The manhunt for escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife continues, with all UK police forces and border points on alert for the 21-year-old who escaped from HM Prison Wandsworth on Wednesday. Khalife is charged with terror offences including "collecting information which might be useful to an enemy". It is understood the “enemy” referred to in the charge is Iran. He is also alleged to have left fake bombs at a military base while serving in the Army, and was due to stand trial in November.

Ukraine cyber-operators are being deployed on the front lines of the war, duelling close-up with their Russian counterparts in a new kind of high-tech battle. "We have people who are directly involved in combat," says Illia Vitiuk, the head of the Ukrainian Security Service's (SBU) cyber department. Speaking inside the heavily protected SBU headquarters, he explains how his teams mix the skills of hackers and special forces - getting inside Russian systems, working alongside snipers and deploying the latest technologies. The department uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) visual recognition systems to analyse information gathered from aerial drones (alongside intelligence from human sources, satellites and other technical sources) to provide targets for the military.

Scientists have grown an entity that closely resembles an early human embryo, without using sperm, eggs or a womb. The Weizmann Institute team say their "embryo model", made using stem cells, looks like a textbook example of a real 14-day-old embryo. It even released hormones that turned a pregnancy test positive in the lab. The ambition for embryo models is to provide an ethical way of understanding the earliest moments of our lives.

Russia says it has downed ‘several’ Ukrainian drones overnight, with one drone reportedly being intercepted close to Moscow. At least two more were intercepted over the southern Rostov region. It comes after at least 17 people, including a child, were killed in an attack on a busy market street in Ukraine's "peaceful city" of Kostyantynivka.

The US has announced it will send controversial weapons to Ukraine as part of more than $1bn (£800m) in military and humanitarian aid. Russia condemned the move to equip US Abrams tanks with shells strong enough to pierce conventional tank armour. They are made of depleted uranium - a by-product of uranium enrichment stripped of most radioactive material. Overnight, suspected Ukrainian drone attacks were reported on the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and near Moscow.

For almost a decade a civil war has been grinding on in Yemen, pushing the Arab world’s poorest country to the brink of collapse. There has been less violence since a ceasefire last year but there is no sign of a deal to end the conflict. The BBC first featured Ahmed, an 11-year-old boy who is blind, two years ago when he was teaching a class in a bombed-out school close to the front line. Orla Guerin and her team returned to the city of Taiz to find out how he was getting on.

A huge manhunt is underway for a former British soldier suspected of terrorism offences, after he carried out a daring escape from prison on a food delivery van. Daniel Abed Khalife, who is 21, was in custody at one of London’s biggest prisons, HMP Wandsworth, awaiting trial accused of leaving fake bombs at a military base. He’s also accused of working for a hostile state and collecting information useful to an enemy. It is believed he escaped from the prison kitchen by strapping himself to the underside of the vehicle that had been delivering food supplies. The public are advised not to approach him. UK police Counter Terrorism Command confirmed that UK border points had been put on high alert with checks at airports and ports. At least 16 people have been killed in a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka. President Volodymyr Zelensky, who blamed Russia, said those killed were "people who did nothing wrong" - and warned the death toll could increase. Kostyantynivka, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, is near the front line.

The global cost of living crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine on food prices has hit families around the world. None more so than in Bangladesh, which last year hiked fuel prices by 50% overnight. It led to a steep rise in the cost of basic food items like rice and vegetables.

The Proud Boys' former leader Enrique Tarrio has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. It is the longest sentence handed down so far over the attack, which happened as lawmakers were certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory.

A new Russian drone strike has hit Ukrainian port facilities in the Izmail area on the River Danube, killing one person, the local governor said. Port and agricultural infrastructure was damaged in the overnight attack, according to Oleh Kiper, governor of the surrounding Odesa region. There was no immediate comment from Moscow on the reported new attack.

Sara Sharif's father and stepmother claim they are willing to co-operate with UK authorities in a video - their first public contact since her death. The 10-year-old's body was found at her home in Woking, Surrey, on 10 August. Police want to speak to her father Urfan Sharif, his partner Beinash Batool and brother Faisal Malik in relation to the death. They are known to have travelled to Pakistan from the UK on 9 August and police have been unable to locate them.

The head coach of Spain’s Women’s World Cup winning side, Jorge Vilda has been sacked, as the Luis Rubiales kiss scandal continues. Spain’s win was overshadowed by their football federation president Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso after the final - which she said was not consensual - and Rubiales’s refusal to resign led to most of Vilda’s coaching staff resigning, and 81 players refusing to play. Vilda was spotted applauding Rubiales at the Spanish federation’s extraordinary general assembly earlier in August - when Rubiales repeatedly insisted he would not resign and said he would offer Vilda a new deal - though he has since criticised his behaviour. Last year, Vilda survived a player ‘revolt’ when 15 players submitted identical emails saying they would not play for him unless "significant" concerns over their "emotional state" and "health" were addressed.

Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska has spoken about the emotional impact the war has had on her family in an interview with the BBC. "This may be a bit selfish, but I need my husband, not a historical figure, by my side," she said. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the former comedy scriptwriter spent months hiding in secret locations with her children. As she returned to public life, the war thrust Ms Zelenska into the spotlight, and she has since travelled the world to meet leaders and give speeches.

Growing numbers of children globally are being pulled out of school and into work, the head of the UN's labour body has told the BBC, putting their futures at risk. It comes as economic problems hit families around the world. The world is at a “critical moment” when it comes to child labour, says Gilbert Houngbo, head of the International Labour Organization. He tells the BBC the Covid pandemic led to an increase in children being put to work and that economic problems, including the rising cost of living, have now added to the problem. At its worst, he says children are being put into jobs where they are sexually exploited. In the first of a series on the impact on children of the global cost of living crisis, Barbara Plett Usher reports from Kenya about the growing number of children pushed into the sex trade.

Heavy rain has caused major flooding across Spain with Madrid, Toledo and Cádiz regions especially badly affected. A number of people have lost their lives after become trapped in flood waters. Residents in Madrid have been asked to stay at home due to "the exceptional and abnormal" rainfall, the city’s mayor said. The record amounts of rainfall were due to a slow-moving storm. The rains have caused mudslides on many roads and train services have been suspended in affected areas. The extreme rain follows a scorching summer in Spain and much of southern Europe. Climate scientists are warning that extreme weather events are becoming far more common due to global warming. Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Guy Hedgecoe in Madrid.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov has been dismissed from his post, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying it is time for "new approaches" in the defence ministry. The 57-year-old had led the ministry since before the start of Russia’s invasion, and Ukrainian media has speculated that he will become Kyiv's new ambassador in London, where he has developed good relations with senior politicians. But his dismissal has not come as a complete surprise, amid a wider anti-corruption drive in Mr Zelensky's administration - which has been seen as essential to Ukraine's ambitions to join Western institutions like the EU. Rustem Umerov, who runs Ukraine's State Property Fund, has been nominated as Mr Reznikov's successor.

Hundreds of school buildings in England have been forced to close, over fears they were built with RAAC - a type of concrete now known to be prone to collapse. Disruption is expected for pupils, while UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said it is “utterly wrong’ to blame him for failing to act sooner to fix the problem – after a former senior civil servant said the government halved the budget for school repairs in England in 2021. Meanwhile, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has apologised after swearing in "off-the-cuff remarks" after a TV interview, before later saying "nothing is more important than the safety of children and staff".

Thousands of people remain stuck at the Burning Man festival in the US state of Nevada, after torrential rains turned the ground to deep, slippery mud. The festival is held in the Black Rock Desert, which is usually dry and dusty, but this year unusual rainstorms came towards the end of the nine-day event, when the biggest crowds arrive to see the burning of the giant wooden effigy – which has been postponed. But, while the worst of the rains is thought to have passed, it could be several days before the ground dries up enough for people to leave, and as a result, they have been urged to conserve food, water, and fuel.

Iceland is set to resume hunting whales, after its government lifted a summer suspension on the practice, sparking fury from opponents. Only one company in Iceland still hunts whales, and just two other countries – Japan and Norway – allow commercial whaling. But, only Iceland permits the killing of longer fin whales. Fisheries and Foods Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir said she understood the views of most Icelanders who want an end to whaling, and the lifting of the suspension comes with a series of tight new regulations.

Israel is considering tough measures, including the immediate deportation of Eritrean asylum seekers involved in riots, after disorder broke out in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Some 170 people were injured in violent clashes with police and in-fighting between groups of supporters and opponents of the Eritrean regime, and in the aftermath, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "a red line" had been crossed. He also ordered a new plan to remove all African migrants that he described as "illegal infiltrators". Disorder began after activists opposed to the Eritrean government said that they had asked Israeli authorities to cancel an event organised by their country's embassy, and after a police barricade was broken through, officers fired tear gas, stun grenades and live rounds in a bid to restore order. It is estimated that there are about 18,000 asylum seekers from Eritrea in Israel. They say they fled danger, persecution and compulsory military conscription in one of the world's most repressive countries.
