If your car is making noises it is trying to talk to you. Do you know what your car noises mean? I have been driving for over 50 years. Here are 19 bad car noises and my car noise translations based on personal experience. If you are a new car driver this will help you diagnose possible car problems using car noises. If you are a more experienced and knowledgeable driver or a car mechanic or technician I welcome and appreciate any additional information you may leave in the comments to help inform the rest of us. Common Causes of Car Noises and Their Solutions Question: What would cause my car to make a clicking noise when I turned the key, but the engine does not start? Answer: Possible causes include a weak battery, starter motor, or ignition system. Screeching – this high pitched noise is due to the power steering belt in the car, which will need adjusting to resolve the issue. Tapping, clattering, or knocking – this sound originates from the engine and is most like caused by the valve lifters or the crankshaft or bearings. Light tapping you may need to adjust the valve clearances, heavy knocking, and maybe a crankshaft bearing issue. Groans or Moans – when steering or turning? If your car has a hydraulic power steering system then the likely cause is a power steering pump. Also-by low power steering fluid, a faulty power steering pump, or worn steering components. Screeching, squealing, wailing – Answer: Causes of this noise may include a worn serpentine belt, a faulty belt tensioner, or a problem with the alternator or power steering pump. Hissing – from under the hood, indicating the escape of air from the air or fuel systems, or could indicate head gasket issues. Also-a vacuum leak, a failing PCV valve, or a damaged intake manifold gasket. Look for coolant leaks. Hissing when the car is turned off due to cold fluid leaking onto hot engine parts. Rattling, pinging, or hammering – sound from the front when you accelerate or the car is under load is probably coming from misfiring pistons. : Potential causes include engine knocking, pre-ignition, worn engine bearings, or loose timing chain/belt. Grinding or crunching – if noise occurs when changing gears either manually or automatically, it’s a problem with gears wearing or the gearbox synchronized, which allows for the easy shifting of gears or the clutch. Usually comes paired with high mileage. : Possible causes include worn clutch (manual transmission), low transmission fluid (automatic transmission), or transmission problems. Scraping or metallic screeching – brake pads are often designed to have a metal tag that creates a high-pitched noise to indicate the pads need changing. Clunking – this slightly shocking sound when you brake is often accompanied by a lack of response from the pedal. The main cause? Usually, a sign that a caliper is either damaged or simply mounted incorrectly. Whistling, scraping, rattling – don’t confuse it with a wheel bearing failure. May be a stone that’s caught between the brake disc and the cover and the noise is the vibration resonating through the entire system. Knocking or clunking – when you go over potholes or bumps in the road? Suspension is usually the answer, and the cause is likely to be anything from bad ball joints, worn control arms or faulty stabilizer pins. A simple bounce test can help confirm issues. Common causes of this noise include worn suspension components, loose brake components, or drivetrain issues. Loud bang – back-firing from the car? The likely cause is down to a poor mix between fuel and air which leads to explosions in the exhaust system or could be the catalytic converter. Rasping or roaring sound – when accelerating is a problem with the car’s exhaust. Usually a simple fix. If this noise is accompanied by a scraping sound then it’s likely a bracket has busted too and you are hearing the exhaust scrape. : Possible causes include wheel bearing failure, tire issues, or problems with the exhaust system or drivetrain. Howling, Whirring – usually a symptom of a problem with the differential. This complex system has a number of fatigue-prone parts and pinion preload, bad bearings, or worn gears are the most likely originators of the sound. Car turning Clunking or Clacking – listen for a sound similar to a train on the tracks. The cause? wear on the constant velocity joints (CV joints) which can be found located at the end of the drive axles. I removed the rust from a rusty junked Raleigh folding bike I found in the trash over 5 years ago. I used a $3 bottle of Turtle Wax Chrome polish and some aluminum foil. When done I waxed the little bike with Maguire's liquid automotive wax. The bike has been stored indoors. The bike still looks crusty but very little rust has returned. Here is a quick cheap simple air-conditioning tip that can save homeowners a lot of money. Whenever you change your air conditioning filter make it a habit to always add some drain cleaner to your air conditioner drain. You can buy noncorrosive air-conditioning drain cleaner, but you can also make a simple do-it-yourself drain cleaner from vinegar or diluted bleach solution and then rinse off with water when you're done. If you're careful and use some tubing and a funnel you can be sure to get it all down the drain without getting any on the metal parts of your condenser. In the video. I also go over the importance of using a water alarm. They are very inexpensive and will immediately alert you if you have any leaks from your air conditioner. I recommend you give them to your upstairs neighbor. If your air conditioner drain is clogged up. I don't know what year model this particular Hyundai Sonata is but I think it's one of the most well-designed midsized average-priced four-door sedans I've seen in a long time. Don't get me wrong, there are more expensive four-door sedans that might look better, and the competitors for this car such as the Toyota Camry or Mazda Six are also very well-designed well-proportioned cars. I saw a Mazda Six in a bright candy apple red the other day that was amazing. And the Toyota Camry is looking very good. Having said all that this particular car in my opinion is close to being perfect as far as the proportions go. Very little if anything looks inconsistent with the overall design. It's a beautifully designed car. And it's a four-door. It's a sedan. I think Hyundai can be very proud of its design team. This is the first time I have filmed outdoors on my bicycle with the DJI Osmo pocket camera. I apologize for the audio. In future videos. I will experiment with making the audio less susceptible to wind gusts while riding the bicycle. Also, I had the camera attached to my bicycle helmet and did not realize how uncomfortable it would be to watch my head move back and forth while recording. I was concentrating on being safe on the bicycle. I think I can do better next time. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the video quality and except for some strong gusts that overpowered the microphone even the audio is not that bad. I purchased the camera used on eBay for $105. So far I'm liking a lot better than the Insta 360 which cost me over $300. The DJI Osmo pocket camera falls over if you try to stand it up. The DJI Osmo pocket camera comes with an excellent case. I decided to add some support legs to the case so I could insert the DJI Osmo pocket camera into the case and have it stand up without falling over easily. This is my first design. I did not want to make any cuts or holes in the case or make any permanent changes. I used tape and some card stock to make slots for some legs on the bottom of the case. Initially, I was going to store the legs inside the case. But I decided to make some extra slots for them. So the legs could be stored on the outside of the case. I think epoxy or hot glue would attach the legs in a more permanent fashion. In addition, it should be not difficult to add a grommet to a piece of wood on the bottom to allow it to rotate and extend out to support the case. I was also thinking it might be fun to put some little wheels on the end of the support legs to allow the case to be pulled with the camera or inside to make a little gadget to record videos while the case is being moved. I asked chat GPT to come up with a video description for me and this is what it came up with. Years ago I was a big fan of the Toyota Prius. I thought it would be great for camping. When I found out you could sleep in it at night and the engine would come on and turn on the air conditioning I fell in love with the Toyota Prius. When I learned it was the most reliable of cars year after year and one of the longest lasting and got great gas mileage, I liked it even more. However, most of my friends had a very negative view of the Toyota Prius. I felt this negative viewpoint was undeserved. Sure, some of the drivers of the car were unpleasant individuals, but the car was excellent. The reason I'm making this point is I feel the same way about tofu and soy products. We may be having some difficult economic times shortly. If we do I think it will be a shame so many people overlook the benefits they could be getting from learning how to eat and prepare soy products. Soy is just a bean. An excellent bean. Initially, I did not like tofu or soy products. But after learning how to cook soy it's not bad. Many people don't like the taste of soy and tofu, but I grew up eating fried bologna sandwiches on white bread with mustard. There's nothing wrong with tofu. The protein you get from tofu is not as high quality as eggs or meat or fish but it is still an excellent low-cost protein. One thing I forgot to mention in the video was that when I cook my tofu. I coated it with cornmeal. I will do a separate video in the future on how I cook and grill my tofu. I hope you give both the Toyota Prius and soybeans and tofu a second look. I also hope you start looking at other things in your life you could benefit from by looking at them differently instead of being swayed by other people. Make up your own mind. Gather your own facts. I know I'm going to get a lot of replies stating that they prefer so many other foods over tofu are so many other cars that are better than Toyota Prius etc. They will compare apples to oranges. I'm not saying tofu and soy are better than anything, I'm saying it's not some terrible awful dangerous food. It's very inexpensive and good for you. And as far as a Toyota Prius I know many cars look better and have better driving and handling characteristics etc. and so on. But, year after year the Toyota Prius is near the top of the list for the most reliable, dependable car. And I don't know too many other cars I would want to camp in South Florida in the summertime. If you ever have to end up sleeping in your car it will be hard to find a better one than the Toyota Prius. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Don't forget to check out my other playlist.
