Umar Ata Bandial: A Legacy Of Controversies | TLDR | USNEWS2
Umar Ata Bandial, who retired as Pakistan's 28th chief justice after a 20-month tenure, is seen as one of the most polarizing top judges in the country's history.
His time in office began during a political crisis as joint opposition sought to oust a minority government.
Bandial's first major challenge was declaring the deputy speaker's decision to dissolve parliament as unconstitutional, leading to the restoration of the National Assembly and setting the stage for the removal of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
His tenure was marked by a flood of contentious petitions, making him a divisive figure.
Critics accused him of favoring Imran Khan's party, leading to demands for his resignation and even attempts to curb the chief justice's powers through legislation.
Bandial's actions further divided the Supreme Court, as he formed benches that aligned with him and marginalized dissenting judges, while avoiding full benches for important political cases.

Death toll in devastating Libya floods spikes to 5,200
The interior ministry of eastern Libya’s administration says the death toll has risen to at least 5,200 people, particularly in the city of Derna.
Aid agencies have so far provided lower figures but warn the number of victims could sharply rise as thousands remain unaccounted.
The United Nations says emergency teams are being mobilised to help on the ground in the politically divided country.
Red Cross official Tamer Ramadan says about 10,000 people are missing after the floods.
He warns the death toll is “huge” and expected to rise by thousands in the coming days.
After more than a decade of turmoil, Libya remains divided between two rival administrations: one in the west and the other in the east, each backed by different militias and foreign governments.

Half of Hong Kong is underwater! The worst flood in history in China after Typhoon Haikui
Half of Hong Kong is underwater! The worst flood in history in China after Typhoon Haikui
Natural disaster 8 September 2023.
Asian financial hub Hong Kong was drenched in the heaviest rain on Friday since records began 140 years ago. As a result, 83 people were injured, media reported.
The video shows water cascading down steep slopes in the former British colony, flooding shopping centres, metro stations and tunnels.
The extreme weather also brought chaos to the nearby Chinese city of Shenzhen, a technology hub of more than 17.7 million people. At the same time, business and transport links through the economically important Pearl River Delta were seriously affected.
The heavy rain was caused by Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall in China's Fujian province on Tuesday. Although it weakened to a tropical depression, its slow-moving clouds dumped huge amounts of rain across the area.

French schools send home girls wearing banned abaya robe - USNEWS2
A number of schoolgirls in France have been sent home, after arriving wearing the abaya – a long Muslim robe which was banned from schools in the country last week.
According to official figures, 298 girls - mainly aged 15 or more - turned up at school in the banned garment, and while most agreed to change and were allowed to attend classes, 67 girls refused to comply and were sent home.
It comes after the education minister announced that pupils would be banned from wearing the loose-fitting full-length robes worn by some Muslim women in France's state-run schools, as part of the nation’s strict ban on religious signs in state schools and government buildings, arguing that they violate secular laws.

Does Pakistan Need IMF? | MoneyCurve | USNEWS2
Friend or foe? A necessary evil or guiding light? The FPCCI’s recent report “Impact of IMF Programmes: A Context of Pakistan” highlights Pakistan’s IMF addiction.
Comparing key economic indicators in the years that Pakistan is under an IMF programme with the years that Pakistan is IMF-free, it states that most macroeconomic indicators tend to deteriorate when the country turns to the lender of the last resort.
Unsurprisingly, Pakistan’s current account deficit is lower because of the curbs to restrict imports. This leads to a decrease in industrial growth and hence GDP while unemployment rises since many industries depend on imports for inputs.
However, Pakistan turns to IMF when it is on the verge of default and hence is in already bad shape. If a family can’t pay for food, the bank will not lend money for cars. If prudent measures were to continue without IMF, it is possible that the country would emerge from its boom-burst cycle.
