Poverty in Britain - Why are millions of Brits so broke? | DW Documentary
Poverty in Britain - Why are millions of Brits so broke? | DW Documentary
Britain has a historically low unemployment rate of 3.6%. Yet poverty levels are breaking all records. It’s a paradoxical situation: almost 15 million Britons are considered poor these days, although there’s almost full employment. The reason: inflation and high energy costs.
Galloping inflation and a dramatic spike in energy costs in recent months are forcing millions of Britons into poverty. Wages fluctuate in an "uberized” working world of precarious employment conditions. Over the past 10 years, beginning with David Cameron, the government has scaled back its support to vulnerable members of society. The result: reduced life expectancy. Disadvantaged Britons are dying 10 years sooner than their wealthier compatriots - victims of what’s become known as the "shit life syndrome” - a life marked by poor living conditions, disease and addiction.
The documentary profiles people who have a job but can still afford nothing - from Blackpool in the west, to Ashton-under-Lyne and Cumbria, on the border with Scotland.

Exploring Turkey’s ancient underground city - BBC News
Close to the border with Syria, Midyat in Turkey has been home to many civilizations over the last 3,000 years.
Excavation teams recently discovered a vast underground network of caves and passages forming an underground city, thought to be almost 2,000 years old.
Valuables dating back to Roman times were found in the dig, including candlesticks, coins and bracelets.
It’s believed the city was used as a space to work, store, sleep and worship in times of war, and would've been inhabited by 70,000 people.

Huge fossilised 'sea dragon' found in UK - BBC News
The fossilised remains of a 10m-long sea predator called an ichthyosaur were found at Rutland Water Nature Reserve, England, during landscaping work.
It is the largest of its type ever discovered in the UK.
Ichthyosaurs lived between 250 million and 90 million years ago and could grow up to 25 metres long.
When water levels at the Rutland reservoir were lowered in the late summer of 2021, a team of palaeontologists came in to excavate the remains.

Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft crashes on Moon - BBC News
Russia's unmanned Luna-25 spacecraft has crashed into the Moon after spinning out of control. It was Russia's first Moon mission in almost 50 years.
The craft was designed to be the first ever to land on the Moon's south pole, but failed after encountering problems as it moved into its pre-landing orbit. It was set to explore a part of the Moon which scientists think could hold frozen water and precious elements.
Roscosmos, Russia's state space corporation, announced that it had lost contact with the Luna-25 and believed the craft had "ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the Moon”.
The loss of Luna-25 is a blow to Roscosmos. Russia's civilian space programme has been in decline for several years, as state funding is increasingly directed towards the military.
