"Danny Boy" is a song with lyrics written by English lawyer Frederic Weatherly in 1910, and set to the traditional Irish melody of "Londonderry Air" in 1913.
In 1910, in Bath, Somerset, the English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly initially wrote the words to "Danny Boy" to a tune other than "Londonderry Air". An alternative story is that his sister-in-law Margaret Enright Weatherly sent him a copy of "Londonderry Air" in 1913 and Weatherly modified the lyrics of "Danny Boy" to fit its rhyme and meter. A different story has Jess singing the air to Weatherly in 1912 with different lyrics. Yet another story is that Frederic did not set the poem to any tune, but that, in 1913, Margaret, who, with her husband Edward Weatherly, was living at the Neosho mine near Ouray, Colorado in the US, set it to the "Londonderry Air" which she had heard as a child in California played by her father and other Irish railway workers.
Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular songs of the new century. Ernestine Schumann-Heink produced the first recording of "Danny Boy" in 1915.
Jane Ross of Limavady is credited with collecting the melody of "Londonderry Air" in the mid-19th century from a musician she encountered.

The origins of ‘Carrickfergus’ may be disputed, but it has nonetheless achieved the status of one of the greatest and most enduring Irish folk songs. Named after the town of Carrickfergus, in Co. Antrim, it was officially lifted from obscurity by the folk singer, songwriter and playwright, Dominic Behan – brother of the Rabelaisian playwright Brendan Behan – who in turn credits the eight times Oscar-nominated UK-Irish actor Peter O’Toole with rediscovering the song and singing it to him. Behan published ‘Carrickfergus’ in 1965, adding a verse – and since then it has become part of the canon, sung by leading Irish musicians and international superstars alike, including Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry, The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Charlotte Church and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Traditional - Sweet Nightingale - English Folk Song - Fingerstyle Guitar
*Folk Songs From Around The World*
Sweet Nightingale, also known as Down in those valleys below, is a Cornish folk song. According to Robert Bell, who published it in his 1846 Ancient Poems, Ballads and Songs of the Peasantry of England, the song "may be confidently assigned to the seventeenth century, [and] is said to be a translation from the Cornish language. We first heard it in Germany, in the pleasure-gardens of the Marienberg, on the Moselle. The singers were four Cornish miners, who were at that time, 1854, employed at some lead mines near the town of Zell. The leader or 'Captain,' John Stocker, said that the song was an established favourite with the lead miners of Cornwall and Devonshire, and was always sung on the pay-days, and at the wakes; and that his grandfather, who died thirty years before, at the age of a hundred years, used to sing the song, and say that it was very old.

Italian Traditional - Torna A Surriento - Fingerstyle Guitar with Tabs - Phillip Gregory
"Torna a Surriento" is a Neapolitan song composed in 1894 by Italian musician Ernesto De Curtis to words by his brother, the poet and painter Giambattista De Curtis. The song was copyrighted officially in 1905, and has become one of the most popular of this traditional genre; others include "'O sole mio", "Funiculì funiculà", and "Santa Lucia".
Tradition holds that the origin of the song dates to 1902, when Guglielmo Tramontano, mayor of Sorrento, asked his friend Giambattista De Curtis to write the song for the Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli, then vacationing at his seaside hotel, the Imperial Hotel Tramontano; it was claimed that the piece was meant to celebrate Zanardelli's stay.
Some claim the song is a plea to Zanardelli to keep his promise to help the impoverished city of Sorrento, which was especially in need of a sewage system. The song reflects the beauty of the city's great surroundings and the love and passion of its citizens.
More recent research indicates that the song may merely have been reworked for the occasion; family papers indicate that the brothers deposited a copy with the Italian Society of Authors and Editors in 1894, eight years before they claimed to have written it.

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne - Acoustic Cover - Phillip Gregory
This song is about Suzanne Verdal, a woman Cohen had a memorable affair with. She was the former wife of the Quebec artist Armand Vaillancourt.
In Cohen's 1975 Greatest Hits album, he explained: "I wrote this in 1966, Suzanne had a room on a waterfront sheet in the port of Montreal. Everything happened just as it was put down. She was the wife of a man I knew. Her hospitality was immaculate. Some months later, I sang it to Judy Collins over the telephone. The publishing rights pilfered in New York City but it is probably appropriate that I don't own this song. Just the other day I heard some people singing it on a ship in the Caspian Sea."
In a 1994 BBC Radio Interview Cohen said: "The song was begun, and the chord pattern was developed, before a woman's name entered the song. And I knew it was a song about Montreal, it seemed to come out of that landscape that I loved very much in Montreal, which was the harbour, and the waterfront, and the sailors' church there, called Notre Dame de Bon Secour, which stood out over the river, and I knew that there're ships going by, I knew that there was a harbour, I knew that there was Our Lady of the Harbour, which was the virgin on the church which stretched out her arms towards the seamen, and you can climb up to the tower and look out over the river, so the song came from that vision, from that view of the river.
At a certain point, I bumped into Suzanne Vaillancourt, who was the wife of a friend of mine, they were a stunning couple around Montreal at the time, physically stunning, both of them, a handsome man and woman, everyone was in love with Suzanne Vaillancourt, and every woman was in love with Armand Vaillancourt. But there was no... well, there was thought, but there was no possibility, one would not allow oneself to think of toiling at the seduction of Armand Vaillancourt's wife. First of all he was a friend, and second of all as a couple they were inviolate, you just didn't intrude into that kind of shared glory that they manifested.
I bumped into her one evening, and she invited me down to her place near the river. She had a loft, at a time when lofts were... the word wasn't used. She had a space in a warehouse down there, and she invited me down, and I went with her, and she served me Constant Comment tea, which has little bits of oranges in it. And the boats were going by, and I touched her perfect body with my mind, because there was no other opportunity. There was no other way that you could touch her perfect body under those circumstances. So she provided the name in the song."

Green Day - Time of your life - Acoustic Cover - Phillip Gregory
Happy New Year!!!! I hope you enjoy my acoustic cover of the Green Day classic, (Good Riddance) Time of your life. This song has been with me since i was very young and it's always been special to me.
Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song when his girlfriend moved to Ecuador to live with her family and continue her schooling. He tried to be levelheaded about it, but to show his anger, he named the song "Good Riddance" and made "Time Of Your Life" the subtitle.
"It's about trying to be cool, accepting that, in life, people go in different directions," Armstrong told Rolling Stone. "People come into your life and it's wonderful, but they seem to go out of your life as quickly as they came in."

Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice (It's Alright) - Acoustic Cover - Phillip Gregory
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” was written and recorded by Bob Dylan. Musically, the tune is lifted from Paul Clayton’s version of the old folk chestnut “Scarlet Ribbons for Her Hair.”
The song is said to be a rather devastating breakup song to Bob Dylan’s then-girlfriend, Suze Rotolo. He met her in New York and their relationship lasted about two years. It was very tempestuous love affair and Dylan evidently grew tired of the drama. Contrary to the song, Dylan’s heart was broken after Rotolo, left him to study at the University of Perugia in Italy. Out of that pain, arose this classic breakup ballad. Dylan re-imagined their parting here as him leaving her.
Bob Dylan cited in the liner notes of this track:
“A lot of people make it sort of a love song – slow and easygoing. But it isn’t a love song. “Bob Dylan cited in the liner notes of this track:

Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad
One of his most reverberant songs, though, is also one of his quietest — at least in its original incarnation. “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” from Springsteen’s 1995 album of the same name, considers the economic forces that have prompted, or maybe forced, the poor and dispossessed to leave their homes and families with the hope, however faint, of finding opportunity elsewhere. The song takes its title from the protagonist in John Steinbeck’s Great Depression-era novel “The Grapes of Wrath,” published in 1939, but the themes Springsteen explores haven’t changed much in the intervening years.
He sings in a weary mumble about the desperation that accompanies hunger, homelessness, police brutality and oppression.

Randy Newman - Feels Like Home (Phillip Gregory Cover)
A very beautiful song which gives the message that 'anything can feel like home', whether it is a person, a place, a hobby or whatever makes you feel like that you should be there.
