NT Framework 34, Jewish and Gentile Responses to the Cross continued
SBC Family,
Tomorrow we will use the same handout from last week. Now that we’ve discussed the principles of response to the word of God, now we will look at how Jews and Gentiles responded to the Christ and cross. Should be very fun and interesting. Then we will be set to study the extent of the atonement (for whom did Christ die?).
Love,
Jeremy

1 Corinthians 11, Imitating Paul and Warning Against Arrogance, 1 Cor 4:14-21, and Membership App.
SBC Family,
I'm attaching a membership application. Some of you who regularly attend have never become formal members. This is not required, though this email is timely because the business meeting will take place in February and congregational voting does require formal membership (local members only). Again, no pressure. Church membership can be a controversial topic since it is unclear from Scripture whether the early church had membership. Even if it is described it is not prescribed, so it is not required to be obedient to the NT. However, we need to have some parameters for those who vote on matters of the church's interest.
Tonight's lesson will finish the first report from those out of Chloe's house. It's really a challenging section to work through. The report was that the Corinthians had divided into factions. Paul traced bad behavior back to the Corinthian's outlook on life that manifested itself in an arrogant attitude. His corrective was theological. They needed a proper outlook on the word of the cross and the work of the Spirit.
The fix for all of our bad behavior can be traced back to poor theology, even if it's a misplaced emphasis. We learn a lot from Paul here. Rooting out the problem in our theology can take years. Stay the course. Be patient. He is at work as we stay in His word and request understanding.
Grace to you,
Jeremy

NT Framework 33 Jewish and Gentile Responses to the Cross
SBC Family,
Tomorrow we'll keep studying the cross, this time from the standpoint of what Christ accomplished and how Jews and Gentiles responded and why. The word never returns void. There is always a positive and negative response. The main response is negative. Why? That will be the subject of our inquiry. See the attached outline.
Love and blessings,
Jeremy

1 Corinthians 10 How to Think About God's Servants and the World's Evaluation of Them 4:1-13
SBC Family,
Paul continues to address the first report from those of Chloe's house; the factions present at Corinth that demonstrated they were still carnal. Paul is not just wanting them to "get back in fellowship." That is over-individualizing the passage. He wants them to adopt his viewpoint on the cross and the Spirit. They can not become truly spiritual with any other viewpoint. Their arrogance was a hindrance. They did not realize the preeminence of Christ and Him crucified and the magnanimity of the gift of the Spirit who can produce true spirituality when we listen to His word no matter the servant.
See the attached verse-by-verse notes.
Grace to you,
Jeremy

NT Framework 32 The Messiah's Unique Death on the Cross
SBC Family Near and Far,
We'll be looking at four unique aspects of the Messiah's death on the cross tomorrow. There is almost unlimited amount of interesting information about the cross. The cross is the unique focus of the NT. More than 25% of the gospels focuses on the event of the cross. The one thing Christ told us to remember was not His birth or life, but His death. He left us two ordinances that both focus on the cross; the Lord's Supper in which we remember His death on the cross and Believer's Baptism in which we are baptized by the Spirit into His death. Be prepared to appreciate what He's done for us on the cross, and the unique place of the cross in history which has influenced more people than any other single idea in the history of the world.

Jeremy

1 Corinthians 09 Each Man's Contribution to the Local Church 3:10-23
SBC Family,
This is an interesting passage in context. The passage is usually taught to be about how we live our lives and resulting reward. That is a good application of the passage, but it is not the interpretation of the passage. The interpretation is narrower and deals with the source of wisdom each believer uses to contribute to the local church and how it relates to his reward. The passage contains perhaps the strongest warning against introducing human methods, philosophies, teachings, etc... into the local church which is a dwelling of the Spirit.
See the attached handout/commentary.

NT Framework 30 The Nature of Justice
SBC Family,
To understand the cross one must first understand justice, because the cross is the preeminent picture of justice. Few people have this view of justice today. Literally not 1 in 10,000 people would cite the cross as an example of justice if they were asked. This is because the world has very different ideas of justice than God.
We are moving on to the Death of the King tomorrow, but to do so we have to do a lot of background work. Tomorrow we will work on justice. The reason we are doing this is so that we have a new appreciation for the cross, for it is indeed central to the NT and to the history of the universe.
See the attached notes. I had trouble piecing this one together, but hopefully it will come off well.
Grace to you,
Jeremy

1 Corinthians 08 Three Types of Men 2:14-3:9
SBC Family,
Tonight we'll work through the three types of men. Some think there are four types of men, and I used to teach that, but closer inspection leads me to conclude that there are only three types of men in this passage. This is a more realistic position; natural men, spiritual men, and carnal men. The important thing to grasp is that we should all be spiritual and learning advanced teaching and practices. The Corinthians were in trouble for being carnal after five years, and the audience of Hebrews were in trouble for falling back into carnality. So it's possible to fall back if you don't apply the things you have learned. There is a lot more about behavior (what we do with the truth) than I imagined in this section. It's not so much about learning as it is about applying what we've already learned. When we fail to do that we can't go forward in our learning. We can even get to the point we may not be able to make further progress. Hebrews 6 is talking about this. It's a very applicable.
See the attached notes.

Jeremy

NT Framework 29 Doctrine of Infallibility Applied
SBC Family,
We're going to press on with the doctrine of infallibility. This is a doctrine that is distinct from inspiration and inerrancy, but it is closely related. Infallibility is the issue of whether Jesus and the prophets and apostles might have committed technical errors when recording or stating details of history and science. There are many evangelicals today who willingly accept that Jesus did commit these types of errors, though in the area of faith and morals He never erred. We'll pick up our discussion by looking back at how this happened. It's a long story, but we'll just look at a few stepping stones along the way. We'll look at the Chicago statement on Inerrancy from 1978, and I'll share a story from a fellow congregant who encountered this issue while attending seminary around 1980. This is why we have such division in evangelicalism today over the issue of young earth creationism and pagan cosmic evolution.
See the handout. We will focus on pp 4-6.

Jeremy

1 Corinthians 07 The Illuminating Work of the Holy Spirit
SBC Family,
I'm tired! I want a break! I'm ready for Christmas! But here we are in 1 Corinthians 2. This is one of my favorite sections of Scripture. There are interesting things here that I've worked on for years. I still have to think through the applications. I hope it is a benefit to you. See the attachment.
I finally polished up another book that's going to be published on January 1, 2024. I'm really pleased with this one. It covers a lot of Bible prophecy.

NT Framework 28 Doctrine of Infallibility
SBC Family,
This is a really important lesson. This will explain why Christianity is so screwed up today on evolution, geology, and other scientific issues. It's a lot of information, so I doubt we'll get through it all, but the issue of infallibility is a key issue! It's one of the most important in the world, and if you understand it, it will change your life and thinking forever.
Grace to you,
Jeremy

1 Corinthians 06 The Contrast of the Cross and Human Wisdom 1:18-31
SBC Family,
The first problem at Corinth was party divisions, but they were rooted in a much deeper problem; their failure to appreciate the word of the cross and consequent exaltation of human wisdom displayed by clever speech. Someone can be a great orator but the content has absolutely no value before God. In fact, God will destroy it. It is nothing. God uses a very distasteful message to bring people to Himself. It is this message that has His power. For some reason this message appealed to you and me, and now it should be of greatest importance. There are not many of us who were called who were members of Mensa, not many who were Senators or Congressman, not many who are millionaires, but this is in step with God's doings so that He gets all the glory and all our boasting is in Him.
I will see you tonight because this same message of the power of the gospel is not just so we get saved from the penalty of sin and go to heaven, but also to continue to be saved from the power of sin and overcome difficulties by enjoying rest.
See the attachment.
Grace to you,
Jeremy
