Does Modernity Kill Art? | Nietzsche Roulette #11
Our modern society is a totally different place from the one that artists we still idolize lived in, so how does modernity affect today's artists?
Can atheists make good art or do artists need some relationship with divinity to create inspiring art?
When it feels like so much mainstream art is tepid and ugly, what is really the purpose of art today?
â—¬ Featured quote:
"125. Irreligiousity of Artists.
Homer is so much at home among his gods, and as a poet takes such pleasure in them, that he, at any rate, must have been profoundly unreligious.
With that with which popular belief presented him - a paltry, crude, and in part horrible superstition - he trafficked as freely as a sculptor with his clay, that is to say, with the same ease and impartiality as that possessed by Aeschylus and Aristophanes, and which in more recent times, distinguishes the great artists of the Renaissance, as it does Shakespeare and Goethe."

Feminists Hate Her!!! | Nietzsche Roulette #07
Women are perfect and never have nor can they ever do anything wrong. Nothing to see here!
This is a total non-episode on the absolute 0 vices of feminity as considered through a Nietzschean lens. There's simply no way that, when women have never had more systemic and cultural power, they might have just a bit of sway on society.
Additionally, since women are eternally flawless and blameless, that sway could never cause some negative phenomena in our culture...
â—¬ Featured quote:
"An Element of Love.
In every kind of womanly love, there also appears something of motherly love."
â—¬ In this episode:
â‹— Is women's relational strength also their weakness?
â‹— A society where masculinity is demonized is a society that doesn't value its own protection
â‹— Modern feminism is now harming women more than helping them
â‹— War is feminist now

Modern Vengeance? What No One Understands About The Northman
What does vengeance mean to you? Some concepts fade out of culture, but that doesn't mean the impulse doesn't still exist within us.
The Northman brings the pursuit of vengeance to modern audiences, possibly being a reason some critics found the movie offensive.
But perhaps more offensive is a society that doesn't understand its history nor itself.
â—¬ In this episode:
â‹— Word of the podcast: Wergeld
â‹— The difference between Christian & pre-Christian cultures
â‹— The flaws in the political criticism of The Northman

Understanding Art Censorship Today: Jihad Rehab | Peasant Radio #02
Censorship is a growing problem because the ethos that entitles one person to believe they hold more right to make decisions for other adults is a problem.
A rather uncontroversial film became highly controversial when a group of unknown filmmakers made that exact decision: that you shouldn't be able to watch or consider films that they dislike.
But you know the increasingly common cancel culture story, so let's take this conversation deeper for once. Where does this growing culture of control take us and what really needs to happen to avoid it?
â—¬ In this episode:
â‹— What is this blacklisted documentary about?
â‹— The tired pattern of Mad Libs-style outraged accusations
â‹— How the ideology of intersectionality inevitable destroys all systems
â‹— Why the incremental approach to defending free expression will fail
â‹— How censoring art always leads to authoritarianism
â‹— Power-hungry people often hide their true motives behind virtue
â‹— Does the art world need to get worse before it gets better?
â—¬ Sick of censorship too? Share this episode and let Sundance and SXSW know you prefer to make your own decisions about art as an autonomous adult. Even better, call for Meg Smaker's film to be rightly screened and let adults decide for themselves whether it's offensive.

How Art Changes You + the Goth-verse | Nietzsche Roulette #02
Do video games cause violence? Did Nirvana cause nihilism? The influence art has on us is a much older debate than media scaremongering and concerned parents.
Did Nietzsche predict the goth subculture? In this episode, you'll be armed with new ways to diss bad art.
Let us know how you interpret Nietzsche's quote in the comments!
â—¬ Featured quote:
"Old doubts over the effect of art.
Are fear and pity really discharged by tragedy, as Aristotle has it, so that the auditor goes home colder and more placid? Do ghost stories make one less fearful and superstitious?
It is true in the case of certain physical events, the enjoyment of love, for example, that with the satisfaction of a need, an alleviation and temporary relaxation of the drive occurs. But fear and pity are not in the sense needed of definite organs which want to be relieved. In the long run, a drive is, through practice and satisfying it, intensified; its periodical alleviation notwithstanding. It is possible that in each individual instance fear and pity are mitigated and discharged, they could nonetheless grow greater as a whole through the tragic effect in general. And Plato could still be right when he says that through tragedy one becomes generally more fearful and emotional.
The tragic poet himself would then necessarily acquire a gloomy, disheartened view of the world, and a soft, susceptible, fearful soul. And it would likewise accord with Plato's opinion of the matter, if the tragic poet and with him whole city communities, which take a special delight in him, should degenerate to ever greater unbridledness and immoderation.
But what right has our age to offer an answer to Plato's great question concerning the moral influence of art at all? Even if we possessed art, what influence of any kind does art exercise among us?"
â—¬ In this episode:
â‹— Why do we enjoy scary movies?
â‹— How art might influence us in powerful ways
â‹— Are we becoming progressively desensitized?
â‹— Did Nietzsche predict the goth subculture?

Why Alchemy is Still Important (Really) | Library Circus #15
You know of alchemy, but do you know alchemy? Our modern mindset has led us astray in understanding what past societies sought in their seemingly silly practices, at least that's what Jung believes about alchemy.

â—¬ In this episode:
â‹— Word of the podcast: Alexipharmic
â‹— How Skyrim is wrong about alchemy
â‹— Why Jung believes most people misunderstood alchemy
