Predicting Canada's Population in 2050
I am available to speak for your organization or event. Please contact me via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonpadfield/
Also, if you would be interested in taking an online data analytics course with me, please leave a comment in this video or contact me via the link above and if there is enough interest, I will make a course available.
In this video I discuss the art and science of using data to predict the future. We can analyze historic data to identify trends (that is the science part) but we never know how long those trends will endure before something causes them to stop or possibly even reverse (that is the dark art part). I use the example of predicting Canada's population in 2050 in this video which seems simple enough - take the current population + births + immigration - deaths - emigration.
However, in 2019 the United Nations predicted the Canadian death rate through 2100. Within just 3 years (2022) their prediction was off by 20.1% as Canada (like much of the world) has been experiencing double digit "excess deaths" since 2020. The bottom line is, in the words of the late British statistician George Box, "All models are wrong, but some are useful." We have to be careful about putting too much faith in models, because the only thing we know for certain is "all models are wrong" even though "some are useful."

Big Tech's Contribution to Global Unhappiness (2023)
I am available to speak for your organization or event. Please contact me via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonpadfield/
Every year since 2006, Gallup has interviewed around 150,000 people across 142 countries and ask them about their level of happiness. The global scores were very consistent from 2006 to 2011 but over the past 12 years, the world has become a much less happy place.
This video analyzes the Gallup data and explores the contribution of Big Tech to the rising levels of global unhappiness.

Farcical "Research" Repeatedly Gets Through Peer Review Process
I am available to speak for your organization or event. Please contact me via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonpadfield/
In this video I discuss a series of 7 completely ridiculous, fake "research papers" that were peer reviewed and accepted for publication in academic journals. The 3 academics who wrote these papers did it to prove the point that papers which support popular narratives and "reach the right conclusions" can be published no matter how shoddy and ludicrous the research methodology was.
From "Fat Body Building" to "Rape Culture in Urban Dog Parks" to plagiarizing Adolph Hitler's Mein Kampf and updating it with "fashionable buzzwords", these academics illustrated the problems with today's peer review process in cultural studies journals.

Is Global Warming Really a Hoax?
This is my second video addressing the subject of climate change. In this video I discuss the range of views on climate change from people who do not believe the earth is warming, to those who believe it is but it's a natural phenomenon, to those who believe the warming is man-made but not a serious threat, to those who believe it is an immediate and existential threat. I also discuss how the media tends to categorize everyone into two sides: Climate Activists or Climate Change Deniers.
I believe this oversimplification of a complex issue is leading to some people being demonized and others being radicalized as a growing number of people around the world are vandalizing museums, historic fountains, blocking traffic, vandalizing SUVs, and even storming runways to shut down airports all in the name of "saving the planet."

Is 2030 Really the End of the World?
This is my first video addressing the subject of climate change. In this video I discuss the origins of the often repeated but never cited idea that 2030 is the magic tipping point beyond which all hope is lost.
Many politicians, celebrities and other climate activists claim "climate scientists tell us we only have 12 years (ending in 2030) to save the planet". However, the actual scientists who wrote the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change report specifically say that is not the case. This video quotes the actual scientists themselves as reported in mainstream media outlets (AP, Washington Post, and Axios) with links provided below.
Special thanks to Reason who compiled some of the information I cite in this video.

Was ESG Behind the Bud Light Controversy?
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) is a concept for scoring companies on criteria other than fiscal performance. However, this is not just a consumer facing "nutrition label". It is now being used to direct investments which puts companies with a low ESG score at a financial disadvantage. What does it take for a company to raise their ESG score? In theory it just requires good environmental, social and governance practices.
But the definition of "good" is in the eye of the beholder and appears to be poorly defined. A Forbes article speculated that Anheuser-Busch entered into a partnership with Dylan Mulvaney in an attempt to boost their Corporate Equality Index (CEI) which would likely increase their ESG rating.

Pseudo Science in the Courtroom: Bullet Lead Analysis
The FBI crime lab in Quantico conducted bullet lead analysis for federal, state, local and foreign law enforcement agencies from the early 1980s to 2005 in over 2,500 criminal cases. They claimed to be able to match a bullet recovered from a crime scene to the exact box of ammunition from which the bullet originated. However, the technique was never scientifically tested until 1998 when the former chief metallurgist for the FBI retired and conducted his own tests. In 2002, the National Academies of Sciences evaluated the technique and found it to be unreliable. In 2005, the FBI issued a press release announcing they would no longer conduct bullet lead analysis. However, as of 2007, hundreds of people in the United States remained incarcerated on convictions based on this debunked forensics technique.

Why Science is Broken - When Science and Religion Trade Places
Pew Research Center has been documenting American's declining confidence in scientists in general and medical scientists in particular. In this first video in my series on "Why Science is Broken", I discuss the traits of Science and Religion and how over the past few years, public health "experts" have been acting more like religious leaders than traditional scientists. Real science follows the scientific method which relies on asking questions, and transparency around sharing data, analysis, and publication of results. Real science welcomes debate. In contrast, many religions equate questioning authority with heresy and feel the need to persecute "heretics".
In 1633 Galileo was placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life for holding unacceptable view and spreading disinformation such as the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun.
Over the past few years, Real Science has been twisted into a State religion where supreme authorities issue proclamations that people are punished for questioning.

Smart speaker companies often claim their devices ONLY listen for their name. However, my personal experience a few years ago with an Amazon Echo contradicts that claim. That was the day I purged my home of all 4 Amazon Echo devices I had at the time.

Was Twitter the US Government's TIkTok? #shorts
Bi-partisan legislation has been introduced in Congress to completely ban TikTok following FBI Director Christopher Wray's testimony that the Chinese Government could use TikTok to conduct "influence operations" on the American public.
However, the "Twitter Files" released by Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, reveal that the United States government has been colluding with Twitter for years to suppress non-threatening political jokes and memes, a politically charged New York Post story prior to the 2016 election, and legitimate questions and concerns from medical doctors regarding mandated medications, mask requirements and lockdown orders.
Other Twitter Files reveal that the Twitter cooperated with U.S. Central Command to conduct influence operations in several Middle Eastern countries.

Why is Location Data is Such a Big Deal? #shorts
Everyone knows Google tracks them online, so why is it such a big deal that Google was tracking people's physical locations without user's knowledge or consent?
You can learn a lot of very personal things about a person based on knowing their location 24/7. Where they live, where they work, who's houses they visit, have they attended a protest, do they attend religious services and if so, what religion? Has a woman visited a women's shelter or an abortion clinic. Has a person spent time in a hospital or gone to a specialist's office?
Today law enforcement will ask Google for "geofencing data" meaning, "tell us the names and personal information of the owner of every phone that was within 200 yards of a certain place during a certain window of time when a crime is thought to have been committed. Every person who was in the area is a potential suspect.

Why Has Google Paid $497,000,000 (so far) in Privacy Lawsuits?
Over the past 2 months, Google has settled location tracking privacy lawsuits with 42 states for a total of $497 million. There have been 3 other lawsuits filed by Texas, Washington State and Washington DC that have not yet been settled.
Google was caught tracking and logging user's physical location even after users turned off location tracking in the settings on their phones.
While $497 million dollars may sound like a lot of money, it only represents about 0.25% of Google's annual ad revenue making it essentially a rounding error on Google's profit and loss statement.

The Minerva Initiative and the Weaponization of Information: What you Need to Know #shorts
Since 2008, the U.S. Department of Defense has funded research into the use of information / social media for strategic influence campaigns. The program, called "The Minerva Research Initiative" was a "DoD sponsored, University Based, Social Science Research Program".
The research performed under this program may be a driving force behind the renewed push to ban TikTok in the United States and it has striking parallels to new revelations about coordination between the United States Government and Twitter that have recently come to light in the Twitter Files.

Most modern color printers embed nearly invisible, faint yellow "forensic tracking dots" on every page printed. These dots can be used to determine the make, model, and serial number of the printer that printed the page along with the date and time it was printed. While this secret tracking method has advantageous for law enforcement tracking down threatening letters or illegal content, it also poses serious risks to whistle blowers, activist and journalists in authoritarian regimes.
