Cathedral Peak Hike
Draft project for a friend, Kaori Hashimoto, who recently climbed Cathedral Peak with two of her hiking buds, a tough day hike in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. Labels will be added and editing will occur later. This video should be considered a work in progress and will be replaced by the final version in a few weeks.

Colorado Trip, May 2024
Covers a week-long road trip through the mountains of Colorado with my sister Joan and her husband Shannon. Included stops in Steamboat Springs, Rifle, Ouray, Salida, and Colorado Springs. Some snow on a few mountain passes, but only one blockage between Leadville and Frisco, which caused us to divert along the Arkansas River to Colorado Springs. Places visited included Rocky Mountain National Park, Dinosaur National Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and Telluride. Great trip with good food, fantastic mountain sites, lots of elk, and quality time with my sis.

Kanchanaburi, the River Kwai, and Ayutthaya, Thailand
The video covers the second part of the Thailand trip, all away from Bangkok. Includes visits to the chaotic Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, The historic bridge over the River Kwai, a ride on the over-hyped Death Railway, the war cemetery, Kanchanaburi's historic quarter, the ancient city of Ayutthaya, and Wat Yai Cahimongkhol (to see the reclining buddha).

Carter Reunions, old VHS tape covering late 50s to early 90s
I found an old VHS tape that I had converted to digital. The label on the margin said simply "Carter Family Reunions, late 50s to 1991." I was able to edit down the 120 minutes to 46 minutes and may do another cut, because a good deal of the footage was shot under a shelter which presented a lot of backlighting. As a consequence, the images were sometimes little more than silhouettes. Also, the original recordings were obviously copied several times. Still, on the first viewing. I was able to identify several Carters, including my grandfather Milton, father Espie, brother Murell, members of John and Lucy's family, members of Oscar and Charlotte's family, Albert Crockett, and others. If anyone viewing this video can identify additional people, please send me their names and points along the timeline they occur.

Slieve Donard (Sliabh Dónairt) Hike, Northern Ireland
Covers a rainy and foggy hike to the highest point in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, near Newcastle. Newcastle is a nice, attractive small city in the southeastern part of the N.I., on the coast of the Irish Sea. The hike was more interesting than usual because of recent rains which caused the steams to thunder down the mountain next to part of the trail, and made some of the crossings more uncertain than usual.

Northern Ireland, September 2023
Covers three days in and around Newcastle, Northern Ireland, UK, in September 2023. Main reason for this stop was to climb Slieve Donard, the highest point in the country (the subject of a separate video). However, there is lots to see and do in this somewhat "off the beaten path" part of this (SE) corner of that small country. Roads are good, people are friendly and the mountains and coast line are beautiful. We had beautiful weather (except of course for the day I hiked Slieve Donard).

Digitized Super 8 film from 1973
This shows segments from three places visited in 1973, from video shot with a borrowed Super 8 camera. The segments were shot at Barry and Delores's apartment near Cincinnati, at Murell and Faye's house in Boone County, KY, and at our duplex in Champaign, IL. Really old stuff. Could be the only existing video of my mother. Family members will get a kick out of this.

Hike to Errigal (Earagail) Mountain, near Gweedore, Ireland
Short video for a great, relatively easy hike to the highest point in County Donegal, in the Derryveach Mountains, on a bluebird day. This part of Ireland is sparsely populated and off the beaten path for most visitors to Ireland, but not far from the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Fegart Stop, County Donegal, Ireland
Several days at the most northern point in Ireland. The little community was named Fegart, which was several miles from Carndonagh. Beautiful place, stunning coastline as the Wild Atlantic Way winds down, and Malin Head was just 5 miles north. The "80 Eire" sign at Malin Head dates back to WWII to alert allied pilots to Ireland's neutral status during the war. Also, legend has it that it was the first land point that Charles Lindbergh saw when he made his historic transatlantic flight to Europe. We visited the Giant's Causeway in N.I., by taking the ferry over from Greencastle, but N.I. is covered in separate video.

Hike to Croagh Patrick (Cruach Phadraig), near Westport, Ireland
The mountain has its own mystique even without the Saint Patrick Pilgrimage sidebar. According to legend, Saint Patrick fasted in 441 AD for 40 days on top. This short video shows what its like to climb the mountain on a foggy day, and to be greeted with fantastic views of the Clew Bay Islands on the descent.

County Claire, Ireland (with Cliffs of Moher & The Burrens)
Covers 3 days in and around the small community of Tulla in County Claire in early September 2023. The cherry on top of the ice cream for a visit here are the fantastic Cliffs of Moher. They are worth a trip to Ireland all by themselves. But...as we learned, there are cliffs like this all along the Wild Atlantic Way on western coast of the island. It's just that they are more remote and don't have the name recognition. Watch for future videos.

Hike to Carrauntoohil (Corrán Tuathail), Ireland's Highest Mountain, near Killarney
Hike to the highest point in Ireland at 3407 feet on the Devil's Ladder route from MacGillycuddy Reeks trailhead, on a bluebird day. Beautiful hike, but you will encounter some serious scrambling, because some is on wet rocks, along the steep, roughly 1000-foot Devil's Ladder portion.

Mountains, Stone Bridges and Waterfalls of Northern Greece
Great week in a part of Greece that not many visitors get to. Stays were in Ioannina, and Polykarpi, which is about 11 miles south of the border with Macedonia. The true rural Greece. Lots of old Zagori stone bridges (there are more than 80 in the Pindus Mountains), waterfalls (including Edhessa), and the fabulous Vika Gorge.

Dave in the Gunks
Series of clips from Dave of a climbing outing at the Gunks. The Gunks (short for Shawangunks) is one of America's premier climbing areas. It's just minutes from New Paltz, a funky college town of 13,000, and 85 miles from New York City, making it a popular spot on weekends. The rock is solid quartz conglomerate with horizontal, rather than vertical, cracks.

Spying on the Bighorns, 8/18/2023
Short video of clips taken of a herd of Bighorn Sheep on Pusch Ridge, Oro Valley, Arizona on August 18, 2023. Large herd of 10-12, with two full grown rams and one amorous, young ram. Not sure, but some of the young ones may this past winter's crop. Animals appear to be in great shape and were seemingly oblivious to my presence about 100 yards away across the gulch. Magnificent animals. Thanks to my camera zoom, got some pretty close up views. This is my 4th sighting on Pusch Ridge in the past month.

The Peloponnese, Greece, April 2023
Covers 5 days in the southern half of the Peloponnese Peninsula in April 2023, mostly in the areas near Nafplio and Kalamata. Fantastic shoreline and historical sites (namely Mycenae, Epidavros, and Corinth). The Peninsula could technically be called an island since it has be severed from the mainland by the canal at Corinth. This was our second series of stops, after 3 days in Athens (covered in a separate video). April is an excellent time to visit any place in Greece, but try to avoid Easter and the week following Easter. The Greeks do some world class celebrating of Easter. Also, and this is a major heads up, the road from Sparta to Kalamata is currently closed in one area due to a landslide (there is a long, winding detour), but would be nerve racking any time, under the best of conditions.

A Family of Bobcats with 5 Kittens, Saddlebrooke, AZ
Footage of a bobcat family in Saddlebrooke, Arizona, north of Tucson. Family is unusual because of the five kittens. Normal offspring are two or three, and sometimes one. The kittens are a hoot to watch because they are so young and rambunctious, and they don't quite understand what to do with the rabbit brought in by the mother. Note the placid demeanor of the mama amid the antics of the kits.

Changing of the Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Athens Greece
Pulled this footage out of the Athens video recently uploaded. This more complete coverage better describes/shows the sights and sounds of typical maneuvers and guard changing. I've heard, but not verified, that the guards must be 6 feet 4 inches tall to serve in this capacity. Regardless, the ceremony is solemn, impressive, and a very patriotic display for the country of Greece. You could have heard a pin drop during the entire changing ceremony.
