#shorts As we have an off grid sewage tank I've taken the opportunity to have the compost bins on top of that. All year it produces heat due to the biological action of the chamber filled with the water and active bacteria ..... sponsored by shizer.

Microscopic View of Biohome Ultimate
#shorts A 300x view of Biohome Ultimate
http://www.filterpro.co.uk
Biohome Ultimate is made from different size sand particles and provides a perfect (Natural) home for bacteria to colonize. The variable pore size, tunnels and internal caves are suited to aerobic bacteria (for processing ammonia and nitrite) living near the outer edges and anaerobic bacteria (for processing of nitrate) deeper into the structure.
It basically does the job of a deep sand bed or live rock but in a safe environment with none of the risks.
When ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate is processed it is a full cycle.
Most filters and filter media only allow for half a job which results in high nitrates which have a long term debilitating effect on the fish .
The eyes don't lie and when you get a zoomed in view of filter media you can make your own decisions......why do no other channels show INSIDE filter media they (are often paid to) promote?
Because "trust the science".
Nope, trust what you see.
Full video here: https://studio.youtube.com/video/QTtAUYR67Eg/edit
A guide to how much media to use for various stocking scenarios to achieve a FULL CYCLE can be found on the Q&A page of the FilterPro site: http://www.filterpro.co.uk as well as lots of other useful information.
Avoid using conditioners which bind / detoxify / remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they prevent bacteria populations from thriving (by starving them). A normal water conditioner makes the water safe for life and allows the bacteria to achieve a full population in line with the available food.

The Ultimate Cold Frame
#shorts This is the cold frame I made in the Christmas 2022 holidays. Everything is pressure treated and then painted with spirit based timber treatment.
It is 10' x 4' x 3' (3m x 1.2m x 1m) and has removable shelves which can be placed at different levels. The glass is from recycled double glazed windows.

Vertical Horizons Hydroponic Tower Update - Feb 2023
http://www.vhhydro.com
Lights in the video: https://geni.us/2vDvyVi
The hydroponics towers from Vertical Horizons are now available in 3 sizes - 1m (for 18 plants), 1.5m (for 30 plants) and 2m (for 45 plants) and the cost is excellent considering the care and detail. They come with everything needed to create a productive vertical garden and everything is food safe, recycled or recyclable.
Hydroponic systems take very little maintenance and produce great yields on a tiny footprint.
In my opinion the incredibly low running costs, high yields and low maintenance make hydroponic systems the method of choice for my leafy veg growing although I have grown micro bush tomatoes and various herbs in them no problem.
As the nutrient requirements can be very different for leafy and fruiting plants I prefer to have separate systems for each type of plants so I can get the nutrients in solution right for the plant - that way they grow faster, mature quickly and yields are always great.
The desktop hydroponic planter I showed in a previous video can be bought from Letpot here: https://letpot.com/

'Hidden' Rain Water Storage for Vegetable Garden ... Plus a Hidden Wildlife Pond ....
Just a quick video to show the 1000 litre (263 US gallon) rain water harvesting system I've installed in the lower vegetable garden.
It is a 1000 litre IBC tank (intermediate bulk container) and there is a secret 250 litre pond underneath it to provide habitat for frogs, toads and newts which will hopefully act as a natural pest control service for the inevitable slugs, caterpillars and snails which are a perennial problem (I don't like to use chemical pest control).
The pond is from Oase and can be found here: https://geni.us/W9XCbq
The price of these ponds has almost doubled in the last 3 years so I'm glad I bought it ages ago while on offer. (I plan well ahead, lol)

Pimp My Filter #81 - Interpet PF2 Internal Filter
Interpet PF filter range: https://geni.us/EK5Kod
At the time of making this video the filter was on offer at £21.95 with free delivery - that is a great deal and even if you don't need a new filter this will make a great back-up for your existing system.
Filter Kits, Foams, Biohome, Biogravel etc: http://www.filterpro.co.uk
(FilterPro site has links to Biohome suppliers in other countries)
Eheim Mech: https://geni.us/lXrB7 (useful for under trays in filters which work bottom to top)
Eheim Substrat Pro: https://geni.us/98euQaB (decent alternative to Biogravel).
This is a well made filter which has a decent amount of space inside and even if you choose not to upgrade the filter it is great value.
*Avoid using water conditioners which claim to bind / remove / detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as it will have a pronounced starving effect on the bacteria. When bacteria is starved the population will be low as it grows in line with the available 'food'.
A normal conditioner will allow the bacteria to fully populate the whole system and take away the 'need' to add more bacteria after maintenance / water change.
Most people get conned into regularly using bacteria additives and that is simply to mask the side effects from a damaging conditioner and a failing filter.
A normal conditioner like Tapsafe, Aquasafe, API Stress Coat etc. is all you need when a tank is properly set up, a filter is suitably sized (and properly set up) and Nature is allowed to so what Nature does.*
See below for notes on how much media is recommended for different stocking scenarios. The Q&A page of the FilterPro site has extensive notes on recommended treatments and how filtration works.

A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Remember to use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity
We all are on a long path of learning.........

Biohome Biorock - A Sustainable Alternative to 'Live Rock'?
Filter Kits, Foams, Biohome, Biogravel etc: http://www.filterpro.co.uk
(FilterPro site has links to Biohome suppliers in other countries)
Eheim Mech: https://geni.us/lXrB7 (useful for under trays in filters which work bottom to top)
Eheim Substrat Pro: https://geni.us/98euQaB (decent alternative to Biogravel).
The Biorock is made from exactly the same materials as the Biohome filter media and has a porosity of approx. 50%.
The structure is perfect for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to colonize so it allows for a full natural cycle to be achieved easily and compared to live rock it comes with none of the risks of bringing parasites / pests into the tank (e.g Bristleworms).
Since it is a manufactured 'rock' it does not contribute to the destruction of natural ocean habitats and actually helps to fund recycling efforts in the UK since the powdered glass used in the mix is from recycling plants.
In a time where the word 'sustainable' has no real meaning and has become associated with fake climate crisis agendas the Biorock offers a truly sustainable way to set up natural structure in any tank without destroying fragile ecosystems in Nature.

Eheim Mech: https://geni.us/lXrB7 (useful for under trays in filters which worlk bottom to top)
Eheim Substrat Pro: https://geni.us/98euQaB (decent alternative to Biogravel).
This is a well made filter which has a surprising lack of space in the trays due to the strange shape of the filter body / trays.
Nevertheless it will easily hold 2kg (4.4 lbs) of Biohome Ultimate making it suitable for a normally stocked tank of up to 200 litres (52 US gallons) or a heavily stocked tank of up to 100 litres (26 US gallons) for a full natural cycle.
Avoid using water conditioners which claim to bind / remove / detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as it will have a pronounced starving effect on the bacteria. When bacteria is starved the population will be low as it grows in line with the available 'food'.

The Ultimate DIY Garden Cold Frame?
This was my Christmas project and the structure is approx. 10' x 4' (3m x 1.2m) with the high side being just over 1m (3'3") and the low side being approx. 0.5m (20").
It is made from a 2" x 2" (50mm x 50mm) frame and is covered by 6" x 5/8" (150mm x 16mm) boards with 2" x 5/8mm (50mm x 16mm) lappers over the board joints. The actual size of the '2" x 2" is nearer 45mm x 45mm as they are dressed (planed).
The cold frame sits on a base made from pressure treated fencing rails which have then been treated with creosote. That keeps the cold frame approx. 1.5" (40mm) above the ground so the main structure is not in contact with wet and dirt which could accelerate the wood rot - this should last for decades.....
All wood inside and out on the cold frame is pressure treated but since pressure treatment isn't what it used to be (I'm planning a 'rant' video on that subject) it was all then treated with a spirit based timber treatment. Avoid water based 'treatments' as they are useless.
The spirit based timber treatment can be found here: https://geni.us/95NKT or on the A-chem website here: https://www.achemshop.co.uk/product/timbashield_dark_oak/
The gas rams I used to enable easy lifting of the lids can be found here: https://geni.us/LsyNSHd
The Stainless steel hinges used on the back of each lid can be found here: https://geni.us/2NWw5F
There are 4 hinges on each lid.
The handles on the lid can be found here: https://geni.us/gBuPQ3
All the screws used are outdoor screws which are zinc coated and are available from any decent DIY store. Same story for the zinc plated bolts used to hold sections together (they are 125mm x 8mm).
The cold frame sits over the overflow from my sewage tank so there is some low level heat being generated underneath it from the bacterial activity - that will help it stay frost free over the Winter.
I'll be covering the bottom of the cold frame with some heavy rubber pond liner as I have a spare piece which should be big enough..
I will do semi-regular garden update videos so subscribe if you want to see more on this project and the garden.
Thanks for watching and check out the gardening playlist on my channel for more videos.

Rodless Reel UFO and Survivor Series Reels - First Look
(This video was first uploaded to the THOUSAND YARD STARE channel)
Rodless Reel Website: https://rodlessreel.com/
Rodless Reel Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/RodlessReel
Catching a big Carp on the UFO reel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0kpjy9aDLA
Thanks to Myles from Rodless Reel for sending these reels to show my viewers.
They are very different from anything currently available from other manufacturers and both of them solve the common problem of missing the reel when retrieving the line.
The Survivor series of reels is made from plastic, is extremely light and is the cheaper of the two reels.
The UFO series of reels (Unidentified Fishing Object) is machined from an anodized Aluminum spool and core with Stainless Steel handle, 35 Ball Bearings.
As we're heading into Winter and my local river is a raging flood I tried to catch fish on my pond but they weren't biting while filming this video - I will keep trying and film it for upload to the THOUSAND YARD STARE channel.
On the RODLESS REEL YouTube channel Myles catches lots of fish on both types of reels.
Thanks for watching.

Biohome Coral ?? What Do YOU Think?
As far as I know this is a truly unique product and I know bugger-all about it as a consequence - it's a random collection of natural shaped, highly porous, effective filter media which you can make your own aquarium structures from.
It has all the benefits of a deep sand bed or live rock but has none of the dangers or drawbacks.
As we know from people using Biohome Bricks and larger forms or the Biohome pellet shaped media (e.g. Maxi Ultimate) in sumps the structure is perfect for corals to colonize. It also can grow masses of Java Fern on it too......now imagine that same structure made into a more attractive form in your tank. Yup, sounds good to me.
Let me know if you'd be interested in this as a product to buy in the video comments section.
Want some now? - If you have a Youtube channel / Instagram / Facebook / Twitter / Tik Tok channel / page or any other CIA / FBI / PRC 'social' media and would be interested in testing this 'Biohome Coral' in your tank to show others then please contact me (Richard) at sales@filterpro.co.uk and I can arrange that for you no problem.
I'd be interested to hear what you think since I'm excited about this after having the time to mess about making different structures which are not only attractive but also functional.

We all are on a long path of learning.........si vis pacem, para bellum.
