Beersel Castle | Belgium
#dragon #castle #belgium
A fortified residence at the site was attested as early as 1292. In 1300, however, Godefroid of Hellebeke, the first known Seigneur of Beersel, received permission from Jean II, Duke of Brabant, to build a fortification on the present site near his residence. It became one of several Brabantine fortifications in the area, including Gaasbeek Castle. In 1356, during the War of the Brabant Succession (1356–57), the original castle was besieged by soldiers from the County of Flanders, led by Louis of Male, who captured and sacked it.
Beersel Castle was rebuilt from 1357 with a circular enceinte. It had three large and one small tower. During the 14th century, ownership of the castle passed to the Seigneurs of Wittem (Witthem)
We are a family of four 👨👩👧👦 who, while living abroad, wondered into an old book store where we came across a trunk. After purchasing and taking it home, we began to look closer and while cleaning in, came across an old tome titled, "Dragons of the Antiquity and Medieval Europe and their Legends". As we researched further, we found the evidence so compelling that we began to wonder and believe that maybe Dragons actually existed. More and more research has been our inspiration as we dig into the history of Swabia, the Counts of Württemberg and their history with Dragons.

Montaigle Castle | Belgium
Rising proudly on a rocky outcrop the ruins of this fortified castle are straight out of the legendary Middle Ages.
They occupy the summit of a massive limestone mountain stretching from east to west and dominating the confluence of the two rivers.
Flint tools discovered in crevices at the south end of the spur suggest that this place has been occupied since prehistoric times.
Archaeological research also yielded ceramics from the Iron Age (around 450 BC)
Beginning in the middle of the 3rd century, with the Roman Empire going through a deep political, economic and social crisis, many of the regions of present-day Belgium became highly coveted by the Germans who were previously contained by the limes to the other side Rhine. Faced with this threat, the Roman administration and army hastily set up garrison posts throughout the Meuse basin and q small garrison was set up here but their presence was not continuous and fluctuated according to threats.
This military occupation ceased shortly after 450 and the site was then abandoned for four centuries; a Merovingian cemetery dating from the 6th-7th centuries discovered in 1886 in nearby Foy, seems to indicate a displacement of the habitat towards the valley.
Around 900, a castle was erected on top of the mighty rock. Those who occupied it probably belong first counts of Namur-- the lords of Faing, whose name, which appeared for the first time in an official document in 1050, was also that of the land and castle of Montaigle until the dawn of the 14th century.
In 1298, Guy de Dampierre, Count of Flanders and Marquis of Namur, bought the land of Faing and gave it to his youngest son Guy de Flandre -- also called Guy de Namur. He built a much larger castle here which are, presumably the remains of which stand before you now.
It is said that, as regent of Flanders during the captivity of his father, he fought the king of France, Philippe IV the Fair, in the famous Battle of the Golden Spurs (1302). Two days after the fight, he took a dozen French knights as hostages and brought them here…. Then swiftly seized the castle of Kortrijk.
We have discovered that Guy de Namur was a cunning dragon rider and his steed was none other than Tyrantic the Scorcher. We believe that, while holding this castle and fighting for independence, Guy used his dragon to strike fear into his subjects and his enemies.
In March 1311, he unexpectedly died and his possessions were given to his fiancé. Nothing of Tyrantic the Scorcher is heard after this, so we don’t know if he died along with his rider or if the dragon was sold or simply vanished in mourning.
Montaigle returned to the direct possessions of the Counts of Namur—to Guillaume I. It then became the seat of a bailiwick, an administrative district entrusted to senior officials such as bailiffs, castellans and tax collectors.
In 1421, penniless and covered in debt, Jean III sold the County of Namur to Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy but by this time, dragons hadn’t been seen in years.
In July 1554, soldiers, placed under the orders of Duke of Nevers, demolished "Chasteau de Disnant and all the other small forts in the area". Montaigle is part of the lot.

Crèvecœur Castle
#dinant #belgium
In 1136, Henry the Blind (c. 1113 – 14 August 1196) sometimes called Henry IV of Luxembourg, Count of #namur from 1136 until his death, and heir of his mother's family as Count of Luxembourg from 1139 until 1189 was awarded the lands of Luxembourg by the HRE Lothair II after the death of Conrad II, a relative of his mother. He therefore held the advocacies of the abbeys of Saint-Maximin at Trier and Saint-Willibrord at Echternach- much to the dissatisfaction of the Bishop of Liege.
After the death of his father in 1139, Henry inherited the County of Namur and cotined to accumulate land a title. In 1151 he inherited the lordship of Durbuy from his cousin Henry II of Durbuy and in 1153 he had inherited the lordship of La Roche-en-Ardenne from another cousin on his father's side, Henry II of La Roche which came with the advocacy of the abbey of Stavelot-Malmedy—another blow to the Bishop of Liege.
In 1141, Henry made nice with Adalbero II, Bishop of Liège, but in 1142, Henry and the Duke of Brabant supported Otto II, Count of Duras, in his dispute with the bishop and the citizens of Sint-Truiden.
With no sons to speak of, Henry named Count Baldwin IV of Hainault (his sister’s husband) as his heir and when Baldwin IV died, he named Baldwin V (IV’s son) as the heir.
Baldwin V and Henry swiftly carried out two wars (1170 and 1172) against the Duke Henry III of Limburg
This is where Dragons were, we believe, first used for warfare. Prior to this, we assumed that the dragons were used primarily for protection as the Bishop of Liège kept trying to forcefully take the abbey’s which were under Henry’s advocacy.
Gifted perhaps by King Lothair II in 1136- we’re in search of clues that Dragons were either raised and kept here OR if they were used in attacks and defense of this castle.
In 1186, 74-year-old count reunited with his estranged wife, Agnes of Guelders, and fathered a daughter, Ermesinde, who displaced Baldwin as heir presumptive.
Sensing the succession was in question Baldwin laid siege to the castle and city in 1188. Archaeologically identified fire marks are associated with a siege confirm that and Knights from the County of Champagne are said to have helped Namur with the defense. The following year, the betrothal of Ermsinde to Count Henry II of Champagne was cancelled.
Upon Henry's death in 1196, a war of succession took place. Count Theobald I of Bar, who had married, Ermesinda, refused to relinquish Namur and attacked Philip, besieging him at this castle. The war lasted 3 years.
Baldwin V and his two sons, Baldwin VI and Philip I, rode upon the dragons Xolzrud, Longtail ; Togad, the Firestarter; and Toned, the Youngling fought against Ermesinde upon Armole, the hungry (reportedly her father’s dragon) and her son Renaud riding on Vyre, the clever (who is said to have died during this battle).
• Baldwin VI would later go on, it is said, to use his Dragons during the Fourth Crusade in the sack of Constantinople.
• Philip I died childless, but his lands were given to his nephew, Philip II, Margquis of Namur
At its end, it was decided that Henry's fiefs would be split -- Baldwin V would have Namur (and this castle), Ermesinde would have Durbuy and La Roche, and Luxembourg would revert to their common liege, Stauffer Emperor Henry VI, who then gave it to his brother Otto.
There is no word of what happened to the Dragons. We believe Ermesinde, having remarried the Count of Limburg, used her dragons to rule Luxembourg. In 1214, Waleran III, Duke of Limburg and his wife besieged the castle—but the castellan was able to hold them off. In 1223 Ermesinde and Waleran pressed their claim again- against Philip II but failed – and it’s believed she no longer had a dragon as the battle concluded with peace in March 1223.
