Curriculum Choices 2023-2024 School Year
We started our school year in July. I share what we are using, what we planned to use, how that changed and how we are using our resources.
Making American History fun
In this video I explain how I'm setting up an activity for my daughter to identify and name the original 13 states. She will be using many skills including measurements, reading, following directions, reading 3 digit numbers, American History, food science along with others. After all her hard work, we will enjoy a nice snack! This assignment was not my idea, it came from the Tuttle Twins American History textbook. I just altered it slightly to make it our own. If you enjoy this video, follow me for more and purchase the textbook and curriculum!

Homeschool Planner layout for 2022-2023 school year
The Waldock Way had a wonderful planner for homeschooling families as does The Homeschool Mom. They both have elements that I like, so I merged the two in order to get what I need. That's one of the greatest thing about homeschooling, you can tweak anything to fit your needs. I hope this video gives you some ideas on how to set up your homeschool planner and schedule.

Tuttle Twins flip through and review
In my home the Tuttle Twins are well loved characters! My 6 year old has learned many great lessons about economics, liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government. I've learned a ton along with her! Connor Boyack, the author, has done a wonderful job at taking topics and concepts that are difficult for some adults to understand and making them understandable for even young kids!

First grader reading Pete the Cat book
My daughter is 6 years old and is in "first" grade. I put quotations around first because I don't do grade levels. But I know most people do, so for simplicity I included it.
My daughter is so proud of herself, now that she's able to read books from the library! She loves that she is capable and I'm proud of her for how far she's come. Just a few months ago she was reading BOB books and now she can read library books!
This is her reading 'Pete the Cat: Pete's Big Lunch' she asked me to record, so I decided to share her progress.

Math in real life
I went walking on a loop trail that's about a mile and a half. Which was our PE for the day. It's right on the water and we got to see some turtles hanging out and enjoying the warmer weather. I used this opportunity to incorporate some math! We counted the turtles as we seen them, a total of 32. We also did a simple addition problem of 5+4=9. It was all natural and not forced. I love natural learning when it happens! Some would say this is an unschooling approach. Which we do occasionally, I just can't commit to it full time.
Groundhog Lap Book
Since Groundhog Day was earlier this week, I decided my daughter and I would do a Groundhog Day Lap Book. We learned different names of the creature, about the seasonal behavior of them, hibernation, shadows. We learned about the history of the holiday in both the US and Canada. It was a fun litte project. Most of the activities came from the Homeschool Helper website. I totally recommend her as a resource! I did omit a couple of her suggested activities and included a poem I found online. My daughter memorized the poem.

BOB Books level 1 reader
The 'ready for kindergarten' package from Bob books has level 1 readers, for use at the end of the kit. My daughter is reading "Buddy to the rescue" from the it. She's never read it before. This video doesn't show her reading the entire book because I slipped up and said her actual name. For security reasons, I have cut off the last several seconds. She got through about half the book in this video. You can see how the book is written and how it's able to be read at a level one. Another added bonus, this was her first level one book she's read on her own!

Hooked on Phonics review of unit 1
My daughter recently started doing Hooked on Phonics (HoP) again. We took off about 3 months. We did lesson four, she read the book to go along then we reviewed the whole unit. The unit is comprised of 4 lessons. The second unit is 5 lessons and the third unit is 6 lessons. At the end of each unit there is a book for the child to read and review of all the lessons. The review is short. I don't feel like it's enough and want my daughter to review all the words. So I made a poster with all the words and had her read them all. I didn't include that in this video. This video is solely of my 6 year old reading the review of unit 1 in HoP. She loves having the stickers at the end of a story or review. She loves the feeling of accomplishment that comes along and she can show it off.
Indoor garden lighthut
In Exploring Creation with Botany from Apologia, there's an experiment to make a light hut and grow a couple of plants in it. Two weeks ago we planted oregano, lemon balm, chamomile and basil. I decided herbs were the safest way to go since it's the middle of autumn. I just wanted to share this fun activity with y'all!

Thanksgiving lap book
This is an update to the video I posted last week. Z has already finished her Thanksgiving lap book. I was hoping it'd last all week, but it only made it only to two days. She loves these activities and I couldn't tell her no when she's having fun and learning! So she whipped right through it.

Thanksgiving lap book
Over the weekend I decided I wanted to try my hand at making a lap book and unit study. I have developed a lap book completely on my own with a resource from the library and some papers I've found online and printed. I hope you enjoy and find these ideas helpful!

Hooked on Phonics
My daughter is 6 and is working on first grade level 1 in Hooked on Phonics (HoP). These words she is reading are from the first 3 lessons. She struggles with remembering TH has two sounds. I drew a picture of a hand with an arrow pointing at the thumb to remind her of that TH sound. I made sure to draw the hand the same color as the TH in the words with that TH sound. The other TH sound is in another color. That way she can see the difference. We are enjoying HoP. It's easy to use and it's taught my daughter to read way more than I expected in a short amount of time. We bought this program about 5-6 weeks ago. We took two weeks off from it because everyone in my house was sick. So we've only been using it 3-4 weeks. We've been doing it twice a week. You can use this program more or less often. It's important to find what works for you and your family. Don't force them to do it daily if it isn't fun to them. Let them go at their own pace.

Math with Confidence review
Math with Confidence is a great curriculum. It's laid out perfectly so you know exactly what to say, and teach. But it just did not work for us. I go over the things we liked and disliked about this curriculum.
I do not get paid to review curriculum.
Please join me on discord. We have a great homeschooling support group of people from all over the US. Please come and join the fun! We share information, support, advice (when asked) and we offer free classes to those in our group. Here's the link to join:

American flag
I know my channel is about homeschooling and this isn't directly about homeschooling, but it's worth the acknowledgement.
I went to a local park with my children to do our school work there. As soon as we arrived, we noticed they placed a ton of American flags in the open field. I appreciate that my city still supports and displays our country's flag.

Math, science, history and art projects
We have been working on a few different projects lately. We did a poster that is writing, reading, and math. We did a science experiment that also showed how colors naturally mix to make other colors (art). We also made a lap book for history. Lap books are a great way to teach or reenforce a lesson. All these activities are hands on which many kids enjoy!

Early reading with BOB books
BOB books are great for children just learning to read. My daughter loves them. They contain short sentences and are often repetitive. The books aren't in full color, this helps keep the book interesting enough but not so much the child focuses too much on the pictures. These are great confidence builders!

Real life PE/Science/History/Health all in one
Today we are at our local park. We often come here and to the library at the same time. We have studied some of the bushes and trees in the park. Which gives us all these lessons in one! Science- nature; history- how they came here (the mulberry tree is an invasive species); PE- walking, playing, running, climbing; health- exercise and learning the health benefits of different berries. Education is everywhere, you just need to find it!

School set up
I believe that he education is a parental right. That it is my job as a parent to raise and educate my children. This is our homeschool set up, the start of school year 2021-2022. First official year of homeschooling! I am excited to see what this year has in store!
