A man has died and two others, including a British man, have been injured in a knife and hammer attack on a street in central Paris. The attack occurred near the Eiffel Tower shortly before 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Saturday. A 26-year-old French national known to security services has been arrested and anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation.

Israel's renewed bombardment of Gaza is continuing into its second day, as the IDF warns civilians in some areas to evacuate. Fighting resumed on Friday after a seven-day truce expired; Israel and Hamas have blamed each other for failing to agree an extension.

King Charles III has urged world leaders gathered in Dubai to make the COP28 climate summit a "turning point". In a speech on the second day of the conference, the monarch warned that despite some progress "we remain so dreadfully far off track". He called for "genuine transformational action", a day after the meeting opened with stark warnings on global warming. The King said he has spent “a large proportion of my life trying to warn of the existential threats facing us over global warming, climate change and biodiversity loss”. He said that despite this, decades later there is 30% more CO2 in the atmosphere now than back then, and almost more than 40% more methane.

The Israeli military said it has resumed combat against Hamas in Gaza, after accusing the group of violating the terms of a ceasefire. The truce lasted seven days and saw the release of 110 hostages held by Hamas and 240 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

srael and Hamas have agreed to extend the temporary truce in Gaza, just minutes before it was due to expire. The pause in fighting was due to expire at 05:00 GMT, but the Israeli military said it will be extended "in light of the mediators' efforts to continue the process of releasing the hostages". On Wednesday evening, another 16 hostages taken captive by Hamas were released, as were 30 Palestinians. It is thought that around 145 people remain in captivity.

Two Palestinian boys have been shot dead in the street in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, during a raid by Israeli forces. They were 8 and 14 years old. With war in Gaza, tension and violence have been rising in the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel but run by the Palestinian Authority. Untreated diseases could eventually kill more people in Gaza than bombings if the health system is not restored, the World Health Organization says. Diarrhoea and respiratory infections are widespread among children in overcrowded UN facilities where almost 1.1 million people are sheltering. Patients with chronic illnesses like cancer are also receiving no treatment. The warning comes as a truce between Israel and Hamas entered a sixth day, after a 48-hour extension was agreed.

A diplomatic row has broken out between the British and Greek governments over the Elgin Marbles. The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due to meet Rishi Sunak in London, but No 10 cancelled the meeting at the last minute. A spokesman for the Greek prime minister told the BBC that he was "disappointed" the meeting had been cancelled "at the 11th hour". The cancellation came the day after Mr Mitsotakis said the marbles should be returned. The marbles are ancient Greek treasures in the British Museum brought to the UK by the British diplomat Lord Elgin in the early 19th Century.

Israel has freed 33 more Palestinian prisoners, after the release of a further 11 Israeli hostages by Hamas. The release of 33 people means 150 Palestinians have been released since Friday - the day both sides began swapping hostages and prisoners. Fifty-one Israeli hostages, including three-year-old-twin sisters, have been freed by Hamas as part of the deal. Qatar has said the pause in fighting will be extended by two days, which Israel has not confirmed or denied.

Analysis by the BBC has revealed that Hamas held multiple training exercises in Gaza, ahead of their deadly attack on Israel on 7th October which claimed 1,200 lives. BBC Verify and BBC Arabic have established that Hamas held military exercises over three years and posted the evidence on social media. They practised hostage-taking, raiding compounds and breaching Israel's defences during these exercises, the last of which was held just 25 days before the attack. Several armed Palestinian groups joined Hamas in the assault on Israel. The groups carried out joint drills in Gaza, including at a site less than 1km from the barrier with Israel. The Ocotober attack on Israel provoked retaliation which has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the authorities there. Along Israel's northern border with Lebanon, since 7 October the Israel Defence Forces have also been engaged in continuous fighting against the Lebanon-based Islamist armed group and political party Hezbollah. The group are seen as terrorists by governments including the UK, and have long been opposed to Israel’s presence in disputed lands in the south of the country - resulting not in a border, but a so-called ‘blue line’ drawn by the UN, dividing the two nations. From the Lebanese front line, embedded with Irish UN peacekeeping troops, Nafiseh Kohnavard reports.

There are strong signs that the four-day ceasefire agreement in Gaza may be extended. Hamas has released a third group of hostages and Israel has freed more Palestinian prisoners. Both Israel and Hamas have indicated that they are considering extending the truce with the possible release of more captives. The United States has said it hopes the ceasefire agreement will be extended. However the Israeli government has also indicated that its military operation in Gaza is not over. 17 more hostages were in the third group released by Hamas, including Israeli women and children, a Russian national and three Thai citizens. Hamas has released 17 more hostages, including 13 Israelis and four Thai citizens. It’s the second group of captives to be freed in an agreement that includes a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas. The hostages were transferred by the International Red Cross through the Rafah border crossing from Gaza into Egypt where they were handed to the Israeli authorities. It’s understood that 39 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel are being released in return for the latest hostages being freed. Russia has launched its biggest drone attack on Kyiv since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last year, the city's mayor has said. Residents were woken by explosions before dawn on Saturday as Russia bombarded the capital for more than six hours. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said five people had been injured in the attacks and power has been cut to a number of buildings. Officials said that more than 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones were fired at the capital, and 74 were shot down.

A four-day pause in the fighting between Israel and Hamas has come into effect, with both sides saying the pause is temporary. Under the deal, 13 Israeli hostages who were taken by Hamas are due to be released later today, with 50 being released over the four days. As part of the agreement, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners.

A speeding car that crashed and exploded in a deadly fireball on a US-Canada border bridge was not terror-related, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has said. Two people in the vehicle died and a US border agent was injured when the car crashed at a checkpoint heading from the New York side of the border to Rainbow Bridge. The crash triggered a major security scare on the eve of Thanksgiving, with the closure of four bridges on the world's longest international border.

Three of the world's most influential women - Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates - have told BBC 100 Women they want to end child marriage within a generation. Each year, 12 million underaged girls are forced into marriage - a crisis that at the current rate will take over 300 years to fix, according to the UN. But former First Lady Mrs Obama told BBC News "it is an issue that can be solved tomorrow".

A 5-year-old girl is in emergency care after five people were injured in a knife attack in the centre of Dublin, Irish police have said. In a press conference, gardai added that a boy and a girl were also hurt, less seriously - along with two adults. Officers added that a "person of interest" - a man in his 50s - had been detained after the attack, and they were not looking for anyone else They said they were not treating the incident as terror-related, but that it remained under investigation.

Israel has announced that a deal to release dozens of Israeli hostages held by Hamas has been delayed. A temporary ceasefire which is supposed to come into force with the hostages’ release has also been delayed. Israel says negotiations are continuing with Hamas. It had been expected that 50 of around 240 hostages held in Gaza would be released over four days with a truce taking place at the same time. A vehicle has exploded on a bridge that connects the US and Canada near the Niagara Falls, according to the FBI. The incident took place on the Rainbow Bridge one day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, one of the busiest travel days of the year. According to the city of Niagara Falls, the vehicle was attempting to enter the US when it exploded. All crossings are currently closed until further notice, officials said.

US authorities have reportedly thwarted a plot to kill a Sikh separatist on American soil. Two months ago, Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau said there were credible allegation linking Indian agents to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Vancouver. India has denied the claims.

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman will return as boss just days after he was fired by the board, the firm has said. The agreement "in principle" involves a new board members being appointed, the tech company added. It comes after Mr Altman was sacked on Friday triggering an open letter from staff who threatened to resign unless he was reinstated.

Four parties have emerged as front-runners as Dutch voters decide who will lead their country into a new political era. The polls suggest a neck-and-neck race and voting ends at 21:00 (20:00GMT), with centre-right leader Dilan Yesilgöz tipped to win and become the first female Dutch prime minister. Her closest rivals are anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders and a left-alliance led by former top-ranking EU commissioner Frans Timmermans. More than 13 million Dutch voters have a choice of 26 parties in Wednesday's vote, and as many as 17 could win seats.

North Korea claims it has successfully put a military spy satellite into space, after two earlier attempts failed this year. South Korea says it has partially suspended its military agreement with the country, and will resume surveillance activities previously suspended on the border. It comes after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un in September, where Moscow offered Pyongyang help with its space programme. South Korea says it has not confirmed yet if the satellite is operational, but says it believes the North received help from Russia.

Israel and Hamas have agreed a deal to pause fighting for the release of 50 hostages being held in Gaza. It's not yet known when the deal will be implemented, but if successful it'll be the first break in fighting since 7 October. Hamas said the deal will also allow hundreds of lorries of humanitarian aid, medical supplies and fuel into Gaza. The group, which is considered as a terrorist organisation by several Western governments, said that 150 Palestinian women and teenagers will be released from Israeli jails under the deal. Israel's government insists that this isn't the end of the war, reiterating its commitment to "complete the elimination of Hamas".
