Firearms Officers chased and caught a teenager after he waved a gun in broad daylight in Birmingham
Nikye Thomas was chased through Burlington Arcade and New Street station on a busy Saturday afternoon, dropping his loaded gun before finally being taken to the ground.
The drama unfolded at around 3.10pm on 24 June when a woman phoned 999 to report a fight near the Snow Hill station car park.
The 19-year-old was seen grappling with a man over a small bag. Seconds later, Thomas pulled a handgun out and pointed it at the other man.
The man he was threatening fled the scene and Thomas made off, but firearms officers spotted him and chased him.
Dramatic footage released today showed how officers relentlessly pursued him before bringing the chase to a safe conclusion outside New Street station.
When the gun was recovered at Burlington Arcade, five live rounds were in the magazine with another in the chamber ready to be fired.
A quantity of cannabis resin, some scales and a burner phone were also found in his bag.
In interview, Thomas initially gave false details to officers before answering no comment to all questions.
Thomas, of Colindale Road, Birmingham, was jailed for five years at Birmingham Crown Court on 13 September for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was given a further six months, to be served concurrently, for possession of cannabis with intent to supply.
Detective Sergeant Sharon Owen, from our Major Crime team, said: "This was a shocking and reckless act which happened in the middle of a busy Saturday afternoon at a time when the city was full of innocent people.
“Thanks to great work by CCTV operators, firearms officers, forensics and investigators, Thomas is now behind bars.
"In addition to the five rounds in the gun's magazine, one was in the chamber and ready to be fired.
"Carrying guns on our streets is completely unacceptable and this investigation could easily have become a murder investigation had he pulled the trigger.
"We are determined to take guns off the streets and arresting those who think it is acceptable."
The conviction comes after we launched Operation Target, which is focused on bringing serious and organised criminals to justice in the #westmidlands #birmingham

Two men have both been sentenced to 14 years for the death of 16-year-old Alisha Goup in Oldham
Omar Choudhury and Hamidur Rahman have today both been sentenced to 14 years each for their irresponsible actions that led to the sad death of Alisha Goup in February.
Omar Choudhury of Broadway, Royton and Hamidur Rahman of Tilbury Street, Oldham have been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving at Minshull Street Crown Court both receiving sentences of 14 years, serving two-thirds of that in custody.
In addition, they were both disqualified from driving for a minimum of 12 years.
This was after their irresponsible and catastrophic actions on the early afternoon (around 1:30pm) of Thursday 23 February 2023 resulted in 16-year-old Alisha Goup losing her life as she walked to Oldham Sixth Form College where she was a student.
Heading towards Oldham Town Centre along Rochdale Road, the tragic incident happened outside of the Coldhurst Community Park near to the junction of the Royal Oldham Hospital, which is busy main road with footpaths, bus stops, zebra crossing and residential and business properties.
Despite the best attempts of emergency services, Alisha was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later after the car, a BMW 3 series with the distinctive registration OM08 ARR, mounted the pavement and collided with her as she walked along the footpath, this was after hitting a white Ford Fiesta turning at the junction and losing control as he attempted to overtake on the wrong side of the road.
Evidential CCTV footage used by officers showed both Choudhury and Rahman racing through the streets of Oldham and overtaking cars on St Mary’s Way and Chadderton Way before heading along Rochdale Road where Rahman turned off onto Coldhurst Street. Rahman was also driving a BMW – a 1 series with the registration H21 MDR and wasn’t insured to drive this vehicle.
This was from an earlier threatening confrontation in public with a weapon believed to be a baseball bat before the fatal collision occurred, resulting in Choudhury reversing on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic, mounting a pedestrian island before driving on the wrong side of the carriageway.
These erratic actions and excessive speed culminated in the road traffic collision involving Alisha. #uk #sentence #jail #subscribe #manchester
