I took a few cuttings from a Pothos house plant then put them in water to root. I kept a single leaf around without a node since it was a pretty variegated color to look at. I didn’t expect a leaf without a node to survive for more than a week or so, yet it’s still alive after 18 months. Almost time to say goodbye as it started turning yellow a few weeks ago. Any shade one can get in a parking lot during warmer days of the year is appreciated. I wouldn’t park here during a lightning storm. Would you? This internet tower is enclosed like a utility pole. It certainty looks more difficult to climb than other opened, framed structures; not sure what the internet performance difference is or if it holds up any better in strong winds. As usual, big bird nest are on top of the small platforms where workers need to stand. This is an area that I take opossums to when I trap them on my property for the past 8 years; I’ve taken about 10 so far. I carry the trap cage to the back where the trees start… The county will not pickup wildlife, and building contractors certainly won’t either; they should! Behind this vacant lot are acres of trees, brush, and some waterways. The cleared area has been used for storing mounds of dirt, but today I thought I noticed new rocks dumped off, no big deal, right? I parked in the adjacent hotel parking lot so I could take Pup Missy for a walk on the soft, dirt filled road. There is always plenty of parking spaces so I don’t feel that I’m in anyone’s way. I wasn’t planning on going too far into the vacant lot but Missy was guiding me towards those rocks. So off we went. Wow! Mounds of seashells, not rocks. I haven’t been that surprised in a long time☺️ Missy even got excited over the shells, and climbed them as she sniffed around. Quick visit to a tiny park, and Hathaway bridge that connects Panama City Beach Florida to Panama City (inland). Hathaway was constructed in 2003, it replaced two previous bridges that were unable to carry the growing number of users. The original wooden, “St. Andrews Bay Bridge” was built in 1929 (some say 1946) and renamed for Franz Hathaway, chairman of Florida's State Road Department. The second Hathaway bridge replaced first Hathaway, and was completed in 1959. In 1997, the state of Florida issued more than $80 million for construction of the new Hathaway Bridge. Took Missy to Carl Gray Park. Just off Hathaway Bridge next to Gulf Coast State College. She wasn’t as nervous this time, and she started to look for critters in the water. Not sure if she’ll ever enjoy water as much as she does land. The water can be bit loud, choppy and scary for her. Glad she didn’t try to walk me too much; she was being a good girl. Took Missy to a little boat ramp/ park near a bridge. Most visitors go there to fish in shade from under the bridge or to launch a boat. Few were out as it was windy with choppy waters. We shared a quick snack but it didn’t stop Missy from sniffing the ground for more. People tend to throw out or drop all sorts of foods near beaches and waterways for birds, deer or wildlife in general. Missy loves finding a cheese doodle or potato chip. lol. I try not to let her eat any but occasionally she gets lucky. She definitely sniffs out dried chicken and fish bones, even rib bones. Just the other day there was pizza crust in a parking space, I had to kick it far under my van but as soon as I got Missy out, she was pulling her leash to go get it. She can eat 24/7😁 Missy got her first wedgie ☺️ with the extended leash. She had to sit and think for a sec about how she was going get herself out of it. She wanted to figure it out on her own, and she did; she circled backwards and the leash was back in the correct position. So many delicious leaves were harvested from this one plant, and I was able to freeze plenty for future recipes. Of course I rinsed the leaves well, as I do with all grown food as soon as it’s taken indoors. My Pup Missy enjoys an occasional leaf. Tiny ants just appeared after the flowers bloomed; the ants really enjoy them. Flowers are edible but were a bit too bitter for me when I tried them in the past. Missy usually loves to chase birds; not so much this morning. She just enjoyed watching! Could be that she was exhausted after my cousin brought his dog to visit for a weekend. It was Missy’s first time hanging out with another dog in her home for that length of time since she was a puppy. Missy was a bit jealous when I petted or fed the other dog Sophie. Missy wanted the same attention, like a child. ☺️ Although it takes more than a weekend to train dogs to become accustomed, it went quite well. It took some time to get Missy’s feet wet. She finally made it in for the first time. 😁 it’s a very shallow bay at the shoreline, and good for walking. Any deeper, the fish would be larger with sharks swimming around. She didn’t notice the tiny fish or a tiny red crab that disappeared into the wet sand. Not sure if she will ever try to catch anything in water as she does on land. I’m not crazy about sharks so ankle deep is plenty for both of us. Green Anoles have been in North America for millions of years. Orange-Head Browns are seen more frequently in recent years because Green Anoles are relocating to higher bushes and trees according to scientists. But people still think Orange-Headed are replacing Green Anoles. Orange-headed were introduced through trade in the 1940’s, some say that they are native to Cuba or Bahamas. Missy usually comes along whenever I run errands, and loves short or long drives. She knows she’ll end up going for a walk at a familiar place or be super surprised by a new location, even if it’s just a shopping center. She gets so excited on her walks, she practically walks me. She’s still young, learning, and full of energy, yet certainly knows how to chill. Being stuck in the same yard or living quarters, day after day can be boring, even depressing, for young dogs, and they can turn aggressive, so I do what I can to keep her cheery and friendly. Meeting or just seeing other people, dogs and animals is good for her; she loves when strangers walk by and want to meet her, so she can play with them. I always have to warn strangers, if they start baby talking to her while passing, that they’re going to have to pet her or don’t speak to her and get her excited lol; some gladly take her on and allow her to jump and kiss all over them. I also have to ask dog owners if their dog is friendly as Missy tries to pull me over to meet every dog; she loves other dogs but If a dog is nasty, growls or wants to bite first, she gets upset, then wants to dish it right back. Missy never starts anything with other dogs, just replies! ☺️Sort of like President Trump! lol. Occasionally, it’s the smallest dogs that start trouble first; I just hold the leash tight and move along. The first several tries, missy used her paw first, then the door panels would swing back towards her, and knock her in the head. OMG. I was worried about that. ☺️ So I had to walk around pushing my head against my hand and flip my hand upward to show her and tell her yes. Then I scratched in mid air and smacked my own head to show her and tell her no. lol. Every time she went to use her paw to scratch it open, after using it a few times; I also had to stop her and place her head near the door, then tell her, go, go, go. Treats helped initially to get her through. Whew. She uses it properly. No issues. Thank God. I thought she was going to paw it every time before going through, and get knocked in the head forever. I could definitely see and hear her use it in the beginning, the impact was scary loud. It closes fast. I didn’t want her to injure her own head so I worked with her until she got it or I would’ve put the panel on to prevent her from using it without me nearby to continue training. This Home Depot aluminum storm door (EMCO) comes with a people window and screen that slides up and down. Frame included with all black hardware, and an adjustable door closer for the entire door to shut automatically. The doggie door comes with a slide down panel cover for when not in use. I think it’s great to have if you have a yard, in case of an emergency so a dog or cat can get out if you’re home or away. The regular door on the house can always be closed or locked as usual. The storm door is secondary. It is currently the least expensive between Lowe’s and HD. HD affiliates can install doors but I found a local handyman to install it. Purchased food plant starters from Home Depot. They didn’t look too well so priced at $2 ech. Other brand looked a little better, but priced more than double. They’re doing great for $2 ech, transplanted them into larger pots a couple weeks ago. They also got a boost of energy after a recent storm. Some dogs enjoy Cilantro and Bell Peppers as much as people do. My pup Missy has to be kept away or she’ll eat every new pepper that pops up, and run off with the plant to play. This morning she snagged a skink. 🥴 No kisses for her today. She also likes to nibble on Cilantro as we leave for walks; this year’s is super fragrant. Nice! Missy’s nose was quite active between sniffing lizards and birds. Pretty soon she’ll be hunting lots of bees. Look at it go☺️ Old, leftover plastic downspouts after installing rain barrels came in handy for lizards to get around some edges of the yard, which was once the neighborhood cat hangout before Missy arrived and took over. Lizards were here first and I like them; they eat roaches, you know.☺️ I also have plenty of rocks for lizards to hide their eggs. Rooting sweet potatoes on a bathroom window. Hopefully green slips will follow so they can be planted outdoors. Sweet potatoes are one of the prettiest plants. These were grocery store bought. Last season I used grocer’s and I harvested only handful of miniature potatoes. That’s all but I was happy. Just enough to share with the pup for one meal, and they were delicious. The rain did most of the watering. Have you ever grown potatoes? I wonder if today’s eclipse will stimulate gardens in any way. #Spring #Gardening, Evening Primrose Wildflower Weed is native to Eastern US but found in many other areas. It can be used as ground cover, or grown in pots to attract bees and other pollinators. It usually grows low to the ground (a few inches) but can reach 24. Blooms open during nights, and into sunrise; some flowers close as soon as bright sunshine hits them. They can grow in sun or part shade and bloom from Feb thru Oct in my Zone 9a-9b. When a yellow bloom is done, it’ll turn a peachy color, and then the petal’s texture looks similar to hibiscus but smaller, about the size of a US quarter at first bloom. Other color variations can occur in similar species. This is a cousin to medicinal Primrose. The yard is greener during the day and into the night, then by morning, the yard is covered with yellow blooms. Like magic! I read that rose food can be fed to primrose, but I don’t fertilize them or go out of my way to give them water. They survive in sandy soil, with rain, pollinators, cut and drop or weed eater cuttings from various wild flowers in the yard. This plant’s life cycle is biennial, mostly two seasons. First season produces green leaves in a rosette like, cluster burst. Then second season, it’ll bloom, produce fruit, and provide seeds. They can be a pain if you don’t want them. You’d have to pull them up while young or the roots will be difficult to pull out without breaking, and leaving some behind. I removed them all by hand, last season and occasionally for six seasons prior, then last season, I decided to let them be. I also let a few other wild flowers and weeds be. Photos were taken on 3/27/2024 in the AM, in NW FL. Then later after lunch, I manage to get a little video in while it was less windy and noisy. I made this video before I hurt my arm, getting better, just takes time. I spent many years in Miami so I crave Cuban food. It seems most of the Cuban restaurants prefer to stay down south. I wish more restaurants would spread out. Have you ever eaten a Cuban Sandwich? If not, you can make one. This one is pretty close to authentic flavors and textures. Finding good Cuban bread in the north or even baking it, is tricky. The bread used today was from a grocery store. It’s not exactly the way I remember. lol. Miami, Cuban bread would be hard as a rock in a day or so, and as long as a baseball bat; I do miss it. The bread used in this video has a better flavor and texture if toasted. If you don’t find the bread, then find a good, bakery hoagie roll. Too bad subway doesn’t sell their sub rolls, they’re good. Sometimes I’ll fry plantains to eat with Cuban Sandwiches but pre-cooked Goya brand frozen from stores can be microwaved, and it’s delicious; plantains just go with Cuban sandwiches. Salty & Sweet. Missy’s Meals are endless possibilities. But on days when she’s fed plain dog food, it’s the chicken, and occasionally mixed with a different flavor. She likes a few crunchy pieces and the rest is moisten with water. She’s not a big water drinker since I got her; water added to her food helps her intake. I couldn’t find a Bag Clip to work for my method of closing dog food bags. They would pop off easily or wouldn’t work at all. Some heavy duty handyman type clamps would work but no way I could squeeze them opened on a daily basis. I needed something easy, one handed, and that wouldn’t hurt my hands☺️ I discovered a light-weight plastic Retail Clip-On Sign Holder with a rounded bottom clamp. It’s used to clamp signs onto displays, objects or side walls of bins. The bottom of the clamp has a “nonslip” foam on the inner side with a thumb lever to open and close. It’s perfect for me to keep rolled-closed bags of dry dog food closed. I roll the bag downward while squeezing out air, then pop the clip on. It’s so easy to use. When the bag is about halfway full, as food gets used up, I trim off a few inches from the top so that it’s not too bulky for the clip. Also, when I first cut a bag open, I try not to remove too much so it can be rolled shut. The upper part that holds the sign or paper comes off with a little pull. I only needed the bottom portions of the clips, so I donated the upper clips, as they are still useful for holding papers or art. Find them online in different colors. It was a beautiful, sunny, and breezy day, The birds were happy! Missy was a bit nervous with the wind flapping her ears around lol while waves crashed against the docks. She whined a little after we arrived and seeing such big birds up close. Not sure if she wanted to play or eat ☺️ She occasionally spots them flying above her yard, as they make their way to and from the beach. She has barked at flocks of seagulls, and paragliders on occasion. She also notices bright moons and stars but never barks at those, and quickly forgets about it. She had a nice walk and I’m sure she will enjoy more visits to the marina. Recently, a tornado swept through this area of PCB. Majority of buildings, businesses, restaurants, and fishing charters at Captain Anderson’s Marina are in great shape, considering few properties nearby were totaled. Today, a few marine related business owners are repairing damage or just checking on general maintenance of their charter boats as they enter spring, with extra visitors on vacation. Miss Stella went to a dog park for a second time. She wore out all the dogs, including herself. They all played for about 15 minutes straight. She chased them, and they chased her back… After she plopped into the sand, she gathered enough energy to run over to the biggest dog. She cut in front of him to get him to chase her, as he was casually walking and taking a break☺️ He didn’t mind but he was pooped. She was too. Other dogs were already leaving. It was time to call it a day. Missy slept good and deep that night.
