Desert Highways

A few minutes over the California border back into Arizona heading back to Phoenix.

I love how the landscape keeps changing as I go further west.

Bored and talking about all the billboards I've seen on this trip.

And my ears popped again.

I started up in Flagstaff, AZ @ 6900FT above sea level. Phoenix is about 1000FT above sea level and I will be there in an hour and a half. All down hill from here.

It's so interesting how the landscape slowly morphs from desert to forest.

I am going past the town so I can get to Phoenix, but I wanted to show you how the landscape slowly changes from desert scrub brush to the beginnings of a pine forest.

Between New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona heading west on I40.

And the wow views just keep coming.

I just left Grants NM where I had spent the night in one a few remaining hotels in that old town. I guess Grants used to be a hot spot back in the Route 66 heydays. It was a town in the middle of nowhere right off the highway for travelers to stop and eat, gas up or get a hotel room and spend their money in the town. I wish I had taken video of the town, though there really was much left of it. The old buildings was falling apart. I saw a bunch of old motels, restaurants, and other buildings just left to rot with sunken roofs and broken windows the norm in all of them. The town likely died soon after RT 66 did.

Nothing to see here but the never ending highway stretching out into the distance. I need a corndog.

Just chugging along through the Lone Star State being constantly amazed at the changing landscape and how huge it is.

Wow. The amount of open space out here is as amazing as it is beautiful.

Just looking for someplace out of the way to write my name with a Sharpie so it won't get painted over in 2 minutes. I found one ;)

I have been hearing about the Cadillac Ranch for ever so I was excited to be close enough to check it out on my trip cross country. I'd not looked up pics or videos online before I went. I wanted to see it for the first time in person. It is interesting for sure, but I had always read that it was a place that had been set up by artists where anyone can go there and spray paint some art onto the cars. I did not find any art. Just people and kids spewing can after can of spray paint onto the cars and into the air. It's not quite what I expected to find, but I'm still glad I stopped to see it.

Some clouds and a light sprinkle as I cross into TX from OK. Since I left MA I've seen no shortage of dead things roadside, even armadillos, but this was my first goat.
