Heavy rain, flooding and some awesome fossil finds including a potential jaw section
As I drove to the fossil location, the rain started getting pretty heavy and some parts of State Highway 1 were flooded. Luckily the beach was quite sheltered but I made sure to stay away from the cliffs as they get very unstable once they are saturated like this.

Exploring 3 rivers, prepping 2 fossil teeth [Fossil Hunt and Fossil Prep]
I explored 3 different rivers over the course of a weekend and found a nice assortment of fossils and even an artifact!
I'll get the petrified wood polished up in my rock tumbler and we can see how it turns out.
If you know what tooth the hastalis looking one is, please let me know!

Plesiosaur fossil find and prep: looking for some dinosaur age fossils [prep included!]
I headed out to two areas, one Oligocene and one Cretaceous, to look for some new fossils. I had a great couple of days and found some good fossils including a large suspected Cretaceous fossil fish.
One of the fossils I found looked like a rib so I decided to do a quick prep on it using a few air scribes and vinegar.

Enormous fossil crab concretion #fossils #rare #beach
Dacre found this huge crab concretion with the matching lid. It was a huge team effort to get it back to the car with Kamen, James, Darren, Tyler, Ronny and Caleb all helping getting it done! I'll prep it for Dacre and then we'll donate it to a university so everyone can enjoy it.
X-raying a fossil skull to create a 3D model and then print it
This is part two of the fossil skull prep, in part one I removed the rock using a combination of air scribes and vinegar.
A huge thanks to Pacific Radiology, Leighton and Paul for organising the CT scan of the skull and of course to Andrew Cuff for segmenting it.

Huge fossil skull! 4 million year old fossil revealed [My rarest fossil yet - New Zealand]
This is one of my favourite fossil preps so far! It was really awesome working on this rare late-Miocene Pliocene fossil turtle and just goes to show that you never know what you will find!
The next step is to get it CT scanned and then into a public collection (museum) so that it can be studied further.
Total time to prep it was around 120 hours air scribe work and roughly 30 - 35 acid cycles.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify fossils and fossil turtle update [New Zealand forams]
I did this video for my patron channel a year or so ago and thought I would give it an update to share with you all as I will be looking into micro fossils again soon.

Golden leg fossil prep - Makers' Challenge 2023
I was really hoping to be done with the fossil turtle skull for the Maker's Challenge but this crab will do nicely! It was a really fun prep and the air abrasion unit did such a good job on those sticky bits!

Fossil hunting on the beach: I find some cool treasures washed up on the rocks
I didn't have much time over the weekend but managed to squeeze in a quick hunt on a local beach near sunset. I managed to find a few cool fossils even though it got dark quite early.
The beach at this location can be quite confusing as there are fossils from multiple ages being washed up on the beach.
There are clips from two short fossil hunts in this video.

630 hours to 3D print a life-size, extinct mega bird from New Zealand [Little bush moa]
I am so happy to be able to share this video with you all, it took SUCH a long time to put together - hundreds of hours of work printing, editing, figuring out - it was crazy!
I had to figure out the time-lapse for the 3D printing as it's not quite as straightforward as I thought it would be, OctoLapse was a lifesaver though. Such a good bit of software.
The model was quite tricky to put together as the bones are from 4 different moas and some have been digitally created from mirroring the opposite bones. This meant I had to be quite liberal with the hot glue to fill in some gaps and voids to make it work.
I estimate it took about 3kg of filament to print, 630 hours and 10 hours to put together.
Phew, now back to some fossil prep!
