Wildlife pond filter (solar powered): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY287fn6p3o&t=5s
This package of solar panel, battery and pump seems to be a really great option for off-grid solar powered hydroponics systems.
It's certainly way better and more reliable than the small panel and pump I was previously using as it will run from first light to an hour or so after sunset, even on dull or rainy days.
I will upload update videos to the Thousand Yard Stare channel to keep you guys updated but I'm expecting great things from these systems this year.

4 in 1 Evergreen Complete 7 & 10 Days After Treatment
#shorts Evergreen Complete: https://geni.us/2gJq
A quick video to show the improvement after treating my lawn 7 and 10 days after using Evergreen Complete.
Currently I only use this treatment sparingly and once a year (usually around late March / early April) due to the chemical component repelling worms from the soil (copper?).
I only use it on the flat lawn shown in the video and not on my other lawns.
It works very well but over-use can result in the worms disappearing from the soil. They will come back after a few months.

Natural Stone Koi Pond 2009
#shorts From my days making ponds in the early 2000's - this was a koi pond made with an outer facing of natural sandstone. Pond is lined with Firestone rubber and has 2 x 15000 pressure filters from Oase and an Oasis 25W UV clarifier.
Pump is an Aquamax 8000.
The water returns to the pond via a stainless steel weir with LED lighting integrated into it. Finished pond was filmed on the last day of the job before fish went in.
You can see the whole project in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M6JK2WfX-E

Microscopic View of White Pumice
#shorts A 300x view of White Pumice (Lava Rock)
http://www.filterpro.co.uk
Pumice is a strange one as it is regularly promoted as a cheap 'DIY' filter media while at the same time a small dense grade of pumice is sold under a brand name for a high price (as something special).
People can't seem to recognize that they are both pumice, just different sizes and different grades.
The grade of pumice in this video is very good since it is highly porous, light and has a decent amount of variability to the internal structure - this is simply sold as 'Pumice' for use in koi shower filters and sumps.
The smaller more dense type sold under a popular brand name (which often contains a lot of junk grey and black rock) has a much more dense internal structure so is way too dense to be of much use, hence the 'manufacturer' recommending a flow rate of only 50 US GPH to allow it to support anaerobic bacteria - at that point the filter is practically a slow flow nitrate reactor. That low flow rate is not feasible in most aquarium or pond filters.
If you're going to buy pumice get the ordinary white pumice as it is much more porous and approx. 10x cheaper than the branded pumice sold in aquarium stores.
White pumice generally has a specific pH or around 8.0 so is more suited to use in koi ponds and aquariums with fish preferring a higher pH with good mineralization in the water (e.g. African cichlids, livebearers, goldfish).
Since pumice is a natural rock it is impossible to work out the surface area per liter / per kilo since every rock differs from each other - some is good (very porous) and some is not so good (more dense) and many of the tunnels and bubbles inside the rock are sealed causing some pieces of natural pumice to float.
When ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate is processed it is a full cycle.
Most filters and filter media only allow for half a job which results in high nitrates which have a long term debilitating effect on the fish .
The eyes don't lie and when you get a zoomed in view of filter media you can make your own decisions......why do no other channels show INSIDE filter media they (are often paid to) promote?
Because "trust the science".
Nope, trust what you see.
Full video here: https://youtu.be/QTtAUYR67Eg
A guide to how much media to use for various stocking scenarios to achieve a FULL CYCLE can be found on the Q&A page of the FilterPro site: http://www.filterpro.co.uk as well as lots of other useful information.
Avoid using conditioners which bind / detoxify / remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they prevent bacteria populations from thriving (by starving them). A normal water conditioner makes the water safe for life and allows the bacteria to achieve a full population in line with the available food.

Piranha go Mad for Bloodworm
#shorts A clip from one of my really old videos when I still had my aquatic store.
The Red Piranha always liked feeding time and any kids coming into the shop loved to see them go mad for bloodworm.
Do I miss the shop? Nope, it's much better (and financially beneficial) working from home online and on quiet days I can get into my vegetable gardens or greenhouse, lol
However, I do miss the fish - we had approx. 100 tanks and a great range of species but the increasing costs of operating from a rented place coupled with the nonsense of red tape made it frustrating at times.
When I get asked "Do you think I should set up a shop?" my answer is always "No, unless you do it on your own land" as I've seen so many hobbyists set up shops locally and within a few years leave to work for someone else with nothing but debt to show for their endeavors.

Returning a Lost Gold Ring
#shorts This huge gold ring had been lost for 12 years and I found it after many hours of searching. I was using a Minelab Etrac metal detector.
It was the first gold I'd ever found after years of metal detecting so I was very pleased and it made it even better to find something which had so much sentimental value.
Yes, I did refuse money for finding it but I did accept a bottle of wine for my wife.

Protected Onions Vs Unprotected Onions
This is a follow-up to a #shorts video I made a few days ago showing how well the protected onions are doing towards the end of a North East Winter.
It is now early March.
The onions in the early part of the video which are unprotected were planted in early November and have all sprouted but have been open to the elements and have taken quite a battering.
Compare that to the protected onions in the latter part of the video - they were planted in early December so should have been a month behind the unprotected onions.
However.....the protected onions have clearly done much better through the Winter and are much more advanced. Therefore they will most likely mature faster and provide me with crops before the unprotected onions.
If we had the space I'd grow even more onions - we currently have over 350 planted but considering we use 2-3 onions per day I need to clear some more land specifically for onions. Ideally I could do with half an acre of onions....
The less we buy from supermarkets the healthier we are since here I use no pesticides or herbicides - the vegetable garden here is all organic.
Call me a tin foil hat wearing hippy but I think it's quite important to grow our own food considering that the clowns behind the covaids nonsense are planning to make GMO vegetables containing their MNRA vaxxines and other poisons.
At that point I transform into a pure carnivore and ignore store-bought vegetables all together, lol
Having a fully functional vegetable garden and hens is great since it is so easy to look after and maintain - it's the infrastructure and skills that take the time and cost the effort but it is time and money well spent.
Invest in yourself (and the land) and you won't be poor - skills are the new currency so I want everyone to be skills rich. Learn what you can, when you can.
Check out the other videos on my channel as I cover all sorts of self-sufficiency topics including gardening, bushcraft, fishing, off-grid etc. etc.

Microscopic View of Biohome Ultra
#shorts A 300x view of Biohome Ultra
http://www.filterpro.co.uk
Biohome Ultra is made from different size sand particles and provides a perfect (Natural) home for bacteria to colonize. The variable pore size, tunnels and internal caves are suited to aerobic bacteria (for processing ammonia and nitrite) living near the outer edges and anaerobic bacteria (for processing of nitrate) deeper into the structure.
It basically does the job of a deep sand bed or live rock but in a safe environment with none of the risks.
When ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate is processed it is a full cycle.
Most filters and filter media only allow for half a job which results in high nitrates which have a long term debilitating effect on the fish .

Microscopic View of Alfagrog
#shorts A 300x view of Alfagrog
http://www.filterpro.co.uk
Alfagrog is a very rough knobbly ceramic filter media and is great for traditional koi filters where it sits in muck. As it is so knobbly fine muck will settle into the cavities and eventually support a good mic of bacteria and microorganisms - the less disturbed it is the better it works. It is a cheap way to fill shower filters but really only caters for aerobic activity (reduction in ammonia and nitrite) in that situation due to the lack of porosity and very aerated conditions.
When ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate is processed it is a full cycle.
Most filters and filter media only allow for half a job which results in high nitrates which have a long term debilitating effect on the fish .

Fake Chinese Filter Media
#shorts A 300x view of fake Chinese filter media.
This stuff blights the internet and while it may look good from the outside the story is very different when you take a look INSIDE the filter media ..... which nobody seems to bother doing.
It is made from a ceramic dust which will register a huge surface area but the vast majority of structure is inaccessible for water or bacteria.
Added to that it is extremely soft and breaks down quickly when moved / cleaned. More on that in the full video.
When ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate is processed it is a full cycle.
