Gorgeous YIDDISH SONGS | Yossi Desser, Musical Guest
You might have heard a bit about the Hasidic Jewish music scene from my previous videos or from browsing YouTube. It’s a wonderful world, and @yossiesty is a wonderful part of it. He’s a Satmar Kiryas Joel native (like me) who has a deep love for special kinds of Jewish songs like Rabbi Yomtov Ehrlich songs, old Yiddish theater songs, the stories around Hasidic niggun and the adaptations of Christmas carols to Yiddish Chanukah Carols.
In this segment, Yossi and I sit down to discuss the stories around some iconic Jewish music and he performs some of it. I invite you to join this holiday-time discussion and to leave a comment! I added the translations to the songs so you can follow along no matter if you understand Yiddish, Hebrew or Hungarian.
Many thanks to Mrs. Dina Storch whose translation of ‘Yom Kippur’ by Yom-Tov Ehrlich was very helpful.
11:15 ‘Ani Mamin’ by a Modzitz Hasid who perished in the holocaust

Can you get drunk on donuts?
You'll probably have a heart attack first.
This is the first I see of alcoholic donuts. I guess it's the Chanukah donut trend of 2023.
I wish you all a Happy Holidays!

Hasidic girls' school rulebook against the music scene
I’ve shared with you a bit about the Hasidic music scene. In my recent review of the Hasidic Girl’s school rule book, I found that their comments of the music scene were quite critical… Stay tuned for an upcoming video where I go into more detail on this.

*UPDATE:* After we filmed this segment, as I was about to share it, Izzy's young mother passed away in a tragic car accident. I am so heartbroken for Izzy and his terrible loss. Hasidic ad || What kind of Shabbes meal is this?
***TURN ON SUBTITLES (CC) FOR TRANSLATION FROM YIDDISH***
This is the new, new age Hasid! The traveling, influencer, modern man who retains a very strong cultural distinction. He speaks Yiddish, eats only the most appropriate foods on shabbes, wears the Hasidic garb -- he's totally a Hasidic Jew from maybe Williamsburg or Boro Park! But he also loves to travel, uses a smartphone, is adept at live streaming culture, and wants to enjoy the finest luxuries when abroad. There are so many businesses cropping up for this new type of Hasidic Jew, and shabbes meals on the go is one of them.
Internally, there's surely a pushback against this new trend. Many in the community frown on this, and the obsession with gluttonous eating, called FRESS, raises a lot of eyebrows or sighs. So if you want to understand this world, you have to take the internet trends in context of the criticisms it gets in the Hasidic world.

A tour of ISRAEL'S Insular Enclave Bnei Brak 🇮🇱
On October 2nd, 2023, just days before the October 7th pogrom in Israel, I had a sweet, enjoyable day in Bnei Brak's Hasidic enclave. Bnei Brak is on the outskirts of the great secular Israeli city of Tel Aviv, and yet it's an insular world of orthodox Jews, or as my guide calls it: a factory. A factory of prayers, of babies, of religion. (of rugalech and tabik)
My tour guide was Eli Benedict, who grew up in Bnei Brak. Although Eli left the fold, he continues to nurse deep connections with this world through his work as a Yiddish researcher, the CEO at YungYidish (see https://www.facebook.com/yiddish.telaviv?mibextid=ZbWKwL), the program director of @LeagueforYiddish and through his close connection to his family. When we visited Eli's childhood home, Eli's parents welcomed us (although they asked not to be filmed) and his wife and child were also there. In my discussion with Eli and his wife, they shared that they come respectfully, that is, they dress modestly, and feel very welcome.
I too felt welcome as we visited all sorts of places in Bnei Brak; the main thoroughfare, the synagogue, a mountaintop, shops, sukkahs, and more. The sun was ruthlessly bright and the neighborhood was quite shabby. I was struck by how much more open people seemed to us than in Hasidic New York. Several people were eager to get in front of the camera to give this or that opinion on whatever topic they cared about. As a 'student' of the Hasidic world of New York, the Israeli Hasidic community felt feisty, audacious, open, colorful and, shall I say, much poorer than the community in New York. Our videographer, Geert, who had worked in Bnei Brak many times before, said he loved filming there because of how real it is. That stuck with me. It did feel like Bnei Brak put on no airs, and the setting was maybe not pretty but certainly very authentic. I hope that this came through in this video.
Join me for a walk-through of this neighborhood during the lovely holiday Sukkos. Please upvote, leave a comment and share with friends!

Hasidic ad || A Chanukah Ad Gets Made!
***TURN ON SUBTITLES (CC) FOR TRANSLATION FROM YIDDISH***
Hey - guess what; Chanukah is around the corner! It might be a few weeks away, but shops have been selling donuts for weeks!
Here's an old ad from @OnTimeStudios and guess what - there are women in it! Fantastic. I guess all that munching, murmuring and brainstorming led to a brilliant idea: including women in it. Considering that it’s a bit of a risk for these companies to include women (in some cases a huge risk) I appreciate this. I wonder why we haven’t seen more like this since this originally came out 4 years ago.

Rules for Hasidic Girls Issued by Satmar School, Part 1
What are the rules of expectation for Satmar Hasidic girls?
In my most recent documentary on Hasidim and the internet, I showed a few pages of the Satmar Girl's school rulebook. This is the rulebook that contains a great many rules that the school has for its students. Among them are rules on modesty, vacationing, technology, college education, and more. Some people asked to see more of it, so I am here sharing the first half. I hope to share the second half whenever I can.

The surprising saga of Hasidim and the Internet | A Documentary
This is the story of the Hasidic Jews and the internet. In this documentary, I chart the dramatic saga of how different people in the Hasidic community first reacted to the internet, and how the community slowly coalesced on a solution for dealing with the web. Yes, many Hasidic Jews have now accepted the inevitability of the web, and many of them are online. But this is not without caveats and the community's own inventions. Join me for this long-form documentary to learn more. How are standards enforced? What are the standards? What's my personal connection to all of this? I answer as much as possible in a video that tells a story with wider implications than this community alone. It's a story about technology, change, culture, faith, and what it is to be human in the 21st century.

An Orthodox Female Comedian | In Conversation with Leah Forster
Note: my apologies for the poor video quality. This was filmed on Monday after the terrible massacre, and we did our best under the circumstances.
For my channel members - an extended version of this interview here: https://youtu.be/92nDFiyfVU8
Leah Forster spent many years delighting Orthodox female audiences with her comedy. It is hard to overstate her success: she produced CDs, musicals, a ton of live acts, and was a household name among all Hasidic women. She was not only very funny and booked for major women's events, she was also an English teacher in Bais Yaakov for ears. In the last few years, Leah has been on a different path, as she was outed as gay and her place in the community fell apart. In this video, I ask her about her experience as a comedienne, and we talk about the many audiences that she has made laugh.

Livestream update on Israel and the situation in NY
It's been a very hard week since I returned from my trip to Israel. Today, on Friday October 13, we are being warned that there is an official "Day of Jihad" and that Jews should be careful when going outside. In this livestream, I want to share with you: my experience of being in NYC since the horrible attacks from last Saturday, what my experience has been in the anti-zionist Satmar neighborhood in the last few days, and some reflections on my trip to Israel. I also hope to hear your thoughts and take some questions.
Come by Friday 10/13 at 4pm EST.
