The Calder Divide Trail is a long distance circular route across 12 valleys, 6 moors and 1 floodplain in West Yorkshire. It is a multi-day adventure along the watershed of the River Calder. From ancient bridleways across the Pennine moors to new gravel paths in the Southern Washlands and on through the centre of small towns like Hebden Bridge and Marsden this is an epic trail through a diverse and stunning landscape. More info on the event: https://www.calderdividetrail.co.uk/bikepackingevent The first day of the race led us through misty dales. 🌫 Steep hills, fantastic descents, rocky and bumpy terrain through the Pennine Bridleway and up the many hills Yorkshire has to offer. Day 2 started on a rainy morning at 6.30AM and straight away warmed up with a long climb to the top of one of the many hills of the day. 🏔 The morale was low after a short night sleep, but we forgot about that soon enough, with the spectacular views ahead... Today's terrain was more technical and climbs were longer but less frequent. We enjoyed the downhills, the waterfalls and many water dams on the way through forests and valleys. 🌲 We met up with a friend who had a gear mechanical, who then also pinched the sidewall and had to put a tube in. We helped him back on the bike and soldered on. Last few climbs were tough and we spent all our energies to keep up the pace and arrive quickly after all the issues during the day... When we got to the end, a small crowd with bells welcomed us. Inside we found our friends, and warm steak pies and mushy peas were the luxury food we really needed there! What an adventure Calder Divide was. We took our bikes for this one, not taking bike hire as a chance here to ensure we could ride 400km in only 3 days and a half. After flying from London to Venice we built the bikes up from the boxes and took a train to the lovely Bassano del Grappa where we met with other cool cyclists that were starting their adventure. A short 60km ride to our first accommodation just before the biggest climb of the route. We loved the vibe and scenery, but this was just the beginning... Day 1.5: We start the day with the biggest climb of the route, about 500m high and 12km long, The Colli Berici were not to be trifled with... We met some new friends @FeniceBike_Cycling and fun companions for the climb and soon after started a very long descent down to Verona. After an obligatory selfie at the Arena and the Ponte Vecchio we swiftly headed down towards Garda, with long stretches of green and canals leading us west... Day 2.5 was an hot one! Starting the day in a lovely B&B near Lake Garda and riding down towards #Gardaland and the Lake with stunning views all the way to Peschiera del Garda, a small town south east of the lake itself, where we stamped our 2nd checkpoint of the route at @gardagravel After a quick break and some photos we rode past the busy area along the canals and river paths and back inland towards Montagnana, our stop for the night. It was halfway there we realised we forgot our house keys at the B&B! 😭Sadly we had to call them and tell them to throw them away as we wouldn't reach it in time to complete the route too. (Luckily we had a spare at a friends' house when we got back to London 😅) No problem, onwards we went and through definitely more gravel than the first half of the route. Nothing too technical but definitely more watts to be consumed and more pasta to be had to replenish the carbs lost that day. That was also an excuse to taste the amazing Montagnana Cured Ham and Bigoli from a local restaurant that produces their own pasta 😍 Have you been in Veneto before? Day 3.5: The last day of Veneto Gravel started with little sleep from the night before... thanks to a noisy hotel neighbour that decided to have a call about her life choices the whole night 😭 We started a bit late to recover and get some rest while rain was looming on the horizon. We headed to Este and the countryside towards Colli Euganei, one of the prettiest sections of the route so far. We saw where Petrarca lived and composed some of his poetry and dreamed of simpler times while climbing higher. We then got to Padova for lunch and looked for a nice place to eat just outside the main town. A long straight led us to Bassano del Grappa where the finishers were waiting for us, along with some nice and well-deserved food and beer at the end. We managed to reach some of the cyclists we met earlier that had surpassed us, had a few chats and avoided most of the rain that day! Thundercross 2023 Fun Race at Herne Hill Velodrome was type 2 fun for sure! Gran Fondo Strade Bianche follows the pro womens' route that runs the day before the event. It was a race that pushed us over the limit and a little bit more. Stunning views, killer climbs, mechanicals dragged us over the 7 hour mark just by 13 minutes, plus a late start due to gridding meant not getting by the finish before the cutoff. An experience we will likely repeat next year, but with our bikes instead of hired ones. The tyre choice (or not a choice really) meant draggy flats and lots of wasted energy climbing with heavy gears. I would recommend skinnier tyres (although not road tyres as the pros) for a faster ride and less energy waste. Thanks to @granfondostradebianche133 for organising and all the sponsors. We hired our bikes from @mfcyclingtaranto2039 (MF Cycling Taranto) and the lovely staff helped us find the right fit and gave us a few routes to try out. The first day we tasted the coastal gravel trails winding down south of Taranto, while on the second day we rode mostly north of Taranto through some fine cycling lanes in the historic city, checking the castle and old town before going rural through olive fields, vineyards and some rocky descents and climbs. We rode through an aqueduct and followed the river back to Taranto, through some quiet roads and wide road shoulders. Il primo giorno abbiamo testato le gravel, passando attraverso la costa a sud di Taranto, mentre il secondo giorno abbiamo esplorato la cittá attraverso una discreta infrastruttura ciclistica, visitando castello e cittá antica, prima di addentrarci nella gravel a nord di Taranto, attraverso uliveti e vigneti, acquedotti e sentieri single track rocciosi e tecnici, salite e discese divertentissime e un ritorno tranquillo verso taranto attraversando strade in disuso e strade trafficate ma con un bordo strada ampio e autisti rispettosi. After a two year hiatus, Urban Hill Climb returned to Swain’s Lane. The only hill climb within Greater London and an iconic event on the UK circuit. The climb averages 8% and maxes out at 20% over 700m of tarmac making it one of the only places within Central London for hill climb specialists to test their mettle. Teams of two take it in turns to race a lap, before tagging their partner into the race, alternating laps until the finish. Getting a rest every lap and means you can go a lot quicker in the race, hitting the technical sections with more speed and giving you a different challenge to most cross races through the season.
