Most of us, don’t. At least, not initially. We grieve, obsess, reminisce, and ruminate. These all have their place, but there comes a time to ask what good things could come from this unfortunate circumstance.
But most of us don’t get taught essential life skills like this. Here are 5 ways to make the best of a negative situation:
1. Look for the lesson.
2. Study and develop coping skills particular to your situation.
3. Focus on healthy habits.
4. Allow yourself to be sad, but not all the time. Practice gratitude to draw you out of your sadness at least once a day.
5. Explore what new people and possibilities this situation will open your life to.
Most of the time we don’t see most of the possibilities before us. This is uniquely true when life deals us an unexpected blow. Open yourself to new possibilities.”

1. Be mindful when you are stressed, anxious, or over-tired, and learn ways to manage these states.

“You have to break through resistance in order to accomplish even the smallest tasks. I catch myself in a battle with resistance many times a day.
Here’s a simple example: I sit down to write, but instead I start checking my e-mail or thinking about what snacks will be required to write something great. This is resistance at work. Sure, I am an accomplished author and have written thirty books that have sold millions of copies, but just like every college student who sits down to write a paper, I will have to slay resistance in order to even get started. The thing about resistance is that it is so simple, so ordinary— and so paralyzing if we are not mindful of it.
This is why most people who start writing a book never finish it. We all know people who are writing a book. I get requests from people all the time to help them get the book they are writing published. They are very keen to speak about the publishing process right now. I always say to them, “Focus first on writing your book. When your manuscript is finished and ready for a professional editor to look at, send me a copy, and then we can talk about publishing options.” More than 95 percent of them I never hear from again. Resistance gets the better of them.
Imagine all the books that are unwritten because of resistance. I wonder if Mozart or Beethoven had an unwritten symphony, or if Picasso and Monet died with their greatest work inside them because of resistance. I wonder how many diseases have not been cured because resistance got between the scientist and the cure. I wonder how many things never got invented because inventors succumbed to resistance. How many men and women don’t have fabulous relationships because of resistance? Resistance is a slayer of dreams.
Looking back on today, where did you encounter resistance? It was there, wasn’t it? In fact, if you really sat down and analyzed your day, you would discover that many times throughout the day you were in a tussle with resistance.
We all battle resistance daily. The first step is to simply give resistance a name. Once you name it, you see it differently. Things that we cannot name tend to build in mystery and become dangerous. Simply naming, defining, and learning to recognize resistance in the moments of our days causes it to lose most of its power over us. It is no longer a mystery because we have named it.
The first lesson when it comes to resistance is that you never defeat it once and for all. It is a daily battle.

It’s the desire and tendency to delay something you should be doing right now.

“We all lose perspective on life from time to time. When that happens, it’s important to step back from who we are, where we are, and what we are doing, and take another look. Here are three questions to help you do that:
1. You get a call from an attorney tomorrow who tells you about a relative you never knew you had who has died and left you $100 billion dollars. If you knew you would never have to worry about money, what would you do with the rest of your life and what would you do with the money?
2. You go to the doctor tomorrow, she does some tests, comes back and says, “I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is you are going to feel perfectly healthy until the moment you die. The bad news is five years from today you are going to die.” If you knew you only had five years to live, what would do over the next five years?
3. Now question three sounds a lot like question number two, but it’s different. You go to the doctor tomorrow, he does some tests, comes back and says, “I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is you are going to feel perfectly healthy until the moment you die. The bad news is, you are going to die right now.” If you died right now, what would you never get to do that’s important to you?
Most people spend more time thinking about their annual vacation than they do thinking about their life. When was the last time you sat down and really thought about the life you want? It is too easy to let another week, month, year slip by without really thinking about it. It‘s too easy to just let life happen to us. You don’t have to settle for the life you stumbled into.”

“Satisfaction is a beautiful thing, but so is dissatisfaction if we pay attention to it, because it will lead us to satisfaction.
How satisfied are you with your personal life? Give yourself a score between one and ten in your mind. Now let’s look at your professional life. How satisfied are you with your professional life? Give yourself a score between one and ten.
Now add the scores together and divide by two, and that is your satisfaction score. If you gave yourself a score of 7 for personal satisfaction and 5 for professional satisfaction, you overall satisfaction score is 6.
Get yourself a notebook and give yourself a score once a week for personal satisfaction, professional satisfaction, and overall satisfaction.
What will happen? First, you will become more satisfied in both areas of your life. Just measuring your satisfaction will drive greater intentionality and that will give birth to greater satisfaction. The other thing that will happen is, you will be aware when your satisfaction begins to drop, and you will know what is causing it.
We all want to live deeply satisfying lives. The first step is to measure our current satisfaction. The second step is to do things that drive greater satisfaction in our lives. The third step is to be aware of when dissatisfaction is creeping into our lives so that we can address it quickly, rather than letting it fester.

“The work-life balance discussion was doomed from the start. Why? Because the concept itself is fatally flawed. Why? Because your work is part of your life. A big part of your life. In fact, we tend to spend more time working each day than we spend doing anything else.
So, when companies started asking employees if they had work-life balance, they were essentially saying, “You’re work isn’t part of your life, and you spend more time working than anything else, how do you feel about that?” No surprise that people didn’t feel great about that.
You cannot separate work from life. They are intimately linked. If you have a great day at work, you bring that energy home with you. If you are experiencing stress in your personal life, you bring that stress to work with you.
Work-life balance is a myth. Next time you think you want it, drill down a little deeper, and work out what it is that you really want.”

“We know what will make us happy. We may tell ourselves that we don’t know or that it is a mystery, but that’s not true.
There are four aspects to the human person: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.
Physically. If you eat the right sorts of food, and your sleep regularly, and you exercise regularly, how do you feel? You feel great. You feel more fully alive. You’re healthier and you’re happier.
Emotionally. When you give focus to your relationships, how do you feel? You feel great.
You switch your focus off self to others and what happens? You feel more fully alive, you increase your ability to love and as your ability to love increases your ability to be loved increases.
Intellectually. You take 10 or 15 minutes a day to read a great book. What happens? You feel more fully alive, your vision of yourself expands, your vision of the world expands, and you’re happier.

You are on a quest for happiness. We often pretend we don’t know what will make us happy, but it’s not true either/ the truth is, you know exactly what will make you happy.

The heart of a lion is confident and capable, without being aggressive. The mere presence of a lion commands respect.
The heart of a lion doesn’t make excuses or quit at the first obstacle.
The lionhearted are willing to fight. Not for sport or ego, but out of necessity. They fight for their children, spouse, family, career, community and dreams.
The heart of a lion honors the soul of the women in his life.
The heart of a lion is wholehearted. There are no half measures.
When was the last time you did something wholeheartedly? When is the last time you gave you whole effort to something? What would happen if you gave yourself whole-heartedly to your marriage, family, health, career? Which area of your life is desperately in need of your wholehearted attention?

“I have seven brothers: Mark, Simon, Andrew, Brett, Nathan, Bernard, and Hamish. Growing up in Australia, all we did was play sports. What sports? Any sport. Football, cricket, tennis, soccer, swimming, running, basketball, volleyball, golf, table tennis, cycling—you name it, we probably gave it a try. Were we competitive? Yes, we were. Ultracompetitive.
My father loved sports and one of his favorite things to do was watch his sons play. I believe it gave him a tremendous sense of pride and filled him with great joy to watch his boys out there competing.
I began playing competitive sports when I was five years old. Every time I went to training and every time I went to a game, my dad said the very same thing to me: “Matthew, listen to your coach!” Every time. He never forgot. If he was traveling, he would call me on the phone sometimes before a game to wish me well, and to remind me to listen to my coach.
When I was about sixteen years old, he was dropping me off for a soccer game while he went to park the car. As I walked away from the car, he put down the window and said, “Matthew, don’t forget—” I turned around, interrupted him, and said, “I got it, Dad—listen to my coach, listen to my coach!”
A few weeks later, Dad and I were talking, and I asked him, “Dad, why do you always say, ‘Listen to your coach’?”
He didn’t miss a beat. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “Because nobody achieves excellence at anything without coaching.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“You can get good at something just by working hard at it. If you’ve got some talent and you work hard at it, you can get really, really good at it. But excellence, peak performance, being the best you can be at something—that doesn’t happen without coaching.”
My father was a student of excellence. He loved excellence, wherever it could be found. He would point it out to us, in business, in sports, in the arts, in politics, spiritually and academically. He was a student of excellence and he taught us to be students of excellence too.
So, I’ve got two questions for you: What do you want to be excellent at? and Who is your coach?
Nobody achieves excellence at anything without coaching.”

“Even at the highest levels of competitive sports you see world-class athletes choke. Growing up I watched Greg Norman choke over and over again, but never more spectacularly than at the 1996 Masters when he squandered a six stroke lead and managed to lose by 5 shots to Nick Faldo.
20 years later, Jordan Speith suffered a similar fate at Augusta, when he inexplicably quadruple-bogeyed the 12th hole in the final round.
It happens in golf, but it also happens in basketball, football, baseball, hockey, and tennis. It happens in every sport, in fact, it happens in every arena of life.
AC Milan disintegrated before fans eyes in the 2005 European Cup Final. Leading 3- Nil, Liverpool scored three times in five minutes and won on penalties.
The biggest choke in NBA history was by the Golden State Warriors, who entered the 2016 NBA Finals as favorites after winning a mind blowing and record setting 73 games during the regular season. They won the first two games of the finals, lead three/one after four games, and proceeded to implode and loose to the Cavaliers.
In the NFL, the Falcons 2017 self-inflicted demise is unmatched. They squandered a 25 point third-quarter lead to lose Superbowl LI to the Patriots.
Anything can happen on the golf course, football field, basketball court, and soccer field, because anything can happen in our minds. It’s the challenges from within that are often the most difficult in life. HeadTrash is the fiercest opponent any competitive sports person has ever faced.
When the best in the world choke, people don’t wonder, why did he do that or why didn’t she do this instead. They all ask the same question: What was he thinking? What was she thinking? Unconsciously, even a casual spectator, knows that the person got lost in their HeadTrash.
It not a question of ability.
