Train Derailment In Alabama, USA
A Norfolk Southern train derailed Thursday in Calhoun County, Alabama, hours before company CEO Alan Shaw faced lawmakers to answer questions about a Feb. 3 derailment that led to a toxic chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio.
The train was traveling from Atlanta to Meridian, Mississippi, when it derailed at around 6:45 a.m. in the Quad Cities area of White Plains, officials said.
There were no reports of injuries and no reports of a hazardous leak after approximately 30 cars derailed, the Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency said in a news release.
"Norfolk Southern has responded and is working closely with us," an agency spokesperson said in a statement. "Norfolk Southern has their cleanup crew on site and there is no estimation on how long it will take."

It’s not clear what caused the derailment.

What AI Means for Alzheimer's Care
Nicole Werner is an associate professor in the Indiana University School of Public Health.
Werner claims caregivers of people living with dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease have a challenging role, and they are not well supported. This is associated with negative health outcomes for the caregiver and for the person living with dementia. One of the big challenges caregivers face is that caring for a person with dementia happens over a long period of time, sometimes upwards of ten years or more as the disease progresses. What that means is that the needs of the person with dementia and the role of the caregiver will change considerably as the disease takes its course.
Her lab is creating user centered technologies for family caregivers of people with dementia that get them the help they need when they need it. To do that, Werner’s lab has partnered with Care Virtue. They are designing multiple technologies that use AI innovations. Examples include personalized support for financial and legal planning, an AI enabled platform used to activate the caregiving network around the person living with dementia, and AI tools to predict when a caregiver needs an intervention so they can get the help they need when they need it.
Werner believes AI enabled care interventions are the future. As of yet the needs of caregivers have not been met in a holistic way, which has led to persistent and pervasive unmet needs and challenges for caregivers. AI and the ability to predict and meet those needs over an extended period of time is the future of helping caregivers.

Daisy Jones and the Six' limited series
Amazon has released a trailer for the upcoming limited-series "Daisy Jones and the Six," starring Riley Keough and Sam Claflin.
Based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the series is set in the drugs and rock 'n' roll culture of the 1970s, the story begins with an LA "it girl" named Daisy Jones (Keough) whose looks get her into all the hot spots.
She falls into music but with her singing voice and a gift for songwriting, she actually belongs there.
Then there's a band called The Six whose lead singer Billy Dunne (Claflin) is the definition of a rock star: moody, arrogant, and handsome.
Through a series of events, the two acts come together and form Daisy Jones and The Six. The group skyrockets with critical and popular acclaim, hit songs, and a sold-out tour, until they suddenly, inexplicably break up.
Now, all those involved, from the band members to their friends and loved ones, look back and share their version of events in the first person.
"Daisy Jones and the Six," also starring Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse, debuts March 3 on Prime Video.

Why Shipping Ohio Derailment Waste is Dangerous
Marc Lame is a clinical professor emeritus in the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He teaches environmental management.
Lame claims the reason why Norfolk Southern Railway can ship hazardous waste from the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment across state lines is because of the Interstate Commerce Clause. This clause allows companies to ship waste to other states without the consent of the state. There are only so many certified hazardous waste facilities where that type of waste can be disposed of in the United States. Companies need to pick one, and they usually pick hazardous waste facilities nearby, though this is not always the case. It depends on what types of waste different facilities are able to take. It’s also an economic consideration for the company that must pay for it. The railroads need to find a facility that they feel is most affordable to them. The EPA has gotten more involved in the case of the East Palestine, Ohio derailment, which allows them to also dictate where the waste goes.
He says from a scientific point of view, it is important to immediately look at the certifications in place for facilities that accept hazardous waste to ensure they are being monitored and operating under their permit. If everything with these facilities is working properly, the facilities meet regulatory standards, and the hazardous waste safely makes it to the facility it is supposed to go to, then there should not be much real danger to communities in the short term. Issues could potentially arise however in the long term. The facilities may not leak now, but it can be hard to say what will happen to these facilities, the waste they hold, and the surrounding environment in the decades to come. Currently, it is difficult to say how sustainable these facilities will end up being in the long term. Lame encourages everyone to remember that science changes overtime. As such, the understanding of the impact this waste will have on surrounding communities could change with further research.
Lame states in order to keep the communities receiving hazardous waste safe, the first thing communities and states need to do is keep people informed on what is going on. In this case, because of the clause that allows interstate commerce to occur, this waste is seen as nothing more than a business transaction. Thus, states and communities are not informed when hazardous waste is brought into their community for disposal. People need to be kept aware on what is happening in their communities. Each state also needs to give its environmental agency the resources necessary to make sure hazardous waste facilities are operating correctly. If these facilities are not operating as they should, then serious problems could occur. As long as states cut budgets to their environmental agencies, it will be more difficult to ensure hazardous waste is being disposed of safely. States need to choose the health of humans and the environment over short term profits. It was the rollback of regulations which allowed the East Palestine, Ohio derailment to happen in the first place. Further deregulation and cuts to environmental agencies will only make things worse.
Interview Questions:
1. Why are hazardous soil and liquids from the East Palestine, Ohio derailment being sent to other communities like in Indiana?
2. How can communities and their environments be impacted by the introduction of these hazardous materials?
3. What needs to be done to ensure the safety of the communities where these hazardous materials are being shipped?

UAE astronaut still adjusting to life in space
The second astronaut from the United Arab Emirates is still adjusting to life off the planet, after rocketing to the International Space Station last week.
“I’m still coping. I’m still learning,” Sultan al-Neyadi said Tuesday, but added that he hopes to improve in the coming days.
He's the second UAE astronaut to fly in space and the first from the Arab world to be assigned to a long spaceflight _ the others stayed for about a week. He'll be up there until September.
Al-Neyadi assured Dubai's ruler in a video call Tuesday that he and the rest of his crew are in good health. But he joked that the small plush astronaut toy that he took up may be coping better with microgravity than he is.
“I am thankful to God you have reached the International Space Station,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as the country's prime minister and vice president, said from the space center named after him.
SpaceX launched al-Neyadi, a Russian cosmonaut and two NASA astronauts on their six-month mission last Thursday.
The first UAE astronaut, Hazzaa al-Mansoori took part in Tuesday's brief video chat from Dubai. Al-Neyadi's astronaut toy, nicknamed Suhail, Arabic for the brilliant star Canopus, also accompanied al-Mansoori on his 2019 space station mission.
“Hopefully, people will follow in the footstep of my brother Hazzaa and my footsteps,” al-Neyadi said, the flags for the UAE and its space center hanging behind him. “This is what we hope for.”

Two Americans killed in Mexico, others found alive
Two Americans whose abduction in Mexico was captured in a video that showed them caught in a cartel shootout were found dead, officials said Tuesday.
Two others who were kidnapped with them were found alive, with one wounded.
Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal did not provide details on the extent of the wounded person’s injuries.
The surviving Americans were taken to the border near Brownsville, Texas, in a convoy of Mexican ambulances and SUVs, as seen by an Associated Press journalist.
It was not immediately clear if the bodies of the deceased were also being returned to the U.S.
The vehicles sped down a long dirt road escorted by Mexican military Humvees, armored vehicles, state police and National Guard in trucks with mounted .50-caliber machine guns.
A relative of the Americans on Monday that the group had traveled together from South Carolina so one of them could get a tummy tuck from a doctor in the border city of Matamoros, where Friday’s kidnapping took place.
Shortly after entering Mexico they were caught amid fighting between rival cartel groups in the city.
A video showed them being loaded into the back of a pickup truck by gunmen.
Officials said a Mexican woman also died in Friday's crossfire.
