Ukrainian army takes action on Belarus border - DRILLS KICK OFF along the border
The crackle of gunfire and the roar of armoured vehicles filled sleepy west Ukrainian towns near the Belarusian border on Wednesday (January 11) as Kyiv's forces trained for the threat of a fresh assault across a new front in the north.
Ukraine fears Russia could build up forces on the territory of its Belarusian ally before striking in the northwest or northeast of Ukraine or even trying to drive towards Kyiv as it did when it invaded last February.
By reopening a northern front, Russia would stretch Kyiv's forces, which have been focused for months on bloody battles raging in the east and south, forcing it to divert forces to the north.

Zelenskiy ABOUT SOLEDAR:"The fighting continues" AND "Russians suffering heavy losses"-Official Kyiv
"Now the terrorist state and its propagandists are trying to pretend that some part of our city of Soledar... is some kind of Russia's achievement", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on January 11 mocked Russian claims to have taken over parts of the eastern city of Soledar, saying that fighting was still going on. Russian mercenary group Wagner
claimed it had taken full control of Soledar but that fighting continued. Soledar is a salt-mining town near the city of Bakhmut, which has been the focus of a Russian assault aimed at capturing the entire Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
"Now the terrorist state and its propagandists are trying to pretend that some part of Soledar - almost completely destroyed by the occupiers - is some kind of Russia's achievement. They will present - and are already presenting - this to their society in such a way as to support the mobilization and to give hope to those who support aggression. But the fighting continues. The Donetsk direction is holding out. And we, without a break even for one day, do everything to strengthen the Ukrainian defence", Zelenskiy said in a video address. "The fighting continues," he added. In a separate statement on Facebook, the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces said the Russians were suffering heavy losses as they tried to take Soledar and cut off the supply routes for pro-Kyiv units.

Ukrainian military near Soledar fire German-made howitzer
Ukrainian servicemen fired a German-made PzH 2000 howitzer at Russian positions on Wednesday (January 11) near Soledar.
Despite some technical flaws, the servicemen are satisfied with the PzH 2000.A Ukrainian serviceman who uses the call-sign ‘Pravda’ says their howitzer shot more than 1,300 shells in two months.
“When the automatics work, the fire rate is unbelievable. It shoots very quickly; it shoots very accurately. If you do everything correct, it shoots unbelievably accurately,” said ‘Pravda’.
Russian commanders have targeted Soledar as a platform to attack the nearby city of Bakhmut, which has held out for months against a Russian onslaught.
A victory in Soledar would have symbolic, military and commercial value for Russia after a series of battlefield setbacks in recent months, but its fate was not entirely clear on Wednesday morning.
The Kyiv government said earlier its forces were holding out. The Ukrainian military's morning summary made one mention of Soledar, listing it as one of several towns being shelled in the Donetsk region of the Donbas.
Reuters was unable to verify conditions on the ground.

Satellite images show destruction in Ukraine's Soledar and Bakhmut - Putin tries to change situation
Recent satellite images released on Wednesday (January 11) showed the destruction caused by intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces around the neighbouring towns of Soledar and Bakhmut on Ukraine's eastern frontline. The images by private U.S. company Maxar Technologies captured burnt out settlements in the mining town of Soledar and a field in Bakhmut scarred with shell craters. The head of Russia's private military firm Wagner said his forces had achieved the complete "liberation" of Soledar, killing around 500 pro-Ukraine troops. Minutes before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had mocked earlier Russian claims to control part of the town and said fighting continued. Reuters was unable to independently verify the situation in Soledar. If pro-Russian forces succeed in taking Soledar, it would be a stepping stone in Moscow's thrust to capture Ukraine's eastern Donbas industrial region. The town would be a base to attack the nearby city of Bakhmut, which has held out for months and is a supply line hub in eastern Ukraine.

Russia's Wagner says it found body of missing Briton in Ukraine: Andrew Bagshaw or Christopher Parry
Forces from Russia's Wagner Group on Wednesday (January 11) found the body of one of two British voluntary aid workers reported missing in eastern Ukraine, the private military firm said in a statement. It did not mention the name of the dead man but said documents belonging to both Britons had been found on his body. A photo posted alongside the statement appeared to show passports bearing the names of Andrew Bagshaw and Christopher Parry, the two missing workers. Ukrainian police said on Monday (January 9) they were looking for the pair who went missing in east Ukraine, the scene of heavy fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces. "Today the body of one of them was found. Documents for both Britons were discovered with him," said the Wagner statement. It did not give details on where the body was found. Ukrainian police said the two left the city of Kramatorsk for the town of Soledar on Friday (January 6) morning and were reported missing on Saturday (January 7) evening after contact with them was lost. A spokesperson for Britain's Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the families of two British men who have gone missing in Ukraine."

German police start evicting climate activists from deserted mining village of Luetzerath
Hundreds of German police began to clear climate protesters holed up in an abandoned village near the Dutch border on Thursday (January 12) in a continuing standoff over the expansion of a coal mine.
For over two years demonstrators had occupied Luetzerath, a village in the brown-coal district of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, to stop the expansion of the Garzweiler lignite coal mine, run by energy firm RWE.
Following a court decision allowing RWE to proceed with the expansion, police in riot gear moved in a day earlier, clearing barricades put up by the activists.
Two people were detained and another three are in custody since the operation started on Wednesday, according to Aachen police spokesperson Andreas Mueller.
Equipped with ladders, sledgehammers and power saws, police climbed the walls of one of the abandoned houses in the village as protesters in the building and on its roof chanted "people got the power" and "Luetzerath stays".
Activists said hundreds of protesters were still at the site.

Angry hotel guest smashes car into Shanghai hotel
A sports car was seen driving through the lobby of an upscale hotel in Shanghai, with local media reporting it took place after a guest had a dispute with the management of the luxury accommodation.
Local media said the incident happened on Tuesday (January 10). Reuters was able to verify the building in the video as the Jinling Purple Mountain Hotel in Shanghai, by matching interior details with file images.
Footage filmed by an eyewitness showed the white vehicle entering the hotel through the lobby, driving over fallen door frames before moving erratically and knocking over objects. A group of men attempted to surround the car, before it moved again and came to a stop in front of the lobby doors.
A 28-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident, in which no one was injured, and preliminary investigations revealed he was upset due to the loss of a laptop during a stay at the hotel, according to police officials cited by local media.

"They slowly kill him in PRISON"-Alexei Navalny, jailed Russian opposition leader is ill, allies say
The wife of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny appealed to prison staff to provide him with basic medicines on Wednesday (January 11) as his supporters warned with increasing urgency that his life was in danger. Navalny's allies said the 46-year-old was placed in a cramped punishment cell for 15 days on Dec. 31, the 10th time he had been sent there in the space of five months for misdemeanors such as washing his face at the wrong time or failing to button up his prison uniform. Navalny posted on social media via his lawyers this week that authorities had deliberately infected him by placing a sick man next to him as a "bacteriological weapon." His allies say there is a flu outbreak in the prison colony where he is being held east of Moscow, and he has a bad fever and cough.
His wife Yulia appealed to prison authorities via Instagram. "Are you human? You have parents and children waiting for you when you come back from work. What's going on in your head? How do you live, rejoicing that you deliberately infected a man and you don't treat him or pass on any medicines?" she asked. Russia's federal prison service, FSIN, did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. Navalny's supporters said a legal hearing over his prison conditions went ahead on Wednesday, although he had asked for it to be postponed because of his illness. The outcome of the proceedings was not clear. "Navalny looks exhausted. He is really ill, and the prison colony is refusing him the most basic and necessary medicines. They are just slowly killing him in prison," his ally Lyubov Sobol said on Twitter.
