That is one, but even if the candidate stands in the election, he’s no match for the candidate of the APC. Atiku,PDP Withdraw Suit From Tribunal On Permission To Inspect Election Materia. ThePresidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his party has withdrew a fresh application they filed seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow their agents to participate in the process of sorting out ballot papers that were used for the February 25, 2023, presidential election. Both Atiku and PDP, who are challenging the outcome of the election that was declared in favour the candidate of the All Progressives Congress Bola Ahmed Tinubu,told the Presidential Election Petition Court, sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Wednesday that they were no longer interested in the application. As the motion ex-parte numbered, CA/PEC/10M/2023, was called up for hearing, Atiku, through his team of lawyers led by Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN) told the court that he filed a notice of discontinuance. A member of Atiku’s legal team, who did not want his name mentioned said, the exparte motion was filed because of the challenges and administrative bottlenecks encountered at the INEC office when agents of the PDP and its presidential candidate went to access the election materials as ordered by the court, Nigerian Tribune reports. “However, before the application dated March 13 could be slated for hearing,INEC, on its own, called our legal team for a meeting. “It was at that meeting which held yesterday (Tuesday) that all the grey areas were sorted out, with INEC, pledging to allow our agents to observe the process of sorting out some of the electoral materials we requested for, especially the ballot papers. “Since that was primarily our prayer in the fresh application we filed, we felt that it would not be necessary to proceed with the hearing. So, to save judicial time, we filed a notice of discontinuance which was accordingly granted,” he added. The three-member panel of Justices of the court, headed by Justice Joseph Ikyegh struck out the application, following its withdrawal by Atiku and his party. Atiku, his party, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi and his party are challenging the declaration of the Presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election by INEC.

Three Suspected Armed Robbers Arrested In Ogun. Three members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate, terrorizing Ewekoro and its environs have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command. The suspects identified as Ahmed Isiaha, Sunday Ajibola and Jimoh Wahab were arrested following a distress call received at Ewekoro divisional headquarters that a 4-man robbery gang have invaded Apomu Community in Ewekoro local government area of the state and dispossessed members of the community of their belongings. Upon the distress call, the DPO Ewekoro division, CSP Jacob Olayemi, quickly mobilized his patrol team and moved to the scene. On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums took to their heels but they were hotly chased and with assistance from members of the community, three amongst the hoodlums were arrested. Items recovered from them include one locally fabricated double barrel pistol, five live cartridges, one expended cartridge, one Bajaj motorcycle with registration number TTN 975 VU, one TVS motorcycle with registration number JBD 353 W and some Criminal charms. Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Frank Mba, has directed that the suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for discreet investigation.

Bode George Lied About Our ICT Dept – INEC. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to allegations that it employed one Femi Odubiyi, a former commissioner in Lagos as a director in its ICT department. The allegation was made by a former deputy national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George. George was quoted in some media reports as saying that the said Odubiyi was a former Lagos State commissioner for Science and Technology. The PDP chieftain also claimed that the Odubiyi is an ally of the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But INEC in a statement by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, on Tuesday dismissed the claim, accusing George of peddling fake news. Okoye said the commission does not have anyone with such name in its ICT Department. He said, “the name ‘Femi Odubiyi’ does not even exist within our ICT Department at the INEC headquarters in Abuja or any State office of the Commission.” Okoye said INEC’s ICT staff are career officers and none has held any political appointment in any state of the federation. He, therefore, asked the public to disregard the claim by the PDP chieftain, saying “its promoter should have been circumspect so as not to be seen as a purveyor of fake news.”

An engagement almost ended in tears after a Kenyan woman swallowed the proposal ring that was placed in her food as a surprise. Unknown to her, the family and her boyfriend Johannah Charo had planned a surprise engagement party. The day started well with family members preparing food and Jessica was tasked with preparing a special dish that is her father's favourite. "Pilau is our father's favourite and also her boyfriend's. So she knew she was doing it for dad and dedicated herself to it," said her sister, Melanie Hawayu. Meanwhile, the boyfriend and his friends were hanging around town waiting for the signal from his girlfriend's family once things were ready. At about 2pm, they received a text asking them to start advancing toward the venue as the tables were set. The plan between the woman's mother and the boyfriend was to bury the engagement ring in a plate of pilau, where she would discover it. "Dad had protested the idea but since there was no better idea, we decided to take a chance with the one we had and proceeded with it," narrated Melanie. Jessica's mother was in charge of serving the food and kept sending her daughter on errands as she buried the ring in the plate. Charo had already sneaked into the compound and was to appear from behind where the girlfriend was seated. It was all laughter and joy at the table as Charo tiptoed towards the table, a move that was cut short when his girlfriend started choking on the food. All efforts went into rescuing her as she left the table and ran towards her father who hit her on the back three times, only for her to vomit the ring. "We did not anticipate that would happen, but dad feared it would. That was so close, it left mum crying," said Oscar Habil, Jessica's younger brother. Commercial Drivers Stage Protest As Task Force Officals Beat A Driver To Death In Rivers. Commercial taxi drivers in Rivers State came out in their numbers to protest the killing of their colleague by members of the government-owned Task Force on Street Trading and illegal Motor Parks. It was gathered that the victim was attacked and beaten beyond recognition by the taskforce members and was rushed to the hospital on Sunday, March 12, 2023, where he died. According to sources, who spoke to journalist, the victim had parked his bus by the roadside for his passengers who had arrived at their exit point to alight, when the task force men came. An argument ensued between the driver and the task force officials and it resulted in the beating of the driver. It was learned that the victim died at the hospital where he was rushed after he had collapsed during that attack on him. However, friends and drivers in the area took to the streets of Rumuokoro and Ikwerre road, stopping every form of vehicular movement in the area. When news filtered in that the victim had died at the hospital, his aggrieved friends and colleagues, on Monday, March 13, staged a peaceful protest at Rumuokoro in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state. The protest resulted in heavy human traffic from Rumuokoro to Rupokwu, leaving passengers stranded, while some trekked from Rupokwu junction to Rumuokoro due to absence of vehicles. Also, drivers from other parts of the state who wanted to ply the route, either made U-turn or used alternative routes. Others parked by the roadside and disembarked their passengers for fear of being attacked by protesting drivers. One of the drivers said: “The protest is to honour our dead colleague. We have resolved that we will not offer our services until government bans the boys that are doing this.” An eyewitness said the task force officials involved in the beating have been arrested. Also, leaders of the drivers’ union, who addressed the protesters, assured that the matter would be taken to court. Spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident, said the culprits have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

The Nigerian military has been ranked 36th in the world and fourth in the African continent by the recently released global firepower index. The Nigerian military dropped one place in the latest global military ranking but no reasons were provided for the development. Recall that the Global Fire Power had rated the Armed Forces of Nigeria 35 out of 142 countries considered for the annual ranking in 2022. But in 2023, the Nigerian military was ranked 36th out of a total of 145 countries reviewed for the 2023 ranking. Nigeria also dropped from third to fourth on the continent. The United States of America's military is ranked first in the world; Russia is second; followed by China. India is ranked fourth; the United Kingdom fifth. South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, France and Italy are respectively ranked sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth in the world. In Africa, Egypt is ranked number one and 14th in the world, Algeria came second and 26th in the world, and South Africa is ranked 33rd in the world to emerge third on the continent. "Ranking the nations of the world based on currently available firepower. The finalised Global Firepower ranking below utilises over 60 individual factors to determine a given nation's Power Index ('PwrIndx') score with categories, ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography. "For 2023, Nigeria is ranked 36 of 145 out of the countries considered for the annual GFP review. The nation holds a PwrIndx score of 0.5587," the organisation said. Lagos security guard arrested for killing house-help after she rejected his advances. The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old security guard, Barnabas Job over the alleged murder of a 26-year-old housemaid, Thereza Ekibi. The spokesman of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development to journalists on March 12, 2023 said that the housemaid was allegedly murdered in her bedroom by the suspect at the same house they both work & live at Country Home Estate in the Lekki area of Lagos. According to the PPRO, the cutlass used by the suspect was recovered with blood on it. He said that the suspect, who confessed to the crime had been taken to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti alongside the cutlass for investigation. It was gathered that the suspect tried to woo the victim but when she turned him down, he became angry, picked a cutlass & hacked her to death. He attempted to escape after killed her but was held by neighbours.

The late corps member, who was serving with the Curriculum Services Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Education in Alausa was buried on Saturday, March 11, at Atan cemetery.
