LIVE - Hummingbirds 8-19-2023 Evening
Live - Hummingbirds on Cougar Ridge Ranch
Cougar Ridge Ranch is the summer breeding ground
for 4 species of hummingbirds (listed below).
Typically we have hundreds if not thousands of birds through the summer.
We usually have to fill our 12 - 80oz feeders and 8 smaller feeders every day with 4-5 gallons of sugar water. Yes we typically go through 12-18 25lb bags of white sugar every summer just feeding hummingbirds.
This year in late may the hummingbirds were here in record numbers, they were like a hive of bees swarming the feeders but then we had 5 nights that fell below 20 degrees F and all of a sudden, after the 2nd night we began to notice fewer and fewer birds.
We found little dead hummingbirds all over the ground under trees and after the 5th night we only had as many as 10 birds feeding.
All of our neighbors for miles around noticed the drop off in bird numbers.
It was such a loss that we took down all but 3 of our big feeders.
As the summer goes on, about the first to middle of July & August we should see the numbers increase as the baby birds fledge and leave the nests.
Notice that all of the territorial males will leave the young hummingbirds alone on the feeders. They seem to sense the clumsy flying and perching skills.
You'll also notice that they're much smaller than the adults for the first couple of weeks.
About Mid August we will also see the population explode as the hummingbirds from much farther north begin arriving, already on their migration.
They'll hang out and sip the swagga and rest up for their next leg south.
Usually about Labor Day 99% of the hummingbirds will leave and start their migration south. It's an all at once event and it happens just after dawn.
If you're lucky enough to see it, it looks like a flock of tiny blackbirds leaving.
There are stragglers that stay behind, some even until mid October, usually females with late hatches and small chicks. We seldom see any males after the mass exodus and then the area around the feeders is calm and plesant with no males fighting. Just females and juveniles.
We've had them hang around until the temps are getting close to freezing at night and then POOF! They're gone all at once too.
They head south to Arizona, California and Mexico for the winter and the males will arrive again in April and the females will arrive in May.
HUMMINGBIRDS ON THE RANCH
=============
BLACK CHINNED [Archilochus alexandri] (most prevalent here)
=============
A medium sized bird about 4" in lenght
Males have a velvety black throat with a thin, iridescent purple gorget (throat) Females have a pale throat
Both have dull metallic green on their flanks with dull metalic green above and dull grayish-white below.
Males are extremely territorial and court females by swooping down from 65 to 100 feet then powering back up.
When other males (or females) encroach in their territory they will dart side to side 3-4 feet making as much noise with their wings as possible.
They will chase other hummingbirds even making contact collisions to make their point.
=============
BROAD TAIL [Selasphorus platycercus](looks like Ruby Throated)
=============
The broad-tailed hummingbird is a medium sized bird about 4" in length. It is one of the seven species of Selasphorus including the Rufous and Calliope.
Males have a ruby gorget (throat) and both male and female have iridescent green backs and crowns with white breasts.
=============
RUFOUS [Selasphorus rufus] (very dominant RED birds)
=============
The rufous hummingbird is a small bird about 8cm (3") long. They weight 2-5grams. They have a long slender and very straight bill.
They are one of the feistiest of all of the hummingbirds, probably because they arrive late in the territorial season and need to be dominant to get a place.
Males have an iridescent rugous (very rusty red) face, back, flanks and tail with a white breast. Some rufous males have an iridescent green back and/or crown.
Females have green backs and upper parts with some white showing. They have white breasts and some iridescent red/orange feathers on their throat. They have a dark tail with wihte tips and a red fufous base.
They are incredible distance fliers known for flying 2,000 miles during migration.
They usually arrive a few weeks late to their summer breeding grounds but with their feisty attitudes quickly take over feed sources.
They are very territorial and willing to fight any bird making airborne contact that is on a feed source that they claim.
=============
CALLIOPE [Selasphorus calliope] (the second smallest of all of the hummingbirds)
=============
Males have white and bright red wine collored vertical striped throats
Females have light dotted throat stripes

How High's the Water Mama? In Wells, Cisterns, Tanks, Missile Silos, Caves, Pools, Rivers, Streams
Measure the depth of water in wells, cisterns, large tanks or you name it.
Make a portable electronic water depth finder
Make an electronic water depth meter aka: Depth Sounder or water depth sensor
If you need to know how far down the water is in your water well or any other place, you can make a portable electronic water sounder meter for pennies compared to the cost of buying a commercial unit.

SEPTIC TANK SUPERBUGS How To Make Them and Save THOUSANDS of Dollars in Pumping & Repairs
Rotten Tomatoes can save you $$$$'s
THIS IS NOT A JOKE! This prevents Clogs and Backups.
Making Your Own Microbials and Enzymes for SEPTIC TANKS and CESSPOOLS will save you thousands of dollars in pumping fees and leach line replacement.
Never flush feminine hygiene products or wipes down your toilet.
Use Standard Scott Tissue, Scott Tissue for RV's or Kirkland Brand tissue from Costco
First you should know that in a perfect world most septic tanks can operate just fine on their own without any additives HOWEVER, we don't live in a perfect world.
I like to err on the side of conservancy and caution and treat my tanks as a preventative measure vs wait and see if it's working fine or WHOA all of a sudden there's a costly issue.
I'm going to show you how to rejuvenate the bugs in your septic tank every 3-4 months after your initial shock treatment, so that your can be like ours was and have the pumping service say; you didn't need to do this, it was working fine...
Septic tanks and cesspools operate on the principal of bacteria that eats or digests the stuff that gets flushed down but there's a caveat here, when you clean your sinks and showers and toilets with chlorine bleach and other bacteria killing chemicals, it's a good practice for cleanliness and hygiene BUT these chemicals also kill the bacteria in your septic tank or cesspool and once that happens, the poop and paper is not getting broken down and removed and your leach lines plug up and that backs up into your septic or cesspool and you start noticing stuff coming up in your tub and toilets.
For me it's easier to know that I'm always putting new bacteria and enzymes in so the back up problem will not occur at my house!
SHOCK TREATMENT
Use this as your initial treatment if you've never done anything to your septic tank or cesspool or if you've just had it pumped out.
This is just to make sure that you've got a plentiful supply of bacteria rolling and digesting in your system and giving it a head start.
In a month you'll add the maintenance treatment which will just add to and amplify the beneficial bacteria in your system.
SHOCK TREATMENT INGREDIENTS
A bucket, a small 2 gallon bucket will do or a large pot.
1/2 c of bread yeast
3 cups of lukewarm water
2 cups of white sugar
2 cups of cornmeal and
3-6 or even more ROTTEN TOMATOES
Grind up the rotten tomatoes in a blender and set it aside
This will provide the enzymes that will amplify the bacteria
Mix the water, cornmeal, sugar and yeast in the bucket and stir it for 2 minutes or until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Wait for it to begin to really bubble
Now pour the tomato puree in the bucket of bubbling bacteria and stir it up...
You're going to pour the contents down the toilet that is closet to your septic tank.
Flush the toilet first and wait for it to recharge it's water supply...
Now pour the bucket in as fast as the toilet will handle it without overflowing
You don't need to pour this in every toilet, one toilet is good enough as this is just the delivery funnel to the septic tank.
Pouring this mixture may start the siphon of the toilet but whether it does or doesn't, be sure to flush the toilet at least twice afterward.
Wait 5 minutes and flush it again and repeat this step one more time.
MAINTENANCE RECIPE
Use this every 4 months to maintain the good bacteria in your septic tank or cesspool.
This time we're going to use 1/2 of the yeast as your first shock treatment put in a good start.
ITEMS
A bucket, a small 2 gallon bucket will do or a large pot.
1/4 c of bread yeast
3 cups of lukewarm water
2 cups of white sugar
2 cups of cornmeal and
3 or even more ROTTEN TOMATOES
Follow the mixing and flushing instructions above.
The enzyme group is called: Pectinolytic [pek-ti-nō-lit-ik] enzymes

Rendering Beef Fat into Tallow
Make Your Own Tallow and stop paying high prices for it.
If you want to know how to make Tallow yourself, vs buying it, this video will show you how.
WHAT IS IS USED FOR:
Energy for your outside dogs and cats in the winter,
Suet for birds,
Energy and nutrition for your chickens in the winter,
And at 130 calories per teaspoon, you COULD use it as survival food, especially in winter.
Mixing with other meats that don't have enough fat like elk.
People are using it as a high caloric food and as a health supplement.
After 100+ years, it is now used again as a skin care product again made into creams and lotions.
It can be turned into the oldest type of hand soap (Tallow Soap) and its popularity is now coming back.
It is also made into skin and lip balms.
And as I said in the video, it makes very long lasting candles, albeit the smell of these candles, smells like cooking hamburger or a deep fryer vs the paraffin wax smell of commercial candle wax
WHERE CAN YOU GET IT
If you have a small hometown abattoir (slaughterhouse) near you, you can usually get big chunks of beef fat for free, mostly they discard it. Large meat processing plants sell every part of the animal.
Also, ask your local butcher. They can get it for you from the slaughterhouse but you'll pay a per pound rate for it...
I have heard that it goes for over $1/lb and that is not rendered, clarified or filtered.
You can also buy it in buckets at your local grocery store and online and this is already rendered, clarified and filtered.
Tallow is a trans fat, one of the worst fats you can put in your body, but there is a trend nowadays where people are eating more and more of it.
It is common in your hamburger and steaks.
When we harvest Elk, they are so lean and have so little fat in their meat, we typically have to add 10-12% beef Tallow to the ground elk-burger meat to get it to stick together when cooking. Without the beef Tallow, the elk burger just falls into tiny little particles as it cooks.
Also without beef Tallow mixed in, you can't cook elk burgers on the grill or even keep them together to get onto a bun...
Elk burger with and without beef Tallow does make a to die for Meatloaf, Ms Chrissie makes this for me about once a month.
WHAT IS TALLOW
Tallow is rendered and purified fat from ruminant animals like; cattle, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, deer, elk, moose and caribou
Each animals fat has a particular taste associated with that animal so I don't recommend mixing the fats if YOU are going to consume them, but for other animal uses, mixing is okay.
Pigs are not ruminants and Rendering PIG fat makes LARD not TALLOW
HOW LONG WILL IT LAST
In its raw form, at room temperature, it will go rancid and spoil within days but if you render, clarify and filter it, it will last indefinitely in the Freezer.
It will last up to a year on the counter and up to 2 years in the fridge, but storing it in vacuum bags in the freezer will keep it for years.

FREE SNOW
Come -N- Get It!
Our annual snowfall at the Ranch is typically about 4-5 feet but every 3-5 years we get some doozies.
Here's some data:
In 2017 we got ☃️ 122” ⛄️ at the ranch, that was a killer year... we were living in a Luge, walking in tunnels of snow. There's a video of Zeus walking around at night with his headlamp around his neck here.
In 2018 we got 😫18.5”😩 (below normal)
Never even started the snow plow... worked like it was summer, although it was very cold on buildings, barns and projects through the winter.
The following summer the forest was so dry and the timber was so thick you couldn't even walk through it. The forest service has been very stingy allowing anyone private or commercial to cut ANY wood, standing dead or not. In 2014 we had a huge pine beetle infestation and from the air it looked like 40% of the forest died. The forest service still disallowed any cutting...their excuse is they don't want roads into the wilderness because irresponsible people will drive deep into the forest and cause forest fires and burn the forest down...
Well in the summer of 2018, the forest was extremely dry and some irresponsible campers on the edge of the forest near Dollar Ridge Peak up from Solder Creek reservoir, left their campfire burning and went home on a Sunday afternoon. The campfire got out of the firepit and caught beetle killed trees on fire... the resulting fire was known as the "Dollar Ridge Fire" and ended up burning almost 70,000 acres of forest, 75 homes and damaged 6 other homes. It wiped out numerous private summer cabin and camping sites and all of the possessions that people were keeping there in sheds, camp trailers and containers.
The fire came within 6 miles of Cougar Ridge Ranch. While everyone else was evacuated, we were allowed to stay as we had generators and we had the only working weather station connected to the internet in the forest, this was because the power had been shut off to the entire forest community to prevent additional electrical wildfires.
In 2019 the following winter, we got ⛄️99.5”☃️
In 2020 we got ❄️48.5”❄️ (normal year)
In 2021 we got ❄️41.5”❄️ (normal year)
In 2022 we got 😫31.25”😫 (slightly below normal year)
This was so little snow over 6 months that I never started the snow plow.
2023 - And as of posting this video March 12, 2023 with 8 weeks of snow season left we’re up to
⛄️89.5”⛄️

FreezeDryer: Making Onion Powder
In this video you'll learn how to make freeze dried Onion Powder for food storage and cooking.
It takes about 20-25 lbs of onions and 46-55 hours in the medium Harvest Right freeze dryer depending on how heavy you load it.
If any onions do not completely dry out, you can put them in the oven a cookie sheet at 150-175°F for an hour.
Some ovens nowadays will not go lower than 175°F so watch your onions carefully.
Be sure to wear rubber gloves as the allicin in the onions penetrates your skin and you'll smell like onions for part of the day or night.
Onions have sugar in them so be sure to dry them thoroughly and to use oxygen packets and silicone moisture packets when you store them for short or long term storage. This will keep the moisture out and prevent your powder from going black.
I use the moisture packets in EVERY pouch I put freeze dried products in as they absorb any moisture left over and prevent the product/food from spoiling while it is stored.

How to Hook Up A 3-Point Post Hole Digger, Drill / Auger
Post hole diggers on a tractor are life savers.
If you've evert slaved over an ArmStrong Powered post hole digger or just used a shovel you know the pain I speak of.
They can be challenging to hook up if you've never done it.
Things to remember:
3 point augers do not require and can not use a handylink top link so you'll have to take the one off of your tractor and set it aside for this tool.
Also;
1. The HIGHER you set the main frame center point on the auger to the tractor, the LOWER the auger can go into the ground and the the lift on the tractor will be less..
2. The LOWER you set the main frame center point on the auger to the tractor, the HIGHER the auger will sit on the tractor, the higher the tractor can lift it but the ground penetration could be substantially less.
Be careful here as lifting it too high can bind the swivel couplings at each end of the PTO shaft.
Always make sure you have a working PTO cover and connect the chains of the cover to the auger on one end and the tractor on the other.
This keeps the PTO shaft covered while it's rotating to protect anyone who may come near (you should NEVER allow anyone near the shaft while it is in operation).
3 Point augers are not built for the smaller tractors, the arms won't go wide enough to accommodate even the smallest auger.
Sorry if that affects you.
These things come in very handy not just for digging post holes, but for planting trees and to dig a quick six foot grave for a dead animal or treasures you want to bury!!

Wisdom of Life & How I Plow Snow On The Ranch
Life is like a Snow Storm... if you don't have a plan on how to deal with every aspect, it can crush you and kill your spirit.
With up to 1-1/2 miles of road to plow to get to the state highway having an efficient plan is a must.
We can get up to 3 feet in a night so having the equipment and the plan of how to move it all is essential.
We regularly receive 1 to 3 feet of snow per night in Jan and Feb and it can snow on us up to the middle of May.
Watch as I show you how I made my plan that I follow every time on how to move snow in an orderly and efficient manner...and it can still take me up to 8 hours to plow it all and many times, just to start over the next morning.

The Ole Fashioned way...by Hand
While plowing snow I ran into a buried tree stump and seriously bent the scraper blade on my tractor.
The steel was cold and the bend was so fast it cracked the steel not to mention put a twist in the blade with a giant buckle in the steel.
This requires finesse and brute coaxing to straighten the blade body, the hardened steel knife blade bolted onto the bottom which bent and broke, and take the twist out simultaneously.
It takes a large rosebud from my oxy/acetylene torch that puts out about 150,000 BTU's and turns the metal cherry red and malleable.
Applying the heat strategically will also allow the metal blade body and scraper to untwist as it straightens, just the opposite of how it initially bent and twisted.
Heating the steel anneals or softens the steel
Hammering it and hammering it and hammering it (which I don't show you much of) causes the molecules to tighten up and puts the strength back into it

I spent 1 year researching, planning, testing and pre-building, then I spend the next entire summer from late March through October building them.
Watch and you'll see us in coats at first with bare dirt in the garden, then frost cloth covering the plants in the planter boxes, then shorts, then coats again at the end...
The last scene is me sitting in one high tunnel installing the blower fan.
It's cold and raining outside and 85°F inside, and it's freezing at night but the plants are still thriving.
The garden went for 2 extra months in the new greenhouses before it got too cold for the plants at night.
Even in the winter when it's been 5-10°F outside during the day, it's still making it up to 80°F as soon as the light hits the tunnels.
Normally we would plant our garden about the first week in June, then it would be dead from the first frost before the 15th of September just 4 months later.
Now we might get 7 or maybe even 8 months of growing with these wonderful structures.
The cost was about $1,500 each but I also used a ton of scrap and junk stuff that I could find around the ranch.
In the year of planning, I knew I would need a LOT of heavy wood to build these and Covid and the mandates and shutdowns had already driven the cost of lumber off the chart.
So during the planning year, I designed and built a sawmill from scratch (see my building a sawmill video) and then while the price was still low, I got a load of logs trucked in so I could cut my own wood for all of my projects.
Lots more projects coming.

Storing RAW Carrots & Beets for Winter

This video will show you how we store Beets, Carrots, Radishes, turnips, parsnips and other root veggies through the winter without them going soft and drying out and shriveling up.
You’ll need a sealable container that can keep moisture in.
Some say to leave the lid off or make holes for air, we do neither but we do open the containers about once a week for inspection.
Make sure you keep the soil moist. If it dries out, it will dry the roots and they will wilt, shrivel and rot.

This video shows you how to peel small and tiny carrots without loosing much carrot and without endangering your fingers.
It works just as fast and easy for LARGE carrots too.
The stainless steel pot scrubber is like hundreds of tiny very sharp peeling blades that are strong enough to take the peel off of root veggies but not firm enough to cut your fingers.

LIVE - Hummingbird Cam2022 | Last Feed of 2022
Previously Recorded LIVE Feed - Hummingbirds on Cougar Ridge Ranch
More Details @CougarRidgeRanch.com
This feed goes live at first light & stops at last light.
The best viewing time is at Dawn & Dusk when they are all drinking but they are at the feeders during all the daylight hours.
We apologize that we can't give you any better quality resolution but this is as much bandwidth as we have in the mountains.
Cougar Ridge Ranch is the summer breeding ground
for 4 species of hummingbirds (listed below).
Typically we have hundreds if not thousands of birds through the summer.
We usually have to fill our 8 - 80oz feeders & 13 smaller feeders every day with 4-5 gallons of sugar water. Yes we typically go through 15-20 25lb bags of white sugar every summer just feeding hummingbirds.
This year in late may the hummingbirds were here in record numbers, they were like a hive of bees swarming the feeders but then we had 5 nights that fell below 20°F & all of a sudden, after the 2nd night we noticed fewer and fewer birds.
We found little dead hummingbirds all over the ground under trees & after the 5th night we only had as many as 10 birds feeding.
All of our neighbors for miles around noticed the drop off in bird numbers.
It was such a loss that we took down all but 3 of our big feeders.
As the summer goes on, about the first to middle of July & August we should see the numbers increase as the baby birds fledge & leave the nests.
They'll hang out & sip the swagga and rest up for their next leg south.
By Labor Day 99% of the hummingbirds have left on their migration south (usually Aug 20-25). It's an all at once event & it happens just after dawn.
If you're lucky enough to see it, it looks like a cloud of tiny birds leaving.
There are stragglers that stay behind, some even until mid October, usually females with late hatches and small chicks. We seldom see any males after the mass exodus & then the area around the feeders is calm & pleasant with no males fighting. Just females and juveniles.
We've had them hang around until the temps are getting close to freezing at night & then POOF! They're gone all at once too.
They head south to Arizona, California and Mexico for the winter & the males will arrive again in April and the females will arrive in May.
HUMMINGBIRDS ON THE RANCH
=============
BLACK CHINNED [Archilochus alexandri]
=============
A medium sized bird about 4" in length
Males have a velvety black throat with a thin, iridescent purple gorget (throat) Females have a pale throat
Both have dull metallic green on their flanks with dull metallic green above & dull grayish-white below.
Males are extremely territorial & court females by swooping down from 65 to 100 feet then powering back up.
When other males (or females) encroach in their territory they will dart side to side 3-4 feet making as much noise with their wings as possible.
They will chase other hummingbirds even making contact collisions to make their point.

BROAD TAIL [Selasphorus platycercus](looks like Ruby Throated)
=============
The broad-tailed hummingbird is a medium sized bird about 4" in length. It is one of the seven species of Selasphorus including the Rufous and Calliope.
Males have a ruby gorget (throat) and both male & female have iridescent green backs & crowns with white breasts.
=============
RUFOUS [Selasphorus rufus] (very dominant RED birds)
=============
The rufous hummingbird is a small bird about 8cm (3") long. They weight 2-5grams. They have a long slender and very straight bill.
They are one of the feistiest of all the hummingbirds, probably because they arrive late in the territorial season and need to be dominant to get a place.
Males have an iridescent rufous (very rusty red) face, back, flanks & tail with a white breast. Some rufous males have an iridescent green back &/or crown.
Females have green backs & upper parts with some white showing. They have white breasts & some iridescent red/orange feathers on their throat. They have a dark tail with white tips & a red rufous base.
They are incredible distance fliers known for flying 2,000 miles during migration.
They usually arrive a few weeks late to their summer breeding grounds but with their feisty attitudes quickly take over feed sources.
They are very territorial & willing to fight any bird that is on a feed source that they claim with hard airborne contact.
=============
CALLIOPE [Selasphorus calliope] (the second smallest of all of the hummingbirds)
=============
Males have white and bright red wine colored vertical striped throats
Females have light dotted throat stripes
