Tree Cutting FAILS, close calls, and near misses...
Rigging Fails, Hardware fails, Failures of good judgement, and much more. It's all in here. This is the behind the scenes stuff from the vault. I got my first GoPro camera mounted on my helmet in December 2016, and I've been filming ever since. I have only used a small fraction of it for videos up to this point.
I have to be honest with you:
a. I am really glad to have this footage and be able to look back on it.
b. I feel like I have really come a long way in my own knowledge and skill set since starting EC. I look back and see a ton of things that I do differently nowadays. In trying to explain things to others, I have greatly deepened my own understanding.

Climbing with a pre-installed Aerial Rescue Line: Experiment #1
Tree trimming and climbing with a pre-installed Aerial Rescue Line: Experiment #1 May 6, 2020
G'day friends, this is something that I have been wanting to experiment with for a while now: how much of a pain is it to climb and work a tree with a secondary climbing rope and system already set up and ready to go? Now, I know that this doesn't address any of the other factors, such as having someone on the ground who is competent enough to climb up and perform a rescue, having all of the necessary gear on hand at all times for that rescue, etc, etc, but I see this as the very first step towards that end goal: can we get in a habit of using a secondary line, and can we tolerate working around it? Join Tom and I as we experiment with this idea...

Forget the money. Do what you love...
Now, this is just my opinion, but I honestly believe that you should choose where you work based on the learning opportunities, not on the paycheque. Especially when you're young. You've got your whole life to make money. And after all, if you are not learning at work, then you are missing out on a significant portion of your compensation...

Controlled Freefall | Arborist Rigging Techniques
Controlled Freefall: Basic Arborist Rigging Techniques
On the spectrum of rigging and control, where one end is full, slow control, and the other end is freefalling the material, this concept of 'controlled freefall' exists somewhere in the middle. It involves being opportunistic on the ropes, letting them move fast when it makes sense to, slowing them down as needed. Try it out on the job, it's a fantastic technique!

Lazy or Efficient? Polesaw in a Tree Episode 2: Rigging Out Of Reach
Polesaw in a Tree Episode 2: Rigging Out Of Reach
Hey Climber Nation, I posted about using a battery polesaw in a tree on Instagram back in the summer, and someone who I have a lot of respect for simply said "that's just lazy". To which I replied, "well maybe, but then again, aren't chainsaws 'lazy', since we COULD do tree work with axes and crosscut saws...? So, what do you guys think? One man's 'lazy' is another man's 'efficient'... ;)
