Hi everyone! I was invited to take part in a video for National Feeding tube awareness week in February 2020 by a very nice youtuber named My Asterisk Life/or Hannah and I wanted to help. So my name is Mike. I'm 41 and I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The type of feeding tube I use is called a G-Tube. I received my first one back in 2014 because my illness began affecting my swallowing muscles and it was becoming difficult to eat. My feeding tube has helped me by giving me the nutrition I need to stay alive and healthy. Before I received the G-Tube I only weighed 70 lbs and I was admitted to the hospital because my body began shutting down and I had pneumonia due to lack of good nutrition. I now weigh around 145 lbs and I'm much healthier and happier. I'm so happy that I got the G-Tube. I got a message on Facebook one day in 2019 from Gemma, who was a physiotherapy student at the University of Canberra in Australia. She was doing a presentation on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and discovered my challenge on Facebook. She asked me some questions about living with DMD and I did this quick video for her and the students of me answering them. Several of the students including Gemma were all happy to volunteer to do the challenge and send me their videos for me to upload to my YouTube. The challenge of putting your feet into shaving cream is something I need to explain. I get many people who like to assume shit about why I'm doing it. I get people saying it's stupid and silly and why do that instead of just donating. Ten I get the people who are sarcastic like "wow that's a hard challenge" Well it's not supposed to be hard... it's supposed to be inclusive and fun way to raise awareness. Then I get the assholes who claim I'm doing it for foot fetish reasons(not just on YouTube either), which to me is very insulting. It's never even crossed my mind. Again, this is supposed to be something fun yet simple that everyone can do, including children and adults of all ages, disabled or not. I will not change it just for a fraction of trolls. There are any more troll comments I get. I will not engage with you and your comment will be removed... Just don't want you wasting any energy typing something that makes you look like an ass. It's similar in idea to the ALS ice bucket challenge. But I made it something anyone could do, including people who are in wheelchairs or live with other physical disabilities. Many of us weren't able to do the Ice Bucket challenge because of the equipment we use(i.e. Ventilators, Tracheostomies, power chairs, etc.) and also many of us have sensitivity to extreme temperatures and can easily get sick. So I made the challenge something that could be done that would be away from people's faces and less likely to damage anything. Hi everyone!. So I wanted to make this video to talk about what Muscular Dystrophy is in a little more detail and its about time I did lol. I've been doing this awareness challenge since 2014 and have yet to do a video explaining exactly what the illness is that I'm raising awareness for. What is it? Muscular Dystrophy is not just one illness its actually group of genetic neuromuscular diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. In Muscular Dystrophies, abnormal genes (or mutations) lead to muscle degeneration. Most forms begin in childhood. It is a rare illness there are fewer than 200,000 cases in the US per year. Treatment can help, but the condition currently cannot be cured. Lab tests or imaging are required to make a medical diagnosis. There are around 40 types of Muscular Dystrophy, some are more severe than others. The most common type and the most severe is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, it begins at birth and mostly occurs in boys with rare cases recorded in girls. It is usually terminal. What are the symptoms? Damaged muscles become progressively weaker. Most people who have the condition will eventually need a wheelchair. Other symptoms include trouble breathing or swallowing. People may also experience pain in the muscles, abnormality walking, muscle weakness, loss of muscle, or permanent shortening of tendons, and in some cases, delayed development or learning disabilities. Also common are cardiomyopathy, walking on tip toes, constipation, fatigue, and scoliosis. Lifespan is often shortened by the disease. What are the treatments? Treatments can consists of steroids, medications, physical therapy, breathing aids(such as C-Pap machines and ventilators, or surgery may help maintain function. Proper treatment of the disease can increase the lifespan of those living with this illness and improve quality of life.
