The Effects of Using Multiple Diffusion Filters for Photography Lighting
Ever wonder what effects diffusion filters have for softening light? Wonder what it would be like to COMBINE multiple filters at once to soften that light even more?
Join Jason Lanier as he shows you a technique he uses for combining multiple diffusion filters on the front of his lights in cramped indoor locations to get beautiful results.
Please thumbs up, share, leave a comment and subscribe! This shoot was done in Nelson, Nevada using the Rotolight Anova Pro 2 in continuous mode. This technique was especially helpful in the location that Jason shot because it allowed him to put the light in various tight spaces to shoot without worrying about how a modifier would get in the way of his shots.
In this video Jason shows examples using:
*No Diffusion
*1 Stop of Diffusion
*4 Stops of Diffusion
It's very helpful to those learning photography and lighting, and we really hope it helps.

Not Everything I Do is a Success, But I Never Stop Trying...when I lost my Drone in the AMAZON.
Ever lost a drone? How about losing one in the middle of the Amazon? Along with all of your footage? How would you handle such a situation?
This was heartbreaking, sad, stupid, risky and funny all at the same time. I lost footage we’d just filmed at the native village we visited and that’s the first thing that went thru my head when the drone hit the water.
I originally wanted to take off from the land but due to time constraints it didn’t work out.
So I decided to launch from the canoe and when I did the wind coming through the canoe just took my drone away, smacking it on the pole. Hence my buddy that’s joined me on so many adventures was lost to the bottom of the River in the Amazon for an eternal sleep.
The funniest part of this video for me is @cristianhernandez030719 questions and the look on his face throughout the entire ordeal.
I also appreciate the moment of silence extended by everyone on the canoe including @neshatshoghi, @yumana.bellydancer once my “pajaro” was lost forever 😂
And yes this is my normal response to stress or a bad situation. I process it and move on. Don’t over emphasize on things you can’t control. Learn from them and move on my friends.
Success in life is about focusing and improving things that are within your power to control or change.
And yes I take many risks that very few people take, but it’s also why I live a life and have pictures that very few people have.
And I’ll never stop taking risks :)
Can’t have the highs without the lows ❤️
And now I’ll be coming back to Ecuador soon to explore the Amazon even deeper, and I can’t wait for this next adventure. But this time I’ll be launching my new “pajaro” from land 😂
Never give up on your dreams

Need some tips on how to do lighting for a glamour photography shoot? Wondering how to create soft beautiful lighting for your entire scene using a big modifier and light? This video is for you!
Jason Lanier conducted two different shoots with the same lighting set up showing you how to create glamour lighting in suite. One set up was in a bath tub and the other was on top of a dining room table with two different models.
The lighting for this shoot was done with the Rotolight Titan X1 using the Snapbag Modifier. The light was set at 19% AND used the two stops of internal smart diffusion in addition to using the very large 5 foot modifier.

How to Light Your Photo Session When There's No Sunlight- Abandoned Photo shoot in the Amazon
Ever Wonder what to do when you show up for a photo shoot and there’s not enough natural light? Do you struggle with lighting indoors with continuous lighting? This video is for you!
And it was shot in an incredible location in the middle of the Ecuadorian Amazon by world traveling photographer Jason Lanier.
Jason found this abandoned structure while journeying through the Amazon during a recent expedition. While at first he believed this was a hotel, he came to find out this was actually an old University that the government of Ecuador shut down. Jason ventured inside with two models and a crew to discover this place and bring a shoot to you!
Jason originally planned to shoot this with natural light as he likes to do with abandoned structures. But when the clouds rolled in and cut the light, Jason brought out his Rotolight Aeos to serve as a way of mimicking the light effects of the sun. This is such an effective method to employ when you find yourself in a situation where you need to shoot but the lighting isn’t what you thought it was going to be.

How To Find Your Creativity- 1 Minute Photo Tip
Remember when you were 5 years old and you could create a whole new world in your living room?
Do you remember what it felt like to not care about what people thought....or to not feel embarrassed by some crazy idea you had?
When you felt like anything was possible, and it was most likely the most creative and free time of your life?
Well, that inner 5 year old never left me. And it's that voice inside of me that drives my creativity, to this day.
I never worry if other peoplethink I look stupid when I'm creating. Because what I create is for me. And just like a 5 year old I certainly hope other people think my creation is cool....but I'm not creating it for them, I'm creating it for me.
So if you're feeling bored, uninspired, apathetic, or worn out with the creative process, chances are it's because you aren't creating, for YOU.
There's also a good chance that you're around people who don't truly support your creativity.
Go and find that inner 5 year old that doesn't care. That has no boundaries, and feels like anything is possible.
Find that person inside of you, AND LIVE.

Ever feel defeated? Feel like you can't change your life? YOU CAN. Follow me along on my journey to run my first race EVER. As a legally disabled person with a hip replacement and two ankles that need to be fused, THIS WAS SUCH A CHALLENGE FOR ME.
I decided to change my life in December 2020 when I embarked on my journey of walking 10,000 steps/day. I have since walked 10k or more steps per day for 221 days in a row which is what helped prepare me to run the half marathon in San Diego on July 18, 2021.
To learn more about the beginnings of this journey please check out this video:

And we can all choose to bottle up those hard moments and break them to free ourselves to become the best version of ourselves.
Thank you for joining me along in this journey. I hope it helps other people out there who are hurting as well.

The key to building a shoot is to try and incorporate the location, lighting, make up, wardrobe and props all into one harmonic chord where they all make sense together. Perhaps the most important question I ask myself when doing a shoot is, “How can I make this…MORE? How can I make this better"?”
As you see in the video and accompanying images, the shoot goes from basic to incorporating all of these aspects to make the shots get better and better as the shoot goes on.

Desolation at the Salton Sea- a Film by Jason Lanier
Desolation at the Salton Sea is a short film created to show the various landscapes, locations, and backdrops that make up one of the most harsh, beautiful, eclectic and forgotten places on the planet, the Salton Sea.
Known as the biggest environmental disaster in California history, the Salton Sea has gone from a lake created by excess irrigation water by farmers that turned into a vacation and recreation spot before turning toxic. The Salton Sea is now slowly receding, a sign of the desolation that has been left behind in thee wake of this once promising oasis in the middle of the desert.
The Salton Sea became a favorite place of photographer Jason Lanier many years ago when he started his photography career. Jason first visited Bombay Beach and the surrounding lake areas over a decade ago. Seeing it change over the last decade has been an incredible thing to witness and document. Like many artists Jason is drawn to this place and loves seeing something new pop up or disappear every time he visits.
This short film is meant to illustrate some of Jason's favorite areas and how they have been impacted by weather, time, and by being forgotten. There will be a behind the scenes video with this as well as this was part of a project called, "Sounds of My City" by Hollyland Audio which helps to capture storytelling through sounds captured in the area where it is being filmed.
Historical Information Taken from Wikipedia:
The lake was created by inflow of water from the Colorado River in 1905. Beginning in 1900, an irrigation canal was dug from the Colorado River to the old Alamo River channel to provide water to the Imperial Valley for farming. The headgates and canals sustained a buildup of silt, so a series of cuts was made in the bank of the Colorado River to further increase the water flow. Water from spring floods broke through a canal head-gate diverting a portion of the river flow into the Salton Basin for two years before repairs were completed. The water in the formerly dry lake bed created the modern lake that is about 15 by 35 miles (24 by 56 km).
The lake would have dried up, but farmers used generous amounts of Colorado River water and let the excess flow into the lake. In the 1950s and into the '60s, the area became a resort destination, and communities grew with hotels and vacation homes. Birdwatching was also popular as the wetlands were a major resting stop on the Pacific Flyway.
In the 1970s, scientists issued warnings that the lake would continue to shrink and become more inhospitable to wildlife. In the 1980s, contamination from farm runoff promoted the outbreak and spread of diseases. Massive die-offs of the avian populations have occurred, especially after the loss of several species of fish on which they depend. Salinity rose so high that large fish kills occurred, often blighting the beaches of the sea with their carcasses. Tourism was drastically reduced.
After 1999, the lake began to shrink as local agriculture used the water more efficiently so less runoff flowed into the lake. As the lake bed became exposed, the winds sent clouds of toxic dust into nearby communities. Smaller amounts of dust reached into the Los Angeles area and people there could sometimes smell an odor coming from the lake.
The state is mainly responsible for fixing the problems, and California lawmakers pledged to fund air-quality management projects in conjunction with the signing of the 2003 agreement to send more water to coastal cities. Local, state, and federal bodies all had found minimal success dealing with the dust, dying wildlife, and other problems for which warnings had been issued decades before. At the beginning of 2018 local agencies declared an emergency and along with the state funded and developed the Salton Sea Management Program.
After a slow start and some small projects, construction started on a $206.5 million project in early 2021 on the delta of the New River, creating ponds and wetlands on the southern shore of the lake.

10,000 steps a day for 6 months straight- (1000+ miles) 50+ Pounds Lost- Before and After Results
Can walking 10,000 steps a day really change your life? Follow Jason Lanier as he goes from hip replacement surgery to walking over 1,000 MILES without stopping for 6 months straight.
In early 2020 Jason had hip replacement surgery to fix an issue he's had since being a young boy called Leg Perthes Disease. In addition to his hip problems Jason was born with deformed ankles that required him to wear ankle braces his entire adult life. The doctors only solution is to perform ankle fusion surgeries.
Before taking that route, Jason decided to take on the 10,000 steps a day challenge to see if it would improve his health. Not only to help with the chronic pain and lack of mobility that he suffered, but also with the weight gain that had taken place on his body due to the lack of activity he was able to do on a daily basis.
This video takes you through the journey that Jason underwent as he went from a walker to assist him with walking to jogging on the Dalton Highway in Alaska.
It's an in depth look at the struggles many overweight and disabled people go through, and Jason hopes by sharing his journey it will help other people out there as well to overcome the challenges they face in their lives.
Thanks for watching.

Top 3 Best Photo Shoot Locations in Death Valley National Park
Wanna know the best locations to do photo shoots in Death Valley National Park? Here are 3 of the best spots to get incredible shots whether you’re doing a landscape shoot or a model shoot!
To see the images from these locations please visit:
http://www.jasonlanier.com/blog/2021/5/30/best-photo-spot-locations-in-death-valley-national-park
Location #1- Mesquite Sand Dunes- whether you’re dong shots at sunrise, sunset, or during the middle of the day, the Mesquite Sand Dunes are one of my favorite places to shoot in Death Valley. Compared to other sand dunes that I’ve had the opportunity to shoot, this particular location offers a lot of parking and incredible views.
Location #2- Dante’s View- way at the top of the mountain in Death Valley is Dante’s View. It offers unparalleled views of the entire park. It’s a windy road to get up there, but once you do it’s completely worth it. Try to get up there about an hour before sunset so you can capture some beautiful images during Golden Hour.
Location #3- Devil’s Golf Course- this is one of the most unique places I’ve seen on planet earth. Once you drive out there it gives you a 360 view of these crazy rock formations. Just make sure to bring good shoes because the rocks are sharp and you’ll want to be careful when moving around on them. Below are images taken about an hour before sunset with the sun at the model’s back for some beautiful shots. If you are doing a model shoot make sure to bring a flash to get the most flash to get the most out of this experience.
Other great spots in the park include: Badwater, Artist Palette and more!!
For these shoots I used the Sony A6500 with the Tamron 17-70mm lens, except for the shoot on top of Dante’s View which I used the Sony A9 with the Sigma 20mm Art lens. All of these locations tend to be very harsh environments so please be mindful of the weather and your needs to make sure you have the proper clothing and water to make these trips.

Bartram Trail High School Body Shames Female Students with HORRIBLE Photoshop FAILS in Yearbook
In May 2021 the Bartram Trail High school near Jacksonville, Florida photoshopped over 80 female students without their knowledge or consent for images they deemed to not meet school dress code guidelines. These images were apparently distracting and inappropriate.
To see the images before and after that were altered by the school, to sign the petition, and to see the news articles written about this situation please visit:
http://www.jasonlanier.com/blog/2021/5/25/bartram-trail-high-school-body-shames-female-students-with-horrible-photoshop-edits-in-yearbook
All Photoshop edits were done to female students. No male students, including boys who were part of the swim team who wore speedos for their pictures were edited.
The images were not edited by the photographer who took the images. They were altered by a teacher on staff who serves as the Yearbook Coordinator. To make matters worse the images were photoshopped in a very unprofessional, demeaning and humiliating manner towards the female students.
Several articles have been written about this situation from the New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post and more. Furthermore, what about the photographer who had their work massacred by this Yearbook Coordinator. Was it done with their consent? We don't know.
I thank you for watching and invite you to leave a comment and share the video so we can hear what you think. This is definitely wrong and sends a horrible message to our young female students.
Thanks for watching,

Hands on Review of the Fuji 23mm f/1.4 lens- Side by Side Comparison to the Sony Zeiss 35mm f/1.4
How does the 23mm Fuji lens (35mm equivalent) hold up to it’s full frame competitors like the Sony Zeiss 35mm? Wanna see comparison pics as well as finished images from model and landscape shoots? Check out the video review of this lens that shows it all to help you see what this lens can do when used with the Fuji X-S10 crop sensor body.

This lens is a little less expensive than the Sony Zeiss 35mm which I’ve used for years and is one of my favorite lenses. So I thought comparing the two lenses side by side would be beneficial because the 23mm is an equivalent of 35mm (1..5x crop factor) since it’s being used on a crop sensor body.
Below are the images from the two cameras. What do you think? Both sets of images were shot in Raw, Auto White Balance, and are completely unedited.
While filming this review at the beautiful Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah I was able to do a model shoot and some landscape photography using this lens. Those images are included in the video as well.
All in all I think this lens holds up very well against its full frame counterparts and really delivers some stunning image quality. As noted in the video it does display chromatic aberration but the Sony does so as well. And that’s easily fixed with a quick swipe of the slider in Lightroom as shown in the video. The only area where this would become an issue for both lenses would be when filming video.
I’d highly recommend this lens to anyone using the Fuji crop sensor system. I certainly was able to create some really cool pics out there in the Utah desert. A BIG thanks to my friends at AVC Photo Store and School for helping me out with the gear on this shoot. You can check them out at https://avcstore.com
Please post your comments down below and let me know what you think. Also let me know what you’d like to see in a future video. Thanks for watching my friends!

This video is a step by step tutorial shot at the beautiful Bonneville Salt Flats which shows how to set up and use the Snapbag Octa 5 with the Rotolight Titan X1. Using this modifier takes the already very soft light coming out of the Titan X1 and spreads it in a very smooth and beautiful way to create truly stunning results.
