Attacking Options From Knee Ride. Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn
In BJJ, and many other grappling arts, the knee ride (or any of its other names) is commonly used as a transition to more stable positions. In Judo, the knee ride is one of a number of positions known as "Uki-Gatame" 浮固, or a "Floating Position", which indicates that it's not the most stable way to hold down a strong, capable opponent. Still, this position is an important one and everyone training should learn how to escape from it and use it to set up some great attacks.
Here are some solid, high-percentage finishes you can experiment with.

Sixth World Tournament Tensho Kata Demonstration with the Wonderful Shihan Bobby Lowe
This video has been around for some time. It is from the Sixth World Tournament, November 1995. How exciting to demonstrate Tensho bunkai with Sosai's first non-Japanese student, the late, wonderful, Shihan Bobby Lowe, and other great friends and karate-ka from Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
Anyone who knew Shihan Bobby knew what a beautiful, humble example of a warrior he was. His birthday was just last week (August 23). Shihan left us 12 years ago, on September 14, 2011. On that day, light a candle, burn some incense or whatever you do in your cultural traditions to remember loved ones who have left us. As Kyokushin students, we stand on the shoulders of such greats as Shihan Lowe.
This is from the official Sixth World Tournament video so I give credit to the producers, Media 8, for including this demo. A memory lasting a lifetime.

The Punch Number System. A Great Way to Work Your Punches. Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn
I hold the mitts a little differently than many. You might like to try it out and see if it works for you.
This punch number system is the first number system I use to introduce students to working the mitts. It's a common system but not the only one. I also use a second number system for more advanced students.
The important value of using mitts is to develop optimal balance, body weight distribution and rhythm. Power is a result of those factors and comes with time. For karate, you can add kicks to the combinations in a way that suits your own skill level.

Unlocking the Secrets of Kesa Gatame: Advanced Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn
More and more Kyokushin students are expanding their knowledge base to include groundwork. Even Sosai recognised how vital it is to know what to do if you are on the ground. And in the security business, changing laws and circumstances (CCTV and everyone's mobile phones whipping out the second trouble starts) means that knocking someone out with a punch or kick is not always the best solution. You need to know how to restrain someone safely.
Kesa-Gatame, the scarf hold, is found in one form or another in every kind of grappling art. For a good reason too! It is highly effective when done properly. In this video, I cover key points to not only keep the position, but also the strengths and weaknesses of the four common escapes.

Dealing with plateaus, injuries and dry periods in training. Kyokushin Karate with Cameron Quinn
The longer you train the more often you will experience plateaus, dry periods and perhaps periods of injury. Dealing with them properly can be a challenge. Rolling in BJJ for older students can be a challenge when faced with younger, stronger training partners. If that is you, or if you are a karate-ka starting your BJJ journey, today we are looking at some thoughts on:

OY BOYS! Off-Your-Back-On-Your-Side. Develop This Habit NOW! Training with Cameron Quinn
OY BOYS. That's my acronym to remind students to Get Off Your Back, On Your Side. Getting stuck on your back in any position is not good. Even rugby players learn very quickly not to get caught under a ruck on your back. This is a drill that helps you to avoid getting stuck and trying to get off your back too late.
The shape was taught to me by Professor Felipe Grez, so for a long time at the dojo we just called that strong side position the "Felipe'. There re a few key points:
1. Get to the side quickly. And the greater the pressure the more you need to angle your body facing downwards.
2. Cock's comb. Just as in stand-up fighting, the frame used to defend the head against strong kicks works here too. Keep the arm relaxed, like sticky hands, as you monitor Uke's attempts to gain head control.
3. Kick-stand the leg. This helps stop Uke from flattening you out again.
4. The top side arm has one priority: prevent Uke's underhook and be ready for your own when the opportunity arises.
Going all the way against strong pressure so that you're basically facing the mat in the Running Man position (taught to me by Priit Mihkelson of Estonia, one of BJJ's modern innovators) is also excellent defence.

Ghost Escape. A Surprise Escape From Under Side Control. Training with Cameron Quinn
I think whoever named this the 'ghost escape' did well. One second you're stuck under side control, and the next you are gone, like a ghost disappearing. The rhythm and timing, like everything, are essential so drill it well and feel how you use the momentum. Twist the body as you shoot the inside arm overhead.
We got a bit bogged down here with the follow-up chokes (D'arce and Anaconda) but for training purposes the most important thing is to develop smoothness in the escape. If nothing else, post on Uke's head or shoulder and reset. Once you get that, the immediate attack into the choke will come relatively easily.

Kimura Trap Counter to Single Leg.
This is a high-percentage counter to the single leg used frequently by Masahiko Kimura, the great judo-ka and close friend of Sosai Mas Oyama. It was known as the Kaiten Ude-Garami. I think David Avellan made the name Kimura Trap popular. He had a lot of success with it in competition.
Take your time getting the steps right, then gradually speed it up. Experiment with different finishes. Here, I finish with a standard cross-body Kimura, a Danaher-style cross-body Kimura, and a leg scissors. All high percentage finishes off the Kimura Trap. I also have a lot of success with a nearside Kimura I'll demonstrate in another video.

Using Karate's Sanchin Dachi in BJJ. Advanced Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn
Karate students develop a strong base simply because of the nature of correct training. I remember the first time I trained with Professor Carlos Machado in 1994 and one of the comments he made was how karate guys who came in to train always had strong bases. One of the strongest stances is Sanchin Dachi, sometimes called the Hourglass Stance. The feet are somewhat pigeon-toed and the knees are bent in, aligned with the feet. It provides a very strong base in BJJ when stand-up passing in the closed guard. It is especially effective against the waiter sweep because the alignment of the stance counters the forces being applied in the sweep.
I have done other videos on the Sanchin stance so check them out. The benefits of this stance in training are numerous.

Standing Closed Guard Pass: The Strongest Way To Pass. Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn
Whilst it is an important part of fundamental skill development to learn how to pass the closed from a seated position, as the standard of your training partners increases, so does the difficulty of passing the guard from a seated position.
Here are two standing passes that you will see even at the highest level of competition. These, combined with the armpit control and knee post pass (already posted here on my channel), serve as a very strong standing pass foundation that will serve you well from white to black belt. Remember, there are no black belt techniques, per se, just black ways of doing the same fundamentals you learn at white belt. So study these well and keep improving them over time.

Arm Drags. The First Stand-Up Grappling Technique Everyone Should learn! Training with Cameron Quinn
The arm drag is a very effective skill if you learn it well. It is high percentage, very practical for stand-up fighters from other arts, and easy to learn.
Get the timing right and it is easy. That means drilling the timing until you have it down very effectively. If your opponent ties up a strong collar tie, however, whilst it is not impossible, it can be very difficult. A good collar tie from a good opponent is very tough. I present a couple of ways here to deal with it and transition from the usual 2-on-1 (Russian Tie) to the arm drag.
For karate-ka, the initial arm movement is the Uchi Uke inside block. Then the hand continues in a Tensho movement exactly like the fourth movement out of the Tensho kata. Once the hand is cleared, the second hand comes almose like a second uchi-uke with the other hand to capture the opponent's bicep and drag it through, past your body. Hence the technique being called an "arm drag".
This is absolutely one of the first techniques any stand-up fighter transitioning to Range Four (Gyaku-te, stand-up grapple) should learn. In a future video we'll work on defences.
