There's a new Instagram account on the scene @honestpatternreviews where anyone can anonymously submit sewing pattern confessions, then the screenshots are posted publicly. Get the popcorn ready 🍿 because the comment section is a dumpster fire 🔥. The sewing community appears to be split on this one: some welcome an open space to freely share their frustration about sewing patterns, others feel this is unfair to sewing pattern designers due to the anonymity and possible lack of vetting the information. FAQ: How do you download embroidery design files, then transfer them from a computer to the embroidery machine? This is a basic beginner demonstration for Windows-based PCs (sorry Mac users!) and the Brother PE800 embroidery machine. I purchase a lot of embroidery designs from Etsy and various websites. Typically the download files are zipped (compressed) and need to be unzipped (extracted) before they are ready for use. Each brand of embroidery machine uses their own compatible file type. For example: Brother uses .pes files. While you can transfer embroidery files as-is to the embroidery machine, embroidery software allows you to combine or alter designs & fonts. I also go over using .bx fonts and how to import them into the Embrilliance program. You will need a USB flash drive. This easy and relatively quick sewing project is a great one to bust out your favorite fabric scraps and fun zippers! Introducing... the Super Simple Vinyl Zipper Pouch, which features fabric, clear vinyl, and bias tape. Download the free pattern templates on the Sewing Report website, then come back and follow the step-by-step video tutorial here. DOWNLOAD FREE PATTERN (link to PDF in this blog post) https://www.sewingreport.com/?p=4217 MATERIALS NEEDED: Main + lining fabric (Pieces need to be 21 x 8 inches to fit pattern 2x) *For the main fabric, I recommend using interfaced quilting cotton or a heavier weight fabric like canvas. My preferred fusible interfacing is Pellon Shape Flex SF101. Zipper tape allows you to get the perfect custom length for your next sewing project, but what about installing those pulls? Up until recently, I actually avoided using tape-by-the-yard because I thought putting the pulls on would be difficult. Good news - it's easier than you think! Etsy customers now have the ability to leave video reviews from the Etsy app on iOS devices (Apple). Reviews can be up to 30 seconds in length and include audio. While Etsy touts this feature as a benefit to both buyers & sellers, many sellers are questioning the potential for customer abuse via online forums such as r/EtsySellers. Etsy states that "inappropriate video content" can be reported, reviewed by staff, and removed - but states that content could take up to 7-10 business days to remove if found to violate Etsy policies. Important update to my original video about putting a walking foot on an industrial sewing machine... One viewer recommended a different type of screw for the Juki DDL-8700, so I ordered a box to test out, while another reports that attempting this walking foot hack threw the timing off on her sewing machine. *DISCLAIMER: This is not a sponsored video, nor am I associated with JUKI Corporation. With so many of us looking for scrap busting small projects - introducing the Super Simple Mini Basket! This is a free pattern with a step-by-step sew along video tutorial to make miniature fabric baskets with handles and lining with no raw seams exposed. This is a fat quarter friendly project with several different variations for customization. You can do a quilted version, pieced version, substitute twill tape handles, or omit the handles altogether. These would be perfect to use for sustainable gift packaging, storing small items in your craft room, and I think they *might* work as an American Girl Doll accessory. We are seeing the effects of inflation and supply chain shortages worldwide, and makers are no exception to significant price increases across the board. As someone who sells sewing supplies on Etsy, I'm getting regular announcements from manufacturers and distributors notifying buyers of price spikes due to their own rising costs.
