of that interview, they asked that I also submit a video about 5 things I think someone needs to know in order to start a successful vegetable garden. While I don't want to spoil the entire thing, I did think it would be appropriate to offer up my introduction as kind of a teaser. So, enjoy. S3E128 Reframe Your Mind
Time, Money and Space. The lack of these are the biggest barriers to taking the next right step on our homesteading journey. But, maybe our issue isn't a lack of resources. Maybe it's because we're looking at things the wrong way. Today's episode is all about reframing our minds to get us to think about things differently.

S3E126 Go Big Or Go Home: A Really BAD Approach To Homesteading
"Go Big or Go Home"..... We use that phrase a lot (at least in the USA) as a means of encouraging people to dive headlong into things, with gusto and 100% commitment. On this episode we talk about 3 different posts I recently saw on FB homesteading groups that were indicative of that mentality and why I think it is a REALLY bad approach to homesteading.
