Older adults are challenged with aging-related declines in skeletal muscle mass (known as sarcopenia), muscle function and as result mobility. Although exercise interventions of longer duration typically yield larger changes, shorter-term interventions may kick-start positive effects, allowing participants to begin engaging in more activity. Doing his in a supportive group setting may also be more likely to allow long-term habits to form.
Stephen Ball, a professor of physical therapy at the University of Missouri has dedicated his career to improving the health of older people through exercise. He launched the University of Missouri's 'Stay Strong - Stay Healthy' strength training program, which has reached more than 20,000 older adults since its inception in 2005. For years, Professor Ball had anecdotally heard about the physical and mental health benefits that the older adults had experienced from the eight-week strength training program, but now there is scientific proof.
According to a recent research study, adults over the age of 60 who participated in the group exercise program experienced improved muscle strength and flexibility, balance and coordination, sleep quality and overall self-confidence to increase physical activity, all while reducing the risk of falling and the expensive medical bills that usually follow.
Professor Stephen Ball, a professor in the School of Health Professions, at Missouri University, and a Missouri state fitness specialist with the MU Extension said "This program embodies what MU is all about as a land-grant university. We give undergraduates valuable hands-on experience in teaching exercise, conduct life-changing research in the lab and then with our partnerships through MU Extension, we go out in rural communities and implement the research to improve the health of everyday people."
In the study, Professor Ball collaborated with the Missouri Orthopedic Institute to evaluate the effectiveness of the 'Stay Strong Stay Healthy' strength training program in a group setting among adults over the age of 60. Participants in the instructor-led courses, where they were taught how to safely complete strength training exercises, including squats and bicep curls. The sessions lasted one hour and were held twice a week for eight weeks. Tests for strength, balance and flexibility were conducted before and after the program.

Now, a new study proposes that adding a dash of milk that contains protein can boost the health benefits of your cup of coffee. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark examined how antioxidants called polyphenols interacted with amino acids, they are the building blocks of proteins, and found that combining them has twice the effect on fighting cellular inflammation as polyphenols alone. Polyphenols can be found in many foods, including coffee and tea, fruits, vegetables, red wine, and thankfully even beer. Like other antioxidants, past studies have shown that some polyphenols can prevent and slow the oxidation of healthy chemicals and protect our bodies from disease. Polyphenols are thought to do this in part by controlling inflammation, a complex immune response involving cells called macrophages that release several inflammatory mediators. Inflammation helps protect against us infection, but if it isn't controlled properly, it can lead to diseases like type 2 Diabetes, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's. Caffeic Acid (CA) and Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) are polyphenols that are well known to have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. But the researchers wanted to find out if the reactions that these polyphenols have, with other chemicals, can further affect immune regulation. Adducts are products that are made when two or more molecules come together. In this case, the amino acid Cysteine (Cys) that is found in milk products was combined with the Caffeic Acid (CA) and Chlorogenic Acid (GCA), both found in coffee, they were combined to make the adducts CA–Cys and CGA–Cys. To support this research, the authors positively showed, in a previous study, that polyphenols do bind to proteins in coffee that has had milk added to it.
Professor Marianne Nissen Lund from the University of Copenhagen and co-author of both studies I have referenced said "Our result demonstrates that the reaction between polyphenols and proteins also happens in some of the coffee drinks with milk that we studied. In fact, the reaction happens so quickly that it has been difficult to avoid in any of the foods that we've studied so far."
In this study, the researchers used RNA-sequencing to study the immune-regulating effects of CA–Cys and CGA–Cys in macrophage cells subjected to artificial inflammation.

As a methylated stilbene molecule, it has a similar structure to the antioxidant resveratrol. Pterostilbene and resveratrol share many of the same benefits, including fighting oxidative stress, but pterostilbene has been shown to have superior bioavailability. In other words, pterostilbene is believed to be absorbed and utilized by the body more easily than similar phytonutrients, which is one reason why it’s recently caught the attention of health researchers.
There’s evidence that pterostilbene has anti-inflammatory properties, it reduces oxidative stress, and it reduces the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which contributes to many chronic diseases. In animal studies, cells treated with pterostilbene have shown increased expression of the antioxidant’s Catalase, Total glutathione, Glutathione peroxidase, Glutathione reductase and Superoxide Dismutase. Like resveratrol, pterostilbene has been reported to have cancer-preventive properties.
In several clinical trials, it has been shown to be a natural anticancer agent due to its antioxidant and anti-neoplastic properties (antineoplastic means it acts to prevent, inhibit or halt the development of a neoplasm, or a tumor). Consuming pterostilbene helps lead to improved function of normal cells and inhibition of malignant cells. Some of the ways that it inhibits cancer growth is through the alteration of cancerous cell cycles, induction of apoptosis (that’s cell death), and inhibition of metastasis. A number of studies have found that blueberry extract containing pterostilbene can be especially helpful for preventing and treating breast cancer.

Beige is generally considered to be a calming color when it comes to materials or paint colors. And scientists have new evidence that beige fat has a similar impact on the brain, in that it brings down the inflammation associated with the more common white fat and provides protection from dementia. As well as beige fat and white fat, there is also brown fat, beige fat and brown fat are similar, but are not exactly the same.
These scientists found, and published in the Journal Nature Communications, that beige fat cells, which are typically intermingled with white fat cells, and are found in the subcutaneous fat present in "pear shaped" people, and that it facilitates subcutaneous fat's brain protection.
Generally, when it comes to fat distribution, there are 2 types of people.
• “Pear-shaped” people, whose weight is generally distributed more evenly around the body, and
• "Apple shaped" individuals are whose fat is clustered around their middle and often around their internal organs such as the liver in the abdominal cavity.
When compared to Apple shaped people, Pear Shaped people are considered less at risk for cardio-metabolic problems such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as cognitive decline.
Now these scientists have shown that beige fat cells, or adipocytes, are "indispensable" to the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of subcutaneous fat.

A study just released by the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health and the Peking University School of Public Health provides some of the first, large-scale evidence that some processes of biological aging may contribute to the risk of depression and anxiety. Until now nearly all work to date has focused on poor mental health as a risk factor for accelerated aging. A complementary, but less-studied hypothesis is that the reverse process may also occur, and accelerated processes of biological aging may, themselves, pose risks to depression/anxiety disorders in older adults. The researchers tested associations of blood-chemistry measures of biological aging with prevalent and incident depression and anxiety among a half-million midlife and older adults. The study used the UK Biobank, an ongoing study with 502,536 participants recruited between 2006 and 2010 with an age range of between 37 and 73; the study included multiple follow-ups. The findings showed that adults with more advanced biological age were more likely to experience depression and anxiety at baseline. These adults were also at higher risk of depression and/or anxiety over the eight-year follow-up period. This was when compared to peers who were the same chronological age, but who were tested to be biologically younger. At the 8.7 year-follow up point, participants with an older biological age were at a 6% increased risk of incident depression and/or anxiety.
Xu Gao, Ph.D., First Author of the study and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health Sciences, at the School of Public Health, Peking University said "Among older adults who were free of depression and/or anxiety at baseline, those whose blood indicated that they were biologically older than their chronological age were predicted as more likely to develop depression or anxiety over the follow-up compared with those whose blood indicated that they were biologically younger."
Depression and anxiety are common mental disorders that can very often co-occur, and are associated with increased disability and mortality, especially in older adults. It therefore follows that prevention of depression and anxiety in older adults has the potential to mitigate the burden of age-related diseases in an aging population.

Dr. David Sinclair | TIME100 Summit – When will you Start Human Trials? (Longevity)
Recently David Sinclair took part in the Time 100 Submit, in this clip David Sinclair was asked how confident he was what he has seen in his Lab animals can he successful in humans.

Discovered by David Sinclair PhD, NMN or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide is the pre-cursor to NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), NAD is found in nearly all our living cells. NAD is essential for sustaining life. Dr. David Sinclair (a professor at Harvard Medical School) once said if we suddenly didn’t have NAD we would be dead within eight seconds.’ Unfortunately, as we age our NAD levels drastically decline, clinical studies have shown that by age of 50 a typical person could have half the NAD+ they did in their youth and by the age of 80 our NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) levels drop to around 1% to 10% of those enjoyed in our youth. NAD is biologically unstable, which makes it unsuitable for oral supplementation. Fortunately, it is easy to restore our cellular NAD levels using NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) or NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), which convert to NAD when it is in the cell. These NAD boosting supplements can be purchased from reputable companies such as Do Not Age, Renue by Science and Pro-health Longevity, however there are many unscrupulous companies selling fake NMN, so buyer beware. Dr. David Sinclair confirms that a fascinating aspect of NAD+ is its dual role in protecting against factors that age us. This includes mitigating chemical stress, inflammation, DNA damage and failing mitochondria; all conditions associated with aging. In other words, while a decline in NAD+ levels may negatively influence lifespan and Healthspan (health-span), so restoring NAD+ is increasingly being viewed as a scientific way to promote longevity and a way to combat the diseases of aging too. A rigorous scientific review of NAD+ reveals that its longevity benefits arise from eight different, but interrelated, functions. In 2013 a scientific study; 2-year old mice were tested for muscle wastage, insulin resistance and inflammation, all are, on humans used as indicators of the aging process, they were then given NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) for 1 week. In all cases, after only 1 week the 2-year old mice were reflecting the expected findings of 6-month old mice in the areas of muscle wastage, insulin resistance and inflammation. In human terms that would be comparable to a 75-year old having the results you would expect from a 25-year old. In a later methodical study, in 2018, again on mice, Dr. David Sinclair’s team at the Harvard Medical School found that the aging of blood vessels had been reversed. The science showed that mice that were given NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) had restored blood vessel growth and had increased muscle endurance by up to 80%. Supplementation with NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) and NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) has been shown to slow cellular aging in mice and improve many metabolic defects common to degenerative processes, including muscle wastage, insulin resistance and inflammation. Nicotinamide mononucleotide ("NMN", "NAMN", and "β-NMN") is a nucleotide derived from ribose and nicotinamide.

This week's the company selling NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is Alpha Cell Labs, and they operate out of Australia. How long have Alpha Cell Labs NMN been trading? Well according to https://www.name.com/whois-lookup, the site has been up since July 2021. Alpha Cell Labs address is: 305/88 Alfred St, Milsons Point, NSW 2061, Australia, so they say they are a laboratory and their NMN is made in Australia, this is 88 Alfred Street – looks like a residential building to me, and I’m guessing they live at apartment 305.
Moving onto cost, let’s look at the Alpha Cell Labs 60 capsules jar. 60 x 500mg capsules is 30 grams, you can see here that the reduced price from $256 AUD to $176 AUD - 176 divided by 30 is $5.56, the graphic shows $5.23, that’s just sloppy and unprofessional. You can see it also reads $157 for free shipping, but the price is $167, someone needs to start proof reading.
So, $5.56 AUD works out at around $3.70 USD a gram, a similar amount from:
• Renue by Science, for 240 x 125 mg (so exactly the same, 30 grams) with the 10% MYNMN discount will cost you $2.06 per gram, from
• DoNotAge, 60 x 500mg (again exactly the same, 30 grams) with the 10% MYNMN discount will cost you $2.91 per gram
• Youth & Earth, 60 x 125mg (so you will need 4 jars) with the 15% discount code will cost you $3.82 per gram, and even from
• ProHealth, 60 x 1 gram caps, with their 15% MYNMN discount it will cost you $3.11 a gram
Renue by Science, as the cheapest, is $1.64 a gram cheaper than Alpha Cell Labs – if you take 1 gram a day, that is $49.30 USD a month cheaper. When you convert the $9.99 AUD to USD they say other companies charge $6.75 USD a gram.

It looks as though a few pinches of herbs and spices could possibly give your gut a healthy boost, according to two separate studies from Penn State University in the US. There are trillions of individual microorganisms living in the human stomach and intestines, comprising of hundreds to thousands of species of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Collectively, they are known as the gut microbiome, and their importance is so great to our health, scientists think of it as a major supporting organ – indeed some have called the small intestine the second brain. Diet, exercise, medication and supplementation are just some of the factors that can influence the makeup of a person's gut, which means each individual's gut community is unique. If your gut microbiome isn't fed and suitably nurtured, harmful microbes can proliferate, while symbiotic ones have more trouble with tasks such as dealing with our immune system and breaking down our food. Scientists are still trying to figure out what features mark the healthiest gut communities, but as research progresses, they are starting to get a better idea. Penny M. Kris-Etherton PhD, and Distinguished Professor of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University said "Research has shown that people who have a lot of different microbes have better health, and a better diet, than those who don't have much bacterial diversity."
While we commonly think of our diet in terms of the basics, such as greens and meats, a considerable amount of variation in our cultural, and personal preferences, comes down to the way we add some zing to our meals. Professor Kris-Etherton and her colleagues at Penn State are among the first in the world to study the effect of herbs and spices on the composition of the human gut microbiome.

Latest Research: This Fasting Diet Destroys Bone Density & Lean Mass!
a piece I recently read, published in April of 2023, cast some doubt on a very popular time restricted feeding diet, the diet in question is one that I am currently following, hence my interest.

The author, Amanda Avery, starts the piece by writing “One of the latest trends among celebrities is the "one meal a day" diet (or "OMAD").
Fans of OMAD include Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay front-man Chris Martin. Many proponents of OMAD claim it helps them better manage their weight and keep fit.” Although a fad in the affluent West, it is, in many parts of the world, as a result of poverty, an unescapable way of life. But, is it as healthy as many self-proclaimed health and lifestyle experts would have you believe?
OMAD is essentially a more extreme version of other types of fasting diets, such as intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating. The main difference is that instead of only fasting on certain days, or only eating your meals during a specific time window, people following OMAD eat all their day's calories in one single, large meal. But while supporters of OMAD say that following the diet improves many aspects of health, we actually know very little about what effect eating just one meal a day has on the body – let alone if it's safe. Evidence supporting the use of OMAD is limited. Very few studies have actually looked at OMAD itself – and most of those that have were conducted in animals. As such, most of the claims that OMAD works are anecdotal, or they assume that if other forms of fasting can benefit health, then OMAD will too. Research into fasting diets is still emerging, some evidence indicates that one form of intermittent fasting known as the "5:2 diet" may help people better manage their weight. 5:2 is where a person eats normally five days a week (normally being not in a caloric deficit), then 800 calories or less two days a week). However, the author believes this diet is no better than other dietary approaches. Research has also found that time-restricted eating (where you eat all your day's calories within a specific window of time) can help people better manage their weight. This intermittent fasting approach has other health benefits too, such as lowering blood pressure. One review study found that many different types of fasting (including intermittent fasting and fasting every other day) can improve several aspects of metabolism. These include improving blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reducing inflammation levels, and helping people better regulate their appetite. This, in turn, may help reduce a person's risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
To date, only one study has looked at the effect of eating one meal a day in humans. In this study, the 11 participants (5 men and 6 women) were given the same number of calories to eat each day for the study's duration, the study lasted for 11 days.

Dr. David Sinclair | TIME100 Summit – Updates on Latest Protocols 2023 – NOT a VEGAN! (Longevity)
Recently David Sinclair took part in the Time 100 Submit, in this clip David Sinclair was asked what were his latest Longevity/Anti-aging protocols.

The word "brainwashing" usually triggers negative associations. But our continued brain health depends on this vital process. Scientists at the University of Oslo recently made new and important discoveries about how and why this cleaning happens when we are sleeping. The blood vessels in the brain constrict and dilate in certain patterns while we sleep, and this is one of the key mechanisms that drives the clearance of harmful waste products from our brain.
Rune Enger, the last author of this latest study, and an Associate Professor from the Letten Centre at the University of Oslo said "Our discoveries can help us find new ways to treat or even prevent Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. These findings can also help to create strategies to deliver drugs to the brain more efficiently."
"Brainwashing" or “brain waste clearance” is a process of removing harmful waste products from the brain. The brain, as it works throughout the day, continually producing waste matter, these materials include proteins called Beta-amyloid and Tau, and if too many of them accumulate, it raises the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
The blood vessels in our brain dilate and constrict in specific patterns as we sleep. Waste products from the brain are cleared along specialized tunnels around the brain blood vessels. This movement of the blood vessels could affect this process. The researchers examined what was going on in the brains of sleeping mice using an advanced laser microscope.
They discovered that the blood vessels in the brain, specifically the arteries, dilated and constricted in certain patterns while the mice were sleeping. These movements were not observed in mice that were awake.
Until now, it was believed that it was only deep sleep that was involved in this cleansing of waste products. However, in this study, the researchers observed something striking. The blood vessels in the brain constricted and dilated in patterns unique to each sleep stage of the entire sleep cycle, including deep sleep, REM sleep and even the brief awakenings that pepper our nightly sleep, and are a natural part of our sleep cycle.
During deep sleep the arteries slowly dilated and constricted, but as the transition to REM sleep occurred, these became smaller while the artery slowly dilated. During REM sleep arteries stayed dilated before quickly constricting at the end of a sleep cycle to the same size as before falling asleep. the constrictions also happen during the brief awakenings experienced during sleep.

Many people talk about the heart-health benefits of adopting a Mediterranean-style diet, with its focus on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish and healthy oils. But what about the rest of the Mediterranean lifestyle, does the lifestyle also contribute to an individual’s longevity? The author writes “Short of lounging on the beaches of southern Italy or an island in Greece, could adopting the focus on relaxed, family dining, afternoon naps and strong communal bonds also improve health?”
A group of researchers explored what would happen if middle-aged and older British adults—who live about 1,500 miles northwest of the Mediterranean Sea adopted its convivial way of life - not just the diet but also the physical activity and the social habits of their southern neighbors. They found that the more they adhered to the Mediterranean lifestyle, the lower their risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease and other health conditions.
Mercedes Sotos-Prieto, the study's senior researcher and an Assistant Professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, who is also an Adjunct Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston said "This study suggests that adopting a Mediterranean lifestyle adapted to the local characteristics of non-Mediterranean populations is possible and can be part of a healthy lifestyle."
Prior research has shown that Mediterranean-style eating patterns help to protect against cardiovascular disease, lowering the risk for heart attacks and strokes. In this latest study, the researchers analyzed the impact of other Mediterranean lifestyle factors, which included physical activity, rest, social habits and conviviality. There were 110,799 middle-aged and older adults who lived in England, Scotland and Wales. A 25-point MEDLIFE index was used to score their adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle.
The index was broken down into three blocks:
• Mediterranean food consumption (12 points), which looked at what they ate.
• Mediterranean dietary habits (7 points), which looked at additional factors such as whether they snacked, added salt to their meals or preferred whole grains to refined grains, and
• And the final block was other lifestyle factors (6 points)

New Research: Slow Aging by Modifying Genes
A new study out of Northwestern University has shown that as we age the length of our genes changes and drive the aging process, but can this process now be altered with therapeutics?

Northwestern University researchers have discovered a previously unknown mechanism that drives the aging process. In this new study the researchers used artificial intelligence to analyze data from a wide variety of tissues, collected from humans, mice, rats and killifish.
They discovered that the length of genes can explain most molecular-level changes that occur during the aging process. All cells must balance the activity of both long and short genes. The researchers found that longer genes are linked to longer lifespans, and shorter genes are linked to shorter lifespans. They also found that aging genes change their activity according to their length. More specifically, aging is accompanied by a shift in activity towards short genes; this shift causes gene activity in the cells to become unbalanced. This shift in gene activity and the subsequent unbalance was found to be near universal. The researchers uncovered this pattern across several animals, including humans, and across many different tissues types, including blood, muscle, bone - and organs including the liver, heart, intestines, the brain and the lungs. This new finding could potentially could lead to interventions designed to slow the pace of, or even reverse aging.
Thomas Stoeger PhD, who led the study from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University, said "The changes in the activity of genes are very, very small, and these small changes involve thousands of genes. We found this change was consistent across different tissues and in different animals. We found it almost everywhere.
I find it very elegant that a single, relatively concise principle seems to account for nearly all of the changes in activity of genes that happen in animals as they age."
Luís A.N. Amaral, Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University, and senior author of the study said "The imbalance of genes causes aging because cells and organisms work to remain balanced, what physicians denote as homeostasis. Imagine a waiter carrying a big tray. That tray needs to have everything balanced. If the tray is not balanced, then the waiter needs to put in extra effort to fight the imbalance. If the balance in the activity of short and long genes shifts in an organism, the same thing happens. It's like aging is this subtle imbalance, away from equilibrium. Small changes in genes do not seem like a big deal, but these subtle changes are bearing down on you, requiring more effort."

this week the company selling NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is Moleqlar. Let’s look at the Moleqlar NMN product, Moleqlar only sell NMN powder, which they source from Uthever. Two pictures of the 100 gram bag of Moleqlar NMN, but unfortunately you cannot see the back of the bag. If you scroll down there is plenty of information on NMN, under “Fields of Application” this caught my eye, it states that
“According to German and European Law, (I think they mean EU Law) NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a chemical that is not suitable for human consumption. It is therefore only used for studies, research purposes and laboratory tests in the life science sector.”
I wonder how they, and many other European companies, can sell it to individuals for personal consumption. Let me know if you understand this statement. They have this statement that states learn more in our safety data sheet, but the link takes you to the UTHEVER safety data sheet, nothing to do with EU or German Law. (https://www.moleqlar.de/en/produkt/uthever-nmn/)
Moving onto cost, let’s stick with the Moleqlar NMN Powder, 100 grams will cost you 169 Euros, that’s around $185.90 USD. That works out at $1.85 a gram, a similar amount (100 grams) from:
• Renue by Science with the 10% MYNMN discount will cost you $0.89 per gram, from
• DoNotAge with the 10% MYNMN discount will cost you $1.05 per gram, and even from
• ProHealth, historically the most expensive, with their 15% MYNMN discount it will cost you $1.30 a gram – so 55 cents a gram cheaper
Renue by Science, as the cheapest, is $0.96 a gram cheaper than Moleqlar – if you take 1 gram a day - that is $28.80 a month cheaper, and it’s exactly the same Uthever NMN as DoNotAge, but is $0.80 a gram more expensive.
Moving onto the Moleqlar Resveratrol Powder, 100 grams of Moleqlar Resveratrol will cost you 90 Euros, that’s around $100 USD, that works out at $1.00 a gram, from:
• Renue by Science with the 10% MYNMN discount it will cost you $0.84 per gram, from
• DoNotAge with the 10% MYNMN discount will cost you $0.94 per gram, and even from
• ProHealth, with their 15% MYNMN discount it will cost you only $0.72 a gram – so 28 cents a gram cheaper.
If like David Sinclair you take 1 gram a day, ProHealth is the cheapest by $8.40 a month.
#ProHealthLongevity #DoNotAge #RenueByScience
Do you agree with this score for Moleqlar NMN? Would I buy from this company? Probably not, they are students, the products are expensive and incomplete 3rd party test certificates. As always, this is only my opinion of Moleqlar; you are free to agree with me or ignore me 100%. Let me know what you think about this company would you buy from Moleqlar?

When it comes to exercise, an approach that's able to achieve the same results with less effort sounds too good to be true – but that's what researchers have discovered in an analysis of exercise techniques and the subsequent changes in muscle strength and size. This latest study looked at three different types of dumbbell curl exercise:
Concentric (lifting weights, which in turn shortens the muscle), and
Eccentric (lowering weights, and therefore lengthening the muscle), and
Both concentric and eccentric together (alternately lifting and then lowering weights in the same exercise). While all these exercises improved concentric strength (that’s lifting), only the eccentric (that’s 002 lowering) and the concentric-eccentric (003 both up and down) exercises improved eccentric (lowering) and isometric (that’s static) strength.
What's more, the improvements in the group doing lifting-and-lowering exercises were about the same as those in the group doing lowering exercises only – or half as many reps.
Professor Ken Nosaka, Director of Exercise and Sports Science at the Edith Cowan University in Australia said "This latest study shows we can be far more efficient in the time we spend exercising and still see significant results by focusing on eccentric muscle contractions.
In the case of a dumbbell curl, many people may believe the lifting action provides the most benefit, or at least some benefit, but we found concentric muscle contractions contributed little to the training effects."
In other words, the eccentric muscle actions achieve the same results as the concentric-eccentric exercises, even though the technique takes half the time. The eccentric-only exercises (that’s lowering only) also scored highest in terms of muscle thickening. The results were based on four groups of people:
• 14 people doing concentric exercises,
• 14 people doing eccentric exercises,
• 14 people doing concentric-eccentric exercises, and
The exercise routines were carried out twice a week for five weeks, with 3 sets of 10 repetitions each time. And there was a control group of 11 people who did not do any exercise at all. Based on the results, the researchers suggest using two hands to lift weights up into position before switching to one hand for eccentric (lowering) actions in exercises such as bicep curls and overhead extensions. The study authors say the same principles should also extend to leg exercises.
Professor Ken Nosaka said "We already know only one eccentric muscle contraction a day can increase muscle strength - if it is performed five days a week – even if it's only 3 seconds a day – but concentric or isometric muscle contraction does not provide such an effect."
