Not For My Glory, But For His

What is your mindset when you are chasing your fitness goals?
One way I think we can shift our focus to glorifying God, is through thankfulness. It is easy for me to puff myself up and be like “Oh, I accomplished this or that in my fitness."
But at the end of the day, it is all God.
Start with gratitude. So, as you head to the gym or out for a run, go to play pickleball, take time to thank God. “God, thank you so much that I can walk, run, lift weight, play in this rec league, etc.” We are all made in the image of God, and when we humble ourselves and take the time to thank God for the abilities, bodies, and passions in fitness, it helps us get a correct view of God and what he has blessed us with.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Guess what? If you work out, are training for something special or are just getting started in fitness, it all falls in the “everything” category. Giving thanks is a simple way to posture ourselves before the Lord and thank Him for the gifts and abilities he’s given us.

Do I Need to Be a Gym Rat to Be Faithful?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
It’s important to define upfront what we are talking about when we use the word fitness, because you might be thinking it’s focused primarily on working out.
But when we talk about fitness at Men of Iron, we aren’t just talking about what splits you’re doing in the gym. As we’ve already established in 1 Corinthians 6, everything in our physical experience is equally related to spiritual significance. When it comes to taking care of the temple of the Holy Spirit that He has entrusted us, it means fitness is a holistic endeavor.
Taking care of your physical body requires a long list of important elements that relate to your physical well-being. This includes your sleep habits, managing stress and emotions, the quality and quantity of your diet. And yes, that list also includes being active to the ability God has given you.
This does not mean you have to be a gym rat or body builder to fulfill God’s purpose in your life.
But your body is the vehicle in which you use to serve the purpose God has for you.
You have people around you who need your gifts and presence to serve them and point them back to Him.
If your car breaks down, you need to get it tuned up. You need to change the oil, put gas in, make sure the engine is running. A car that has broken down on the side of the road isn’t going anywhere. The same is true for us – it’s much harder to serve others, be helpful, or make an impact if we’re constantly broken down, tired, and sick.
Please know this does not ignore serious health concerns that might be beyond your control, but as much as you can, you are responsible for your temple's health.
This also is not an exercise of shame or judgment, because as Paul notes in verse 20,
You are not your own, you were bought for a price.
This is an invitation to something greater – God believes you are worth it. God gave everything He had to buy you back from brokenness. He is willing to do anything to have you as His son. You are worth more to Him than you can even imagine. He believes in you, and you should too.
So no, you don’t have to be a gym rat to be faithful to Jesus – you just need to know you’re worth the work to be healthier tomorrow than you are today. Not because of shame, but because you matter to God, and you matter to the people around you.

Does Fitness Matter to My Faith?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Does fitness really matter and how does it fit into my faith? We often get this question since it is part of the Core5 categories we use as the foundation of our tools and experiences.
At Men of Iron, we equip men to know God and know their purpose in Him – and that’s exactly my answer to the question.
Fitness matters because there is a direct correlation to your relationship with GOD and your ability to fulfill the PURPOSE He has for you.
Paul is very clear in 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 that our physical choices, lives, and bodies are intertwined with everything spiritual about us. You are equal parts physical and spiritual, and if you are seeking to follow Jesus, that means you are called to honor and reflect God with your physical choices – all of them.
In verse 17, Paul writes, “Whoever is united with the Lord is one with Him in the Spirit.” and goes onto say that our bodies are therefore temples of the Holy Spirit.”
When we make an unhealthy choice as it relates to what we eat or make a clearly sinful choice such as sleeping with a prostitute, we are bringing the Lord into those moments. And Paul isn’t talking metaphorically or figuratively.
No, he says the Spirit of the Living God LITERALLY lives inside of your body alongside your spirit.
Let’s use the same example Paul gives but replace the Spirit of God with your wife. Imagine taking your wife along with you to meet up with a prostitute. You’re not hiding or sneaking around; you’re bringing her along in all the sin and betrayal of that act.
The same is true for all our choices as we carry with us the literal presence and power of God’s Spirit in us. And so, whether it’s pornography, getting drunk, overeating, or other unhealthy habits, these are not private choices. You make them in God’s presence and either honor Him or you don’t.
And while eating too much sugar or skipping the gym aren’t sinful decisions like viewing pornography, the choices you make to holistically care for the body God gave you will lead to greater health and the ability to live the life He’s called you to.
Your pursuit of holistic fitness will give you more time, strength, and energy to know God and pursue the purpose and people He has put around you. That’s the adventure you were created for and that’s why your fitness matters as you take care of your temple of the Holy Spirit.

Glorifying God Through Fitness (EP. 225)
The Men of Iron BODcast is back with Justin and Roman! In the month of June we will be talking all about fitness and why it matters. How do we glorify God with our fitness? What does the Bible say about health and wellness? Fitness is more than just going to the gym, we need to think of fitness through a wholistic lens. Sleep, stress, mental health, nutrition, mobility, weights, cardio, etc. It’s a topic that the Church often ignores.
If you have struggled with your fitness for years it can feel overwhelming or intimidating to know where to start. We would love to help you on your fitness journey, reach out to us today and let us be a resource for you! https://menofiron.org/contact-us/

Physical or Spiritual, What Matters Most?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
What’s more important in this life, your physical or spiritual decisions?
In 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, Paul addresses the question as to whether our physical lives really matter compared to “the spiritual things.” Those who believed that line of thinking were using it as justification for using their physical bodies to do whatever they wanted, essentially, they were saying:
“I have the right to do whatever I want with my body, because whether it’s food, my appetite, or even sleeping with a prostitute, this physical life is going away someday anyway – so why does it really matter?
Paul answers very clearly in verse 13 – your physical body DOES matter – if you know Jesus, then you are called to use it for Him. There is a day when He will fully restore what is physically and spiritually broken, including your body.
So yes, what you do here and now with your physical existence matters.
He goes on to explain – your body is for Him, it is a member of Christ Himself and in verses 19-20, your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God. You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.
That’s the foundation of why your fitness matters to begin with – it’s the Gospel.
God has bought you back through His loving sacrifice and you belong to Him, and you are equally a physical AND spiritual being.
You cannot disconnect one from the other. Check to see if you carry any similar thoughts about your physical life – your time, health, food, and life choices. Do you separate your physical choices from the spiritual? Do you believe that you have the right and ownership to do what you want?
Because if you belong to Jesus, you don’t.

Redefining Manliness Through Friendship
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Maybe this episode should be called, from friendship to true friendship. Because there is no other place I have seen two men connect in such an impactful, life changing way. I think that scares us, I know it scares a lot of us. Just imagine I throw the word intimacy out there when referring to a relationship between two men and watch what happens.
Intimacy, that’s not manly at all! Really, well why don’t we stop allowing culture to define what manly is. Go check out at my week one blog. And while we’re at it, why don’t we check the definition of intimacy. It simply means, close familiarity or friendship. By default I think people hear the word intimacy and think about the other definition, which is, an intimate act, especially sexual intercourse.
Ok, now that you are awake, stop allowing culture and fear to define or better yet exclude you from something you need (not referring to the second definition, that’s a whole other podcast…Men of Iron after dark).
Let's get back to it. A close friendship, is that asking too much? Maybe the problem is that we need to make it simpler and define friendship.
We have completely watered down the definition of friendship to the point of clicking a button now makes you my friend. That's a problem. True friendship is the man who picks up the phone at 3am when you call…as long as his ringer is on. True friendship allows us to speak criticism, but in love, with a pure desire to see improvement.
True friendship involves confrontation (another word we are convinced is a bad thing). Do you see what I am getting at?
Don’t allow culture to define intimacy, friendship, or manliness.
You take ownership of what is true and beneficial. You change a culture, one man at a time. That’s what it takes, will you accept the challenge? So let’s take the next step and go deeper in our friendship with other Godly men. Let’s also look and see what relationships we may need to pull back from a little or possibly completely.
And that is not to judge others, it is to set boundaries and remain, or become spiritually healthy. Again, this is not about ending friendships with non-Christians. It is about making sure we have balance and a good representation of Godly men in our close circle.
Is there a friend you feel can be your mentor, or a friend you feel you can mentor, well ask him.
Ask him today, he may be waiting for an opportunity like this. Pray about it today and ask God what action he wants you to take in all your close friendships. God will move, but he won’t move you. You need to take the first step. Pray and act on what God says. If you do, I know you will soon be entering into a true, life changing experience. Don’t rob yourself, or let others rob you. Seek deeper friendship and possibly even a mentorship.

From Friend to Mentor
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
There are so many positives when it comes to a friendship moving to a mentorship. You know each other more than you would starting a mentorship with a complete stranger or even an acquaintance.
Since trust is such a big part of mentorship, you can see how this can be an advantage.
But there could be some disadvantages to a close friend becoming your mentor or protege as well. Knowing someone really well could have a negative effect on mentorship. It doesn’t always, but it is something I want to bring attention to.
Let me explain. When we have a close friendship with our mentor/protege, we may think we know everything about him and maybe not ask the proper questions or dig deep enough. We often assume or feel guilty when we don’t know certain personal things about them that we feel we should, and then become too embarrassed to ask. I think a great way to combat this is by saying, Hey, we’ve been good friends for a while, but I hear mentorship is going to take this to the next level, so let’s not be afraid to say or ask what's really on our mind.
This will help you become much better friends.
Another possible disadvantage is when we are in a mentorship with someone who is a little too much like us. Like, if you find your telling each other what big procrastinators you both are it may be a good idea to seek someone else that can offer more consistent or firmer accountability. Or you may find yourselves letting each other off the hook easily and rationalizing or bargaining your way to failure.
I believe as long as we identify the possible negatives or obstacles as well as the positives of taking a friendship to a mentorship we will be equipped to have a successful experience, or even decide to choose another man for that role. Regardless, that relationship you do have is probably special, so don’t discount all the other ways it can help in your journey.
It is ok if mentorship is not part of it, but sharpening each other always should be.
So think about that, if you are ready for a mentorship, is there someone you are close to that can provide it, or do you need to expand your search. Feel free to ask us for help. Check out our website, we even have a video on how to choose a mentor and I would be glad to talk to you personally as well. You can reach me at tonyg@menofiron.org. How Mentorship Changed My Life (EP. 224)
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Ryan and Tony are back for Week 4 of The Friend Series as we wrap up the month talking about mentorship. One-to-one mentorship is at the heart of what we do at Men of Iron. We believe every man should be involved in a mentorship. Tony shares his journey of how having a mentor has greatly impacted his life. Men, we all have purpose and finding that purpose is easier when you have another man walking alongside you. Mentors hold you accountable, challenge you, and encourage you to be the best man you can be. We all need accountability in our lives, we can’t do it on our own. Getting involved in a mentorship will have a generational impact. If you don’t know how to find a mentor, think of a friend in your life who is a season or two ahead of you. Ask that friend to mentor you and see what happens. If you need some help finding a mentor or protege, we would love to help. Apply today at www.menofiron.org/strong27. Your life will benefit from having a mentor.

The Impact of Mentorship
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
I wanted to take a minute to expand on how incredibly amazing my mentorship has been. I won’t go over all the details, you can go back and listen to the podcast for that. On EP. 224 of the Men of Iron Podcast, when Ryan asked me how my mentorship helped me specifically, I explained some good lessons I learned, but totally left out the best parts. Well good news, you get it here instead.
My friendship with Bryan Zeamer is my closest friendship, but he started as my mentor 17 years ago when I signed up for Strong 27 in it’s first year ever. That year was so impactful for me, it literally changed the trajectory of my entire life, and Bryan and I still meet every other week to sharpen each other. I am blessed beyond explanation.
Having a man that is a season ahead of you in life is invaluable or immeasurable, or both.
In a mentorship, having a man like Bryan who at the time was more like lifetimes ahead of me rather than seasons, well, that’s just unfair. But seriously I am so blessed, and I hate the overuse of that statement, but that’s just how I feel. God has blessed me with Bryan and many other great godly men. I do not deserve it. But He knew I needed it.
So, here is a not so quick list when I think about the impact my mentorship with Bryan has had on my life
• I lost 60 lbs.
• I went from thinking 8am was early to wake up, to now waking up before 5am every day
• I have become resilient
• I am learning my identity in Christ
• I mentor and coach others now
• I had a successful business for 20 years
• I graduated college as an adult in 2017
• I read at least one book a month
• I walk and spend time in solitude consistently
• Oh, and because God orchestrated this friendship 17 years ago, I am here now, talking to you as a member of the Men of Iron Team.
There’s more, but hey, if somehow you still have any reservation of why you need Godly friends and a mentor, let’s grab some coffee. Email me at tonyg@menofiron.org.

Find the Right Friends
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
The right friends can help us in our mission and our legacy.
Elisha spent six to ten years following and serving together with Elijah. Elisha paid close attention to everything Elijah was doing. We only know a little about what happened in those couple of years, but we do know that Elisha never returned to his old way of life.
He remained loyal to Elijah, and together, they fearlessly served God.
Eventually, it became apparent that their time together was closing. They both became aware of it around the same time. Elijah knew God was calling him home, and he wanted to depart quietly and on his own. But Elisha refused to leave his side.
Elijah asked Elisha to leave him three times, and each time, Elisha refused. He was committed to traveling with Elijah until the very end. Finally, right before Elijah travels to heaven in a fiery chariot, he asks Elisha what he wants.
Here's what happens in 2 Kings 2: 9,
When they came to the other side, Elijah told Elisha, "Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away." And Elisha replied, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor."
Elisha caught the vision. He was committed to his friend, he was dedicated to the mission, and he desired to continue serving God well. When he asks to inherit a double shrew of his spirit, it's not so he can outshine Elijah or compete with Elijah. He is showing a genuine desire to push the mission further and capitalize on what God has already accomplished through Elijah.
Elisha honored Elijah by capitalizing on his mentor's work.
If you read further into Elisha's story, you will find that he accomplishes twice as many miracles as his mentor. He got his wish. God accomplished incredible things through the friendship of Elijah and Elisha. They shared a joint mission, and when one of them left, the other one finished the task.
The right friends can sharpen us, encourage us, and continue the legacy that we have already been committed to.
Find the right friends.

How is Elijah different from Elisha?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Elijah was Elisha's mentor.
I wonder if Elijah had any hesitations or second thoughts when he went to find Elisha. Maybe he was afraid that Elisha wouldn't be interested. Maybe he was concerned that Elisha was too busy growing his farming business. Maybe he thought he was too old to invest in a younger person. Those doubts and uncertainties faded quickly when he eventually found Elisha and called him to the mission.
Here's what happened in 1 Kings 19,
So, Elijah went and found Elisha, son of Shaphat, plowing a field. There were twelve teams of oxen in the field, and Elisha was plowing with the twelfth team. Elijah went over to him, threw his cloak across his shoulders, and then walked away. Elisha left the oxen standing there, ran after Elijah, and said to him, "First let me go and kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will go with you!" Elijah replied, "Go on back, but think about what I have done to you." So, Elisha returned to his oxen and slaughtered them. He used the wood from the plow to build a fire to roast their flesh. He passed around the meat to the townspeople, and they all ate. Then he went with Elijah as his assistant. 1 Kings 19: 19-21
Elisha was so honored by the opportunity to follow along and learn from Elijah that he destroyed his old way of life. He was so honored by the opportunity to learn from Elijah that he could not think of anything better he could ever do. This was just the beginning.
God would use both men in powerful ways that continue to shape our faith today.
Elijah was willing to invest in Elisha. Elisha grew in his faith significantly by following Elijah. All of us have benefitted from their willingness and their obedience.
Is God asking you to do something similar?

What Does the Bible Say About Friendship? (EP. 223)
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Ryan and Tony are back for Week 3 of The Friend Series as we take a look at friendship in the Bible. From Lazarus and Jesus to David and Jonathan, the Bible provides several examples of really solid friendships. Friendship takes intentionality and effort and Jesus models true friendship for us in His life of ministry. His friends were the faithful men who carried on the mission of Jesus after his death. The story of David and Jonathan, another great example of friendship in the Bible. David meets Jonathan and they become friends, even though David and Saul are essentially political rivals. That’s what makes this friendship so shocking. Jonathan was more concerned with God’s plans than his own plans. David and Jonathan were great friends because they served a great God together. That was the most important part of their friendship. How can we apply this type of friendship and obedience to our own lives? You need a friendship like David and Jonathan in your life. When you serve God, everything else in your life will be better. Think about someone in your life who could benefit from being your friend. Text that guy today and start investing in them.

The Role of Friends in Fulfilling God's Plan
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
You might know that God spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice, but what did he say?
Elijah was a faithful prophet in a wicked time. 1 Kings 18 tells the story of Elijah squaring off against hundreds of prophets of Baal, a false God at the time. Elijah mocks the wicked prophets. Eventually, God answers Elijah's prayers, and then, in an incredibly violent fashion, Elijah kills 450 false prophets in the valley below the mountain. Then Elijah flees to the wilderness and falls into a deep depression.
He tells God, "Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died."
What follows is a dramatic scene in which God promises to speak to Elijah, but not in the way he assumes. First, Elijah encounters a powerful wind, expecting to see God in the wind, but he's not there. Then he encounters an earthquake, but God is not there, and then there's a fire, but God is not in the fire.
God finally speaks in a still, small voice.
Here's what God told him,
"Go back the same way you came, and travel to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive there, anoint Hazael to be king of Aram. Then anoint Jehu, grandson of Nimshi, to be king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from the town of Abel-meholah to replace you as my prophet." 1 Kings 19: 14-16
God reminded Elijah of the mission and sent him to find a friend. Elijah only accomplished one of the three tasks he was given. Elijah chose his successor, who eventually became his friend.
A huge part of God's plan for Elijah was surrounding him with the right people, specifically the right friends.
Elijah chose Elisha to follow him, and Elisha eventually completed the tasks that Elijah could not. Like Elijah, you are meant to serve God with your life.

Men, Don't Do Life Alone!
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Society has been telling men we don’t need anyone, do it yourself for centuries. Well listen, it’s time to change that, to evolve and realize just how critical it is to have a godly man in your life that can pick you up when you fall, encourage you when you walk, call you out or help you identify pitfalls on the road ahead and how to avoid or combat them.
Why choose to fight alone? This life is hard! Why make it even harder by fighting alone? We have options.
And maybe you already have a godly man in your life, but want to go even deeper, want to be more consistent with meeting. Maybe you don’t know how to go about finding another man you would trust.
Well, being a part of Men of Iron for 17 years I have seen the benefits, or in my opinion, necessity, of having a mentor in you life. A mentor is as simple as a man that is just a season ahead of you in his spiritual walk, that's it. He’s not perfect, he hasn’t “arrived.” Simply a season ahead.
Mentorship! This is where it’s at, this is what every man needs to be involved in at some point in their life. It’s a commitment, and not everyone is ready for it, but that’s okay. As long as we are making progress towards it. Sometimes we just need to be involved in a small group first. But we do need to make some type of move.
Here are some options to get started on the quest for a true friend. You can get plugged into a church - you may just need to get plugged into YOUR church. Most churches have men’s groups, join one. Don’t go to church? No problem, contact us, contact me and I can help you find some options. We even have small groups that meet locally in your area.
Not sure you are ready to put yourself out there like that, but you are feeling a nudge today? Okay, let’s grab coffee or jump on a phone call.
The resources are here, it's just whether or not you want to take a step towards them.
What is God saying to you? Is it time to act? What is holding you back? Pray and ask God those questions, and when you are ready reach out to us, we would love to journey with you! You can reach me at tonyg@menofiron.org or you can check out some of our free resources to get started.

Making Time For Friends
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Time is a factor. I get it. Sometimes we are so busy with work, kids sports, date nights, fixing the car or trying to finish that project we started two months ago, that it really is a struggle to make time for “friends.”
Well, like anything else in life, if you believe something is important, you will find a way to make time.
It doesn’t have to be daily or weekly, but if we inventoried our time, is there at least one or two hours in the month you can repurpose to build or continue to build a meaningful relationship with another godly man? Note I didn’t say add or give, but repurpose.
Or could you skip that episode of Netflix, the game, what about an hour of sleep?
Get creative. Do you see the value, the importance of having a good conversation with another godly man? You may need to vent, you may have some questions, you may need to confess a sin you are struggling with, or maybe they need you. I feel it is so critical that we have a place for this, but it takes intentionality. Bottom line, we have to go after it.
I don’t want to know where I’d be without the friendships, the godly men, God has blessed me with.
I don’t deserve the friends I have, but I knew I needed them and I did something about it, and with God’s help and my intentionality, I still have those friendships that sharpened me. And you know what else, I am now able to sharpen them as well.
I have a challenge for you. Take inventory of your time this week. Write down everything you do every day. From waking up to going to sleep and every activity in between. List all your priorities, and sure, going to the gym and taking time to relax and recharge is a priority, but, after you list everything, look and see what you could have done without.
Where could you repurpose one hour for a breakfast, lunch, a phone call, or even a zoom call, with a man who is a season ahead of you or where you can pour into a man that you are a season ahead of. Remember, Iron sharpens Iron, but it only happens if we are intentional.
Action Step: Pray and ask God what you can let go of in order to pursue a specific friendship or mentorship.

Can You Have Non-Christian Friends? (EP. 222)
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Ryan and Tony are back for Week 2 of The Friend Series as we talk about balancing Christian and non-Christian friendships. This episode is NOT about getting rid of your friends who are don't know or love Jesus. It's about evaluating your friendships and ultimately using these relationships to help you and others grow closer to God. Jesus was known for hanging out with sinners, but his inner circle was made up of men who were striving to be godly. The closest voices in your life should be men who point you closer to Jesus. Take inventory of your friends. Who are your closest friends? Are they bringing you closer to Jesus? Who are some men in your life who you can point closer to Jesus? Men, relationships don't grow by accident. Friendships get harder as we get older with family, kids, work, etc. It takes intentionality to sustain close friendships. Think about some friendships in your life that need attention and act on that today.

Why Men Don't Have Friends
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
We talked about a few common reasons men don’t have friends in our week one podcast, and remember, we're not talking acquaintances here. There’s plenty of guys I just play ball with, just watch sports with, just remember to text a happy birthday to, but what we’re talking about is true friendship. A guy that would show up at 3am if you needed him, a guy you don’t have to beg to help you move, he just shows up with a smile. But let’s take it deeper, how about a guy that calls you out for behavior that he knows is not part of who you really are or want to be, or a friend that actually asks you how your connection with God is lately or how your marriage is, your kids? OK, now we are getting somewhere.
Why don’t we have those types of friends?
Well, for one, that type of relationship takes time. We need to build trust. It takes intentionality. You're probably thinking – relationship, time, trust, intentionality? Um, where don’t I sign up Imagine I throw in the word intimacy and 80% of the men listening just clicked off. But why? Well none of those are manly words. Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and take off the dress Nancy. But wait, where did we get this model of a man from?
As Christians, aren’t we supposed to be imitators of Christ? Then why do we imitate the worlds view of manhood?
Show me a man that woke up every morning day after day after sleeping in the desert or mountains half the time only to have to serve and help people all day. Then with the greatest example of self-control, while he is being berated and tortured, does not snap his finger and wipe out his enemies Thanos style. No, instead He chooses to take the most humiliating excruciating pain. Nah, that’s not manly, we could all do that, right?
Look, if you leave with one thing today, it’s this, Jesus, who was God, chose to have a minimum of 12 men around him constantly! Who am I, who are you to think you don’t need a few if He did?
The reason most men don’t have close Godly friends is not because they can’t define friendship, it’s because they can’t define a real man.
Change your friends, change your life. Change your example, change a culture.
Thanks for listening, now pray about what God wants you to do with all of this.

How Can I Use My Influence Well?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Steward your influence well and use it faithfully to bring honor and glory to God. You need a Barnabas, you need a Peter, and you need a Timothy.
You need a mentor, a peer, and a protege.
We're introduced to the Apostle Paul in Acts 7:58. At that point in his story, he encouraged people to kill an early follower of Jesus named Stephen. Early Christians were terrified of Paul because his favorite pastime was killing their friends. And he was good at it. Paul became a Christian following a radical encounter with Jesus, which permanently changed the trajectory of his life. But everyone was still afraid of him. Until a man named Barnabas took a risk on Paul, Barnabas ended up teaching, training, and traveling with Paul. Everything Barnabas did, Paul did.
Paul would not have had the influence that he had if Barnabas had never taken a chance on him and invested in him. Eventually, Paul led, taught, and served alongside Peter. They were peers, and they constantly encouraged and sharpened each other. At times, they had to work together through tension and pressure.
In Galatians 2, Paul describes when he had to confront Peter because he was missing the mark. We can be thankful that they served together and encouraged each other as peers because we all have directly benefited from the teaching and passion of both Peter and Paul.
Finally, Paul also invested in Timothy. Timothy was a younger man, a few seasons behind Paul. He was intentionally investing in Timothy so that one day, he could take over Paul's churches and ministries. Paul was the mentor, and Timothy was the protege.
We need a Barnabas. A Man a few seasons ahead of us who is willing to invest in us and push us further.
We need a Peter. A friend and a peer who can walk with us and call us out when we miss the mark. We need Timothy, a younger man we are intentionally investing in and calling up. They can learn from our mistakes and eventually become even more influential than we are.
Live well and honor God with your influence.

Navigating Friends With Different Values Than Mine
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Do you have flimsy faith? If you do, be careful about who influences you. Most of us can think of times when our friends led us in the wrong direction. It's easy to revisit those stories and blame your friends for their negative influences, but it was your fault. You allowed yourself to make a bad decision when someone else made a poor choice.
It's not your friends who determine your future. It's your character.
So, if you want to grow and mature, you must evaluate your own character honestly. Don't blame someone else.
The Apostle Paul was talking about character and influence when he wrote, "Bad company corrupts good character." Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don't know God at all." 1 Corinthians 15: 33-34
Paul wrote this to new Christians in Corinth. They had flimsy faith. If you're in the same situation, you need to surround yourself with men who are mature in their faith. Men who understand who God is and what he has called them to do.
Find friends who make every decision they can to honor God and further his kingdom.
You don't have to eliminate all your other friends. But you do need to mature out of your own flimsy faith. Take an honest inventory of your life and determine who you really are. Lying to yourself has no benefits at all. Don't pretend to be a Christian when you're not. If you have flimsy faith, find mature friends. If you are mature in your faith, invest in someone else.
Many people need more authentic Christians involved in their lives, not less. If you have been following Jesus for a long and are confident in your faith, striking up a meaningful friendship with non-believers could change their lives.

How Deep Friendships Can Transform Men's Lives (EP. 221)
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Ryan and Tony join the pod for the month of May as we kick off The Friends Series! Why don't men have friends? We all have friends (or acquaintances) that we can watch a football game with or grab a beer with. But what about those deep, dependable friendships? As men we are often resistant to these type of friendships. It's easier to keep our destructive habits to ourselves, to not be challenged or held accountable. Men you weren't meant to do life alone. You need dependable friends to care for you, hold you accountable and to grow in your faith with. Find a friend who is going to move you closer to God. If you don't have a friend or friend like this in your life, we would love to help you in your journey. Contact us today! https://menofiron.org/contact-us/ "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17. This verse is our anchor verse at Men of Iron and it is ultimately about having good, godly friends. Our challenge for you today is to reconnect with a friend that you haven't talked to in awhile.

What is the Difference Between a Friend and an Acquaintance?
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
You can't live your life alone. Relationships with others are an essential part of life.
Most men don't have friends. They have a lot of acquaintances.
That's a problem. Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." If your friends aren't sharpening you, they're not your friends. Don't get me wrong, you can keep hanging out with them, and that's not a problem. It's fun to get together with other guys, watch a football game, put on a deer drive, and hit the golf course. However, most of those guys are your acquaintances. They're not your friends.
If you assume your acquaintances are your friends, you will be disappointed. Friendship should sharpen you. Friendship should be a meaningful part of your life that cannot be easily disposed of. Try to surround yourself with faithful and dependable men. The kind of men you can ask for help, and they will show up. Try to surround yourself with accountable men. You can hold them to a high standard, and they can hold you to a high standard.
Friends should always move you closer to Jesus.
That's what sharpening looks like. You need men in your life that will sharpen you. You cannot honestly know God and know your purpose entirely on your own. You need solid friends who follow Jesus and consistently push you to do the same.

Financial Wisdom: Planning with Purpose and Intentionality
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Have you ever heard the saying, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail?” While this is true in life overall, it is especially true in our finances.
Godly men take their role and responsibility seriously and your finances impact both.
Both your purpose and the people God has given you to lead and serve require you to care for your finances with intentionality. You need to have a plan to care for both the people and purpose in your life.
If you go into your finances alone without God’s wisdom, without godly counsel, and without a plan, you are gambling with the opportunities and impact God has for you and that is not a gamble you want to make because it rarely works out.
The reality is, one day we will all spend our last day on earth. While this is a sobering statement, it is not something we think about when we are young. But, if we don’t start when we are young, we risk our financial peace being replaced with financial stress.
You might have heard the phrase “money is the root of all evil” – but did you know it is actually a misquote? What Jesus says is, the LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Jesus also talks about how we cannot serve God and money. Ironically, when we don’t develop a godly plan, we allow money to be a source of stress which can become its own destructive evil or idol in our lives.
Men, take this responsibility seriously. Have a plan for your finances that is centered on godly wisdom and godly counsel, so you don’t let it get in the way of the meaningful purpose God has for you.
So let me leave you with some financial advice from Paul in 1 Timothy 6:17-19: Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
God wants to use your finances, no matter how much or how little you think you have, for important things.
To provide for your family, to invest in Kingdom efforts, and to be generous to those who need them. Make a plan that reflects a trust in God so He can make the most of what you have and invest in treasure that will last forever.
We’ll see you next time.

Godly Guidance in Financial Decisions
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Our lives are packed with infinite amounts of choices. Walk down any cereal aisle at your local grocery store, and this becomes obvious quickly. In fact, name any sort of product or food and you can quickly become overwhelmed with the sheer volume of flavors and options. So how do you know what the right choice is? When it comes to our finances, there are different philosophies, tools, and advisers to choose from and the consequences can feel much more important than just what cereal to eat for breakfast.
First go to God and ask for His wisdom. Then ask Him to lead you to the right counsel from others around you.
Proverbs 15:22 says, Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Advisors can direct us in such things as creating a budget, developing a plan to save, getting out of debt, and many other important things related to our finances. It is imperative to plan in this area, as finances are critical in providing for the role and responsibilities God has given you. You must take it seriously.
Don’t let your pride get in the way of getting help.
Don't let the number of options overwhelm you. There is no shame in asking for help, in fact, the only shame would be trying to do it alone. Seek wisdom from God and take the next step in pursuing godly advisers who can help you create a plan that honors Him and what He’s called you to do.
If you need a mentor or coach, contact us here at Men of Iron and we can work on making that happen. Start seeking advice from a godly mentor or coach and make a plan to crush your financial goals!
I’ll see you next time!

Invite God Into Your Finances
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate
Today, we are surrounded by many good programs and advisors to help us with our finances. This includes faith-based organizations that hold to solid Biblical principles. But too often we forget to go directly to the source and invite God into our financial world. With countless financial tools at our fingertips, we can’t forget the best one – the creator of the universe who invites us to seek His wisdom.
James 1:5 says, If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you without rebuke.
God is an infinite source of wisdom and WANTS us to come to Him and ask for His input. It is not a burden to Him; it is not going to bug Him – He WANTS you to ask. And yes, seek wise counsel from Godly men, but if you haven’t started by asking God to lead you to those men, you’re missing a crucial step in the process.
When it comes to your finances, start with asking for wisdom from the Source.
Ask God to lead the way in your finances, He wants to hear from you today.
We’ll see you next time.
