Biden and Trump border visits highlight immigration as a major election issue
Biden and Trump border visits highlight immigration as a major election issue
EAGLE PASS, Texas (AP) — President Joe Biden and his likely Republican challenger Donald Trump both headed to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas on Thursday in a sign of how central immigration has become to the 2024 election and how much each man wants to use it to his advantage.
Each has chosen an optimal location from which to underscore his points.
Biden, who wants to spotlight how Republicans tanked a bipartisan border security deal on Trump’s orders, headed to the Rio Grande Valley city of Brownsville. For nine years, this was the busiest corridor for illegal crossings, but they have dropped sharply in recent months.
“Brownsville, Texas, is a very good glimpse of how dynamic and challenging that migration phenomenon is,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said from Air Force One.
Trump, for his part, wants to continue his attacks on Biden and keep up his dialed-up rhetoric after saying migrants were poisoning the blood of Americans. He journeyed to Eagle Pass, roughly 325 miles northwest of Brownsville, in the corridor that’s currently seeing the largest number of crossings. Trump was to speak from a state park that has become a Republican symbol of defiance against the federal government’s immigration enforcement practices.
In other words, the split screen moment couldn’t possibly be more split, and each candidate is asking voters to side with his approach to immigration.

Blizzard Is Forecast to Bring ‘Life-Threatening’ Conditions to California
A rare warning for “life-threatening blizzard conditions” is in effect for the mountains of the Sierra, including Lake Tahoe, for a storm that could bring three feet of snow or more from Thursday through Sunday, according to forecasters.
Blizzard warnings are reserved for the worst snow storms with whiteout conditions that could last hours or, in this case, days, with the weather likely making travel in the region treacherous. The National Weather Service in Reno, Nev., has only issued eight blizzard warnings since 2002. The last warning in the Tahoe area was almost exactly a year ago: Feb. 27, 2023.
During last year’s storm, two feet of snow fell in less than 24 hours, which, combined with earlier snows, made it challenging to distinguish houses from snow banks. Winds up to 50 miles per hour combined with the light snow made it difficult to see things only feet away.

Congress reaches deal to punt government shutdown
Lawmakers have reached a deal to extend government funding by a week to give themselves time to pass annual spending bills, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: It's the culmination of months of negotiations to try to bridge a wide gap between House Republicans and Senate Democrats.
What we're hearing: The House plans to vote Thursday on a continuing resolution to extend government funding deadlines from March 1 and 8 to March 8 and 22, according to House GOP sources.
The House will then try to pass six appropriations bills – Agriculture; Commerce; Justice and Science; Interior; Military Construction and Veterans Affairs; and Energy and Water.
The bills will be voted on in two packages to speed up the process, the sources said.
What we're watching: GOP hardliners are already railing against the plan, signaling a rough road ahead for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
"The message we need to send to the Senate is either pass a conservative [spending bill] with true spending restraints/cuts and HR 2 border policies or SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT," Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) told Axios in a text.
Johnson has framed the continuing resolution as a way to give negotiators room to work out the last technical issues on spending bills.

Trump immunity claim Top US court agrees to hear case in April
The Supreme Court will decide if ex-President Donald Trump is immune from being prosecuted on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election.
The 6-3 conservative majority court decided on Wednesday to hear Mr Trump's claims that he should be shielded from criminal liability.
The ruling marks the first time the court has weighed in on such a case.
A US Court of Appeals panel has already rejected Mr Trump's argument that he enjoys presidential immunity.
Mr Trump had claimed in the landmark legal case that he was immune from all criminal charges for acts he said fell within his duties as president.
But the appeals court ruled unanimously against the 77-year-old, writing that: "We cannot accept former President Trump's claim that a president has unbounded authority to commit crimes that would neutralise the most fundamental check on executive power - the recognition and implementation of election results."
He appealed the case to the Supreme Court and asked to put that decision on hold.
On his Truth Social site, Mr Trump welcomed Wednesday's decision and contended that without immunity "Presidents will always be concerned, and even paralyzed, by the prospect of wrongful prosecution and retaliation after they leave office".
"This could actually lead to the extortion and blackmail of a President," he wrote.
Mr Trump was charged last year with witness tampering and conspiracy to defraud the US in federal court in Washington DC over his attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
Jack Smith, who was appointed as special counsel in the investigation, brought the charges against Mr Trump, and pushed for the trial to be held this year.
The court could have let the appellate court judgement stand, which would have allowed the trial proceedings to resume.
Instead, a minimum of four of the nine justices voted to take up the case. That suggests that there is some debate within the court on whether Mr Trump has some immunity from prosecution.
The decision has the potential to seriously delay the trial, which was originally scheduled for March.
Arguments in the Supreme Court case are scheduled for the week of 22 April, and any trial will have to wait until after a decision is made.
Although a decision could come swiftly, the justices could rule that the former president is immune from prosecution, or issue a decision that further delays legal action.
Justice Department guidelines limit prosecutorial action in politically sensitive investigations from within 60 days of an election - meaning prosecutors face a deadline of early September.
And if Mr Trump wins in November, there is a growing possibility that the case never reaches trial. His Justice Department officials could drop or indefinitely suspend the special counsel investigation or he could take the unprecedented step of issuing a pardon for himself.
The Republican front-runner candidate for president is facing a host of other federal and state criminal charges.
The former president is facing a trial starting in late March on charges of falsifying business records over hush-money payment he made to a porn star.
The Supreme Court is also hearing arguments in a separate case weighing whether Mr Trump can be disqualified from running for a second term under the 14th Amendment's "insurrection ban."
Mr Trump has pleaded not guilty in all the cases, frequently referring to them as political "witch hunts".

Supreme Court to decide Trump immunity claim further delaying election subversion trial
The Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to decide whether Donald Trump may claim immunity in special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case, adding another explosive appeal from the former president to its docket and further delaying his federal trial.
The court expedited the case and will hear arguments the week of April 22.
The move puts the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination on track for another high-stakes date with the high court, which earlier this month heard arguments in a separate case questioning whether Trump disqualified himself from running for a second term under the 14th Amendment’s “insurrection ban.”
