The 2000 rupee note is not banned in India. It was introduced in 2016 as part of a government initiative to combat counterfeit currency. However, the RBI announced on May 20, 2023 that it would be withdrawing the 2000 rupee note from circulation. The notes will remain legal tender until September 30, 2023, after which they will no longer be accepted as legal tender. The RBI said that the decision was taken as part of its "Clean Note Policy" that aims to ensure availability of good quality banknotes for the public.
