So you will see a lot of videos on this topic (Smartphone, Apps, Android and IOS, Games, Tools and accessories...) I try to shoot at least one video a week. And thanks for stopping by.
Samsung Galaxy F54
Same, but different (but mostly same) - the Galaxy A54 is proof that you don't make changes to a winning formula. Or that's how Samsung sees it, at least. Whether we're entirely on board with that - you'll need to give the following pages a read to find out.
Right off the bat, the A54's MSRP of roughly €500 is sure to raise a few eyebrows. But don't get all riled up just yet - the A53 5G's launch pricing was, in fact, fairly similar to the A54's, but the numbers do tend to drop sharply in just a month or two, so we'll be somewhat inclined to treat them with more of an open mind.
Examining the specsheet to find the differences in the substance, we're noticing there's more of it - the new model has passed the 200g weight threshold, if only just. The slightly reduced screen diagonal makes that all the more surprising, particularly since battery capacity has remained the same.
The chipset is new; that much is clear. The extra 100 in this Exynos 1380 means two additional powerful cores in the CPU and an extra GPU core compared to the 1280 in the old model. That is shaping up to be the most significant hardware improvement this year and may very well be worth a few grams.
Gone is the depth sensor (unlikely to be missed), and the triple camera setup on the back is now headlined by a 50MP unit in place of the 64MP one of the A53 5G. The nominal decrease in resolution doesn't mean much, so we're not looking at it as a downgrade going into this. The ultrawide and the macro camera appear unchanged, as does the selfie camera.
No change can be a good thing too, of course. Take for example the IP67 rating - Galaxy A-series midranges have offered dust and water resistance for a few generations now, and the A54 continues along that path. You also get stereo speakers as before, and the microSD slot survives for yet another year.

Samsung Galaxy A54 unboxing
The A54's retail package is barebones as last year - the A52(s) were the last ones to include a power adapter in the box. The accessories you get with the A54 are limited to a SIM eject tool and a USB-C cable (a white one).
For what it's worth, the fact that you still have a cable in the box means you can 'save' on buying one when getting a charger - that's as close as we'll get to a silver lining.

Sony Xperia 1 V
There are many flagship phones to choose from nowadays, but there is just one made for both casual and professional photographers. It's the one with a timeless design with excellent grip, top-notch cameras with a hardware shutter key, a 4K display, and front-facing stereo speakers. Yes, it's a Sony Xperia 1, the fifth of its line.
The Sony Xperia 1 V is an incremental upgrade over the Xperia 1 IV, but given how good that one was, there is no surprise. Still, the 1 V brings the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, now with a better cooling system and a promise for less throttling and no overheating. There is an improved primary camera with a multi-aspect 52MP sensor, plus, drum rolls, Night mode is now available!
The design has been thoughtfully improved, and you are looking at the only non-rugged smartphone that deserves a Perfect mark for grip. The Xperia 1 V has two Gorilla Glass Victus panels, and the rear one is matte with a dotted pattern for extra grip. The metal frame is all ridged, too, and this is how a premium phone can provide an outstanding grip experience without giving up on looks.
The 4K OLED display is here to stay, and so are the front-facing stereo speakers - now featuring an improved amplifier for richer sound. The lovely haptic feedback the Xperias are known for is available, too.
Let's talk about the camera. The primary imager got a massive update with a multi-aspect 52MP Sony sensor with an effective 48MP resolution. Thanks to the new stacked architecture, it should offer the noise performance and the dynamic range of a full-frame camera (in the dark), according to Sony.
The rest of the cameras remain the same as on the Xperia 1 V - a 12MP telephoto with a 3.5x-5.2x continuous optical zoom, a 12MP ultrawide-angle with autofocus, and a 12MP selfie camera with a fixed focus. All rear cameras support 4K120 capturing, while the front one maxes out at 4K60.
The Sony Xperia 1 V is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, and it supports 30W wired charging, plus both wireless and reverse wireless charging. The phone runs on Android 13 with Xperia UI.
And here are the complete specs.
Sony Xperia 1 V specs at a glance:
Body: 165.0x71.0x8.3mm, 187g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus), aluminum frame; IP65/IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min).
Display: 6.50" OLED, 1B colors, 120Hz, HDR BT.2020, 1644x3840px resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio, 643ppi; Runs at 1096 x 2560 pixels except for select use cases.
Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm): Octa-core (1x3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 & 2x2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 & 2x2.8GHz Cortex-A710 & 3x2.0 GHz Cortex-A510); Adreno 740.
Memory: 256GB 12GB RAM; UFS 4,0; microSDXC (uses shared SIM slot).
OS/Software: Android 13, Xperia UI.
Rear camera: Wide (main): 52 MP, f/1.9, 24mm, 1/1.35", 1.12µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS; Telephoto: 12 MP, f/2.3, 85mm, f/2.8, 125mm, 1/3.5", Dual Pixel PDAF, 3.5x-5.2x continuous optical zoom, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 12 MP, f/2.2, 124˚, 16mm, 1/2.5", Dual Pixel PDAF.
Front camera: 12 MP, f/2.0, 24mm (wide), 1/2.9", 1.25µm.
Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@24/25/30/60/120fps HDR, 1080p@30/60/120fps; 5-axis gyro-EIS, OIS; Front camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 5-axis gyro-EIS.
Battery: 5000mAh; 30W wired, PD3.0, PPS, 50% in 30 min (advertised), Wireless, Reverse wireless.
Connectivity: Dual SIM 5G; eSIM; Wi-Fi 6; BT 5.3, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive; NFC; 3.5mm jack.
Misc: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); front-facing stereo speakers; Native Sony Alpha camera support (Creator app).
We are thrilled to see that Sony is keeping alive the microSD expansion and the 3.5mm audio jack, and we love its persistence in having notch-free screens. The symmetrical front speakers are a Sony trademark, too, one that we are quite fond of.
There is one thing that has been retired on the Xperia 1 V is the tiny notification LED. We suspect that Sony still cannot offer a dynamic refresh rate, which is essential for better battery life, but we will talk about that in a bit.

Samsung Galaxy A34 vs Samsung Galaxy A33
The Galaxy A34 is here and is doing its best to continue building on top of a successful value formula. The A34 is not unlike the A33 5G before it, but there are a few noteworthy differences.
Another notable change is the chipset. Instead of relying on an in-house Exynos chipset like last year, Samsung went for a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chip this time. That's one exciting development, given that the Galaxy A54 did get a new Samsung Exynos 1380 chip.
.................................
Samsung Galaxy A34 specs at a glance:
Body: 161.3x78.1x8.2mm, 199g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass 5), plastic frame, plastic back; IP67 dust/water resistant (up to 1m for 30 min).
Display: 6.60" Super AMOLED, 120Hz, 1080x2340px resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 390ppi.
Chipset: Mediatek MT6877V Dimensity 1080 (6 nm): Octa-core (2x2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); Mali-G68 MC4.
Memory: 128GB 6GB RAM, 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM; microSDXC (uses shared SIM slot).
OS/Software: Android 13, One UI 5.1.
Rear camera: Wide (main): 48 MP, f/1.8, 26mm, 1/2.0", 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 8 MP, f/2.2, 123-degree, 1/4.0", 1.12µm; Macro: 5 MP, f/2.4.
Front camera: 13 MP, f/2.2, (wide), 1/3.1", 1.12µm.
Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720p@480fps; Front camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps.
Battery: 5000mAh; 25W wired.
Misc: Fingerprint reader (under the display, optical); stereo speakers; Virtual proximity sensing.
The A34 has grown noticeably. It now has a 6.6-inch diagonal, up from 6.4 inches in last year's model, and it's now got a more extensive and heavier body. This means the A34 is now bigger even than the current Galaxy A54.
The display on the new A34 is not only bigger but is now also faster at a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also shorter and wider at a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with smaller bezels. Aside from these changes, the Galaxy A54 makes sure to stick closely to an already-established formula without significant deviations. Some important specs highlights still include an IP67 ingress protection rating and a stereo speaker setup. The Galaxy A54 also retains its large 5,000 mAh battery with 25W fast charging. Its camera looks mostly unchanged from last year, with a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, a 5MP macro cam, and a 13MP selfie. No depth sensor this time around, though. The Galaxy A33 is keeping the 90Hz Super AMOLED screen of the Galaxy A32, but it employs a much more powerful Exynos 1280 chipset with a newer processor and gaming-friendly graphics. And there is an integrated 5G modem, too, so now you won't have to choose between 4G and 5G versions.
The camera has been improved, too. Now the 48MP primary features optical stabilization and supports up to 4K video capturing. The 13MP selfie camera can do 4K videos, too.
The Galaxy A33 also brings stereo speakers, something that was reserved for the A5x and higher models in the previous generations. And finally, but not least important, the Galaxy A33 now supports faster 25W wired charging.
Let's go through the full specs sheet now.
Samsung Galaxy A33 5G specs at a glance:
Body: 159.7x74.0x8.1mm, 186g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass 5), plastic frame, plastic back; IP67 dust/water resistant (up to 1m for 30 mins).
Display: 6.40" Super AMOLED, 90Hz, 1080x2400px resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, 411ppi.
Chipset: Exynos 1280 (5 nm): Octa-core (2x2.4 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); Mali-G68.
Memory: 128GB 4GB RAM, 128GB 6GB RAM, 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM; microSDXC (uses shared SIM slot).
OS/Software: Android 12, One UI 4.1.
Rear camera: Wide (main): 48 MP, f/1.8, 26mm, 1/2.0", 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 8 MP, f/2.2, 123˚, 1/4.0", 1.12µm; Macro: 5 MP, f/2.4; Depth: 2 MP, f/2.4.
Front camera: 13 MP, f/2.2, (wide), 1/3.1", 1.12µm.
Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/120fps; Front camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps.
Battery: 5000mAh; Fast charging 25W.
Misc: Fingerprint reader (under the display, optical); Stereo speakers; Virtual proximity sensing.
It's not all updates, though, as two things have changed for the worse since the Galaxy A32. The Galaxy A33 has no audio jack, and the microSD bed is now shared with the second SIM option.
Still, we have to say we are intrigued by the Galaxy A33 5G as it has been clearly promoted in rank and now can be considered as part of the premium mid-rangers like the Galaxy A53 and A73.
Samsung's Galaxy A mid-range lineup has undergone its yearly refresh, and it's looking really good. The new Galaxy A33 is probably one of the most interesting models this year as it has been significantly upgraded since the Galaxy A32 and makes for an excellent bang for the buck offer at the €300 mark.
The Galaxy A33 5G has been promoted to the waterproofed league, and it now features the same IP67-rated ingress protection treatment as the higher-tier models.
