TMB40 - Christopher Adams - Digital Detox, Transformation, and the Quest for Truth
Welcome to Episode 40 of The Mental Breakthrough, featuring the return of my friend Christopher Adams for what I consider our first official podcast discussion. Our journey together dates back to our teenage years in junior college wrestling, sharing experiences both in sports and life. In this episode, Christopher and I dive into a profoundly personal topic: his recent journey of self-discovery and transformation.
Christopher has just emerged from a 31-day digital blackout and detox from alcohol, a significant step following his shift away from Suboxone, initially used to combat opioid use. Our conversation navigates through his path from functional drinking to reaching a pivotal moment of change. We explore the depths of his experience at a Christian detox center, which marked a turning point for him, leading to what he describes as becoming a new man.
Our discussion touches on various themes, including our perspectives on Christianity. While I have historically held reservations about certain aspects of Christian doctrine, particularly the conceptualization of God, our dialogue reveals shared cultural values and a mutual quest for objective truth. This theme has increasingly emerged in my conversations, not only with Christians but with individuals of various religious and philosophical backgrounds.
We also delve into the practical aspects of Christopher’s life - his family, new home, and the journey to becoming the best version of himself. His story, partly influenced by being 'tricked' into the rehab process, unfolds with honesty and insight, demonstrating the unforeseen benefits of such an experience.
This episode isn't just about Christopher's story; it's a reflection on the broader themes of self-improvement, truth-seeking, and the power of introspection versus external guidance. We discuss the importance of questioning beliefs, testing theories, and the value of long-form conversations in uncovering deeper truths.
As I look forward to future discussions and interactions, both in this podcast and in life, I invite you to join this journey of exploration and understanding. Whether you're compelled to share your thoughts, challenge perspectives, or simply listen, there's a place in this conversation for you.

TMB39 - Brodie Farber X2 - Delving Deep in a Disrupted World
Welcome to Episode 39 of The Mental Breakthrough, where I am joined again by Brodie Farber, a familiar face from my mixed martial arts days. In this episode, we delve into the current state of the world, discussing the whirlwind of events unfolding around us.
Our conversation traverses our individual life trajectories, spanning the time before we knew each other, our shared experiences in training, and our paths since then. Despite our geographical distance and diverging journeys, we've maintained a connection, united by our awareness of the significant changes happening in the political, spiritual, and cultural landscapes.
This long-form discussion serves as an outreach to others who share our concerns or hold different views. Brodie and I don't always agree, but we recognize the importance of addressing the unsettling developments we see. As we approach pivotal moments like the upcoming elections, our talk encompasses not just political perspectives but also the deeper cultural and humanistic elements that weave into this complex tapestry of global interconnectivity.
We explore the unique role of podcasting in facilitating these in-depth discussions. In an age dominated by sound bites and quick posts, we stress the necessity of diving deeper to truly understand and articulate our thoughts. This process is not just about sharing ideas but also about refining our ability to communicate them effectively.
As we both seek platforms to voice our thoughts and engage in intellectual discourse, we invite you to join in. Whether by tuning into this conversation, starting your own podcast, or inviting me as a guest on yours, the goal is clear: to engage in meaningful, long-form discussions that explore agreement, objective truth, and the myriad nuances in between.
These conversations are catalysts for ongoing thought, sparking further dialogue and understanding. Remember, there is immense value in simply engaging in these discussions, whether with a loved one or a stranger. So, if you have insights or perspectives to share, I encourage you to join the dialogue.

TMB38 - Josh Converse - Pursuing Truth in Turbulent Times
Welcome to Episode 38 of The Mental Breakthrough, where I'm joined once again by Josh Converse for a multifaceted discussion that spans a wide array of intriguing subjects. Our conversation primarily orbits around Andrew Klavan’s book, "The Truth and Beauty," which Josh generously shared with me along with several other thought-provoking reads.
This episode is much more than a book discussion. It opens doors to broader dialogues about our personal philosophies, beliefs, and the current state of the world. We delve into the origins and impacts of worldviews, exploring the concept of science as a religion. This leads us to an examination of the evolution of philosophical thought, from Locke and Hume to Popper and Kuhn.
Our talk also navigates through atheism, materialism, the quest for objective truth, and the nuances of subjective morality. We ponder over the concept of death and its implications on our current societal constructs, drawing parallels between today's chaotic world and historical tumultuous periods like the French Revolution.
As we touch upon Western culture, we critically assess the perils of radicalism and its influence on politics, education, and the collective psyche. This three-hour conversation is a journey through the realms of culture, the human mind, and so much more.
Join us as we endeavor to build on truth, challenge our understandings, and appreciate the power of thoughtful questioning in these uncertain times. This episode is a testament to the hope that lies in our ability to think critically and engage in meaningful debates. I look forward to continuing these discussions and welcome your thoughts and perspectives.

TMB37 – Paul Binder – Metaphysical Musings & Material Manifestations
Welcome to Episode 37 of The Mental Breakthrough, featuring Paul Binder, a schoolmate from my Oroville, California days. While Paul and I share a history that dates back to elementary and middle school, our reconnection came through social media, leading to this enriching podcast conversation.
Our discussion was ignited by my previous episode with Josh Converse, another high school peer. As Paul listened, he gathered thoughts and ideas, which we further explored on Facebook. Our talk primarily revolves around religion, particularly Christianity, and extends into broader themes like the nature of the universe, delving into metaphysical, philosophical, and psychological depths.
The essence of our dialogue isn’t to debate or prove points but rather to engage in healthy and constructive communication. We touch on the challenges of discussing deeply personal topics like faith and morality, especially given our contrasting personalities – Paul being more introverted and myself leaning towards extroversion, albeit living an introverted lifestyle. These podcasts serve as a vital intellectual outlet for us both.
Paul brings a thought-provoking perspective to the table, reflecting his introspective nature. Our conversation flows seamlessly, with Paul raising specific questions and both of us guiding its direction. This episode highlights the importance of intellectual discourse, regardless of whether one is an introvert or extrovert. Introverts, often profound thinkers, offer invaluable insights which can sometimes be lost in more extroverted forms of expression.
Join us for this episode of The Mental Breakthrough, where deep thinking meets open dialogue, and enjoy the thoughtful journey Paul and I embark on.

TMB35 – Josh Converse – Literature, Liberalism, Life, Werewolves, Worldviews, & Wisdom
Welcome to Episode 35 of The Mental Breakthrough, where I sit down with Josh Converse, a comrade from high school days. Our paths, both shaped in part by the inspiration we drew from a memorable English teacher, Mark McKinnon (RIP), led us to careers in teaching English. However, today's dialogue wasn't just a stroll down memory lane; it was sparked by a provocative Facebook post Josh shared about atheism and the nature of randomness.
In this episode, we navigate through our shared histories and the journeys that followed high school. Josh, an intellectual and creative thinker, also an author with his unique take on werewolves, brings a distinctive perspective to our conversation. We traverse a broad spectrum of topics, including life experiences and the complexities of contemporary societal issues. A particular focus is the shifting political identities in the wake of recent global events and the redefinition of liberal versus conservative values.
Diving deep into discussions about morality, cultural dynamics, and the essence of our beliefs, we scrutinize the dangers of relativism and the need for foundational truths although differing in the approach. The backdrop of the covid era brings a personal reflection on the ideologies I’ve previously held and a reevaluation of where I now stand politically.
Our discussion wraps around to the profound topic of death and the lasting introspection it provokes. After a rich 2.5-hour dialogue that kept us engaged and introspective, we left with more to ponder.
This episode is an invitation for listeners to delve into their own discussions, challenge ideas, and embrace the opportunity for growth. If you hear something that sparks a thought or you feel there's a point to be debated, I am open to continuing this dialogue. Such conversations are fundamental for personal development and societal advancement.

TMB34 – Jim Ponzo – Mats, Mechanics, Memories, Takedowns, Technology, & Talks
Join us on the 34th episode of The Mental Breakthrough, where I welcome Jim Ponzo, a connection forged through the bonds of martial arts. This episode takes us through a fascinating journey back to the Sacramento martial arts scene in the '80s and '90s—a time that Jim and many like him consider to be the pioneering days that birthed what is now known as Mixed Martial Arts.
Jim, an engineer by profession, draws interesting parallels between his world of engineering and the martial arts community, emphasizing how martial arts serve as a unique nexus, bringing together individuals from disparate walks of life and professions. Our dialogue takes a deep dive into the culture-shaping nature of martial arts, exploring its impact in places like Japan and Thailand, and its ability to transcend cultural barriers.
Throughout this three-hour discussion, we not only reminisce about the past but also touch upon various philosophical musings and observe the transformation of Western and global dynamics over the years. Thanks to social media, Jim and I, though never extremely close, have maintained a thread of connection, leading us to this rich and engaging conversation from opposite sides of the world.
This exchange aims to showcase the art of healthy conversation. In a time where dialogue seems to be dwindling, one of my goals is to reignite discussions—be it with close ones, distant friends, or acquaintances where a spark of connection still lingers. It's my hope that this conversation will inspire you to reach out and rekindle those ties. Enjoy the episode.

TMB33 – Robert Habibi X7 – Dementia, Dimension, & Dynamics
Welcome to the 33rd episode of The Mental Breakthrough. Once again, I'm joined by the ever-insightful Robert Habibi for our 7th discussion together. This episode delves deeply into personal territory. I shed light on my week, touching on my farming adventures. However, our primary focus is on the journey of my mother, who is living with dementia. Currently residing in a supportive care resort center, she's forging new connections, most notably with a boyfriend. Their interactions, reminiscent of youthful courtship, have led to some heartwarming and, at times, amusing situations, especially given his tendency to forget our prior introductions. Their budding relationship paints a picture of life and love in the face of memory loss.
As we anticipate bringing my mother to our special BBQ camp for a Halloween Extravaganza, our conversation broadens. We delve into the complexities of dementia, the challenges of aging, and the role I've assumed in supporting my mother through this phase of her life. The discussion becomes a contemplative exploration of the deeper psychological, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions intertwined with these experiences. I believe our talk offers profound insights and reflections, and I sincerely hope you find valuable takeaways from it.

TMB32 – Robert Habibi X6 – Development, Decisions, & Devotion
Welcome back to the 32nd episode of The Mental Breakthrough! In this installment, Robert Habibi graces us once again, marking our sixth enlightening conversation together.
We kick things off with a personal touch, delving into the realms of human development and evolution. As a new father, I've been granted the privilege of experiencing life's firsts through the eyes of my three-year-old son. This week, we ventured out together, just the two of us, marking a significant father-son bonding milestone. We spend the first half of our episode unraveling the intricacies of this experience, touching upon attachment psychology, child-rearing, and developmental insights.
As we transition, we address feedback from a dear friend, Ross, who offers a fresh perspective on some of our previous discussions. Together, we dive into the nuances between psychopathy and sociopathy and grapple with the multifaceted systems that govern society. What delineates control from necessary governance? How do those in leadership positions make tough calls that might necessitate sacrificing the few for the benefit of the many?
Deep and contemplative, our discourse culminates in a profound realization: at the heart of it all is love. Yet, while we've found an answer, the eternal question remains elusive.
Join us on this introspective journey as we seek understanding and navigate the complexities of life.

TMB30 – Robert HabibiX5 – Dialectic, Darkness, & Discovery
Welcome back to "The Mental Breakthrough," Episode 30, where I dive deep into weekly discussions with Robert Habibi. Our conversations are spontaneous and refreshing, with Robert always bringing something unique to the table that often I'm unaware of. This week was a heartfelt one; we journeyed into the emotional topic of my beloved cat, Meesap, nearing the end of his life. This led us into a deeper conversation about the importance of children experiencing the cycle of life and death through pets.
Our discussions didn't stop there. We ventured into Habibi's experiences at the Esalen Institute, once a hub for countercultural movements and now known as a center for personal growth. This topic emerged due to a previous guest, Ross Clift, and his curiosity regarding various conspiracy theories associated with the institute.
Questioning societal narratives, we delved into the world of conspiracy theories and how sometimes challenging a mainstream narrative can result in a label. Our dialogues are often exploratory, where we suggest and weigh different hypotheses. One particularly intriguing topic was the potential role of AI in influencing global decisions.
It's essential to remember that our theories are ever-evolving, shaped by the insights we gather. While we occasionally wander into the darker territories of our topics, our aim is always to end on a high note. After all, humanity has faced and thrived amidst challenges throughout its evolution. We believe in the strength of post-traumatic growth over stagnation. So, if you're in for a journey of exploring theories, understanding humanity, and always seeking that positive note even in adversity, join us. Until next time on "The Mental Breakthrough."

TMB31 – Alvaro Fernandez – BJJ, Becoming, Balance, Mindfulness, Mastery & Masculinity
Welcome to Episode 31 of The Mental Breakthrough. Today's guest is Alvaro Fernandez, an inspiring individual I had the pleasure of getting to know through a mutual friend who's deeply rooted in martial arts and philosophy. It's not every day you encounter someone who truly understands the intricate harmony between the mind and body. While many merely utter this as a cliche, for Alvaro, it’s a way of life. He embodies the belief that mastering one’s mind is essential to mastering the body.
Alvaro’s journey is a tapestry of experience: from motorbike racing, emphasizing the importance of being wholly present, to delving deep into martial arts since childhood. His discipline led him to meditation and eventually achieving a black belt in jiu-jitsu. His commitment to self-growth doesn't stop there; Alvaro is actively involved in aiding others in their self-development journey.
A significant portion of our conversation delved into masculinity. Fresh from a transformative trip to America, Alvaro shared insights from the Sacred Sons event that he attended. We explored the evolution of masculinity, delving into archetypes such as the magician, king, lover, and warrior. Alvaro's early involvement with the 4th Way meditation practice, rooted in mindfulness and relevant to everyday living, also played a vital role in our discussion.
It's essential to realize that true masculinity also involves embracing emotions and understanding the delicate balance between masculine and feminine energies. We stayed away from the murky waters of current political theater but acknowledged the pressing need for such conversations.
Alvaro's life experiences offer wisdom that listeners can integrate into their lives. While the podcast might not have the largest following, its essence is genuine. It’s about real conversations and real people. If you're listening or watching, I invite you to engage, be a part of this movement. As Alvaro's teacher aptly put, continual learning shapes our evolution. So, lean in, grow with us, and enjoy this enlightening episode.

TMB28 – Robert Habibi X4 – Roots, Reflections, and Realizations
Welcome to the 28th installment of The Mental Breakdown. In a delightful twist, my frequent guest Robert Habibi, joining us for the 4th time, takes the reins and interrogates my psyche. This episode unfurls organically as Robert prompts me about my week, which then blossoms into a more profound discussion about Earthroot - the project I'm passionately cultivating.
Earthroot is my envisioned human sanctuary, not only a testament to my connection with nature but also the place I aspire to rest at life's end. As I narrate, my plans span the next 17 years, meticulously planting fruit trees and crafting walkways, culminating around 2040 when I turn 60. This year heralds a significant pivot in my life, shifting away from online teaching and therapy to be entirely engulfed by nature. Yet, with technology's unpredictable advances, who knows? Perhaps the 'Earthroot metaverse' could be our meeting hub!
During our chat, Robert shared his enriching experiences, drawing parallels with a garden retreat he once associated with. It's intriguing how his insights assist me in crystallizing my ideas about Earthroot. However, I cherish the fluidity of thought and steer clear of imposing rigid structures on this vision.
This candid exchange aims not just to offer clarity to me but hopefully enlighten our listeners about life, dreams, and the journeys we undertake. If you feel a pull to share your narrative or are curious about mine, I'm eager to host new voices. Reach out to me on X @CDsuntree or explore other contact options I might include in the links. TMB24 - Brodie Farber - Memories, Martial Arts, Mountains, Family, Fun, & Future Gatherings
THE MENTAL BREAKDOWN (Ep. 24)
Welcome to episode 24 of The Mental Breakdown. Today, I have the pleasure of chatting with Brodie Farber, a pivotal figure in my life for several transformative reasons. Our paths crossed at Sierra College Wrestling; while I was on the mat, Brodie, a martial artist, had identified the potential of wrestlers in the world of mixed martial arts and sought to enhance his skills. It was during this time that my curiosity about the no-hold-bar fights in places like Mexico and Arizona that Brodie participated in grew. With his connections, Brodie helped me venture into the world of fighting, kickstarting a series of events that would later play significant roles in our lives.
As the world of mixed martial arts grew, Brodie and I carved our paths, occasionally reconnecting to share experiences and stories. Among the most significant of Brodie's contributions was introducing me to a gym in Thailand during the twilight of my fighting career. This introduction not only shaped the next phase of my life as an English teacher in Thailand but also influenced my journey into fatherhood and my pursuit of organic farming.
Despite our differing lifestyles – Brodie, living in the mountains as a hunter and me, a vegan embracing organic farming in Thailand – there's an undeniable connection. Both of us have chosen paths that emphasize living off the land, finding solace away from the conventional societal norms. Our discussions span a range of topics: from fatherhood and raising our children, our unique perspectives on death and psychology, and of course, myriad stories from our shared past.
It's been nearly a decade since Brodie and I last met, yet our bond remains. As we reflect on the past, we also ponder the future and the prospect of reconnecting at "The Gathering", an event I plan to host 18 years from now, celebrating all the vital connections I've made throughout my life.
Stay tuned for more episodes, as I'll be catching up with more influential figures from my martial arts journey and my life in the coming days. Enjoy the conversation, and until next time, farewell.

TMB25 - Kiet Se - Kyokushin, Kinship, Culture, War, the World & the Way
Welcome to the 25th episode of "The Mental Breakdown." Today's guest is the unparalleled Kiet Se, my Kyokushin trainer during my MMA journey. We first crossed paths at Sacramento State University when he sought sparring partners. Throughout my travels, Kiet remained a constant ally, aiding me during pivotal fights, particularly in enhancing my handwork for battles like the Pure Combat Championship, where I clinched the world title.
Kiet's own history is captivating. Born in Vietnam in 1974 amidst the chaos of war, his early life was marked by resilience. A daring escape by his father to Japan led to a U.N. intervention, eventually reuniting the family. By 15, Kiet was mastering languages and traditional Karate in Japan. His journey to America started when love blossomed between him and an English teacher, which eventually brought him to Sac State's wrestling room, where we trained in diverse martial arts disciplines.
Our conversation spans a remarkable 3.5 hours, delving into Kiet’s roots, his visions of settling in Northern Vietnam, our shared martial arts experiences, and deeper reflections on life, politics, psychology, and the essence of being a martial artist. As we contemplate the future, visions of in-person chats on my land, Earthroot, surrounded by nature, come to mind.
Kiet played an instrumental role in my twenties, influencing various stages of my MMA career. This podcast, at its core, is a tribute to such pivotal connections. Through these episodes, I revisit past allies, retracing our histories and catching up on the present. It's a journey of gratitude, learning, and shared experiences. TMB26 - Nelson Ocampo - Battles, Bonds, Brotherhood, Mischief, Memoirs, & Meditations
Welcome to Episode 26 of The Mental Breakdown, where I sit down with a dear friend and brother, Nelson Ocampo. Our journey began with martial arts, and while our paths are contrasted, they cross and verge closely. We have found profound similarities in our life experiences. In this candid conversation, we delve into a myriad of topics: from the challenges and lessons of drug use, the philosophy of the mind, and martial arts, to discussions on life, death, travel, culture, nature, and thug shit.
A note of caution: while our dialogue is imbued with deep respect and love, it is raw and unfiltered. I always opt for the 'explicit content' label on my episodes to cater to unbridled conversations like this, which might touch on topics sensitive to some listeners. That said, our exchange is fundamentally a heartfelt, introspective exploration of our shared admiration for the earth and the spirit that binds us.
Join us on this introspective journey, retracing our shared memories from living and fighting across the West Coast, to Nelson's adventurous visit to my current homeland. We even recount some mischievous escapades, handled with aplomb by Nelson. From Scrolling to Speaking: The Evolution of Social Media
Dr. CD & Ramzey Prentiss
Welcome to the 20th episode of "The Mental Breakdown." Today, I'm thrilled to introduce Ramzey Prentiss as our guest. Our paths first crossed when I appeared on his martial arts podcast, which forms the basis of our connection. As we've both ventured into podcasting independently, it's provided an intriguing topic for discussion.
Beyond our shared interests in podcasting and martial arts, we also find common ground in parenting and homeschooling, among other things. Our conversations often revolve around these themes, offering unique perspectives and insights.
To me, podcasting represents a fresh take on social media. Rather than merely commenting or reposting, it's a more profound way to connect. Living remotely, almost in a jungle, social media remains my bridge to socializing, and I'm not ready to abandon it. While there are downsides to social media – the endless scrolling, occasional outbursts over a post, or the ever-present lure of negativity – I'm not considering a complete social media blackout just yet. In 18 years when I turn 60, I'll will do it most definitely.
However, at this juncture, I view social media more positively. It's an avenue to reach out and converse with those you might not typically engage with or those dear to you but are spoken to infrequently. Many of my podcast guests are individuals I've met at various life stages, and our discussions frequently touch on these relationships.
As with all episodes of "The Mental Breakdown," expect some twists, turns, and tangents in our conversation. I hope you find it engaging. Enjoy, and take care!

Together, we explore our initial clash where we knew little about each other, and how we stayed connected through social media, commenting on each other's lives. My guest's creation of a Wellness Center is also a topic we delve into, along with reflecting on our memorable 15-minute bout. Beyond the fight, we discuss our shared philosophies, our lives in Arizona and Thailand, and how we've continued to find common ground in the changing landscape of our world. It's a conversation filled with reminiscences, respect, and realizations. Tune in for an amazing talk!
