So let me ask you this. When were your beliefs formed? Did they form in childhood? Because that's when most of our beliefs are formed and they're also formed a lot of times when we're first doing something, so maybe you tried something for the first time, and you weren't good at it because you didn't practice. You know, we really need to stop beating ourselves up over not feeling motivated because, you know what, if you don't feel motivated all the time, guess what? You're human. Our bodies are designed to follow the law of least effort to conserve energy, and this is what's allowed us to survive as a species for so long. You may have heard of Newton's first law of motion and it goes something like "a body at rest will tend to stay at rest unless it is acted upon by an outside force and a body in motion will tend to stay in motion unless it's acted upon with some resistance" or something like that. And you really need to ask yourself, if you're at rest, what is going to make you start moving? What's going to give you that energy? What is going to motivate you? And it has to be yourself, right? It states in Newton's law of motion that it needs to be acted upon. So either you need to act upon it or somebody else is going to act upon it for you. So say for instance, when it comes to training, you need to motivate yourself. You need to get out of your chair and start training, and that's going to get you moving because you don't want an outside force acting upon you. That gets you motivated because that could be somebody coming into your home, breaking into your home, doing something to you and your family. You don't want to wait for that to get motivated to train. You need to act upon yourself. Listen, I know it's going to be hard. You literally need to fight against what your body is designed to do to be able to get to where you want to be, but I'll tell you this, once you start going, it's going to start snowballing and it gets so much easier. Starting is always the hardest part. It's like trying to get a steam engine moving, you know, a big long train and it takes a lot of power, a lot of energy, in your case, a lot of self-motivation to get moving, but you know what? In this video, I'll give you five principles to ponder before purchasing a pistol. Hey, I'm retired Navy SEAL Chris Sajnog the author of Navy SEAL Shooting and one of the top 20 most frequently asked questions I get is, I don't own a gun. Where should I start? Well, new guy, start your timer as I give you my five-step plan for new gun owners in today's five in under five FAQ. Alright, so this video is just for you if you're a new gun owner, you don't own a gun yet, and you're like, where do I start? Step number one is to simply decide if a firearm is right for you. And this may sound kind of strange coming from a firearms instructor, but firearms aren't for everybody and don't think just because you want to protect yourself or those you love or whatever your reason is that a firearm is right for you because firearms are definitely not right for everybody. So make that decision and decide is it right for you or is it not? Alright, so the next step after you decide if a firearm is right for you, well you need to decide what type of firearm is right for you. And there's obviously all kinds of choices. You can make either a handgun, a rifle or shotgun, there are all kinds and you need to look at your situation and what you're planning on using it for to decide what type of firearm is going to be right for you. Step number three if you don't have a friend with a huge gun collection that you can go try everything out is to find a gun store that you can go at least look at and hold different firearms to find one that fits your needs and your budget, but that's really the best thing you can do is go get your hands on the equipment. Try it out. There are a lot of gun stores that also have ranges in them that you can actually shoot some of these firearms to make sure it's the right gun for you. Number four is once you decide on what you think is the right gun for you, the best thing you can do is either go get a blue gun or maybe an airsoft replica of the exact firearm that you plan on getting and practice with that a little bit. See if it's still right for you because I'll tell you what, it's going to be a lot cheaper and a lot safer if you try it out with a blue gun or an airsoft gun, you'll be able to learn and see if it's right for you before you go and make the purchase of the firearm you were thinking about getting. The fifth and final step is to make sure that you actually learn how to shoot before ever firing the gun. Now, if you've watched any of my other videos, this will make sense to you. If you haven't watched them, it probably doesn't make sense. So let me briefly explain. You need to learn how to shoot at home before you go to the range and start making the gun go bang. So what does that mean? Well, you need to learn how to stand. You need to learn how to grip the gun. You need to learn how to manipulate the trigger. You need to know how to focus and aim. You can do all of that stuff at home and you can do it before you ever fired your first round and you'll be a much better shooter and you'll learn a lot quicker for it. 00:21 Alright, so when I teach shooting, I talk about the importance of meditation and I understand that it can be hard and frustrating trying to learn how to meditate and understand the importance of meditation and why you do it. Well. The importance of meditation is being able to focus on what you choose to focus on at any moment in time. For instance, if you're in a gunfight or you're in a shooting competition, there's a lot of stress going on. There's a lot of noises and sounds and different things happening. Well, that's what's going on in your mind all the time and that's why it can be frustrating when you first start learning how to meditate. So what we want to do is control that stress at all times and slowly ramp up the amount of stress that you feel, even when you're meditating, when you start off meditating, what you want to do, or you may need to do to kind of quiet those sounds in your mind, is actually listen to some soft music. 01:19 I listen to some Japanese flute music sometimes binaural sou nds where there's different sounds going in each ear. You can listen to white noise, really anything to just kind of distract your mind and those thoughts that you're hearing and the whole purpose of meditation is taking those thoughts, acknowledging them, and then choosing to focus on your breath. So you want to do that in a quiet space with your eyes closed. Once you get good at that and you're starting to get better, you can take away the music because that's going to not wash out those sounds with something that's outside of yourself. So you're going to be able to control that better. Then you can start to meditate maybe with your eyes open. So now you have to take in this visual input and still be able to focus on what you choose to focus on. 02:07 You can start to go to a busy street, even as you get better, you want to start introducing these external stressors and that's going to be kind of the same thing you're going to experience in a gun fight or in a competition or wherever you need to use your firearm so you're slowly ramping up the stress that you're experiencing, but still using your mind and choosing to focus on what you want to focus on. And in the end you can even go to a gun range if you have a problem, flinching or reacting just to the sound of gunfire. Go and once you're at that level, meditate at a gun range. So it's not all about always just sitting in a quiet place and in the end you should be able to learn to meditate and do moving meditations. I use this with my shooting app where I use the focus band to teach you how to and fire your gun, 03:01 for instance, while staying in a flow state. Start off slow maybe with some white noise in your headphones that's going to help you drowned out those random thoughts that we all have in our minds, but then as you get better, slowly ramp up the amount of stress that you hear, things you see still while maintaining that meditative state.
