To catch Spotted spotted grunters on topwater lures can be really challenging and certainly one of the most difficult species to catch on lure in South Africa. I only had about an hour to fish so I tried my luck with a spotted grunter in the estuary. Typical grunter behaviour tested my patients with the grunter feeding actively around me and showed little to no interest in my lure. we experienced one crazy morning! the fish went absolutely wild! Huge Garrick and shad chased the baitfish right to our feet. Galjoen and barman was our targeted species for the day! Upon arrival we instantly realised that the swell is much bigger than what was forecasted. this would make it much more difficult to catch the species that we are after! well like any other fishing day we where still optimistic and gave it our best shot. fishing the one spot after the other to find some fish. being a tough day next to the water we knew the best we can do is to scratch around and try every little sand bank, gutter and basically any structure that we could find that we think could hold a fish. Eventually we found some fish but definitely not the quantity and quality we where after. Xandré had a slow start to the trip in Angola. He had all the bad luck in the world the first fe days! He battled to reach the Garrick and eventually when he hooks one something stupid will happen like the hook will just pull and he would end up losing the fish! He never gave up and made throw after throw! till eventually his luck turned and he started to catch the one fish after the other! We started our journey from Cape Town to Flamingo lodge in the south of Angola early the morning. we drove three days from sunrise to sunset. on the way there was lots to see, the beautiful sunsets of Africa is just spectacular. Driving through Namibia to enter Angola is an amazing sight. once in Angola we had to stop at Christ the King or as it is know as well Christ the redeemer. then next was down the amazing Sarah de Leba pass! I started off fishing Struisbaai near the southern most point of South Africa. The sea in the Indian Ocean where to flat to target white steenbras, so I drove around to Gansbaai to see how the sea is like in the Atlantic Ocean! I went from a very flat sea to a very stormy and messy sea. Luckily I ended up catching a few Galjoen in some extreme weather conditions! The day started off very frustrating as I lost a good number of fish! the bites came but the J hooks did not do their work and as soon as I changed over to circle hooks I started to land every fish that took my bait! Our plan for the day was to fish the beach in search of a variety of species like Glajoen, baardman, kob and White steenbras. using light tackle in the surf zone for these fish can be really fun and one never exactly knows what specie is going to eat your bait next! With the flat and clean sea the red roman like to bite! not this day! I went fishing with Gerhard from Mulloway Charters to look for some red roman and Galjoen. While Gerhard was targeting and catching some Galjoen I fished for some red Roman in the deep water amongst the reef. Fishing on our last day at Nqabara in the Transkei was incredible! we learnt a lot from the previous couple of days and it finally all came together! After getting to know the around this fishing paradise in the Transkei, we knew what to do and where to go! Our targeted species for the day was Kob and Poensies also known as Black mussel crackers! We waited for the right tide the morning to get to the reefs where these fish hang around! we immediately got into the fish from the first throw! the Nqabara area in the Transkei is truly a hidden fishing paradise in South Africa! In episode two of our fishing trip in the Transkei we found a shoal of kob! Nqabara is truly a fishing paradise, Being such a remote fishing spot it is a real gem! we start the day of by scratching for blue fish or as the are known bronze bream. After a very successful morning with the blue fish we packed up and went on the hunt for some kob water to see if we can catch some kob. Whilst fishing for hammer head sharks an unexpected large wave nearly washed me from the rocks while I had a shark on the other end of my line! it was a really close one! I could've been badly injured or even worse.... I went fishing with Xandré, the idea was to target some hammer head sharks from the rocks as the sea was really flat and clean. I took my son, Xandré to fish for some Garrick in the nearby estuary! I knew the Garrick were there, but I wasn't expecting them to be this wild! We had an early start to the morning, the day started of a bit on the slow side with the tide being a little bit too high. As the tide dropped the fished moved down the estuary and gave us a really entertaining time! we had lots of fun with the light tackle and smaller lures targeting and catching garrick! As most of you know, targeting kob must be my most favourite facet of angling! My brother came to visit and we had a beautiful weather build up for the kob, so obviously this would be our targeted species. with the south east wind blowing we headed to the beach to target kob or as they are known in Australia mulloway or jewfish.
