Hiking Mt Yale & Mt Harvard: San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest), CA.
Mt Yale is easy to miss when ascending Mt Wilson Toll Rd. The climb to Mt Wilson is much easier when avoiding Mt Yale as well. I decided to descend to it from Mt Wilson and to form a day hiking loop to include Mt Yale and Mt Harvard. This allowed me to gain these two summits which were new to me. When leaving Mt Wilson Toll Rd below Mt Yale, a use trail follows Harvard Ridge to the top of the peaks. Once again, here is an example of a lightly visited hiking area in the middle of a heavily populated region of California.

Mount McKinley is just one of several seldom visited peaks on the west side of the San Gabriel Mountains. It is probably named after the 25th President of the United States, but I could be wrong. Visiting on a cool day is a smart move, since there is no shade out there. Meanwhile, following in my footsteps will get you where you want to go!

Hiking The Bonelli Hills Loop: The San Gabriel Valley, Bonelli Regional Park, San Dimas, CA.
Bonelli Regional Park is a great place to go to find seclusion while not actually leaving the city. On this adventure, I took a few hours out of my work day to concentrate on the park high points. While doing so, I connected four hills in a loop hike. As is my usual practice when visiting, I parked in the free Park & Ride lot across the freeway. This allowed me to visit the park free of charge.

Hiking Yerba Buena Ridge (via Oak Spring): San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest), CA.
The hike starts in a canyon on the western side of the range. Despite being only a few miles from the city, Yerba Buena Ridge gets very few visitors. Mountain visitors tend to flock to more popular destinations, which certainly worked in my favor. Oak Spring is a pleasant stop along the way. The hike in total makes for an enjoyable and pleasant visit, especially since it was a cool day.

Hiking Weir Canyon & Robbers Peak: Suburban Orange County, Anaheim Hills, CA
Weir Canyon connects with Santiago Oaks Regional Park in Anaheim Hills. The Hidden Canyon Trailhead makes for a good starting and ending point for a loop hike of Weir Canyon. However, a loop of Weir Canyon wasn't complete enough for me, I needed to add a peak. Robbers Peak is nearby and can be reached along the same network of trails. I got there on the Anaheim Hills Trail which goes west from Hidden Canyon Trailhead.

Hiking Cole Point & Beyond: San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest), CA.
Cole Point is not a popular destination. It is an area that really only gets visited by peak climbers. However, with the new firebreaks put in to help quell any future fires, the mountains in the area were also visited by bulldozer crews. This kind of taints the peak climbing experience a bit, but the Forest Service needs to do its management. While on Cole Point, I made sure to include the nearby Peak 5840 and Peak 5881. Turned into a nice short mileage workout with nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain.

Hiking Peak 4440: San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest), CA.
No reason why a random peak can't be climbed! Just because nobody ever got around to naming it, doesn't mean it does not require attention. Personally, I generally find random peaks to be more fun, simply because I usually have the whole mountain to myself, and I also get the feeling like I am an explorer discovering new land. Of course, nevermind the fact that there was a road, powerlines, and use trail already there!
Peak 4440 is an outlying peak in the San Gabriel Range. It sits in a transition zone separating the forest from the desert. Although it was bone dry on my visit, it is a peaceful and pleasant area, with no city noise, and even the powerlines above weren't crackling. Peak climbers and electrical workers are probably the only people likely to visit the area, which really makes this a quiet place most of the time.

Visiting a lightly visited section of the San Gabriel Mountains. I could easily call this a desert peak, but it is technically part of the San Gabriel's. Came on a cool day, which is the right way to go. On top is the foundation of an old fire lookout. As expected for a fire lookout, it has great views. I added Ravenna Benchmark on the same outing to complete a two for one peak hiking experience.

Climbing Rabbit Peak on Easter weekend seemed like an obvious choice to me. At least since I don't know of any "Bunny Peak". This is not the ominous Rabbit Peak in Riverside County. This Rabbit Peak is located in the San Gabriel Mountains NE of Los Angeles. That being said, it still has its challenges, like no shade and 1,700' of elevation gain. Having the knack to find under-the-radar hikes recently, this one once again had no other hikers on the day. The solitude was enjoyable!

There are some more serious loop options from Monte Cristo Campground. However, since I had already been to Granite and Rountop Mountain, I opted for the lower loop to include the two other HPS summits, Iron & Rabbit. About halfway through the hike, I decided to do Rabbit Peak on its own day and just concentrate on Iron Mountain. In the process, I climbed Monte Cristo Peak and Peak 4546, where I created a smaller loop than planned. I would hate to be out here in the summer, since there is no shade, so early spring turned out to be the perfect time. By the way, Iron Mountain is known as "Iron Mountain #3" since it is the third highest of the three named "Iron Mountain"(s) in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Buzzard Peak sits right on the edge of the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire. The area is usually greener longer into the year than other nearby open spaces. Mount Lukens is an unlikely answer to a trivia question. The question being, what is the highest point in the city of Los Angeles? LA city owns the mountain top. Since this is the highest mountain top they own, then I found myself standing on the city high point. I wound up making the trip longer than I needed to be, because I missed a turn. It all worked out, though, and I wound up walking a nice wide loop. Another great summit in the San Gabriel Mountains!

Mount Nebo is essentially a random peak in the Mojave Desert. Visiting it on the day was the result of me enacting a back up plan to visit peaks in the area after I skipped out on my Joshua Tree NP plans. In all, I am glad the day worked out the way it did, or else I may have been curious about what was in the area for many more years. As always, it is a great feeling to be miles away from anyone and also knowing that anybody I know has no clue as to where I am. It is a level of freedom that I crave and enjoy. I completed this short adventure after visiting Copper Mountain earlier.

Exploring Copper Mountain in the Mojave Desert near Twentynine Palms. This hike was a backup plan after my original Joshua Tree NP plans went awry. With very little useful information to go with, I studied Google Maps to see if I could get close to Copper Mountain before parking. I found a place to park on the side of Siesta Drive right before the road turned into a full fledged 4WD road. From there, the hike began with the goal of summiting a desert mountain and taking advantage of the cool winter temperatures. A nice social distancing hike too, since there wasn't anybody else around for miles!

A windy and cold day in Southern California had me visiting May Peak. The May Peak Ridge had a cluster of peaks that I had not visited yet. After learning that I could drive up most of the way on a back road that I didn't know about previously, I made sure to get up there when I could. Two peaks were essentially gimme peaks, since the car did most of the work. I was grateful that I needed to work more at topping out on May Peak. Despite all the wind, it was fun to be out doing what I like doing, even under less ideal conditions.

After visiting Sugarloaf earlier, my main focus was on Limerock Peak. This was a new summit for me and I enjoyed videoing the climb. I especially enjoyed how the landscape was starting to green in the area. Green hills are a rarity in Southern California, so I was glad to see it first hand. The summit area was a bit of an uneasy feeling with an active shooting range down below, otherwise, it was a great day in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains!

While on a quest to check off some San Gabriel Mountain summits that I have yet visited, I concentrated on the far western portion of the range. Mileage wise, the western side is farther away from me, so for a number of years it had been ignored. I am starting to pick them off now. Sugarloaf is probably the easiest of these peaks, so when I arrived at Lopez Canyon Park, I decided to knock it off before beginning a more difficult hike up Limerock Peak.

I managed to squeeze in Mount Davis at the end of the day. I had planned to add this to my travels a few times already this year, but this was the first time I was able to get it included.
