Cambridge Sandals: a light shoe, especially worn in warm weather, consisting of a bottom part held onto the foot by straps: Biblical: Sandals: A kind of shoe, consisting of a sole fastened to the foot Items worn to protect the feet. Ancient shoes are well known from paintings, sculptures, and carved reliefs. The shoe was considered the humblest article of clothing and could be bought cheaply. Two types of shoes existed: slippers of soft leather and the more popular sandals with a hard leather sole. Thongs secured the sandal across the insole and between the toes. Although shoes could be bought at a low price, they were often repaired by the poor. Shoes were removed at the doorway of the tent or house, or during a period of mourning. Shoes were also removed as evidence of humility in the presence of kings. In early Israel, legal contracts and oaths were often sealed with the removal and giving of a shoe by one party (Ruth 4:7 ). Going barefoot was a sign of poverty and reproach. During New Testament times, Jewish practice forbade the wearing of sandals with multilayered leather soles nailed together, as this was the shoe worn by Roman soldiers. In the Bible, sandals can symbolize sonship, healing, kindness, and tender mercies. When a father gives his son shoes, it can mean that the son is no longer a slave or hired servant, but is welcome back into the household as his son. In the Bible, taking off one's shoes can also be a sign of respect, humility, or reverence. For example, Moses stood on holy ground and took off his shoes, and Joshua was told to take off his sandals by the Captain of the Lord's Army in Joshua 5:15. In the Bible, sandals can symbolize a number of things, including: Humility and servant hood Sandals can represent the humility and servant hood required for those who carry out Jesus' mission. For example, in Matthew 3:11, John the Baptist says he is not worthy of carrying the Lord's sandals. Readiness for action Sandals can symbolize readiness for action, such as when Jesus asks his disciples to wear sandals, which means to be ready to welcome an experience of God. Minimum possessions Sandals can be an example of the need for minimum possessions in God's service. For example, royal or golden shoes can denote authority and kingship. Sandals were normally worn by officials, soldiers, or messengers, while the poor often walked barefoot. ( James 2:2 ) "Put a ring on his hand" - Long ago, presenting a ring to someone was a sign of great affection and also a symbol of being placed in an office of authority; among the rich it was a sign of wealth and dignity. Pharaoh removed his signet ring and put it on Joseph's hand when installing him into office in Egypt (Genesis 41:42). In the book of Esther the King took off his ring, the royal signet by which the decrees of government were signed, and gave it to Mordecai (Esther 8:2). The ring showed Pharaoh's affection for Joseph and the King's affection for Mordecai and transferred to them all power and authority necessary for the promotions they received, one as Governor and the other as Prime Minister. The ring placed on the hand of the Prodigal evidenced the great affection the Father had toward him. It also announced, once again, the transfer of inheritance which would ordinarily have gone to the first-born. A ring is a sign of authority. When kings made decrees - they would melt wax and put the impression of their ring on it. Once they put the imprint of their ring on their orders it became law and could not be repealed / withdrawn. The Prodigal Father is thus giving back the younger son the authority that he enjoyed as a son - thus restoring all his privileges. The younger son was wanting to offer to come back as a servant - but The Father accepted him back as a son - even though he came back dirty and perhaps stinking of pigs excreta. The “ring” also held significant value. It wasn’t just a piece of jewelry. The ring likely was one of the father’s signet rings. In ancient times, a signet ring would often be used to seal official documents, representing the king’s authority and confirming tribal identity. By looking at the ring, you can tell what family legacy the person wearing it belongs to. This ring would have had more than just financial value; it symbolized the father’s authority and trust, effectively restoring the son’s position in the family. Given that a ring is a circle without a beginning or end, it can also be seen as a symbol of eternity, continuity, and completeness, which parallels the themes of endless love and grace throughout the parable. Symbolized by authority, identity, and family heritage, they were used to seal documents, essentially serving as a signature. By giving the ring to the son, the father was bestowing trust and authority and reinstating his son fully into the family’s operations and decisions. In Scripture, the vesture of purity or righteousness, and of happiness. Job 29. Luke 15. This robe is described in the Amplified Bible as (a [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves). It was a very special garment that signified his father’s love and favor, as well as the destiny he would one day fulfill. For Joseph, it would be a daily reminder that he was covered in his father’s love. Every time Satan looked at Joseph, he saw the robe, which constantly reminded him of his own inability to destroy the ultimate plans and purposes that God had for Joseph. Genesis 37:3-4 (NLT) 3 Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. "But in truth it was not a "coat of many colors," but a tunic reaching down to the arms and feet, such as princes and persons of distinction wore, and it betokened to Joseph's brothers only too clearly . . . " (Bible History Old Testament). "The references to Joseph's coat of many colors (Genesis 37:3, 13, 12) and "garments of divers colors" (2Samuel 13:18 - 19) probably do not mean the color of the garment at all, but the form . . ." (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia). "The more luxurious classes of society - e.g., women of royal blood (2Samuel 13:18 - 19) and men of leisure - wore tunics with sleeves. This is the meaning of the Hebrew "passim" occurring in the description of the garment presented to Joseph by his father (Genesis 37:3). It was not "of many colors" . . . the color of the shirt worn This Robe made him stand out. He had a purpose that goes beyond what could be imaged. Jesus had a very similar robe: John 19:23-24 (NLT) 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice[a] for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.”[b] So that is what they did. First, he was given a robe - a covering. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve lived the carefree life before sin, and did it completely naked. Stark naked! There was no shame because there was no understanding of right, wrong, or not living up to an expectation of what they should be. But once they committed the sin of not obeying God, one we’ve all committed, they realized their nakedness and covered themselves with leaves. The leaves hid their nakedness. The robe given to the son represented the salvation received from Christ. It is His righteousness, His perfection that covers our sins. We’re no longer subjects of shame or guilt. Because we accept Christ as our savior, He does just that. He saves us from ourselves. Isaiah 61:10 (NLT) 10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. See Ex. 29:55. 1Sam. 24:4. Matt. 27:28. 2. A splendid female gown or garment. 2Sam. 13. 3. An elegant dress; splendid attire. 4. In Scripture, the vesture of purity or righteousness, and of happiness. Job 29. Luke 15. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (NLT) 18 “Suppose a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or mother, even though they discipline him. 19 In such a case, the father and mother must take the son to the elders as they hold court at the town gate. 20 The parents must say to the elders, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious and refuses to obey. He is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of his town must stone him to death. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you, and all Israel will hear about it and be afraid. This robe is described in the Amplified Bible as (a [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves). It was a very special garment that signified his father’s love and favor, as well as the destiny he would one day fulfill. For Joseph, it would be a daily reminder that he was covered in his father’s love. Fruit: 1. In a general sense, whatever the earth produces for the nourishment of animals, or for clothing or profit. Among the fruits of the earth are included not only corn of all kinds, but grass, cotton, flax, grapes and all cultivated plants. In this comprehensive sense, the word is generally used in the plural. I want you to think about what is being said here Luke 18:21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! James 5:7 (NLT) 7 Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.
