Ep. 4 SHELTOWEE TRACE Thru-Hike / Quest for the FKT TRILOGY
Episode 4 of my attempt to set the overall Fastest Known Time in under six days on the 341 mile Sheltowee Trace.
This is where it all began for me, by setting my first FKT in 2019 going Self-Supported and the first ever Unsupported FKT in 2021. I just missed setting the overall by 5 hours and I was unable to shake the thought of possibly coming back one day to attempt to set the new overall fastest time.
At that same time, it also occurred to me that if I did come back one more time, I would try to go supported with a crew and complete the trifecta of FKT’s on the Trace, with having held an FKT in each of the three categories. I attempted to accomplish this in 2021 but fell short at 1/3 of the way through due to poor weather. Will my fourth and final attempt be successful?
On this attempt I carried my Garmin Inreach mini and wore a Corus Apex watch for verification. For shoes I wore mostly the Altra Olympus 4.0’s, but also Topo Ultraventure 2's and Topo Pursuit's with Darn Tough socks and Dirty Girl Gators. My trekking poles were Fizan Compact 3 aluminum poles. My running vest was a Salomon ADV Skin 5.

The BEST Campground Right on the River! | Audra State Park, West Virginia
Looking for a beautiful wooded state park right on the river with an amazing hiking trail, then look no further than Audra State Park in West Virginia. This place was amazing! Even though it is an older, smaller state park, it was very well maintained and had great camping right next to the Middle Fork River and a very nice 2.7 mile hiking trail accross the road called the Alum Cave Trail. There were numerous picnicking options with views of the river and several shelter houses for events. Definitely worth a visit if in West Virginia! In this video I show footage of all 67 campsites.

Kayaking This River Nearly Drove me MAD! / Frustration on the Mad River
Hoping to finish my section paddle of all 52 miles of the Mad River in 2023, I set out in the most Northern section at Lions Club Park in West Liberty Ohio. 15 miles stood between me and reaching my goal, but with very low water levels, my plans were thwarted and was forced to stop 10 miles short of my goal. And who is this weirdo at the end hiding in the corn field watching me!?

Kayak Camping Adventure with AMAZING Campfire Cooking! // Mad River Final 16 Miles
The final segment of the Mad River in West Central Ohio, 16 miles from Spangler Road to the end where it joins up with the Great Miami River at Deeds Point Metro Park in Dayton. The last 6 miles has several difficult portages and rapids and is not recommended for the beginner. Several friends joined me on this paddle and we found a great sandbar to camp on and cooked some incredible food over the fire. Check out the links below to see my other section paddles on the beautiful Mad River.
