In Salt Lake City, Right On Crime hosted a standing room only crowd at our Employer Engagement Forum, The Dollars & Sense of Second Chance Hiring. Employers, community leaders, and policy advocates provided personal and emotional insights to reentry obstacles, economic benefits of hiring the formerly incarcerated, and improvements to public safety. Former U.S. Attorney and ROC Executive Director Brett Tolman spent years sounding the alarm on prosecutorial misconduct and a lack of equality in our nation’s justice system.

“You can’t work in the criminal justice system as a prosecutor, law enforcement or corrections officer- and not have a sense that you want to help make your community safer."

Right On Crime and Prosecutorial Innovation in America Director Kurt Altman sits down with Rob Sanders, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Kentucky’s 16th Judicial Circuit, Kenton County to discuss the benefits of the H.E.A.R.T. program. This innovative and groundbreaking program sees a 92% success rate, meaning only an 8% recidivism rate in drug cases. Sanders says the H.E.A.R.T. program is effective because it saves taxpayers money by freeing up prison space, addressing addiction, and giving people a second chance to avoid prison. Sanders believes being tough on crime is about saving prison cells for violent criminals to keep the community safe, he says “We must draw the line on who we’re afraid of and who we’re mad at versus who we’re just annoyed with.” Learn more by watching the podcast.

Right On Crime opposes Louisiana H.B. 65 which designates simple burglary as a violent offense. “This bill rolls back changes made in 2017, eliminates probation eligibility, and increases the sentence length by 40-60%,” said ROC LA Director Scott Peyton. “Data points to a 30% decrease in property crimes, increased time served for simple burglary, and fewer people being sentenced since the implementation of the 2017 reforms.”
