Headgear? Brain Damage? Really?
My answer to the opinion that wearing headgear is not a good idea.
I've received some flack regarding my old-school sense of humor. To those who "feel" that it is inappropriate. I can only say, that you must have me confused with someone who could care about your feelings. You have an inflated opinion of your own importance that I obviously don't share!
As the video points out, the benefits of wearing head protection far outweigh the drawbacks.
Filmed in Kfar Adumim, Israel in our new but not completed dojo with myself and Yehoshua Kadosh, my senior student who is an 8th Dan, Kyoshi, with a Daishihan Menjo (Master Instructor's Teaching License) filming.

Kids' Techniques. Not the Same as for Adults.
We do not teach kids the adult versions of our defensive techniques. That would be highly irresponsible of us. We only put those on our Patreon section to not upset YouTube.
This technique is the first one we teach them as it contains most of our core principles. Protect, disrupt his mental game plan, and strike in one movement while controlling your distancing and angle of attack.
Minimizing the damage inflicted to mitigate the blowback that will result from your child defending himself is another item we try to build into the movements for children.

How to Properly Use a Makiwara (Machiwara)
First I want to apologize for the wind. That is why we are building our dojo. So we won't have all the noise pollution the other sites are afflicted with.
Now that you have built your Proper Makiwara (see: How to Construct a Proper Makiwara (Machiwara)), you can see how to USE your Makiwara Properly. Machiwara is the way the Okinawan language pronounces Makiwara.
My way. But. Every principle. Every idea came from Master Shigeru Nakamura and his student Master Seiyu Oyata. If not for them, I would be less. Again, the original posted seven years ago had over 5,000 views.
The purpose of training with the Makiwara never was to beat it until you developed calloused or monstrous foreknuckles. The purpose has always been to develop proper skeletal alignment and muscle movement enabling maximum effectiveness of your strike. To prevent damage the Machiwara needs to have one inch of give, but not more than one and a half to two inches so the effects you want to happen, do. The ugly deformities that improper training creates not only lead to problems in later life but scream out to adversaries that you are a trained person who should be blindsided and ambushed unawares to assure your defeat. Too much give and the proper alignment will not be created. The effect would be tantamount to hitting a bag. A really stiff one, but still a bag!
Yehoshua Kadosh was behind the camera. Without him, y'all would not be seeing much of anything.

Ruminations on my time with Master Seiyu Oyata
The way he trained me. The stories (not all of them) he told me about his life during and after WW2. Why we bonded so closely. The political jealousies in the organization forced us apart. And, what occurred after our separation.
Don't be gutless wimps! Click if you like or found this video to be informative. If not, tell us why. If you were not there at the time that we were talking, don't try to BS anyone with "opinions". I'll call you out for what you are!

We are Building a New Outdoor Dojo. Phase 1 is Complete. Phase 2 Coming up!
Took long enough but, we finally got it leveled out, kicking posts put in, the barrier that prevents grass and other things from growing up through our artificial grass, and lastly, the artificial grass that allows us to teach without mud or dust interfering with our teaching. Now we can work the Bo Kata and other things that can only be taught in an open area. We tend to teach in small groups and private lessons like the Masters of old did before the sportification of the arts took place (and ruined it!).
Now, the usual pontifications:

1983 Independence Tournament (Real Bogu)
This is what Bogu Kumite used to look like in 1983-4. We still have point bogu but that is reserved for those who can't migrate to the newer more violent version. The crowd noises were so extreme (screaming, yelling, etc.) that it was decided to mute them. When I learn how to add voice-overs I will start doing so. Until then ---
Do not think Bogu Kumite is how you would defend yourself against asocial violence. Those events are not competitions and require a totally different form of violent responses that result in death, crippling, or maiming of the opponent.

Bogu Demo and Defensive Clips
Okay! The Bogu was filmed in our Jerusalem Dojo as were the Demo clips. The kids (everyone has signed permission to film in their contracts) at our secondary Dojo in Jerusalem and at Gan Sacher in Jerusalem. Yoshi and his brother-in-law at various places in Kfar Adumim. The "self-defense" techniques are designed to catch the attention and are NOT our taught asocial techniques. Yoshi and David Showing Proper Bogu Kumite Practice
Training needs not to be anywhere near as vigorous as actual competition. Training TOO hard can be detrimental to your health and progress in learning. It should be an experience that is non-threatening and can be fun if done with a partner who is of the same mindset. David and Yoshi, even though the day is blistering hot, are having a good time improving their skills. I will show some videos of students training, and then I have one of what Tournament Championship matches at the Gold (Expert) level are like and another of the lower levels' competition. Do not think Bogu Kumite is how you would defend yourself against asocial violence. Those events are not competitions and require a totally different form of violent responses that result in death, crippling, or maiming of the opponent. Yoshi and David seem to have gotten carried away a bit right before the Second round but they calmed down and took a short break before resuming.

Basically, this was done to add a few more details to help our overseas students better understand the intricacies and possibilities contained in this kata.
Truthfully, I'm not known for my kata performance. I'm known for my fighting and Self-Defence Tactics and Techniques which my Military background shows.

Ryukyu Kenpo's Exercise 2
Exercise Two has been requested, also. This is not something Master Oyata taught me. I created it, along with Exercises 3 and 4, to give my students practice drills that are important to internalize for their future capabilities. The Daily Dozen and Guerrilla Exercises are courtesy of my 12 years in the US Army. You may note that I'm kind of flat-footed at times. This is due to my age, and you should understand that I should be more on the balls of my feet.

Ryukyu Kenpo's Exercise One
London requested that I do a video of our Exercise One. It has been slightly modified from what Master Oyata taught me. But, then again, he expected me to do this in the future. He explained that tradition is fine, but that was then and this is now. Don't change what works, but don't keep what no longer does.

Master Odo's Wansu
While Wansu isn't one of the twelve kata designated by Master Nakamura for competition in his organization, Wansu, as taught to us by Master Butch Spain, is a nice little kata of Master Odo that people who enjoy performing kata will want to learn.
Again, it is performed by my senior student, Yehoshua Kadosh in Kfar Adumim, Israel with myself checking to make sure it is done correctly.

Kempo vs Kenpo
What's the fuss? Nothing much. When you look up Kempo in the Japanese/English dictionary you find "Server Error". If you spell it Kenpo this is what you get: "kenpou (kanji info) 拳法 (n) (1) Chinese martial arts; kung fu; wushu; quanfa; (n) (2) kenpo (martial arts); kempo" It does list kempo at the end as a variant spelling which it did not a few years ago. I guess you could call that progress for kempo! Realistically, KeMpo vs KeNpo means nothing. It's not going to change what you do!

Master Oyata's ORIGINAL Pinan Shodan.
The first of the Pinan kata. The Pinan (平安) kata are a series of five empty hand forms taught in many karate styles. The Pinan kata originated in Okinawa and were adapted by Anko Itosu from older kata such as Kusanku into forms suitable for teaching karate to young students. Pinan is the Chinese Pinyin notation of 平安.
This is the way we were taught by Master Seiyu Oyata.

Master Oyata's ORIGINAL Bo Kihon Kata.
This is the first Bo Kata that we teach. It is the first Bo Kata that I learned. We used to have little 'get-togethers' in my parent's backyard, and Greg Lindquist taught me Master Oyata's Bo Kihon, the first Bo Kata that they taught. Later Master Oyata refined my understanding of this kata and how I was to implement its movements in preparation to compete in the Weapons Fighting Division in Okinawa. I declined the 'honor' when it was pointed out to me the deaths and injuries incurred during these full contact "competitions".

Master Oyata's ORIGINAL Seisan kata in Memory of Kiril Hinkov
As the title says, this video is dedicated to the memory of Kiril Hinkov. Kiril was from Sophia, Bulgaria, and ran his dojo Kyokuten. Kiril passed on Christmas day 2020 from Covid.
Master Nakamura's Kata was taught to him by Kuniyoshi, Shinkichi in Nago, Okinawa. He in turn taught it to my teachers Oyata, Seiyu, and Odo, Seikichi. It was originally called Seisan. Tomari was added later after 1987.
The kata is done correctly with the hands in the proper positions. Note that in the beginning three movements after the punch is delivered the punching arm is slowly withdrawn to the lead arm's elbow. The punching arm is swiftly withdrawn to the "chamber" position before the punch is delivered. To do otherwise is incorrect!
Done in Kfar Adumim, Israel by Yehoshua Kadosh, 8th Dan, Kyoshi, with a Daishihan Menjo (Master Instructor's Teaching License).

Talking About the Bo (Quarterstaff) used in Ryukyu Kobujutsu
The Bo is much more than what most people think it is. It is a training device for many of the pole-arms used in past warfare. These movements appear in many of the more advanced forms (kata). This is information for those who are serious about their art and its history. The person in the caption photo is my son David.

Master Oyata's ORIGINAL Naihanchi Shodan.
The first kata we teach. It's at Master Shigeru Nakamura's insistence. Done slowly and precisely the first half with explanations. 100% correct. Narrow stance just like Choki Motobu demonstrated. Truthfully, I'm not known for my kata performance. I'm known for my fighting and asocial violence prevention tactics and techniques. This is where my Military background shows.
Done in Kfar Adumim, Israel with myself and Yehoshua Kadosh, my senior student who is an 8th Dan, Kyoshi, with a Daishihan Menjo (Master Instructor's Teaching License).

Karate. The way it was meant to be taught. Not Sport. Learn from a Military Science and Tactics instructor specializing in Individual Tactical Training. There is a difference. We do Seminars worldwide. The details are on our website www.academy-of-ryukyu-kenpo.info. I enjoy teaching people who WANT to learn! With Albert Geraldi's passing, there is only Greg Lindquist and I left from the original bunch. Greg is more of a Kata guy, I'm the fighter and tactics guy. I don't teach that namby-pamby stuff that's passing itself off as Ryukyu Kempo these days.

Ruminations on my time with Ryukyu Kempo's Master Seiyu Oyata
The way he trained me. The stories (not all of them) he told me about his life during and after WW2. Why we bonded so closely. The political jealousies in the organization that forced us apart. And, what occurred after our separation.

Master Oyata's ORIGINAL Chizikunbo Kata.
We discussed the Chizikunbo. Now, we present our Chizikunbo kata.
Done in Kfar Adumim, Israel with myself and Yehoshua Kadosh, who is an 8th Dan, Kyoshi, with a Daishihan Menjo (Master Instructor's Teaching License).

Chizikunbo: What are they? Why would you want them?
The Chizikunbo - what they are, their advantages, and why you should have a pair. Admittedly a .45 automatic is a tad superior!
This is the kata I learned directly from Seiyu Oyata in private instruction while I was his fourth-highest ranking student and very first "transfer" student from another system.
