Woman, 41, is jailed after forcing a man to have sex with her while he was asleep. A woman from Lancashire, England, was jailed on Friday, March 10, for four years after she admitted forcing a man to have sex with her while he was asleep. Tanya Lord, 41, who is a lesbian, had already pleaded guilty to the sex attack at her home in Co Armagh at an earlier hearing at Craigavon Crown Court. She was told by the judge there “seems to be no distinction to be drawn between this and the rape of a female.” Outlining how the victim has been left mentally scarred and suspicious of people by his ordeal, the judge said “there's a repeated myth that males are less susceptible” to the consequences of sex attacks. He revealed the victim has received counselling, is still prescribed medication for his mental health, has been left untrusting of people and “feels alone” unless he's with his kids. In an impact statement, the victim told the court: “I would not wish this on anyone,” adding that “encourage anyone who has been abused to come forward.” Judge Lynch said if the myth about male victims “needs to be disabused, it can be disabused now by the contents of the victim impact statement I have just read out” and warning that “there's no distinction between male and female rape - the fact that a male is the victim doesn't make it any less serious than the rape of a female victim”. Lord admitted causing a man “to engage in sexual activity with you involving penetration of your vagina with his penis and that he did not consent to the sexual activity, and you did not reasonably believe that he so consented”. The court heard how Lord forced the victim to have sex when they shared a bed at her home. Prosecutor Joseph Murphy said the man had been drinking all day and met up Lord after she finished work on June 23, 2020. They went back to her house, had a few more drinks and some food and then went to bed with both wearing shorts. The victim believed that no sexual intercourse would take place because he understood that Lord was a lesbian. The prosecutor said however that in the early hours of the morning, the victim woke and “felt a pain across his chest”. He regained his senses and realised that his boxer shorts had been pulled down to his knees, his penis was inside Lord and she was “straddling him, bouncing up and down”. The victim pushed her off and she pretended to be asleep. The victim got up and went downstairs “to process what had happened”. He pretended to be asleep in the sofa when Lord brought his clothes down but when she left the room, he got dressed and left the property. He then spoke to his mother and partner before reporting the incident to police. He was taken to a rape enquiry centre where he had to endure an intimate examination, have swabs taken from his private parts and be interviewed on video by specialist detectives. It was those swabs, the court heard, that helped form an “overwhelming case” against Lord because while she claimed there had been no sexual contact whatsoever, her full DNA profile was found on the victim's penis. When she was questioned, Lord “could provide no explanation” why her DNA had been found on intimate swabs and more than two years after the incident, with repeated delays and adjournments and an aborted trial, she finally confessed her guilt at the eleventh hour. The prosecutor argued the fact that the victim asleep when he was attacked was an aggravating feature of the case. Mr Murphy told the court that he could find no similar such case in the UK. “Factually this case involved a woman having sex with a man without his consent and there should be parity between male victims of sexual crime and female victims,” he said, submitting that to do otherwise would affirm the “myth that men are less affected by sexual assault than women.” Defence lawyer Michael Ward said Lord, who suffers from a personality disorder and has poor mental health, “has expressed remorse for her offending and some victim awareness”. “She understands the position she had put herself in and she expresses, through me today, her remorse and her apologies to the victim for the unfortunate and regrettable incident,” said the barrister. In addition to the four-year sentence, Lord was ordered to sign the police sex offenders register for the rest of her life.

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta has announced that it is creating a new social media app that lets users share character-limited posts to take on Elon Musk's Twitter. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the 'standalone decentralized social network' to Reuters, stating that 'there is an opportunity for a separate space' for people to share updates about their interests. The app's name is unknown, but it will be based on a similar framework that powers Mastodon, a Twitter-like service launched in 2016. A Twitter-like app would allow Meta to take advantage of the current chaos at the Musk-led company, where cost-cutting and layoffs have been rampant. MoneyControl reported Thursday about Meta's Twitter competitor, stating it is codenamed 'P92.' The app would be Instagram-branded, allowing users to register with the same credentials, people familiar with the matter told MoneyControl.

Only INEC can determine mode of collating, transmitting election results - Court rules. A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that it is only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that is empowered by law to determine the mode of collating and transmitting election results. Justice Emeka Nwite, in a judgment, also held that it is only INEC that has the prerogative to direct how Polling Unit Presiding Officer should transfer election results, including the total number of accredited voters and results of the ballot. Before dismissing the suit, Justice Nwite held that the collating and transferring election results manually in the 2023 general elections is in line with the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022. The judgment was on a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1454/2022 filed by the Labour Party (LP), with INEC as the only defendant. LP had prayed the court to declare that INEC has no power to choose manual method other than the electronic method provided for by the relevant provisions the Electoral Act, 2022. The Labour Party urged the court to issue an order directing INEC to comply with the Electoral Act, 2022 on electronic transmission of result in the forthcoming general election. The judge said: “From the argument of the learned plaintiff’s counsel, I am of the humble opinion that the bone of contention or the sections that seeks for interpretation are actually sections 50(2) 60(5) and 62(2) of the Electoral Act, 2922. “Section 47(2) as cited by the learned counsel to the plaintiff only deals with accreditation of voters using a Smart Card Reader, but not collation or transmission of result as postulated by the learned counsel,” the judge held. Justice Nwite said that Section 60(5) of the Electoral Act, 2022 provides for the transfer of election result, including the total number of the accredited voters from the polling unit. He noted that Section 62(2) of the same Act provides for compilation, maintenance and continuous update of the register of election result as distinct database for all polling units’ results as collated in all elections conducted by the commission. “The said Section 62(2) has mandated that such register of election results shall be kept in an electronic format by the commission at its national headquarters. “Now a close reading of Section 50(2) of the Act has provided for voting and and transmission of result to be done in accordance wit the procedure to be determined by the commission. “This is to say that the commission is at liberty to prescribe or choose the manner in which election results shall be transmitted. “In same ambit, Section 60(5) empowered the Polling Unit Presiding Officer to transfer the election results, including the total number of accredited voters and results of the ballot in a manner to be prescribed by the commission. “This is also to say the commission is again at liberty to prescribe to the Polling Units’ Presiding Officer the manner in which to collate and transfer the election results as well as the accredited number of voters in an election under the Act.” “In view of the foregoing, can the act of the defendant (INEC) in collating and transferring election results manually in the forthcoming 2023 general elections be said to be contrary to the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022? “The answer can only be in the negative as there is no where in the above cited sections where the commission or any of its Agents is mandated to only use an electronic means in collating or transferring of election result. “If any, the commission is only mandated to collate and transfer election results and number of accredited voters in a way or manner deemed fit by it. “In view of the above, I am finding that, by the provisions of Sections 50(2) and 60(5) of the Electoral Act, 2022 the correct interpretation of the said statutes is that the defendant (INEC) is at liberty to prescribe the manner in which election results could be transmitted and I so hold. “Consequently this matter is hereby dismissed,” Justice Nwite said. INEC declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election, after he defeated Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

A campaign convoy of the Labour Party governorship candidate in Kaduna state, Honourable Jonathan Asake was attacked by suspected political thugs on Friday, March 10, at Gidan Waya in Jema’a Local Government Area of the state. Spokesman of the Labour Party Candidate, James Swam, said the incident happened when the campaign convoy was passing through Gidan Waya during Friday Muslim prayers, on its way to Godogodo and other towns as the campaign team toured the local government. Channels Television reported that the attack ensued after the first three vehicles in the convoy made their way through the old tyres used to demarcate the road. Thugs in the area started throwing stones, big sticks and other harmful objects at the long convoy, before the timely intervention of the security personnel attached to the candidate intervened. Two boys and two girls were injured during the attack.

Saudi Arabia and Iran announced on Friday, March 10 that they have agreed to reestablish diplomatic ties after seven years of hostility- a deal between the regional arch-rivals that could have wide-ranging implications for the Middle East. In a joint statement Riyadh and Tehran said they plan to reopen their embassies within two months in an agreement mediated by China. They also plan to re-implement a security pact signed 22 years ago under which both parties agreed to cooperate on terrorism, drug-smuggling and money-laundering, as well as reviving a trade and technology deal from 1998. Friday’s announcement is also a diplomatic victory for China in the middle east region that has long been considered part of the US’ domain of influence. It comes as the Biden administration tries to create its own win in the Middle East brokering a peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Talks had been ongoing since March 6 in Beijing between Iranian national security chief Ali Shamkhani, Saudi national security council adviser Mosaed Bin Mohammad Al-Aiban and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi, according to Iranian state media. Video of the signing ceremony aired by Iranian media showed officials seated around tables on opposite sides with the Saudi Arabian, Iranian and Chinese flags around them. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till Saturday, March 18, DailyTrust reports. The polls, earlier scheduled for Saturday, March 11, was postponed due to the inability of the commission to commence the re-configuration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used for the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, to enable their use for the state elections. According to the report, authoritative sources disclosed that the commission management decided to postpone the election till March 18 following a meeting in Abuja. “You know that the BVAS re-configuration would take three or four days and since they would all be moved to the headquarters in Abuja, the machines would be re-configured and deployed to the various states and finally to the polling units,” one of the officials said.
